Chapter 22

By morning the Cullen house was back to its usual occupancy and then some.

Tanya and her sisters were helping Rose back up everything the girls would need.

Emmett and Jasper were sparing with Carmen and Esme. I tried hard not to think about Esme fighting the newborns. She was so sweet and loving. Seeing her fight it felt wrong.

"Bella, could I have word with you?"

I turned away from the fight and offered Carlisle a small smile. There was no hiding my worries from any of the Cullens.

Carlisle motioned for me to follow him into the kitchen.

I wrinkled my nose at the smell of Anna and Cissy's cereal.

He offered me a sympathetic smile. "I wanted to discuss your options for food for tomorrow."

I grimaced. I had seen Edward packing food for the girls, none of which sounded remotely good.

Carlisle grabbed a few things out of the pantry. "I'm having Edward and the others bring a larger selection for you. With your diet getting harder to accommodate, I want to make sure you're getting all of the right nutrients."

He finally looked up away from the bags of food and at me. "Your dad and I are concerned about you using your shields again, especially after what happened that one time."

I flinched at that. I had pushed that memory as far back in my mind as I could.

"I don't plan to use my mental shield." Admitting that to myself was harder than I thought it would be. "I know it would be useful, especially against the hunters, but I know that even though I haven't used it in a while, I will be able to use my physical shield. I have so little training with my mental shield, that it wouldn't be safe to attempt using it, especially when I can use the other one."

Carlisle gripped my shoulder, giving it a comforting squeeze. "I'm proud of you Bella, you've come a long way." He didn't need to tell me that he was proud of me, I could see the pride in his eyes.

I leaned into his embrace as he pulled me into a hug. He kissed my forehead then backed up.

"So," he tried for a lighter tone in his voice. "What sounds good for breakfast?"

I caught my chin in my hands, and ignored the girls' laughter. They were almost done with their breakfast, but it would take some time to get them ready to go.

"Eggs and bacon sound good. Burnt bacon," I added.

"Sounds like I'm the one who should do the cooking," Charlie said from behind me.

I smiled as I turned around to see him. He ruffled Anna and Cissy's hair before giving me a one arm hug. "I'll let you know when your foods ready, but you should go get ready. "

Nodding, I kissed his cheek then each of the girls before heading to Edward's room to gather all that I would need.

There wasn't much that I needed to grab. Just a few necessities.

I grabbed my hairbrush, remembering that Blaize would need it to make my doppelganger.

"Are you ready to go?" Edward asked. He reached for the small bag I had packed.

"As ready as I'll ever be," I replied.

Charlie had my food ready when I entered the kitchen again, burnt bacon and everything.

As we had learned, anything that sounded good to me always tasted fine. It made it where I was never allowed to say I don't know anymore when it came to food.

"Thanks dad."

He nodded and went back to cleaning up the dishes he had used.

While I ate, Edward and his siblings finished up packing the bags that Tanya and her sisters would be bringing to the campsite for us.

Everyone was busy when I walked into the garage.

Alice came in with sweaters for the girls. "I can't see you since the wolves will be with you, but I think," she flinched, "you should be prepared for cold weather.

One look outside and how the wind was shaking all the trees, and I didn't even have to look up into the sky to know Alice was right.

There was a storm coming in and despite it being summer the temperature had dropped.

"Expect snow in the mountains." Alice said as she helped Cissy into her sweater.

Anna poked her head out of the sweater Rose was helping her with. "Snow, but it's summer, Alice."

That was my thoughts too.

Alice turned to me then. She pointed her finger at me stopping just short of poking me with it. "After all of this gets taken care of, we're going back to wedding planning."

I nodded obediently. Since getting engaged I had spent hardly any time on the wedding plans. Esme and Alice were planning it for me, and Gi has started to help them since arriving for graduation. I knew I couldn't put it off anymore.

Edward stepped around me in the garage to finish packing the camping gear. "Would you call Jacob and let him know we'll be ready for him and Leah in an hour or so."

I nodded and grabbed my phone.

