Chapter 18

Alice wasn't too thrilled with me but there wasn't anything I could do about that.

I was currently working on stuff for the new Rebellion while she was finishing up my makeup and hair for the group date night.

After having to skip the second half of Monday, the rest of the week had moved quickly. My last week of school was finished and on Monday I would be graduating.

I shook my head not wanting to think about it.

"Bella!" Alice shrieked.

"Oops, Sorry Alice," I said sheepishly.

Alice grumbled lowly. "Just get back to your work and don't shake your head again."

I started to nod but caught myself. "Okay."

I flicked to the next page in the file and sighed.

Marlowe.

My mind easily went back to the day of the camp out Seth had put together. Edward had planned to tell me about their trip to find Marlowe but the intruder had driven it from our minds. It wasn't until we had started backing up for the camp out that I had remembered.

"Hey, how did you're trip go?" I asked as I finished packing my bag.

Edward already had all of his stuff packed up, not that it had taken him very long to do that at vampire speed.

"Kian and Turner had six different places that we checked out. Each place though was deserted. There was evidence that someone had been there years ago, but they were long gone."

He sighed and wrapped his arms around me. "Rohl is looking into other places that he could be, but he isn't holding out much hope."

"Someone must have found out about him."

I closed my eyes and my mind drifted from that day to another day nearly three years ago.

"Bella, do you have a moment?"

I glanced up from my book and met Toby's gaze. For good measure a looked around the empty room.

"Alright smart aleck, I've got a meeting I have to get to so come on."

I closed my book and set it on the coffee table. "So what's this meeting about?"

Toby nodded for me to follow him down the hall. "Someone found out about Ludvig. I'm meeting with Grandpa Ray to figure out the best option to retrieve him."

Poor Ludvig. I sighed as we walked through the family house, going down to the lowest level where most of the offices were.

He led me into his dad's office and went to the farthest wall. He pulled back the picture of the family hanging on the wall and unlocked the family safe. I always thought it was cliche to have the safe behind the family picture, but at the same time only a Higginbotham could remove the picture from the wall to reveal the safe.

Toby reached in and handed me a small box. "You're heading back to your house tonight right?"

I nodded.

"Good, could you take this with you. It's just a few things I made. These were the things your mom wanted to keep." Toby patted my shoulder before heading out of the room.

I glanced down at the small box in my hands and shook my head. Who knows what my mom had decided we needed. She always enjoyed getting Toby's inventions. If she had her way our house would be filled with them.

I lifted the lid and grimaced at all the trinkets. Most of the stuff in the box were little bobbles that could be mistaken as Christmas decorations for on and off the tree.

There were a few handles and doorknob like devices. A small handbag, a cell phone, what looked to be a headset.

I sat up thinking back to the phone that had been in the box.

"Bella would you please sit still, I'm almost done, I promise," Alice groused

"Sorry, but this can't wait." I stood and ignored Alice's protest.

I grabbed my phone and scrolled through all my contacts before finding the one I needed.

"Please pick up."

"Good evening, Bella," Phil answered cheerfully.

"Hi, I really need to know what you did with the stuff from my Mom's house," I rushed to ask him.

Phil hummed thoughtfully. "For the most part, I put everything in storage until you were ready to go through it. I've got some boxes in my shed, but the rest of it I put in a unit."

I crossed my fingers tightly. "Could you please look through the box and if you come across a strange looking cell phone like device could you please send it to me."

"I take it if I find said device to send it directly, no change of hands?"

"Please."

Phil sighed. "I'll get right on that. Night Bella."

"Night," I managed to say before he hung up.

Alice guided me back into my seat. "You think the phone Toby wanted you to have was with the stuff from your house this whole time?"

"I'm not sure if it is the one he wanted me to have, but I remember that he gave my mom a phone that I think looks pretty close to the other one.

Alice nodded thoughtfully as she finished with my make up. She then snatched the folder I had been going through. "Enough of that, it's time to go be teenagers."

She quickly fixed my hair before taking my arm.

We walked arm in arm downstairs to where Jasper and Edward were waiting for us.

The drive to Port Angeles as always wasn't very long. I didn't mind Edward's driving as much as I normally did, but that was for two different reasons. One, Anna and Cissy weren't in the car, and two, it was hard to freak out when Jasper was in the same car as you.

We made good time, but thankfully we weren't the first people at the theater.

I greeted Ben and Angela happily. "So, what movie are we seeing?" I asked after hugging Angela.

Angela nodded towards the poster for the latest rom-com. I had seen the previews for it and hadn't been too interested, so hopefully it wouldn't be too bad.

