Chapter 24

I forced my body to remain still, to believe that my feet were bolted to the ground. I wasn't safe to be around at the moment. I was too strong and I needed someone stronger to make sure the girls would be safe.

I needed Edward to take the girls. They were both clinging to me though. Cissy wanted up in my arms. I could sense that Anna did too but she knew, she could sense that I wasn't safe.

I took a shuddering breath, opening my eyes to hopefully catch his.

He wasn't looking my way though. He was moving swiftly around the field, he and Seth were grabbing every dismembered piece of the two corpses.

I scanned both of them, looking for any sign that either of them were hurt.

I found nothing. Neither one of them showed any sign of being hurt. Edward moved with just as much grace as he always did. I couldn't even see a tear in his clothes.

Neither one spared me a glance while they piled all the pieces together. Nor when they covered them with dry pine needles.

Edward pulled a silver rectangle from his pocket. He flipped open the butane lighter and held the flame to the dry tinder. The flames caught at once turning into a raging pyre.

"We need to get every piece," Edward said in a low voice warning Seth.

Together the two of them double checked that no pieces remained, all the while Edward kept his eyes on his work.

The smoke billowed in the light wind sending its strange purple color higher into the sky.

I silently pleaded for one of them to look at me, for one of them to see that I still needed help.

Edward finally turned to me and the girls. But as he took in Anna standing behind Cissy, keeping her between the two of us, and Cissy with her little arms wrapped tightly around my legs, all I could see was fear.

I noticed Seth off to the side sitting and keeping an eye on the fire, but when I saw that he wasn't afraid I paid him little attention.

I didn't understand the wary hesitation. Was it that obvious that I was struggling? I needed him to know that I was but for it to be this obvious with just my body language was more frightening than I could handle.

He raised his hands slowly towards me, moving at an agonizingly slow pace. "Bella?"

My brain wasn't working right, I couldn't get my words to form or my mouth to move. My eyes seemed to be the only thing I could control. They continued to sweep over him despite the fact I couldn't find any injuries.

I didn't dare try to move, worried that my strength might hurt one of the girls. I knew my control was shot.

"Bella, are you alright?" It took me a moment to understand Edward's words. He was still moving slowly towards me and the girl, looking oddly enough like a person would when trying not to frighten an animal.

"I'm," I paused trying to get some sort of control. "I'm afraid," I finally admitted.

Edward stopped in mid step. The pain that appeared in his eyes upset me. I realized immediately what he thought I meant.

My need to reassure him clouded any fears I had about my control. I stumbled to his side before he could back away. Anna and Cissy grabbed me tightly as I flung my arms around him. "I'm not afraid of you, it's me. My strength, I didn't think I could control it."

Edward's pain quickly vanished replaced by understanding and comfort. He wrapped his arms around me, carefully removing the little hands holding on to me.

"Seth, will you take the girls?" He asked.

I buried my face against his chest breathing in his scent. My strength couldn't hurt him and this way I could control my speed.

"Sam and the others are coming up here." Edward whispered. "Alice needs us to get to the field though."

I pulled away so I could see his face. "What happened? Is everyone alright?"

"Everyone is fine," he replied quickly. "She saw Jane and a few other members of the Volturi guard coming they'll be here soon.

I turned to Anna and Cissy. Anna had already come face to face with Jane. She had seen what she could do, I didn't want Cissy to know that fear too. Especially when I wasn't sure I could protect her.

"Gi and Phil are on their way up with Turner. They'll be safe with Seth until the others arrive." Edward sensed my fears effortlessly, but he didn't know what I knew.

Edward gently turned me around so I was facing him again. "Bella, Turner brought more reinforcements than he first had us believe. All the Hunters are being rounded up, there's nothing left on the mountain that the wolves can't handle."

"There's members of the Undermining on the mountain."

Edward froze at my words. His eyes searched my face for any more information. I knew he was trying to delve into my mind no matter the fact that he knew he couldn't. He wanted the answers but he wanted to be respectful of the secrets I needed to keep.

"How many?"

I jumped surprised to hear Seth's voice.

He had gone and changed back into his human form.

My eyes sought out Anna and Cissy They had gone back to the rock wall we had stood beside.

