Chapter 23

When Turner said he had everything set up for the girls and me, he meant it.

Edward didn't have to set up the tent they packed because Turner already had one, specifically one that came from our world. It looked just as flimsy as any other tent, but the inside was heated.

Tanya, Kate, Irina, and Laurent were standing guard outside, while Edward remained in the tent with Leah, Anna, Cissy, and me.

I kept my distance from the girl, staying closer to Edward. The tent might be warmer than it was outside, but each hour as the temperature outside dropped so did the temp inside.

It was one of the reasons why I was glad Leah was here. Her body heat was keeping the little girls warm, they fell asleep quickly despite the storm going on around us.

I wasn't as lucky. It was well passed two in the morning before Edward was able to convince me to sleep. My mind was too focused on the fight that would come.

I had felt the effects of the reset as soon as midnight came around. I had taken off my ring putting it in my pocket.

Edward had smiled when I replaced the one with my engagement ring.

I tested my shields, as I expected, I couldn't grasp my mental shield. My physical shield worked alright though.

Not going to bed when I should made a difference in the morning. By the time I had gotten up, the girls were awake, and Leah and Jake had already left.

I emerged from the tent, noticing Seth in his wolf form first.

The others were sitting around a fire. Anna and Cissy were eating breakfast.

Edward's arms snaked around my waist. "I was starting to worry you'd sleep through the entire fight."

I laughed. That would have been disastrous.

"How long before it starts?"

His grip tightened protectively. "Alice told Sam it should be an hour or so."

I swallowed back my nerves and realized that I wouldn't be able to handle eating anything. Edward seemed to notice that too.

"No matter what, we stay together."

"No matter what," he agreed. "The four of us will stay together."

I turned so I could hold him too. I couldn't let the four of us separate at all, for any reason.

I knew when the hour was up.

Seth was no longer pacing. He sat down anxiously.

Edward ushered the girls and I into the tent.

Tanya was standing in front of our small campsite with Kate. Irina and Laurent were to the left, with Seth to the right.

Turner had planned the sight perfectly. With a rock wall behind our tent no one would be able to sneak up on us.

"Auntie?"

I quietly shushed Cissy. "It will be okay, sweetie." I reached out for her and set her on my lap, wrapping my arms around her. "It will be over soon."

Anna climbed onto Edward's lap before reaching over and taking Cissy's hand. I brushed at her curls waiting.

A howl whipped through the air and I instinctively covered Cissy's ears. Anna flinched too covering her own ears glaring in the direction Seth was.

"The newborns have reached the end of the trail, they've got the scent of the others and are splitting up; just like we planned."

Edward paused in his explanation of what was happening. He was glancing down at me.

I took a breath, not realizing that I had been holding it.

He closed his eyes and went back to focusing on the fight. "The first group is in the clearing. We can hear the fighting."

I stretched my shield tentatively.

Edward laughed. "We can hear Emmett - he's enjoying himself."

I glanced down at Anna and Cissy. The two of them both smiled at the thought of their Uncle. I was sure Anna was thinking about Emmett as if he was just wrestling with Jasper.

"There isn't any sign of the Hunters yet, but the second group of vampires are getting ready to fight. They aren't paying any attention and haven't heard us."

"How can they hear us, we aren't there?" Cissy whispered to me.

I laughed. "Edward is telling us what the wolves are thinking. When he says "us" he means the wolf pack."

Cissy nodded and snuggled closer to me.

Edward growled startling us.

"What is it? It's not Auntie right?" Anna blinked up at Edward expectantly.

Edward brushed at her curls in an effort to relax her. "Your Auntie Rose is alright, she's a very smart fighter."

I noticed he didn't answer her question though.

He glanced at me though long and hard.

"My doppelganger working well?"

He merely nodded, his jaw tight thanks to whatever was being heard through the wolves.

"We've got them separated, their unable to protect each other." For a moment he froze before reanimating. "The Hunters have joined the fight. Your dad and his group are too."

Edward couldn't help his reactions as he watched through Seth's eyes.

