Annabeth Chase
Annabeth shut the TV off with a satisfied sigh. She had just finished watching Percy retrieve all her items and thankfully, the big idiot didn't try to fight the entire camp. She always found it weird that the gods could literally watch their entire lives, even on a TV if they wanted to. Annabeth only found it out when Poseidon told her about it, prior to that, she had no idea. It was like they really had nothing better to do. Not that she was any better, she spent so much time watching Percy.
If she was being honest, she had some doubts about sending Percy up by himself. She wanted to go but she just couldn't. For one, Percy would be worrying about her the entire time, which meant his judgement would be clouded. Then there was the fact that she wasn't sure if she could mentally face her former friends. Even her own siblings had turned against her, some of whom she would've never expected to.
Inevitably, her mind drifted towards the young half-blood who caused all of this. During the day, she would join Poseidon and Athena to help them with their planning. At night, however, when she was alone with her thoughts, she desperately wanted to rip Hektor apart. She could care less about what he went through, it didn't justify his actions. Especially after she saw what he did to Percy, sending him to the Underworld would've been a mercy.
Now she had Percy. Her number one fear prior to him coming was Hektor turning him against her. She knew for a fact that she couldn't kill Percy. If it came down to it, she'd knock him out and take him with her then try to find a way to get him back. None of her plans could really work without Percy, he was just too powerful to lose.
Speaking of Percy, he stumbled in through the door, drenched in sweat and breathing like he'd ran a marathon. Annabeth shot up from the couch and helped him walk, not that he needed any help.
"I'm fine, Annabeth!" He grunted as she maneuvered him towards the bedroom.
"You're tired, the least I could do is help." Annabeth said, pushing the door open.
She watched as Percy shrugged off his bag and set it on the bed before flopping down next to it.
"Jason's with us." Percy said tiredly.
"I saw." She replied, "You did good."
"Yeah, well, he almost gave me a heart attack. I'm assuming you heard mostly everything then?"
Annabeth nodded grimly, "We don't have Frank or Hazel. So far, it sounds like this place is the only safe place for us. If we got to Camp Jupiter, we'll just be handed over to Camp Half-Blood and you know what they'll do to us then."
Annabeth dreaded the idea of what would happen if they were both to be captured. She knew Percy would be killed outright, he was too powerful to be left alive. Her fate was a bit more cloudy, she figured she'd be tortured, then killed. Either way, she didn't plan on getting captured anytime soon and she surely wasn't going to let Percy get captured. That was the entire reason she sent Poseidon to Camp Half-Blood to cause a distraction so Percy could make it out with ease.
"I sent your dad to help you." She admitted.
"I know, I heard him in my head." Percy said, "Thanks, I guess. I thought I was screwed when everyone was awake."
Annabeth shuffled over to the duffle bag and opened it, pulling her laptop out and sitting next to Percy, opening the laptop and logging in. The screen lit up and she waited as it connected to every phone in Camp Half-Blood. There were a ton of unread messages for her to look at, but she was mainly focused on the counselors, they were the ones who most likely knew anything about the missing items since they took orders directly from Hektor.
"I'm going to shower real quick, I'm all sweaty and disgusting." Percy said.
Annabeth hummed while looking through messages. Most of them were pretty useless, like the Stolls sending each other memes daily kind of useless. Strangely enough however, she was able to look at Hektor's phone which had some pretty interesting information. He was texting an unknown number, asking them if they were able to steal something before handing it over. Annabeth had no idea who the unknown number was.
The most confusing thing she saw though was the fact that he was texting Clarisse and the other counselors to get ready to retrieve something very important. As soon as she saw the message, Annabeth was certain that she had found at least one of the missing godly items. Then she got confused. Why would Hektor be ordering campers to retrieve something he already had?
Looking through the messages didn't reveal anything except the location of where Clarisse and her party were going. They were headed to Mount Rushmore in five days. That meant she and Percy needed to beat them there.
The bathroom door opened, revealing Percy in nothing but a towel, his hair pointing all over the place. He walked over to the closet and opened it, surprised to see multiple sets of clothes that were his size. His dad must've made some magic happen.
"Percy, I think I found out where we need to go next." Annabeth said.
"Where?" Percy asked while pulling a shirt on.
"Hektor is sending Clarisse to Mount Rushmore to get something. Whatever it is, we need to get it first."
Percy stared at her, "I thought Hektor had the magic items?"
"I thought so too but none of his messages say that he has them. Listen, we have nothing but time, we minus well check this out, if we're wrong, we're wrong, but at least we'll know." Annabeth said, "The last thing we want is for an item to slip right through our fingers."
Percy sat down, "You do realize Mount Rushmore is all the way in South Dakota, right? That's like the middle of the country."
"We've traveled the entire country before, we can do it."
He looked down at his lap before saying, "I'm not going if you aren't."