Mike, Jessica, Tyler and Lauren rode together as a group.

One look at Lauren's face and I knew tonight wasn't going to be fun. I decided right then and there to stay out of Lauren's way.

We bought our tickets and the rest of our group headed for the concession stand.

"Would you like anything?" Edward asked.

The theater was crowded and while the lines weren't too long something just felt off. Whatever it was, the options for food did not sound appealing.

I shook my head before stretching up to give him a quick kiss. "Thank you, but I'm good."

We found our seats and waited for the rest of our group to join us.

Alice sat on my right while Edward sat to my left. His hand found mine quickly.

The movie couldn't hold my attention and I found my mind drifting back to everything that I was trying to work on.

"What are you working on there Bells?" Charlie sat down beside me at the dining room table.

I spared him a quick glance before going back to my map. "I'm trying to figure out the Ley lines."

Charlie scouted his chair closer. "You found the positions of the first ten that Kian and Turner gave you?"

"Uh huh," I mumbled.

"So, where are they?"

I chuckled. "Would you believe that there in places that have become heavily populated or visited?"

Charlie leaned closer so he could see. He pointed to the first Ley line. "Those coordinates, that's Big Ben."

I nodded then pointed out the second one. "This line actually runs the entire length of the Great Wall of China."

"Where's the one settled at Stonehenge?" Charlie joked.

I pointed to last of the ten lines we had.

Charlie stared at me in disbelief.

"It wasn't hard to track down these coordinates." I sighed deeply. "Now if only it was easier to find the newest Ley lines."

I grumbled to myself. "The undermining have to track down the last four Ley Lines before the ten that they know about are useful to them. If we could find them before they could, then we could start protecting the Ley lines. If only we could track them."

Charlie got up from his seat a pressed a kiss to my head. "We'll figure it out, Bella. Just give it some time and try not to stress about it."

"Bella," Alice hissed softly. "You've been spacing out through the whole movie, it's almost over."

I blinked up at the screen. I hadn't realized that I had been over analyzing my work for so long.

Edward pressed a comforting kiss to my temple. "You didn't miss much. The storyline was far to simple to follow and predict. Hardly worth the money we spent to see it.

Alice stared between Edward and eye before giving up with a growl. "You two are ridiculous. It's a romantic comedy, very good in my opinion."

"Well, Bella and I prefer the classics, which you very well know." Edward shot back.

I leaned my head back and waited for the movie to end, not even able to follow the last few minutes to their end.

I didn't know what was up with me. I felt like my mind was on reply, playing the favorite hits of the past randomness. It seemed like anything I saw was triggering my memories.

Something about that sparked an idea. I nudged Edward carefully.

He glanced down immediately, waiting for me to tell him what I wanted.

"I need my information box, I think my spacing out has to do with my brain function."

Edward nodded and moved to get the box, only Alice's hand shot out in front of me and stopped him.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you," she warned cryptically.

I glanced from her to Edward. Whatever she showed him in her thoughts sealed the deal. He leaned back in his seat and took my hand instead of grabbing the box. "We'll check once we're alone."

He leaned closer so he could whisper in my ear. "Alice saw that it would cause quite a stir. Jessica is watching us closely and she would have mistaken it as an engagement ring box."

I subconsciously fingered the ring that was hidden on the chain under my top. I was already getting funny looks for wearing my ring from my grandfather on my left hand, I didn't need any more attention on that front.

I leaned over to whisper to Alice. "Good call."

She shushed me so she could watch the end scene.

When the movie had finished we all headed for our cars, promising to meet at the restaurant.

The drive didn't take long at all, and that was even with the fact that Edward had to drive the speed limit since we were at the end of the group. While we were safely away from the others I checked my information box, specifically looking into my brain function.

"It looks like your mind is expanding, but there's something else too," Jasper told me from the back seat.

Of course, he was looking at his box. Right after Edward and Carlisle, Jasper was the one who checked my information the most.

"It's my memory function," I told him. "I guess it decided that today was the day it would rerecord my memories."

"Rerecord?" Alice asked.

I flinched. This was a hard topic for Alice and I could imagine what she was thinking.

"Just a saying, the transition doesn't rerecord anything in the memory."

If there was one thing that I wished I could do it was find out why Alice doesn't have any of her human memories.

"So, what are we doing for dinner?" Jasper asked to switch topics.

Alice laughed. "We'll get the two meals deal to share as couples, but we'll tell the waiter we'd actually like to split the four meals between the four of us. It won't be a problem.

If only that had been right.

After we had been seated and everyone had ordered their food, the table talk immediately started in on plans for after graduation.