"How many members of the Undermining are there Bella?" Seth asked again. "I thought they couldn't find you here in Washington."

I shook their head. "That's the thing, they aren't here for me." I gripped my hands together, cracking my brace in the process.

Edward took my hands in his. "Bella, what can you tell us about the Undermining and why they are here?"

I closed my eyes so I wouldn't tell him more than I should. "Cynthia saw something else, but the last person on the list, the one they're desperate to find. She's nearly certain she is from somewhere in Washington. There's members all over the state trying to find her."

"Her? She found out it's a girl they're looking for?" Seth asked. "That's amazing. Well, actually that's not so great for her is it?"

"They still can't find me here but they can find the girls." I whispered.

"How exactly does that work, I mean you spend most of your time with the girls. Can't they track you through them?"

I shook my head. "If they were to see Anna, even if I was standing beside her, they wouldn't be able to see me. They'd walk through me if I was standing in front of them as they were walking away. As far as that spell works, I'm not here in Washington if the Undermining is."

I let my gaze go back to the girls, freezing when I saw Anna's confused look. She was sitting on the ground rubbing her arms, cold despite her sweater and coat.

Cissy was walking around, singing her little songs to herself, once again happy as could be even though we had just gotten over a living nightmare.

Anna glanced my way a question ready to ask but never was. Instead of coming towards us after jumping to her feet she ran the few feet that had separated her and Cissy.

I watched as she shoved Cissy with all her might. Her body started seizing. Tremors shook her body as she hit the ground.

"Anna!"

I didn't get a chance to run. Edward had me up in his arms and then he was setting me down beside Anna. He went to Cissy who had landed on the ground nearly a yard away. She clung to him as she cried loudly.

I should have gone to Cissy so he could take care of Anna, he was the one who had gone to medical school after all.

I didn't dare touch her but I couldn't figure out what had hurt her.

I felt Seth kneel beside me before I saw him. He reached out and checked Anna for a pulse, realizing that I couldn't bring myself to move.

Any form of control that I thought I had built was gone. I wanted to hit something, break something. I wanted to destroy whatever had done this to Anna.

"Bella, we heard the scream." I whipped around to see a pack of terrified wolves and Gi and Phil, Turner was one step behind them.

I pointed at Turner. He would know what had happened he could fix her, he would be able to make Anna better, and most importantly he would be able to track down whatever had caused this.

Phil lifted his hands warily. "Bella you need to move before you hurt someone. Stand up slowly…"

"No, she has hardly any control left," Edward warned. He handed Gi Cissy who was still crying. He then came to back to my side, pulling me to my feet. He walked as back a few steps away from Anna, and away from the others. His arms formed a steel cage around me.

I watched Turner, still burning with rage as he studied Anna's still form.

"She's breathing, Bella. She's weak, but she is breathing."

My body sagged against Edward's.

"Go and take care of the Volturi, by the time you get back we'll know what happened to her. I promise." His stern voice wasn't enough to get me to go. I was ready to fight. I wasn't going to leave her side.

Turner left no room for argument. "Go, before Jane decides to start her own hunt. She will, you know. If either of you aren't there she'll hunt you down."

"Of course she will." I hadn't notice the black haze sitting in around the edge of my eyes until it had swallowed me whole.

I was first aware of the cool hands touching me. There was more than one pair, and of different sizes. I knew the pair that was holding me, though I was still lost in my consciousness that I couldn't place a name yet.

Someone had their palm curved to fit my cheek, fingers were stroking my forehead, and someone was pressing lightly against my wrist.

A part of me recognized that this was normal given the situation. I wasn't awake enough to figure out what that situation was though.

The next thing to come were the voices. They were mere hums at first, but grew until every words was understandable.

"Carlisle, it's been five minutes," Edward's voice. He was anxious.

"She'll come around when she's ready, Edward." Carlisle's voice, as always was calm and sure. "She's had too much to deal with today. Let her mind protect itself."

Something about his words pricked at my consciousness. My stomach twisted as the reason why had passed out reentered my mind.

Anna. I didn't want to open my eyes, I knew if I did Anna wasn't going to be there. Turner would have convinced Edward to leave. To let him take care of Anna.

