Who's Side Are You On?
"So, Jade's pregnant?" Stefan was saying on the phone the following morning, a day after Mason had moved into the house as well. Damon had put off calling his brother because he knew how the conversation was going to go, but by now he was sure that Matt said something to Caroline who would obviously tell Elena. Stefan knew before he even answered Damon's call.
"Yep," Damon nodded casually, taking a seat on the couch, everyone else still asleep that morning.
"And, you're clearly not the father," Stefan continued, wondering why his brother was so calm about all of this.
"Nope," Damon shook his head, sipping on a glass of his breakfast.
"And, the father," Stefan continued to prod. "Mason, who you hate, has moved in with you guys."
"Uh huh," Damon nodded along.
"Not only that, but you're living with her father," Stefan continued. "Klaus. Who you also hate."
"You have a knack for pointing out the obvious brother," Damon commented, finishing off his food.
"And you're just ok with all of that," Stefan said skeptically.
"I don't know why no one believes I'm ok with her having a baby," Damon said, having a similar talk with Vicki the night before; even Jade seemed to be walking on eggshells around him, like he would leave her at the first sign of trouble.
"Her having a baby, fine," Stefan agreed with him. "I don't doubt that you would give her a baby if you could. But you're not becoming a dad, Damon. You're becoming a step-dad to Mason's kid. Mason, who you know is in love-"
"Let's not go there," Damon commented.
"Ok, let's go here," Stefan changed the subject. "How thrilled is Klaus that she's having a baby?"
"You would never see a thousand year old twenty something so happy about being a grandfather," Damon murmured.
"And, do you think it would be the same level of excitement if it was somehow yours?" Stefan questioned.
"Why are you being such a downer Uncle Stefan?" Damon smirked.
"Because I know you," Stefan reminded him. "And I don't see this going well."
"You'll see," Damon said, hanging up now as Mason was coming down the stairs. "Morning."
"Hey," Mason said nicely. "Anymore of that around?" he nodded at Damon's glass.
"Basement," Damon said, where the refrigerator was similar to the Salvatore house; Mason nodded appreciatively.
"Anyone else up yet?" he questioned.
"Jade's still sleeping," Damon told him; Mason shook his head at him.
"Are you going to be able to get over this?" Mason questioned seriously.
"I've been over it," Damon said as though it were obvious.
"And you're still making comments like that, why?" Mason questioned sarcastically.
"Both of you, enough," Klaus said, coming downstairs with Vicki; he smiled. "Can't very well watch after our girl if you two are bickering all day."
"We're both watching Jade?" Damon questioned. Obviously, he wasn't going to be leaving Jade's side with her in so much danger. He hadn't really stopped to consider who else might be playing babysitter since, even though, it was his baby.
"Other than myself I can't think of anyone else that would do anything to protect her," Klaus informed them. "I'm going to see Marcel while Vicki tracks down Sophie."
"Where's Elijah?" Mason asked.
"He's already left," Klaus told him, which neither of them realized. "Off to do some witch digging on his own, I assume." He smiled at them both. "Take good care of my daughter," he said, leaving now.
"Good luck," Vicki tacked on, following close behind; Damon wondered who needed luck more. He realized Vicki was probably talking to Jade though when he noticed that she had come downstairs too, dressed and ready for the day.
"Good morning," Damon smiled at her.
"Hi," she greeted him with a quick kiss, Mason excusing himself to go down to the basement. "So, dad's got you two babysitting me all day?"
"Looks like it," Damon nodded. "Did you want to do something today?" he asked lightly, not wanting her to be kept locked up in the house. "I don't know how much exploring we could do around town, but..."
"Elijah actually made me an appointment at a doctor's office today," Jade said now. "To make sure everything is all right with the baby and all."
"Awesome," Damon told her and she looked at him curiously.
"Seriously?" Jade raised her eye brows.
"Yeah?" Damon questioned. "Why can't I be excited about this?"
"Because we never talked about kids," Jade pointed out.
"Because it wasn't an option for us till now," Damon countered.
"Yeah, ok," Jade sighed, nodding. Something about all of this just didn't seem right to her. "Oh, um, Mason," she said as the father to be came back upstairs. "We're heading to the doctor's today. I didn't know if you would want to-"
"What time?" Mason interrupted.