Jacob wasn't there when I called his house, but Billy promised to call around until he found one of the wolves to pass the message along to him.

"Be careful out there Bella," Billy said.

I nodded before remembering he wouldn't be able to see it. "We will Billy."

"Good, we can't let any of you get hurt if we want to know what the scrolls say," he teased me easily.

Thomas hadn't had time to translate the scrolls for them yet, and promised to do that after the fight was over, before he headed back to Phoenix.

We hung up and pocketed my phone. "We ready?" I asked Edward.

He nodded and we both turned to Rose and the girls.

Anna was the only one who was smiling. Rose wasn't happy that she was told to stay back, and poor Cissy had no idea what exactly was happening.

I wasn't naive enough to believe that she didn't know anything about what was going on. She understood that whatever it was that it was dangerous. Cissy understood danger well for her age.

"Would you give us a moment?" I asked Alice and Edward.

They shared a look and left Rose and me with the girls.

I knelt in front of Anna and Cissy. "I need both of you to listen very closely to me. Okay?"

They both nodded.

There wasn't time to wait, to properly think about my words. "I can't have you leave my sight today, and tomorrow you have to stay by my side until I tell you it's safe."

I made sure to emphasize every single word. "Until I say it is safe you will stay by my side, and you will do whatever I tell you to."

Anna didn't hesitate to nod her head. Cissy immediately stuck herself to my side.

I laughed softly not entirely feeling as bubbly as the sound suggested. I held her tightly.

Then came the hard part. I let my eyes catch and hold Rose's even though my words were for the girls, I was letting her see the depth of how important this was. That way maybe she would get passed this brief separation now.

It was sad that in her attempts to help Anna and me with our bouts of fear of separation, she knew feared it worse than I had.

"I need both of you to understand that tomorrow, I am the only adult you will listen to. Unless I say it's okay, you will listen to no one else."

"Edward," Rose called.

He appeared a second later. "I'm not sure this is a good idea Rose. We need to get going. The wolves have a decent hike to the sight and…"

Rose cut him off. "I know Edward, I'll make it quick." She crossed her arms in front of her and glared up at her brother. "But I need to talk to her. I need her to understand."

I stopped Edward from arguing. I passed him Cissy, than Anna, keeping his arms full so he couldn't strangle Rose. "Call Jacob and let him know it's going to be a little longer, than take the girls to the sight, drive them up there as far as you can in my car then run the rest of the way. Have Emmett drive my car back. Rose can take me to the starting point."

Edward turned his glare to me, concern building in his dark gaze.

"Please," the plea was hardly a whisper, but I was struggling enough at the moment to argue with him when he had me trapped in that worrying glare.

Edward put the girls in their car seats and got behind the wheel looking none too happy.

I hadn't even noticed that Emmett had joined us until I saw him kiss Rose. He rested his large hand on my shoulder before getting into the passenger seat.

Rose didn't say anything, she just gestured for me to get on her back. I did and she took off in the opposite direction.

She stopped in a clearing far enough away that our conversation would safely just be between us. She gestured around the forest.

"Does this clearing work for you or should I find a different one?" She wasn't mad, and at the moment I couldn't tell if that was a good thing.

She sighed loudly before stepping in front of me. I fought the desire to take a step back. I had no reason to fear Rosalie, she wouldn't hurt me.

"Bella," she began slowly. "I need to tell you how I ended up like this." She held her arms out for a moment before dropping them to her side in what seemed to be defeat.

Rose told me her story, her voice soft but full of the raw emotions she had felt all those years ago.

As she finished I couldn't help ache for the life she had lost.

"I know Emmett told you his story, so you know I asked Carlisle to change him for me. I couldn't let him die, Bella." She grasped my arms pinning them at my side. "When I found Emmett, I was given half of the dream that I had wanted since I was a little girl."

She bowed her head. "When you and the girls entered our lives. I was selfish. Everyone wanted to get to know you, to help you. I did too, but more importantly, I wanted Anna and Cissy in my life."