I fought back actually chuckles seeing Edward shift as if he was there doing the dodging. He'd jab at nothing and pause before doing it again.

I heard Tanya's laugh from outside. They were all listening and stealing glances at Edward.

Kate dropped to a crouch and growled.

So quickly that I wasn't sure how it had happened, I was on my feet and the tent was collapsing in ragged shreds around me feet.

Cissy had her arms tightly around my neck and Edward passed me Anna. She slipped from my grasp, her feet landing with a soft thump on the group. She placed both of her hands around my elbow showing me what she was sensing.

She didn't have to though, it was all unfolding right before my eyes.

Tanya and Kate had launched themselves at two men. Laurent and Irina caught hold of two more.

Edward growled as another leaped at Seth.

Seth dodged him easily. He turned and attacked him growling.

Edward caught a hold of me, moving me back against the rock wall. His eyes pleaded with me to stay.

I nodded once.

"Look out!" Anna cried.

Seth jumped over the Hunter he was fighting catching another with the claws of his front paws.

I knelt down setting Cissy beside Anna. "Okay, it's time for you to do exactly what I tell you."

They both nodded hurriedly.

I positioned them both behind me as I stood up. "Stay right behind me, your backs right against the wall, and close your eyes."

Cissy wrapped her arms around one of my legs hiding her face, while Anna had her arms around my waist.

I reached a hand out and focusing on the men.

"Don't even try that kid." I glanced to my right. Phil emerged through the trees. He ran passed me with two others. One I knew was the other Transitional. His skin was so pale, and his eyes were already showing the signs of changing to red. He had to be at ninety-nine almost to one hundred.

I was suddenly very old news. The hunters read the young man's changes as well as I had. They all knew he would be far more valuable than I was at the moment.

It was like a switch had been flicked. Every hunter abandoned their attacks and gave themselves over to the hunt.

Kate growled lowly. "How's the fight going on down there, because we've got more hunters coming?"

Edward and Seth both paused taking in the scene down there.

Anna's powers filled me and I slammed my hand out towards Tanya. I expanded the shield around our group, gritting my teeth.

A young man I recognized from years of working beside stopped just before he could hit the shield.

I growled at him, letting the animalistic sound carry all of my anger to him.

"Riley."

"Bella, drop the shield," Edward yelled suddenly. I did as he asked and he launched himself at the one who had caused all of this.

Tanya and Kate both hurried to help Edward fight Victoria, but two Hunters dove on top of them. Two more went for Irina and Laurent.

Seth hurried to my side, growling at Riley who was causally walking towards us.

"What's your problem Riley? Couldn't stand being second best."

He snarled back at me. "Check the name Bella, It's Riley Biers, or did you not even bother to look up my sister's information.

My eyes narrowed. What was he babbling about?

Seth bared his teeth growling as he lunged at Riley's throat.

Riley was ready for him. He jumped backwards landing on his toes before using the momentum to launch himself back at the now landing wolf.

They rolled together. Seth struggled to get him off his back.

I threw out my shield hard focusing it right at Riley.

To think he had been one of Grandpa Ray's students. Another transitional, one I had actually worked with. I had helped him keep his transition low when we were kids. I stopped though when he started getting jealous of all the attention Grandpa Ray would give me. It wasn't my fault he didn't want to follow the vegetarian diet.

My knees buckled as a sharp pain pounded against my skull. It spread down my neck and across my shoulder. It didn't last long. With each bone it swept through it left a strange cooling sensation.

The pain grew worse as it struggled to sweep through my right hand.

Seth howled loudly but it wasn't enough to distract me from the pain.

A force stronger than I expected hit me in the back before engulfing me. I glanced down at Cissy. She was still clinging to me with one hand but the other was held out in front of her. She was connecting with my shield again.

She couldn't control it the way I could though, she didn't know how.

Everyone was hit by the shield knocked right off their feet.

Edward jumped to his feet first. Despite my better eye sight all I saw was a blur. Tanya and her sisters were struggling with the Hunters. It was clear that they had started the hunt too. They fought savagely trying to get to me.

