New Possibilities

"You ok?" Mason asked as he was driving Jade back home that morning. After they left the old Lockwood cellar things had been tense, and he had one guess as to why. He was hoping that this would have been a chance to talk to her about how he felt, not that it was much of a secret, but her behavior told him otherwise. She was clearly uncomfortable having woken up with him like that.

"Um, yeah," Jade nodded, though she wasn't sure how to phrase what she was thinking.

"Nothing happened," Mason informed her and she looked at him in confusion.

"What?" Jade asked, wondering if he could read her mind now too or something.

"The more you turn, the more you're able to remember stuff from your turn," Mason explained. "I've been turning for..." He trailed off. "Three years now." He turned to look at her as they pulled up in front of the Donovan house. "Nothing happened."

"Ok," Jade nodded, seeming relieved.

"I know you don't think of me like that," Mason thought, mentally adding the word yet. "So, I wouldn't ever try..." He knew he was making the awkwardness worse as she glanced over at him. "I don't know, you were cold, it was stupid of me."

"It's...fine," Jade said awkwardly. Turning her head as she heard another car pull into the driveway, she jumped when Damon was right outside her door.

"Sorry," Damon held his hands up apologetically as she hopped out of Mason's jeep, immediately hugging him. "I wanted to meet you here, see how last night went."

"It was ok," Jade shrugged as she pulled away from him, with him taking her hand now. "I'm still kind of achy." She wasn't sure how to put it, but it still hurt. It made sense, considering every bone in her body broke last night. Mason said it hurt less the next day after a few turns, but she wondered if he was just lying to make her feel better.

"Let's get you inside," Damon said, kissing her forehead before looking into the jeep where Mason had rolled the window down to talk to them. "Thanks for taking care of my girl last night."

"Anytime," Mason nodded and Jade felt uncomfortable again. Maybe nothing had happened, but they had technically slept together, with Mason holding her close throughout the late part of the night. Part of her wanted to be honest with Damon, while another part of her knew she could consider Mason to be dead if she was honest with Damon.

"Hey," Damon got her attention again, sensing her uneasiness. "C'mon, let's go inside." He stared to lead the way up the front walk, then stop. "I should warn you, Vicki's been worried."

"Gotcha," Jade nodded and she knew that meant Vicki waiting on the couch as soon as they walked in the door, hopping up at the sight of her sister, ready to smother her.

"How are you feeling?!" Vicki asked quickly. She had been worried about Jade all night and so had Matt who unfortunately had to go in for an early shift at the grille.

"I'm ok," Jade promised.

"Are you sure?" Vicki prodded. "Nothing...weird or anything?"

"Our whole lives are weird now," Jade teased her, though it was a massive understatement. "But, really Vic, I'm fine." Vicki couldn't shake that something else was seeming to bother Jade, though Vicki knew the routine of her older sister protecting her from the truth. She smiled and went along with it.

"Good," Vicki smiled. "Do you wanna go get some breakfast or something?"

"I'm kinda tired," Jade told her. "I think I wanna just lay down for a little."

"Ok," Vicki nodded, hugging her sister quickly before releasing her to go upstairs with Damon.

"You sure you're all right?" Damon asked Jade curiously as they went into her bedroom, with him closing the door behind them.

"Things could be way worse," Jade shrugged.

As far as she was concerned, everyone was alive and healthy. Vicki was adjusting well to being a vampire and things were going great with Damon. She was even getting along with Klaus, though she wasn't aware of what he was up to with her boyfriend; things were getting better with Kelly too in the last few days.

"What did you do last night?" she changed the subject now.

She wanted anything but to talk about last night, deciding now that it would be a bad idea to tell Damon about her and Mason cuddling last night. After all, nothing really happened but it would infuriate Damon either way. And with things going well nowadays, why ruin it with more drama.

"Ah, not much," Damon was lying to her. "Hung out with Stefan for a little, thought about how you were doing."

"I appreciate it," Jade smiled, thinking that he was sweet. "But, really, I'm going to be fine."