She lifted her head and I saw the tears that she wasn't able to shed. "I saw how much Anna liked me, and I saw the closest opportunity I would ever have to having children of my own."

Her hands gripped my arms tighter and the two of us started to tremble as she shook. "Please, do not take those girls away from me. I had to resign myself to just a few years with them, and then when we found out you were Edward's mate, I suddenly was able to have them until their lives ended. Now that I know I can have them in my life for however long forever is, I can't lose them."

I tried my best to pat Rose's arm since mine were still pinned at my side. "I will protect our nieces with my life, and I know that you know that. I need you to trust me though. I know what I'm doing."

Rose finally nodded and let me go. "I take it you can't tell me what exactly you're hiding right now?"

It didn't surprise me that she had caught that. "No, but as soon as I can, you'll be the first one I tell."

She tried to smile at that but it was far too forced. "Come on, let's get you to Edward before he panics."

I climbed onto her back and she ran to the baseball field. Edward was waiting with the girls. Jacob and Leah were already waiting. Neither moved from the tree line, not wanting to chance ruining the plan with their scents being in the wrong places.

Rose stopped beside Edward, and I got off her back. She knelt in front of the two girls just like I had done before.

Cissy snuggled into her arms and Anna wrapped her arms around Rose's neck.

"Do whatever Auntie Bella tells you to. Okay?"

The two of them nodded and Rose gave them one more hug before running back home.

Edward sighed then turned to the girls and I. "Okay this is what the three of you need to do. You girls are going to walk right in front of your Auntie, and you're going to touch all the trees you pass. Got it?"

Anna and Cissy both glanced up at me and I smiled. I nodded and they turned back to Edward, nodding too.

Edward pointed off to the side. "I'm going to walk with you, but I can't walk right next to you. I'll be able to see you at all time and we can still talk to each other, but I have to stay on my path, on you will need to stay on yours."

The three of us nodded again, and Edward pointed us in the right direction.

Anna and Cissy happily traipsed through the forest, touching every tree we passed.

"Is this right?" I asked after a little while.

I glanced over at Edward who was walking about twenty yards away but parallel to us.

His gaze never left us. "You're doing great."

We fell into peaceful silence as we continued. The wind had started to pick up and I couldn't help worrying. The storm was getting closer.

"Auntie?" Anna glanced back at me.

I took her hand immediately, thinking that she had sensed something. Edward stilled and I knew he was wondering if he needed to come get us.

Anna reached out to stop him. "I don't sense anything, I just had a question."

I sighed with relief and silently encouraged Anna to ask her question.

"Everyone keeps talking about the reset. What is it?"

I paused beside the next tree, resting my hand against it as I thought about how to explain it to her and Cissy.

"Does it have to do with the Ley Lines?" Anna caught hold of the back of Cissy jacket to keep her from running off without us. She was really enjoying our walk. Her powers no doubt were enjoying all the new things she could connect to.

"The reset happens every ten years." My mind went back to when I had been taught about it.

"Our world has its own magic that reacts to what is going on in our life. Before the Undermining took over, every ten years the Other world would spread it's magic over the planet. It was used to rebalance the worlds. The reset reinforces the barriers that make it where the Human and Mythical worlds can't find or even learn about the Other world unless told about it by our kind."

I turned to Edward. "Can you keep us going in the right direction so we can continue walking?"

He nodded, he had already heard all of this when it was explained in the field.

I nudged Anna gently and we started on again.

"Sometimes the reset would happen before the next ten years. If something that caused a lot of destruction happened in the Other world, or worse, if it risked exposing our people, the reset would happen again to protect our secrets."

I brushed at Anna's curls. "That's why the reset isn't occurring in a year that ends in a zero."

Anna nodded thoughtfully. "What else happens?"

I held my hand out so she could see my ring. "Objects like my ring, or the signs the Hunters' use, none of that stuff work on that day. Spells that were said during other resets, are strengthened so they still work, but most of the other spells won't work again until after midnight the next morning."