I listened as my human friends, and Lauren discussed their different futures. I tried to stay out of the conversation, not sure exactly what to tell them if they asked.

Thankfully by the time it had gotten to my plans, our food had arrived.

Our waiter placed our four dishes in front of us, and fought back a grimace. What was that smell?

"Thank you?" Alice flashed the waiter a smile that could quite possibly disarm a tyrant.

The waiter was so distracted by it that he almost ran into his fellow coworker.

Edward leaned forward, blocking me from the rest of our tablemates except for Alice and Jasper who were sitting in front of us.

Jasper turned slightly to help block my reaction. "What's wrong?"

"Something smells sour. It's not right." I glanced at the food in front of me and cautiously picked up the roll off my plate. I didn't even get it near my nose before I was certain it was the culprit of the smell.

"What does sourdough rolls smell like to you?" I really fought to keep my voice low so to not alert anyone else.

Edward shrugged one shoulder slightly. "I'd say it smells like how humans describe moldy to be."

I put the roll down, and subtly glanced around the table. Angela had gotten a meal that came with a roll, but she didn't seem to notice the smell.

"Bella's senses are increasing. The sense of smell in particular." Jasper closed the information box, making sure no one noticed it. Though I highly doubted Alice would mind if anyone thought she was engaged.

"Does anything smell good to you Bella?" Alice asked quietly. "Even if your sense of smell is more like ours, you still need to eat. Or do you…? She didn't finish her question but I heard it anyway.

"I won't be wanting your diet until afterward."

She nodded then gestured to her plate. "Take whatever smells the best then."

We carefully fill our plates swapping them between the four of us, while giving me enough time to find what smells good. There wasn't much.

Alice's steamed vegetables smelled fine, and so did the mashed potatoes that came with my order. Edward and Jasper had both gotten steaks, but Edward had ordered his well done in concern for undercooked meats making me sick. Jasper had asked for his steak medium and smelt appetizing unlike Edward's.

My meatloaf smelled as good as the school's version so I definitely didn't dare try it.

Alice's grilled chicken smelled fine so I took a little bit of that too.

As I ate the food I had grabbed I had started to relax. It tasted alright, not as flavorful as what I made at home, but it was decent.

I was starting to get back into the conversations around the table enjoying listening to Ben and Angela's plans that carefully involved the other. Lauren was very enthusiastic about going to Hollywood and becoming a star.

I took a bite of the chicken and gagged as soon as I started chewing.

"Bella are you alright?" Angela stood from her seat, but decided against coming to my side.

I couldn't subtly remove the chicken and there was no way I was swallowing it. I spit the bite back on my plate ignoring the disgusted looks from Lauren and Jessica.

Please, someone find me something, anything to distract them from this moment.

My phone rang and I fought to hide my glee. I held up a finger to let Angela know I would answer her in a moment.

"Hey," I rasped into the phone, trying not to gag in the ear of whoever had called me.

"Bella, there's something wrong with Cissy," Rose whispered yelled into my ear.

"What?!" I gasped loudly. I ignored the glares of the other guests but lowered my voice. "What's happened?"

"Anna wanted to go shopping since all of you went out tonight, so Emmett and I agreed to take her and Cissy to the mall. We just walked passed some new store being put in and Cissy dropped. She's unconscious and nothing we do wakes her."

Edward, Jasper, and Alice managed to do a good job of hiding their shock.

"Bella, I need to know what to do, scratch that I need you here," Rose pleaded.

"We'll be there soon." I got up from my chair, moving my phone so I could talk to the others. "Cissy is sick and she's asking for me, so I got to go. I really enjoyed tonight though, thanks for inviting us."

Angela offered a sympathetic smile. "You're welcome, we're glad you all could make it."

The others nodded their support.

I reached to grab my purse but Edward already had it.

"Come on, let's get you to Cissy." He took my hand and led us to the front of the restaurant.

I went back to my call with Rose. "Alright we're on our way. Now tell me exactly what happened."

I could hear Rose's panic over the phone. "Cissy wanted to walk, so we let her walk between Emmett and me, and Anna held Emmett's other hand. We had just stepped passed the new store and then she crumpled. I've never seen anything like it."

I thought about her description briefly before deciding it wasn't enough. "Let me talk to Anna."

"Hi Auntie," Anna sounded almost as bad as Rose. That didn't bode well.

"What do you think it is Anna?"

I wasn't prepared for her answer.

"I don't know, I've never felt anything like this. Is Cissy going to be okay?" Anna asked.

"If it's what I think it is, then Cissy will be just fine, but I need to talk to Rose again."

