The Easiest Decision

Remus has never been a saint. He wasn't as much of a lothario as Sirius, but he had his share of lovers. Still, his taste in man left much to be desired.

His first serious lover was a musical prodigy. He played saxophone in an orchestra. He was constantly on tours, never home when Remus needed him. And although Remus never caught Juan in the act, he was sure Juan was unfaithful, shagging admirers of his talent.

His next serious lover was Daniel. On the surface, Daniel was perfectly acceptable. He was always polite and gave everyone the courtesy of knowing ahead of time if he was going to be late. Unfortunately, Remus got that courtesy way too much. Daniel was late nearly every night when they dated and even when they briefly lived together. Their sex life was okay, but it was nothing to write home about. When their relationship ended, Remus wasn't as heartbroken as should have been, despite the fact they had been seeing each other for nearly two years.

There were other lovers, but Remus always picked the ones that weren't known for their dependability, and he was left bereft and alone.

And then came along Kingsley Shacklebolt, his knight in a shining police uniform. Kingsley wasn't always on time. His work made that impossible. But he was on time more times than not.

When they were together, Remus felt like he was the only person in Kingsley's world. And it was the first relationship Remus thought might actually go the distance.

One night, while Remus was leaning back against a cushion, Kingsley knocked before entering his loft. "Hey, I didn't expect to see you today," Remus said with a smile, stretching his like a cat as he stood up.

"Well, I was heading home unwillingly," Kingsley started with a look.

Remus chuckled. "You have no more clean uniforms here. You don't have a choice," he lightly rebuked.

"I know, but it's still unwilling, and I was thinking to myself, why am I going home?"

"We just went over this. You don't have any more clean uniforms," Remus said very slowly.

"Yes, but I don't want to go home. We should move in together."

Remus blinked.

"I know it's sudden, and we have never discussed the possibility before, but—"

"Yes," Remus interrupted Kingsley's spiel. "Yes, I want to move in with you."

He didn't even have to think about it as he had with his previous lovers. Kingsley was different. He was reliable. He was faithful. He would be there for Remus. He never doubted Kingsley. And Remus just knew that Kingsley would come home to him every night. It was the easiest decision for him to make.