"It's this afternoon," Jade told him. Behind her she could feel Damon glaring at Mason. "You want to come?" she confirmed. She couldn't just not invite him to the doctor's office for their kid.
"Absolutely," Mason smiled at her. "She's my daughter too."
"Daughter?" Damon questioned now.
"It's a wolf thing," Mason told him. "You can tell what you're having way before any doctor can, like an instinct. Both parents can sense it."
"Oh, that's what that is?" Jade was smiling. "I just kept thinking that it was a girl, a weird feeling. I didn't realize it was actually a wolf sense."
"I'll have to get you caught up on all the wolf stuff," Mason told her.
"That's one way to pass the time while we're all stuck here," Jade said lightly, glancing at Damon. "Let's just get to the doctor's today, then go from there."
"Helloooo," Vicki was calling into the empty restaurant, looking for Sophie. She was taking her promise to her mom to look out for Jade very seriously. First and foremost Jade was her older sister and she loved her. That, and Jade had taken care of Vicki for most of her life, before and after she turned. It was Vicki's turn now to take care of Jade. Seeing no one and sighing, Vicki headed back towards the kitchen.
"You can't hide from me Sophie," Vicki said, seeing not Sophie but another witch laying on the floor, getting up slowly from being unconscious. Vicki recognized her from the tomb the other night. "Who are you?"
"Sabine," the other witch rolled her eyes, getting up herself.
"And where's Sophie?" Vicki asked impatiently.
"If you wanna kill her, you're apparently going to have to get in line," Sabine was saying.
"In case you forgot, she's linked to my sister so the last thing I want is to kill her," Vicki said seriously, starting to worry. "What's going on?"
"These other witches showed up and took her," Sabine told her. "My guess is they weren't so excited about the original family moving in with their new hybrid baby on the way."
"Where would they take her?" Vicki snapped.
Vicki left the restaurant and the other witch behind, taking off for the cemetery. She found the tomb where Jade had been held the other night, wondering what she was walking into. She walked in fearlessly none the less, finding Sophie alone, chained to the wall.
"Thank God you're alive," Vicki said, freeing Sophie. "I thought they were going to kill you."
"They're my coven, they're not going to kill me," Sophie told her.
"Even if they're all pissed you're the reason we're in town," Vicki said and Sophie looked at her curiously. "I hear things," she said sarcastically. "Why are they pissed at you, and what did they do to you?"
"They think that baby is going to be the end of the witches," Sophie told her. "Even though I'm trying to save our magic by getting my niece back-"
"You're niece?!" Vicki snapped at her and Sophie didn't realize she had slipped up so badly. "You need to start telling me what's going on right now, starting with why they took you."
"Agnes gave me a shot with this needle," Sophie motioned to where it sat. "It's a dark object, meant to raise a mother's temperature and cause a miscarriage." Vicki's mouth dropped.
"You need to unlink you and my sister now," Vicki said, taking her arm.
"What, are you going to kill me?" Sophie questioned. "Not to mention, if I perform that magic I'm dead. Linking us is what got my sister killed." Vicki released her.
"You're not going anywhere till we figure this out," Vicki said, calling Jade first. Her phone went to voicemail and Vicki forgot she had the doctor's visit today. Knowing he was with Marcel, Vicki tried Klaus; maybe they could lift the magic ban just this once.
"Hello?" Klaus answered.
"We have a problem," Vicki told him urgently. "The witches gave Sophie this magic shot thing that's supposed to cause a miscarriage."
"Marcel," Klaus said, still on the line with Vicki. "I need you to do me a favor."
"What's happening?" Marcel asked curiously. Klaus had told him everything that morning, from how he met Jade to how she was pregnant now. He didn't particularly enjoy that someone else was running his former city right now, but he was focusing on fully getting Jade back and taking care of his family; he could make a plan to take the city back later, but for now they needed Marcel on their side. They were formulating a plan to make it look like Klaus was on the side of the witches against him when Vicki called.
"Sophie's been cursed to have a miscarriage," Klaus explained. "While she's linked to my very pregnant daughter."
"Get 'em unlinked," Marcel agreed. He was obviously skeptical of Klaus's intentions, but he knew it was a good thing to have a happy original on his side. "One time magic deal." Vicki heard him and smiled.
"K, get to unlinking," she was saying to Sophie.
"No way!" Sophie continued to protest, which the others heard. "I need your sister to keep Klaus here, that's my only leverage." Vicki looked like she was ready to snap. "What are you going to do Vicki, kill me?" she reminded her.
