For Her Own Good
Remus wanted just a glimpse of her. He knew he should stay away. Any kind of association with him would get her in trouble with her parents. He wasn't going to approach her. He just wanted to see her, to make sure she was doing okay.
He knew she came to Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlor every Sunday, around 2 p.m. He walked into the outdoor sitting area and spied her at a table, dipping her quill into an ink bottle and putting the tip to a piece of parchment. She was so pretty. Her curly black hair fell down her back in soft ringlets. Her bangs almost obscured her sky blue eyes. Her petite figure, slight curves, and pale skin, combined with her hair and eyes, made Marlene look like a porcelain doll.
Remus ached to go up to her, but he held himself back. He knew he couldn't approach her. His staying away was for her own good. It didn't make it hurt any less, though.
He turned slightly, ready to leave before she saw him. Before he could get away, her head looked up and their eyes locked. There was no escaping now.
Remus still made a run for it, walking at as fast as a pace as possible without looking ridiculous by actually running. Marlene was faster, though, and her hand clamped on his arm with two minutes. "Where do you think you're going, Mister?"
Remus took a deep breath. "Marlene, we agreed we shouldn't be together."
"That's where you're wrong. You agreed. I didn't get a say in it."
Remus turned around. "Your parents won't like—"
"My parents don't get a say in it," Marlene interrupted. "Remus, I've never cared that you're a werewolf. I love you. My parents will have to deal with it."
"It won't be easy."
Marlene rolled her eyes. She lifted the parchment she had been writing on. "This was a letter I was working on to you. Listen." She let go of Remus' arm and allowed her attention to turn o the parchment. "Dear Remus, I know you're avoiding me, and I don't like it. I didn't agree with us breaking up in the first place. You made the unilateral decision, thinking you knew best. I love you. I know there might be complications when it comes to having a relationship with a werewolf. I know it won't always be easy. You might have trouble finding a job and society might view our relationship as unhealthy or wrong. But I don't care. All I care about is the fact that I love you. I want to be with you and no one else. Either you believe me or you don't, but I'm not ready to give up on us." Her eyes met Remus'. "That's all I wrote; I hadn't finished yet, but you get the gist of where I was going with it. Don't walk away from me because you believe it's easier. That's a pathetic reason."
Remus blinked. "You're amazing."
Marlene smiled. "I know."
"I still think you might be making the biggest mistake of your life," Remus admitted.
"Good thing I'm not listening to you, isn't it?" Marlene joked with a quirk of her eyebrow.
"Yeah, a good thing," Remus said, pulling her into his arms.
