Wish You Were Here

Flashback - a few days ago

Hope had started acting like this was the cheesiest thing ever once she hit her teen years, but she secretly still loved it.

Before she would go back to school every year her parents would call her on a three-way video chat. They always did this because during the school year they never could in case someone would overhear. After all, the whole point of calling her Hope Salvatore was to keep who she was a secret. The call was always full of good luck wishes and asking what Hope was taking that semester. She had no idea what else was coming on that call though. Mason had called Jade ahead of time with the news so she wouldn't be blind sided as well; that, and he figured he would need some back up.

"So, Hope," Mason started off and her eyes glanced over at his part of the screen. "I've got something I wanna talk to you about."

"Ok," Hope nodded excitedly. After all, his girlfriend Olivia was a witch. Maybe she had found something to help reunite them. At this point it was anyone's guess on how to fix it.

"I know you've talked to Olivia a few times," Mason told her now, having introduced them a few times when he called her.

"Yeah, she's cool," Hope encouraged him to continue, hoping this was going where she thought it was.

"And," Mason started off. "We're going to be getting married here, in a couple months."

"...oh," Hope said when she realized. She didn't catch her mom on the screen surveying her reaction; she also didn't know Damon was listening in out in the hall. She did catch her dad's worried look though and she wanted to fix it. "Well, it's just ah, that seems fast that's all." It was true. Mason had just started seeing Olivia last spring.

"It may be, a little," Mason said in agreement. "That's, ah, because we're going to have a baby." Hope was silent for a moment with shock. "Hope?"

"Really?" Hope asked. Damon spent enough time around her to note the fake enthusiasm in her voice. Her parents didn't though.

"...yeah," Mason nodded, surprised. He expected his fifteen year old to freak out a little bit.

"That's really great news dad," Hope assured him. "I mean," she shrugged. "I always wondered what it would be like to have a brother or sister." She smiled. "Maybe I can meet them one day."

"Oh, I hope so," Mason assured her with a smile.

"Are you sure you're ok baby?" Jade asked her now.

"Yeah," Hope nodded a little more quickly than she meant to. "Yeah, just um, I still have some packing to finish so...I'll text you both tomorrow when I get to school. Love you," she said now, closing the laptop then letting out a heavy sigh. She heard a knock at her door now. "I know you were listening," she told Damon who took that as a sign to let himself in. "What?" she half snapped at him.

"You wanna talk about it?" he offered.

"Not really," she said, pushing her computer away from her so she could hop back further onto her bed.

"Being the older sibling isn't so bad," Damon started off.

"I said I didn't walk to talk about it Damon," Hope told him seriously. She had always thought about what it would be like to have a brother or sister, but that was when she was eight. She knew her mom couldn't have anymore kids, not with Damon at least. Her dad was never really with anyone until now. Now, as her father was so far away and she couldn't see him, it felt like he was just starting over.

"You know where I'm at," Damon shrugged, heading out of the room.

Hope replayed the events from that day over and over again as she laid in her room. It was the start of this crazy chain of events, which started with her turning a hybrid and ended with her kidnapping her mom. Her grandfather came to town to help find her, though he wouldn't come by the house for Hope's safety. He and Damon went out to the bayou to question the wolves in Jade's disappearance; Freya had gone to talk to the witches while Marcel and Vicki got ready for their meeting with the vampires. All the while Hope kept wondering where her own father was.

"Hope?" she heard a familiar voice saying from her balcony. Her head snapped in that direction and she saw Roman there, quickly inviting him inside.

"How did you find me here?" she asked in confusion.

"I saw your file in Mr. Saltzman's office," Roman explained.

"Hope," they heard Vicki saying on the other side of the door and Roman darted into Hope's closet. "Hey," she said as she let herself in. "You doing ok?"

"Ah, yeah Aunt Vic," Hope nodded with a slight smile. "Yeah, I'll be ok." She nodded at her. "You going out to your meeting?"

"Yeah, just about," Vicki told her. "Between you and me though, I think it was the witches," she told her and Hope nodded. After all, the witches were the ones that took Vicki before she was born, threatening to kill her if Jade didn't end her pregnancy. Their trouble with the witches didn't end until Dahlia was defeated. "You need anything?"

"No, I'm ok," Hope told her.

"Uh huh," Vicki nodded, giving her a sly smile. "Honey?"

"Yeah?"

"Don't let Damon or Klaus catch that boy in your closet," she smiled at her and Hope looked at her in surprise. "C'mon," Vicki told her, giving her a face that asked who she thought she was talking to. Hope fought off a laugh as her aunt left, Roman coming out of the closet now.

"Who was that?" Roman asked her curiously.