"I just wish that you didn't have to go through this," Damon said as he got into her bed first, with her laying down soon after next to him.

"Well, me either," she said lightly, scooting over closer to him. "But, this is better than having Vicki and Matty's dad around." She paused, looking him over. "Are you ok?"

"Fine," Damon nodded, though she wasn't reassured. "Do you want to get dinner with your dad tonight?" It wasn't in the plan, he just thought of it now, but he didn't want to keep things from her and he was going to get Klaus to come clean. Completely confused now, Jade propped herself up on her elbow.

"Are you feeling ok?" Jade asked him.

"Fine, why?" Damon asked.

"Because the last time I tried having dinner with my dad you showed up to babysit," Jade reminded him. "Because you think it's such a bad idea."

"I think he's sketchy," Damon shrugged, then motioned to himself. "But, to be fair, people think I'm sketchy."

"You are being sketchy right now," Jade teased him and he made a face back. "Seriously, what's going on with you?"

"I just want to check him out," Damon assured her. "Get to know him, I mean you want your dad, and I want you to have what normalcy you can."

"O...kay," Jade said, relaxing into bed again.

"What?" Damon asked as she laid against his chest.

"I can just tell when something is up with you, that's all," she yawned. Damon sighed, knowing she was right. Listening to her breathing get heavy as she fell back asleep, Damon remembered the last time she figured out that something was up with him; it was right before he disappeared on her.

Flashback

"Where did you go this morning?" Jade asked when Damon came back to her college apartment, paper bag in his hand.

"Good morning to you too," Damon greeted her tone sarcastically, tossing the bag on the counter. "I was getting you breakfast."

"And two nights ago, when you were late?" Jade asked, recalling when he was supposed to meet her at the movies but showed up just as the end credits were rolling. The more the incidents were piling up, the more it got to her and she felt like she had to say something.

"I told you, my car broke down and my phone was dead," Damon said defensively. He would love to compel all these things from her mind, but he swore to himself that he would never do that; every moment with her was going to be real.

"How about last week when I was walking to my car from the library," Jade confronted him. "You told me you were leaving town for the weekend to visit friends in Virginia, but I saw you on campus." He had no idea about that, not having seen her in the parking lot. He had been following some girl on a late night jog so he could feed, with the local blood banks upping security due to recent thefts.

"It must have been some really lucky guy," Damon smirked. "Since he looks just like me." Jade rolled her eyes.

"Be serious Damon," Jade told him. "I know when you're lying to me. What the hell is going on with you?"

"Nothing," Damon said, though he didn't realize he had gotten this sloppy. Then again, he normally wasn't with girls for this long.

"Are you seeing someone else?" Jade accused him.

"Oh come on Jade," Damon complained. "Do you really think that I would-"

"What am I supposed to think with you sneaking around all the time?" Jade cut him off. "Just tell me what it is that you're doing." She shrugged helplessly. "Is it drugs, or-"

"I'm begging you to drop this Jade," Damon said. He couldn't tell her, he couldn't involve her in his secret or the life he lead. He wanted them to go on as long as they could, but not wanting to involve her and his secret coming close to being exposed, he knew that he would have to be leaving soon.

Jade woke up after her short nap, in bed by herself. Her door was open a crack and she could hear Damon out in the hall on the phone. He was keeping his voice low, but she could still hear him. It sounded like he was arguing with someone, and she quickly figured out that he was talking to Klaus.

"If you want to keep her around, I would suggest coming to dinner tonight," Damon warned him, though he wasn't sure who he was kidding threatening an original. Then again, Klaus loved Jade more than anything. Since he had found out he had a daughter he wanted nothing more than to know her, to have a family. "And coming clean," he tacked on at the end. "Because I'm not lying anymore." Figuring he must have hung up, Jade laid back down quickly to pretend to be asleep. Not even noticing, Damon came back in a laid down with her again. After she felt like enough time passed, she started to stir like she was waking up.

"Morning," Damon teased, kissing her head.