"So that's why we can't stay at Uncle Charlie's house?" She turned her big doe eyes on me.

"That's right, but since my ring doesn't work, my shield will, so I can protect you two again.

She smiled. "What else?"

The wind whipped through us and I had to pause to catch Cissy. Anna grabbed my leg clinging to me while we waited for the wind to die down.

I didn't dare look towards Edward, not wanting to see his look of 'I told you so' I didn't regret taking the time to talk with Rose.

"Cissy, help," Anna cried. Connect to Auntie.

Cissy rubbed her face against my leg her arms clutching me as tightly as she could.

The wind stopped around us. I reached out in front of me and felt the shield that was blocking the wind for us.

I lifted Cissy into my arms. "Well for one thing, the reset will make all of us stronger. Good job Cissy."

"You're almost to the place where we'll cross their path," Edward called to us. The wind wasn't bothering him any more than wiping his hair wildly about.

"Just ten more steps forward, passed the next two trees then you can turn around."

I hurriedly guided us to the spot and turned us around. With the wind behind us instead of ahead of us Cissy could put the shield down.

She snuggled into my arms worn out from that small feat she pulled off.

Anna stuck close to me too, her hand pressed against my leg. It brought back memories.

"During the reset, the spells that were used to take away powers from the Hunters or other people from our kind are returned. Only for those twenty-four hours though."

"So the Hunters have powers but their tools don't work?"

I nodded. "That's exactly right."

Anna didn't ask any more questions after that. She watched the ground thoughtfully.

It took longer to walk back along the path, but Edward was patient with us the whole way. I knew he was worried about the weather.

We were almost back to the clearing, when Edward swooped forward and took all three of us into his arms.

"Hi," I gasped in surprise. I thought he was going to stay back until we got back to the field.

"We need to get the three of you to the campsite. The storms getting worse, and none of you need to be caught out in it.

He raced through the trees and across the clearing coming to a stop beside Leah and Jacob.

"This storm is getting bad, maybe we should come up with a different plan," Jacob had to yell to be heard over the roaring wind.

I shook my head. "There isn't any other place safe and if we leave the mountain it could lead the newborns into town."

"And if the Hunters find you in town it will be Chaos," Jacob growled. "We know, I just don't like this."

"No one does." Leah rested her hand on his shoulder and the two of them shared a brief nod.

"Anna, can you hold on?" Leah asked her.

"I'm not sure that's a good idea," Edward said, hearing whatever had passed between the two of them.

Jacob held up his arm, showing the hairs sticking up on it. "This is going to be bad, we can sense it. We need to get them to some sort of shelter quickly."

I readjusted my hold on Cissy. Glancing between the three of them. "Whatever you're thinking we need to make a decision quickly.

"It's cold," Anna complained.

Jacob turned disappearing into the trees when he returned he was in his wolf form.

"I thought you were going to carry us, like in your arms." I definitely didn't think they were thinking ride them.

Edward reached down, grabbing Anna and helping her into Jacob's back. He glanced at Leah. "Jacob wants to know if you can keep the girls and Bella from falling off.

Leah glanced at Jake. "I thought we decided one would have Anna and the other would have Bella and Cissy.

The giant russet wolf shook its head.

Edward helped me up onto Jake's back while he explained Jake's thoughts to Leah. "He isn't sure that Anna can hold on. He wants you to hold Anna while Bella holds Cissy, and he'll do all the running."

Leah sighed but climbed onto Jake's back taking Anna into her arms.

Edward took my hand giving it a squeeze. "I'll see you when you get there. Hopefully it won't be too long of a wait."

He took off then in a different direction.

I glanced back at Leah. She smiled before kicking Jake in the side. "Giddy up."

Jake made some sort of coughing laugh like noise so I felt like I could too.

Author's Note

What did you all think about that chapter?

Did you like getting to hear more info about the reset? Did it make sense to you?

I've mentioned this before, but I haven't changed anyone's past (except for Alice's) so that is why I never really put in the Cullens telling Bella their stories.

I hope you all liked this chapter,