"My aunt," Hope told her and Roman eyed her suspiciously.

"...who are Damon and Klaus?" he asked and Hope bit her lip. Someone was going to find out about her eventually, right?

"Um," she hesitated as she started off. "You remember last semester in history, when Alaric was teaching us in history about Mystic Falls?" All the students at the school were some type of supernatural being, so Alaric taught them about the supernatural aspect of the town. Roman nodded as he waited for her to continue. "And we learned about the founding families," she continued. "The Forbes, Salvatores, Lockwoods-"

"Vampires and werewolves, yeah," Roman stopped her.

"Damon Salvatore is my step-dad," Hope told him since he asked about Damon first; Roman seemed surprised, though he should have made the connection as she started talking about the history class. "And...Mason Lockwood is my dad."

"Mason Lockwood turned into a hybrid," Roman said with some disbelief.

"Werewolves can still have kids," she shrugged.

"...who's your mom?" Roman asked hesitantly. After all, in history he had also heard the name Klaus before too when they learned about the origins of vampires in Mystic Falls' history.

"Jade Donovan," she answered and he looked confused.

"The sheriff's older sister?" he asked though no one met any of the other Donovans.

"Older half sister," Hope corrected him. "Same mom, different dads." Roman waited for her to continue. "Klaus Mikaelson is her dad."

"What does that make you?" Roman asked her now.

"HOPE!" Damon was shouting from downstairs now.

Earlier when he and Klaus were talking to the wolves the truth ended up coming out. They confronted them about where Jade had gone and they insisted they hadn't taken her. After all, everyone in the crescent pack loved both Jade and Mason; they were the ones that got their curse lifted and helped get all the factions back together. That wasn't everything though; Mason and Hope were actually part of their pack.

When the Hollow came for Hope they found that it was because she was a Labonair. Mason's grandmother had come from Louisiana and married his grandfather in Virginia. No one ever realized until then that he and Hope were crescents; after all, his grandmother left Louisiana to avoid the death and destruction that seemed to plague their family.

As they were talking to Lisina she was explaining their only concern right now was taking care of Henry, the werewolf that Hope turned. The vampires were after him since he had turned, saying he was a danger to everyone. She thought maybe the vampires took her to try to get an exchange. Marcel reported though that the vampires didn't seem to even know Jade had been in town; Freya was coming up empty with the witches too. They all had a common thread though, messages from Hope asking if they had heard from her dad yet. That, combined with Henry seeming like he was trying to hide something lead Damon to one conclusion.

"You gotta get out of here," Hope was telling Roman.

"But," he said quickly, reaching out to her. He touched her just briefly enough to see where she hid her mother.

"They will seriously kill you," she warned, shoving him out the balcony door. She left her room now, heading downstairs to where her step dad and grandfather were waiting for her.

"Klaus," she said excitedly, running over to hug her grandfather. Her own father wasn't here, no, but she was still excited to see him.

"Sweetheart," he greeted her with a smile. Damon had jumped to this conclusion about what Hope had done but he himself didn't want to believe it. He couldn't think that this sweet girl had grown into someone that pulled stunts not too far off from something he would do.

"Where's your mom Hope?" Damon cut right to the point. With that, Hope slammed the surrounding doors shut, startling both men. They unfortunately realized that Damon was right.

"Where's my dad Damon?" Hope countered and Damon shook his head.

"Hope-"

"Why haven't you called him?" Hope demanded. "What, is this some thing?" she wasn't sure how to phrase it. "About him and my mom, like a jealousy thing?"

"You're out of line," Damon told her. He hadn't had an issue with Mason in years. Klaus had suggested leaving Mason out of it, worried for Hope's safety if more of them were to gather in the city. Damon knew that he had to know though and had been trying to get a hold of Mason since Klaus arrived that morning. Jade was the mother of his child and she had been missing since yesterday.

"Then why isn't he here?!" she screamed at him.

"I don't know!" Damon told her and Hope seemed surprised.

"Damon," Klaus was saying seriously as he was snapping and Damon stepped back, shaking his head to himself as he sighed. He wasn't sure how it ended up the Klaus was being the calm one.

"I don't know where your dad is, Hope," Damon told her gently. "I've been trying him all day, but he's not answering."

"No," Hope shook her head in disbelief. "No, if he knew it was about my mom..." She stopped. "Give me my phone."

"Hope," Damon was saying. He hadn't just been calling Mason, he sent him a ton of messages; Klaus had been as well. He wasn't willing to let Hope get her heart broken if it really turned out that Mason was flaking. He truly hoped that there was some explanation for it all, but it wasn't looking good.