"Bella, what's going on?" Rose demanded to know.

"I have a guess but I need to know more about what happened."

"What more can I tell you," Rose snapped.

"Easy there Rose, we're already drawing attention," I heard Emmett tell her.

We didn't want to draw attention to this.

"Whatever you do, don't move Cissy, and try to get rid of whatever crowd you've got forming," I warned.

Emmett snorted. "That's easier said than done sis."

I ignored his jab. "Tell me, did Cissy fold in on herself. Her knees bending and then the rest of her body following until she hit the floor?"

"Yes," Rose replied instantly, a slight hope to the tone of her voice. "Do you know what's wrong?"

"I think so, but I need to check with Grandpa Ray. We'll be there in a matter of minutes so try to relax at least for Anna's sake."

I hung up the phone before Rose could yell at me. Hopefully Anna would be able to help her calm down.

As always Grandpa Ray answered the phone after the set amount of rings. "Everything alright?"

I quickly explained the situation to him. "So, what do you think. It sounds like someone set up a mental teleport station in the mall."

Grandpa Ray sighed loudly over the phone. "That's because it is a mental teleport station. Why anyone would put one in a mall though, I can't figure out."

"That's my thoughts too."

"I'll look into it, but you should hurry to Cissy. Once she comes back she's going to want to talk to you, and I highly doubt she'll wait until she's out of earshot of the normal humans." Grandpa Ray didn't give me a chance to reply before hanging up, something I was all too used to.

I placed my bag in my coat pocket and we all hurried into the mall.

"So what's a mental teleport station?" Edward asked, as he looked for Emmett's and Rose's thoughts to track them down.

I tried my best to explain it to them. "A mental teleport station allows people to meet up in a place through the mind. One person could be coming from China and the other from the states, there's no distance too far, and it's a quick way to communicate. It's especially hand tool we used to make sure we can't be overheard."

"So do you think the new store is the station?" Alice asked.

There was no doubt in my mind that the supposed new store was the platform for the station. "Every mental teleport station has to have a set platform that someone "calls" from. You don't have to necessarily be there just as long as you have the address of the platform. That new store has to be the platform."

We turned the next corner and I could see Rose and Emmett at the end of the way. Alice caught hold of my hand so I couldn't race down there.

"This is amazing," I heard Edward exclaim as we stopped beside Rose.

We all glanced curiously at him.

"Can you see what Cissy's seeing?" Jasper asked in shock. "I can't even sense her. Her body is there but it's as if she isn't there."

Edward nodded sharply. "Cissy's in some room with a man. He's dark skinned very tall, probably near six-five. Short black hair that is graying slightly, and his eyes… strange, I've never seen eyes with a silver edge around the irises.

The relief I felt was instantaneous, even better, Anna relaxed too.

Rose naturally asked, "who is that man?"

I rested a comforting hand on her shoulder. "That's my uncle's, Anna and Cissy's grandfather's, mentor."

Rose nodded, but she still refused to calm down.

I sighed and run my hand through Cissy's hair. "I'll be right back, with Cissy," I added.

"Your mind can be pulled into one of these," I heard Emmett ask before I let my powers call out to Cissy and Lenard.

When I opened my eyes I found myself in the small room with the two of them, much to my surprise though, Alice had figured out how to follow me.

She shrugged. "I kind of guessed that this was an Other world space, so I thought I'd check it out."

Lenard took that moment to wrap me in his arms. "It's so good to see you Bella."

I laughed an hugged him back. "You could have just called if you wanted to see me. No point in dragging my cousin into this place."

Lenard glanced down at Cissy before turning his attention back to me. "I had no idea, Bella. The Undermining has been placing platforms like these all over the place trying to find members of the Other world who have slipped through the cracks. I've been shutting down as many as I can."

He rested his hand on Cissy's head comfortingly. "I was just about to destroy this one, when her powers called out to me and asked to be let in. I assumed it was someone else from the Rebellion not a little toddler."

I went to lift Cissy into my arms, carefully watching my strength. "Cissy's a connector, her powers are instinctively connecting to anything they can from the Other world."

"Aw," Lenard nodded knowingly. "That's a side effect of not living in the Other world. If she was constantly surrounded by the magic in the Other world her powers wouldn't go searching for it."

He tapped Cissy's nose with his finger. "We'll just have to get you something to suppress your powers while you're out in the human world."

"Is that a good idea?" Alice asked carefully. "Suppressing her powers." She glanced warily at me.

"It's not the best thing in my case, but Cissy isn't a transitional creature and she's young. It won't harm her," I reassured her.