"Morning," Jade smiled back. "Where did you go?" she asked curiously.

"Ah, Stefan called," Damon lied. He did want to get out and talk to Elijah though before this dinner; he was supposed to be working on a way to save Elena since the teenager had decided to just give herself up at the next full moon in order to keep her friends safe. "Are you all right if I go meet up with him then see you at the grille for dinner?"

"Yeah," Jade shrugged. "That's fine."

"Ok," Damon nodded, thankful she wasn't putting up an argument. "I'll see you at seven." He kissed her quickly. "Love you."

"Love you too," Jade said back, watching him go. Once she heard his car leave the driveway, she ran downstairs to talk to Vicki about whatever it was that was going on, knowing she and Damon got to be good friends once she turned.

"Hey, you're up," Vicki grinned at her. She had heard Damon arguing with Klaus too, but wasn't going to say anything to her about it. "Do you want to talk about last night?"

"I don't really remember anything," Jade brushed her off. "Do you know what's going on with Damon?"

"No," Vicki lied. "Why?"

"He seems weird," Jade explained. "He has been against me seeing my dad since he came to town, now all of the sudden he wants to have dinner with him. And I think I heard him on the phone arguing with him about me."

"I'm sure he's just worried about you," Vicki reasoned with her. "You just activated your curse and now your shady dad is in town-"

"Do you want to come to dinner tonight?" Jade cut her off and Vicki looked confused.

"What?" Vicki asked now.

"Matty will be getting done with his shift then and he can come too," Jade reasoned. "I don't want to go to this thing alone with the two of them being weird."

"I think they're always going to be weird Jade," Vicki said gently.

"Ok, well come with me then to be my back up when I confront them," Jade said now and Vicki didn't know what to say. "C'mon, I know they're up to something."

"And you think they'll tell you when I'm there?" Vicki asked in disbelief. "Or even tell you at all?"

She was dancing around the subject since she knew what the plan was. Well, she knew that Klaus was going to go with breaking the curse on him regardless while she, Damon, and Stefan were working with Elijah. Elijah wanted to stop the whole thing while the others were more concerned with just keeping Elena alive. Damon, of course, wanted the curse to be broken so Jade wouldn't have to turn anymore either; Vicki agreed with him, knowing her sister would be in so much pain each time she turned.

"C'mon Vicki," Jade was begging. She didn't want to do this alone, she needed her sister. After all, she didn't know what kind of news she would find herself getting tonight.

"Matty got Jeremy a job at the grille," Vicki was saying. Jeremy pretty much took Vicki's place since she quit after she turned, with enough going on as it was without having to worry about her schedule waiting tables. "And with our breakup it'll be really weird to see him this soon." She knew she was grasping at straws, thinking of any excuse possible to keep Jade from doing this.

"Vicki," Jade crossed her arms over herself. "I'm about to have dinner with my vampire boyfriend and my one thousand year old father to see what they're up to, all after I turned last night and am trying not to be weird around Damon since I woke up with Mason this morning."

"You what?" Vicki demanded now.

"So don't tell me about awkward or weird," Jade brushed her off. "You're coming and we're going to find out what they're doing."

"You woke up with Mason this morning?" Vicki asked, the subject change seeming to work in Jade's favor since Vicki wasn't fighting her on dinner anymore. "Like, together together?" She gasped. "Did you two-"

"No," Jade shook her head. "But we were still..." She felt like she could talk to her sister about it now. "Naked."

"Do you-"

"I don't have feelings like that for him," Jade cut her off, then studied her expression. "What?" she sighed in exasperation.

"It's just, with you two being wolves," Vicki was explaining. "There's supposed to be this connection, an attraction-"

"Not you too," Jade complained. She got enough of this from Damon, especially now with her activating her curse; she knew he was unhappy that she even went with Mason last night though there wasn't any other option if she wasn't going to be alone.

"You don't think Damon has any right to be paranoid?" Vicki asked.

"I think he's up to something with my dad," Jade changed the subject. "And we're going to find out what."