"She's right," Klaus stopped Vicki. "Get her to the house to help slow down whatever's going on with Jade. Remind her that if Jade loses the baby, Sophie also loses her leverage. We'll find another way out of this," he said, hanging up the phone.
"There's no way the other witches are going to unlink them," Klaus was saying to Marcel now. "Not if they want my grandchild dead."
"Relax," Marcel was assuring him. "I have someone that can help, someone that hates those witches as much as you do." He paused. "It's going to take her awhile, she doesn't have the best focus on her magic yet, but-"
"Just get her," Klaus urged, letting Marcel go while he went to check on Jade.
Jade felt so uncomfortable at the doctor's office, feeling like everyone was staring at her. While she knew she didn't do anything wrong, that the things that happened between her and Mason wasn't their fault, it still felt strange to be walked back to the small room where her appointment was, to explain to the nurse who Damon and Mason both were. Jade had hopped up to sit on the observation table while Mason sat in the plastic chair along the wall; Damon seemed to do a lot more pacing these days.
"Are you sure your neck is ok?" Damon was asking Jade worriedly. On the car ride there she had jumped, yelping in pain as she felt like she had been stabbed. They all knew it had to be something to do with Sophie, but none of them were willing to confront that fact out loud.
"Yeah, yeah," Jade nodded reassuringly. "I'll be fine, maybe I just slept weird."
"Or it was something with that human voodoo doll," Mason said finally; Damon gave him a look. "Hey, I'm sorry," he said. "But whatever happens to Sophie happens to her. And whatever happens to her happens to our daughter."
"Nothing's going to happen Mason," Jade promised him. "I'm sure my dad is going to have us unlinked by the end of the day." They all stopped, hearing a knock at the door.
"Hi," the doctor smiled as she peeked her head in before coming in the whole way. "You must be Jade."
"Hi," Jade greeted her. "Nice to meet you."
"And..." The doctor paused. "Which one of you is the father?" she asked politely.
"That would be me," Mason half raised his hand.
"Nice to meet you," she told him. "And you're," she paused, looking at Damon. "His brother, hers?"
"Her boyfriend, actually," Damon commented and the doctor picked up on his salty tone.
"We couldn't have kids," Jade said, which was the truth. "So, um, Mason helped us out with that." Mason and her exchanged a look, one where he tried to keep from laughing and she just shrugged; Damon wanted to be in on that look, for Mason to be the one watching.
"Quite the modern family you have here," her doctor smiled, coming over closer. "So, we'll just get an ultrasound today and..." She trailed off as she felt Jade's skin. "Jade, honey, have you been feeling sick at all lately?"
"Not really," Jade said as she got the thermometer. "I've been pretty lucky on the morning sickness front." She stopped talking so she could have her temperature taken.
"You're at 103," the doctor said worriedly. Jade went to say something, but her father came into the room now unannounced. "And who are you?"
"Her father," Klaus pointed at Jade.
"What?" she asked in confusion.
"Leave us," he compelled her and she just left.
"What's going on?" Jade asked him.
"We have to get you home," Klaus told her. "Sophie is waiting for us there, looking to actually be helpful for once." He explained everything, what happened to Sophie and what it was going to do to Jade's body, to the baby.
"Marcel is working on a way to unlink you now, but it's going to take some time," Klaus finished.
"We have to get her home," Mason said. "Slow the fever. Sophie will be there and I know some older remedies..."
"Oh, that's good," Damon was saying sarcastically as he was helping Jade hop off the table; she nudged him.
"What do you suggest?" Mason asked him. "Vampire blood? Because that's already in her system and she's not healing."
"Look, Mason," Damon was saying. Klaus was checking Jade over, feeling her head and she felt like she was on fire.
"I really wouldn't be surprised if you wanted to just let this-"
"Hey!" Klaus stopped the two of them; Damon was already heading out the door. "Where do you think you're going?"
"Straight to the source," Damon informed them. "Everyone's worried about getting Sophie, here's an idea, let's get the witch that cursed her to stop it." And, with that, Damon was gone.
As much as they tried to slow the fever down, Jade's temperature continued to rise through the night. Damon and Elijah were looking for the witch that cursed Sophie, successfully finding her, but not having much luck after that since she said the curse of a dark object couldn't be undone. While Marcel still worked with Davina to unlink Jade and Sophie, the others remaining gathered outside at the house. Vicki suggested taking Jade into the pool, the cool water lowering both of their temperatures.