Annabeth knew it was coming which is why she was glad that she was planning on going with him anyways. Firstly, she wanted to see Mount Rushmore, and secondly, she didn't want Percy blowing up another national monument.
"I'm coming with you." She confirmed, "Someone has to stop you from blowing it up."
"Very funny." Percy deadpanned as he flopped onto his back and cuddled up with the pillows, "I'm exhausted, let me sleep."
"Right, I forgot, princess Percy needs her beauty sleep." Annabeth teased while closing her laptop.
"Fuck you." Percy grunted.
"You already did." She cackled before jumping onto the bed and snuggling up next to him, "Goodnight."
"Night."
Ω
Annabeth's dream was peaceful at first. She was standing in some random person's lawn. Their yard was decorated with exotic flowers, fountains of birds and fish, and the grass was almost just as green as the grass at Camp Half-Blood.
The house she was in front of was big enough to be considered a mansion. Annabeth couldn't help but feel like she'd seen it before, she just didn't know where. It was three stories and was much larger than the Big House. A black expensive-looking Ford was parked in the driveway.
Annabeth knew she was dreaming, so she didn't really care about walking over the lawn and to the front door of the house. She was about to knock when she realized she could just float through the door. As soon as she did that, she heard the excited voice of what sounded like a child.
The inside of the house was very well-decorated. Pictures of nature scenes, cities, and other aesthetically pleasing sights hung from the walls. Vases of various plants were perched on marble white half-columns. She even walked past an antique clock and a very nice ceramic plate set.
Then Annabeth saw the inhabitants of the house. One of them was a woman, she wore a brown suit jacket and a black pencil skirt. Her hair was tied into a messy bun while she dug through her purse for something. She looked to be in her mid-thirties and reminded Annabeth of her teachers in high school. She even had the stiff attitude of her teachers.
Then a boy walked into the kitchen, his blonde hair and red eyes instantly noticeable by Annabeth. Hektor. Now it came to her all at once. She was seeing Hektor's life before he came to camp.
Annabeth didn't understand though, he lived in a nice house and his stepmom looked decent. She'd seen pictures of Percy's stepdad and she could tell that he was a scumbag but this woman didn't seem too bad.
Hektor looked like he was twelve in her dream. He was grinning from ear to ear, his hands excitedly gripping a paper as he bounced up to his stepmom. "Mom, look, I got straight A's!" He said in a bubbly voice.
One look at this lady and Annabeth knew she wasn't his mom. This woman was brunette and her eyes were green, far from Hektor's blonde hair and red eyes. She watched as the woman didn't even look up and only said, "That's good, dear."
"What are you looking for?" Hektor asked.
"None of your business." She said, "Go run along now."
Harsh. Annabeth thought. She'd be ecstatic if her child got straight A's.
Hektor looked around before picking a phone up off the counter and nudging his stepmom, "Is this what you were looking for?"
"No—Wait, yes it is! Where did you find that?" She asked, grabbing it from his hand.
"On the counter, it was—" Hektor was cut off when she slammed the phone into his face.
Annabeth flinched when she saw that. Who beats a kid for helping them?
"Don't you ever put your hands on my things again, you understand me?!" The woman said in a cruel tone, "Next time, I'll cut your fingers off."
Hektor nodded rapidly before reaching for his report card which had dropped to the floor. Hektor's stepmom leaned down and picked it up before ripping it in half in front of him, "Now leave!"
Annabeth watched as Hektor scampered off with tears running down his face. As much as she hated the guy, she couldn't help but feel bad for him. Showing indifference to a kid was one thing but downright hitting them with an object and ripping up something they were so proud of was another. There was no doubt in Annabeth's mind that this happened more than once.
Then her dream changed. This time, she was in Hektor's room at night. He had posters of football players and soccer players on his wall, a golden trophy for middle school soccer perched proudly on his windowsill. Hektor was sleeping soundly in his bed. Now he looked about sixteen, the same age before he came to camp.
A cruel sharp voice whispered, "Wake up, young one."
Hektor shot up and looked around. He leaned over and flicked on a lamp before looking around again. "Hello?" He asked.
"Hello." The voice replied, coming from everywhere yet nowhere at the same time.
"W-who is that? Where are you?" Hektor asked, his voice quivering.
"Neither of those are important. What is important is that I know your mother."
"That's impossible, my dad said he—"
"Your father lied to you." The voice said, "Your mother is alive and willingly abandoned you. I will not, as long as you do as I say."
"And why should I do that?" Hektor asked.
"Because I can offer you the world. You will have respect, fame, power, anything you desire will be yours. All you have to do is follow my instructions."
"And what are those?"
Annabeth could almost hear the voice smiling, "Burn this house down and everyone in it."
"W-what?" Hektor asked, "Who the hell are you?!"
"My name is Kronos…"