I glanced down at my hands, the pain was almost completely gone, but I finally realized what was going on. This wasn't just a simple bone density. I was past ninety percent now. My percentage was practically calling to the Hunters. I was so close, it was driving them mad.

"We need to get them farther away," I heard one of the sisters yell, but I was sure. My mind was still struggling with the last little bit of pain now currently in my feet.

I dragged in a breath and forced my shield out, careful to let in the correct people.

Tanya didn't wait, she ran after the hunters, her sisters and Laurent following after her.

Seth dropped suddenly in front of me.

"Seth!" I gasped.

Riley brushed himself off reattaching a hand Seth had managed to take from him. "Your pet isn't very strong Bella."

I snarled back loudly. "You're a disgrace to your kind Riley. I can't even believe you'd sink so low to actually working with Hunters."

Riley merely shrugged. "You do what you need to, to get what you want. Victoria and I have very similar desires."

"You both don't like being second best?" I shot at him.

I braced myself for the direct hit I'd need to send him all the way down the mountain, but Anna stopped me.

She was sensing deceit.

Riley took a step to round Seth, but he suddenly was grabbed by Seth's teeth.

Seth ripped Riley's leg out from under him. He hit the ground hard, giving me an excellent idea.

I pressed my shield against him, mounting it to the ground, but I only had his chest pinned. He struggled to get up but he couldn't fight my shield.

I closed my eyes not wanting to see Seth rip him apart. Screeches filled the air but they couldn't drown out Riley's screams.

"No!" I heard a high soprano voice yell. It wasn't anything like I had thought it would be.

I turned and allowed myself to meet Victoria's gaze. Out of the corner of my eye I could still see Seth, and I tried to ignore him.

Edward was standing ten feet in front of me, poised to strike. Victoria though looked ready to run. She knew that with Riley gone she wouldn't be able to win.

"You won't get another chance, Victoria." Edward taunted. "Your connection to the Hunters is gone, they won't help you again. She screamed and wheeled in a circle. She was heading for the safety of the trees.

No!

If she left now she'd try again. She would hurt so many people. The anger burned in me and my eyes clouded over. My shield shot out, but this time I used it to trap her here with us.

Victoria hit the shield. Her hands slammed against it as she desperately tried to escape.

She turned, pressing her back against the shield and for one second I was able to see the comprehension in her eyes. She couldn't find an escape her powers couldn't help her now. She knew it, and her eyes darkened fully to black with rage. She wasn't going without a fight.

Edward blocked her every attack, every attempt to get to me. Her rage was so consuming I didn't need to keep the shield up, she wouldn't miss it.

The two of them fought in a whirl of movement, much like a dance. This dance wasn't perfectly choreographed though.

Sharp crunches and cracklings reverberated off the cliff face. Their fight echoed loudly throughout the campsite.

Seth growled and whined, but he didn't try to join the fight. He must have realized that it would be far too risky. Victoria wasn't a crazed newborn vampire, she was lethal.

I violent screech and a scream pulled me back into the fight. Victoria had lost one of her arms.

Anna's powers alerted me to another problem as Edward managed to remove Victoria's other arm.

I was losing control again. I was trembling a clear sign that my speed was trying to take control. Now that I was paying attention I could feel my strength itching to be used too. I moved my hands up so that they were away from the girls, and I attempted to relax my stance while remaining as still as possible. If I moved now, there was a good chance I'd hurt one of the girls.

With her arms gone, Seth jumped into the fray. I closed my eyes as I saw him pin her down. She screamed but it was cut short by the metallic screech.

Author's Note

I'll admit that I am not good with fight scenes. That's why I deviated only enough to make it different while still being able to use most of the same fighting information from Eclipse.

What did you think, I would love to know?

Anybody out there guess the Riley was from the other world? Don't worry in the chapters to come we will be discussing what he was talking about with Bella.

Any guess why his name is so important?

Did Cissy surprise you with her skills?

I hope you all liked this chapter, and let's go on ahead to the next one.

Look out for Zay,
