Meeting the Boyfriend

Remus tried to smooth an errant strand of hair on top of Teddy's head, but it just wouldn't behave itself. He sighed forlornly. "Dad, everything is going to be okay," Teddy said in a voice meant to convince him.

"I know," Remus said, but he didn't sound like he believed it.

Teddy laughed. "Dad, it's not like I don't know Oliver. He's known me since I was a baby."

"Yes, but he was always just your godfather's friend from school. This is the first time you're seeing Oliver as your dad's boyfriend. This is the first time he's seeing you as his boyfriend's son. This is different."

Teddy bit his bottom lip. His dad was so funny. "Dad, we already like each other. He's awesome, and he thinks I'm pretty cool. The fact that we already know each other makes it easier. You need to relax."

Remus took a deep breath. "Believe me. I'm trying."

Just then, there was a knock on the door. They both stayed rooted to their spots.

"Dad, aren't you going to get that?" Teddy asked, a teasing lift in his voice, brown eyes sparkling mischievously.

"Behave yourself," Remus warned him before going to the door. When he opened it, Oliver had a wide smile on his face. "Hey, you." Without thinking about it, Oliver pressed his lips against Remus'.

The older man stiffened, all too aware of his son nearby. He flushed bright red, pushing Oliver away. "Teddy is right there," he whispered harshly.

"Dad, relax," Teddy said again. His dad just didn't want to listen to him. "Hey, Oliver."

"What's up, kiddo? You're dad being an uptight pain in the arse?" Oliver asked, shooting a teasing smirk in Remus' direction.

"Of course," Teddy said, rolling his eyes. "He doesn't seem to understand that you coming to dinner isn't a big deal. Mum wasn't this bad the first time she introduced me to her girlfriend, and I had never even met the girl before."

Oliver chuckled. "Give him a break. He kept help it."

Oliver and Teddy started talking like they were old friends, and Remus felt himself relax. His boyfriend and son were getting along famously, and he suddenly wished he could freeze this moment as pure happiness warmed his entire body, making his insides melt like a gooey marshmallow. The last time he felt this happy was the night Teddy was born. Come to think of it, that moment was also mixed in with nerves.

He sighed. Maybe he should listen to Teddy more often. Obviously, the kid knew what he was talking about, and dinner would be no problem whatsoever.