I turned back to Lenard. "I assume you know about the new Rebellion?"

Lenard nodded once. "I've been working with Ruby to screen all the newcomers. It's a slow process but at least we're certain that we can trust them."

Cissy poked Bella's cheek like she often saw Anna do. "Auntie, I've got a gift from daddy for you."

I glanced from Cissy to Lenard.

He offered a sad smile which turned out to be more of a grimace. "Toby commissioned it, but I never got a chance to give it to him. I was going to send it to you for a graduation present."

Cissy opened her small purse she carried, taking out a bracelet that filled the whole bag.

It sure was pretty. It was a charm bracelet and it was almost completely filled. I recognized some of the charms for the people they represented.

An apple for my mom, a rainbow for my grandmother. A dove for Grandma Swan. The Higginbotham family crest was there too.

Cissy picked one of the other charms and held it up for me to see. It was a little plaque with a hammer on it. "This one is for my daddy."

That made sense.

"I added something special to the bracelet." Lenard took the bracelet from Cissy and searched through the charms until he found one of a maple leaf. "Hold this one between your fingers and you'll be able to contact me."

"Wow, that's amazing," I told him. It would be awesome to get to spend more time with my uncle's old mentor, but we needed to get back. The thought of being able to call him though helped with the disappointment.

"Should I not be able to answer when you call, I'll try to get back to you as soon as I can." He leaned closer and whispered. "I'm trying to keep my tech out of the hands of the Undermining after all."

Alice and I nodded with understanding.

"Well, we better get going."

Lenard nodded. "It was good to see you and Cissy again. Nice to meet you."

"Oh, sorry Alice." I turned to Alice quickly. "Lenard, this is my soon to be sister, Alice. Alice this is my uncle's mentor Lenard."

"Pleasure," Alice told him kindly. "So, how do we get back?" she asked before vanishing from the room.

Lenard and I shared a short laugh before I left, taking Cissy with me.

When I opened my eyes again I was back with the others, and so were Cissy and Alice.

I was glad to see that they had all relaxed.

"That was amazing," Edward told me as he hugged me close.

I wrapped my arms around him. "Next time, I'll bring you along, I just didn't think it would be wise, given the location."

Edward didn't get a chance to reply.

"You can bring others in there with you?" Emmett practically started bouncing with excitement.

I nodded. "Not all of them allow people outside of the other world, but some do. You just need to have the right information with you."

"Um Auntie," Anna pulled on my pant leg before pointing to Cissy.

Poor Cissy was trying to remain quiet. She knew that she wasn't allowed to talk like an Other world Child when we were out and about, but she really wanted to tell us about the time she spent with Lenard.

Emmett picked her up. "Come on little one let's head home and you can tell us all, about it."

Cissy of course didn't wait until we were back to the Cullens house, so she ended up having to repeat herself as she told us about Lenard telling her stories about her dad and grandfather.

By the time she had finished, all her chatting had worn her out. I picked her up and planned to take her upstairs, but before I could someone knocked on the front door.

Carlisle answered the door and I was surprised to see Angela and Ben on the other side.

Angela waved nervously. "Hi, um we wanted to drop up the food that Edward, Bella, Jasper and Alice didn't get to eat."

Ben handed the bag of their leftover dinners to Carlisle.

"Would you like to come in for a moment." Carlisle took the bag and stepped to the side offering to let them in.

Angela shook her head. "I need to get home, but we all felt kinda bad that they didn't get to finish eating their food, especially since we found out, Edward and Jasper paid for the entire meal."

I glanced towards Edward and Jasper. They both shrugged like it was no problem. I just couldn't figure out when they had the chance to pay for it.

Edward took the bag of food from Carlisle. "I'm just going to toss this."

I headed upstairs, letting Edward explain to the others about my troubles with Dinner.

Instead I helped Anna and Cissy dress for bed and brush their teeth. Once they were all ready for bed the three of us cuddled on Anna's bed. I read them one of the books from their grandmother, then sang them Anna's favorite lullaby.

I didn't even bother to get up once they had fallen asleep.

With a forlorn sigh I closed my eyes. My percentage was getting closer and closer to ninety percent. I didn't have many days left before I'd be giving up sleeping for good. It might be a little uncomfortable, especially since Cissy kicks, but I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Author's note.

Wow that was one of my longer chapters to write, and next week's chapter is going to be even longer.

Next week we're jumping right into the Eclipse storyline, putting graduation and the party after it together in one chapter.

What did you think about Bella's new aspects of her transition? She getting pretty close to the end of her transition.

Do you think Bella will complete the transition, or will she have to be turned early?

Until next week,