"One of you get in here," Sophie said and Mason got in, Klaus trying from the side to call Elijah or Marcel again, Vicki nervously pacing. "Ok, pick her up, it'll help her relax." Mason picked her up, moving them towards the further end of the pool, away from Sophie and Klaus who he knew were stressing Jade out right now.
"Wow," Mason said, holding her in one arm while using his free hand to feel her head.
"What?" Jade asked curiously.
"I mean, when I said you were hot," he teased her, just trying to get her to smile for once today; it worked.
"Oh my God," Jade half laughed. "That's such a dad joke."
"I gotta practice," Mason said lightly; Jade's laughter turned into tears. "Oh no, don't do that Jade," Mason comforted her as she hid her head against his shoulder to cry, kissing the top of her head. "It'll be fine, I promise." He offered a weak smile while she still wouldn't look at him. "A lot of guys have been butting heads over this, but you really don't have anyone better to be looking out for you."
"Mason, I have to tell you something," Jade said, looking at him now, wiping at her tears.
"Ok," Mason nodded to encourage her.
"In all of this," she motioned around. "Getting brought here and being hexed and..." She swallowed hard. "Listening to you and Damon all day long." She gave up. "No one asked me what I wanted."
"What do you want Jade?" Mason asked her softly, knowing what she meant. No one talked to her about actually having the baby.
"I didn't know," Jade said, her eyes welling up again. "Last night I...I found wolfsbane in the cellar."
"Oh Jade," Mason sighed heavily.
"I didn't take it," she said seriously. "Because I had to talk to you, then all of this happened and..." She bit her lip as more tears flooded her eyes. "All I want to do is protect her. I want her."
"I'm happy to hear you say that," Mason said genuinely. "And you're going to have her, all right? We're going to take care of her."
"Ah!" Jade winced, reaching for her abdomen.
"Sh, sh, sh," Mason soothed her, lowering her into the water. "How did it go?" he was asking now; Jade realized Elijah and Damon were back.
"How do you think?" Damon was asking, peeling off his jacket and climbing in the side of the pool.
"Agnes is dead," Elijah was telling Klaus who was calling Marcel again.
"Well, I'd ask which one of you did it," Mason was commenting, passing Jade over to Damon in the water. Her wet hair sticking to her face, he pushed a piece away while Damon was holding her.
"She wasn't helping and they need to get it through their heads not to mess with us," Damon said, adjusting his hold on Jade. "Once they're unlinked, Sophie will be lucky to make it out of this pool," he said just loud enough for the young witch to hear.
"Their elder is already dead, we don't need to add to the count," Jade stopped him. "They're already trying to kill me."
"I'm not going to let them kill either of you, all right?" Damon promised, kissing her head. He noticed something when he kissed her; her temperature had gone down.
"Marcel!" Klaus nearly shouted when he finally answered.
"You kept calling and she couldn't concentrate," Marcel told him, explaining why he hadn't answered. "It's done, your daughter and her kid should be safe now."
"Thank you Marcel," Klaus said genuinely, breathing out a sigh of relief. Sophie was getting out of the pool, hesitant, wondering what the family was going to do to her now.
"Get your things," Elijah told her and Sophie quickly grabbed her jacket, not second guessing it. Grabbing her keys, she went for the gate but naturally Vicki cut her off.
"Listen," Vicki fake smiled at her. "Elijah and Jade are probably right, that killing you would be a bad idea right now, and I know Damon and Mason are going to listen to Jade. Klaus won't kill you either if his brother and daughter say so." She lowered her voice. "But if you even think of coming near my sister again, I'll make you wish one of them came after you. Do you understand me?" Sophie nodded quickly and silently. "Enjoy your night," Vicki said, opening the gate for her.
"Come on," Damon was saying now as he had helped Jade out of the pool. "Let's go inside and rest." She stopped him, pausing to look at everyone.
"Thank you," she said softly. "For everything."
"Of course Jade," Elijah told her, her father hugging her rather than say anything. Mason went to go inside, but she knew that if she needed anything he would help her.
"We're a family, all of us," he said, looking to Damon. They still weren't getting along but he could appreciate what Damon did tonight. "And we're going to take care of this together."