"Give it to me!" she said, her temper flaring and the lights flickering. Damon sighed and gave in, tossing her the phone. She immediately dialed her dad; he would answer her, she was sure of it.

"Hello?" she heard Olivia answering on the other end.

"Oh, Olivia, hi," Hope said in surprise. "Is my dad around?"

"Yeah, he's upstairs setting some stuff up we got for the nursery," Olivia lied with ease. Mason was actually out at the beach right now, searching for his phone that he thought he lost the day before when he was out surfing. She wasn't overly thrilled that the man she was in love with and was living with was constantly trying to find a way back somewhere else. Selfishly, she was trying to drive a wedge further between him and that life.

"Can I talk to him?" Hope asked her quickly. "It's important, it's about my mom." Olivia didn't particularly like that either. After all, she was already very immaturely jealous of the attention Mason's daughter got. Hope wasn't even there, but she was. And now she was calling with a problem about her mother? Who Mason was once in love with?

"Sure honey, let me get him," Olivia said, acting as though she was going but all she did was hit the mute button on the phone. She waited a handful of seconds before turning it back to talk. "You know what sweetie? He wanted me to see if you could call him back."

Hope was stunned silent. Damon and Klaus also couldn't believe that Mason really wasn't taking the call from his daughter. He had been hoping that he was wrong, that Mason just wasn't getting around to his messages, that he wasn't ignoring what was going on.

"Hope? Are you still there?" Olivia asked.

"Um, are you sure?" Hope asked back. "You...you told him it was my mom, right?"

"I did," Olivia assured her. "But, you know how he can get when he's-" She smiled to herself with satisfaction as Hope hung up on her. She turned the phone off and placed it in her purse before Mason would return.

Hope stared at the phone's blank screen for a moment, unable to believe this. She had known she was being irrational when she thought that her father was replacing her with the new baby; at least, that's what she thought. Now he wouldn't even take her call? Not only that, but it was about her mom. And he couldn't be bothered. She screamed as she threw the phone against the wall. Damon expected other things to go flying as they did during her usual panic attacks but nothing like that happened.

"Hope," he tried saying to her.

"I'll take you to my mom," Hope stopped him. "I...I just wanna see my mom," she said, tears springing to her eyes.

"Ok," Damon nodded reassuringly. "Yeah, ok, c'mon," he said nodding for her to follow, Klaus close behind.

The ride to Saint Anne's church was silent, save for a few sniffles Hope was trying to hide from the back seat. Klaus drove along, continuing to glance over at Damon who was on his phone. He thought that he might be trying Mason to tear him a new one but it wasn't his messages that was open. It looked like a travel app. Stopping in front of the church, Hope hopped out of the car first and headed right for the door. Damon and Klaus kept close behind her. Hope explained that her mom was upstairs and right now she just wanted a minute alone with her. Obliging her, they let her go ahead, remaining among the pews.

"What have you got there?" Klaus asked Damon curiously. Rather than answer, Damon showed him his phone, revealing he was leaving on the first flight in the morning for Costa Rica. Klaus gave a small smile. "Thank you, Damon."

"For what," Damon murmured, taking his phone and replacing it in his pocket.

"Restoring my faith in step-fathers," Klaus said lightly, though the statement held a lot of gravity. His own step-father, Mikael, left him broken after abusing him for years, hunting him for centuries after. Jade's step-father, Matt senior, left similar bruises on her soul; he only wished he was the one to kill him. While he knew that Damon would never be like those two towards Hope, it did make him happy that Damon would go through such lengths for her.

"I've never wanted to kill Mason more than I do right now," Damon told him seriously. "How could he-"

"DAMON!" they heard Hope shrieking from upstairs. They both took off in a shot, finding Hope standing in the room over an empty coffin. The coffin wasn't just empty, it was destroyed and there was blood every where.

"Oh my God," Klaus quietly gasped as he looked around.

"Damon, Damon, where is she," Hope was stammering as she started to panic. "She was here, I had her here and I protected her, I...I...I wrote the perfect spell!"

"Hope, hey," he said, taking her arms to steady her to keep her from panicking. "You know you're mom, all right? She is as tough as they come and nothing happened here without a fight." Hope nodded but she still felt like she couldn't breathe. "You've met your grandfather," he motioned to Klaus. "He's not gonna stop till he gets her back."

"He's right," Klaus said, getting his phone.

"Ok," Hope nodded. "Ok, where do we start?"

"We need to get you back to school," Damon started.

"No," Hope protested.

"It's for your safety," Klaus told her now. "I'm going to track down your Uncle Elijah, we're going to need more people on this."

"Where are you gonna go?" Hope asked Damon now.