"Her heart rates picking up." Esme cried worriedly but I couldn't find it in me to care.

I needed to get back to Anna. I couldn't do that until I opened my eyes. They were too heavy though.

"Bella, can you hear me." Esme asked, I felt her hand brush at my hair and forehead again.

Then cool lips and were at my ear. Edward's breath washed over me and was almost as soothing as the words he spoke. "Anna is going to be alright. Rose is on the phone with Gi right now. Turner found out what was wrong and as soon as we finish up here, we will be at her side."

AS his words sunk in, I let my grief slowly ebb away. She would be okay, and I'd be with her soon.

My eye lids fluttered open.

"Oh, Bella," Edward sighed in relief. His lips touched mine briefly before pulling away.

"Edward?"

"Yes, I'm here."

I struggled to keep my eyes open. I was suddenly very tired. The black edges were still hanging around my eyes, trying to pull me back.

"Where's Rose."

Edward looked away and before I could ask again Rose had taken the spot previously held by Esme. She rested her head against mine. "She'll be fine, no permanent damage."

I glanced at the crushed phone in her hand before attempting a smile.

"Three minutes."

I struggled in Edward's arms attempted to get him to let me up.

He stood, but didn't let me go.

I wouldn't fight with him now. Instead I chose to look around the group. I couldn't find my dad amongst the group in the field. Had he gone to help Anna too?

All seven Cullens were standing now in a loose semicircle. The Denalis were to our right and everyone from the Other world were to our left.

I had to know. "Where's my dad?"

Esme patted my cheek comfortingly. "One of the young vampires surrendered. The other Transitional and the one who completed his transition before had to go back to the Other world for their protection. Charlie and Blaize went with them, taking back the first group of Hunters."

I nodded, that sounded just like something my dad would do.

"They're coming to the north end of the clearing now." Edward warned.

Slowly the vampires in question joined us on the field.

"Hmm," I recognized the apathy at once and fought my grimace.

"Welcome Jane." Edward's tone was courteous.

Jane stood before us in her nearly black cloak standing in front of four others.

She stared down every single member in our odd group. "I take it these are all members of that other world."

Carlisle nodded, gesturing around the group in a simple form of introduction. "They came to help us protect our newest family members."

Jane's eyes flashed with the slightest of interest. "We tracked this group from Seattle, they were the ones causing quite a fuss in the human world."

She hummed to herself lightly, glancing around the empty field and then at the different stakes of burning remains. "Just out of professional curiosity, how many were there?"

"Eighteen," Carlisle replied.

Jane's eyes narrowed. "Eighteen. Thirteen vampires needed help with five too many?"

A portal from the other world appeared between the guard and us. I held my breath as my dad and Blaize stepped out from it.

"I'm afraid the fight wasn't just amongst vampires." My dad bowed in greeting to the guard. "The creator of the Army of newborns was in league with a group of our kinds' enemies. It's a good thing you never encountered them, your small group wouldn't have survived as a whole."

Jane clearly had never been talked to like that before. I had to clamp my jaw shut to keep from laughing, especially when she found out that my dad was immune to her gift too.

"Well, it's still too bad that we didn't arrive on time. It sounds like it would have at least been entertaining."

She turned her attention away from my dad and back to Carlisle. "Was the creator amongst the group you destroyed?"

Edward inclined his head towards the eastern forest. "I destroyed her and another one. The both of them were an addition to the eighteen."

Jane hummed again before meeting my gaze. "You seem to just attract trouble. May I ask why they were after you?"

Charlie replied before I could. "The woman who started all this, Victoria, she lost her mate and blamed my daughter. She was seeking revenge."

Jane made to turn but paused. "Just curious. Where's your percentage at Bella. I know Aro would love to know once you've completed your change."

The haze at the edge of my eyes remarkable started turning from black to red. "I'm not sure I won't be able to check it until tomorrow. Technical difficulties, I'm sure you know all about."

Jane nodded which actually surprised me. "The reset, I do recall Carlos and Zay talking about that."

She smirked before calling to her companions. "Come, I want to go home."

The five of them disappeared into the trees, and I slumped against Edward.

Zay, something about her name was bothering me, but I wasn't sure exactly what it was.

"Come on, Love. Let's go home."

I spun around to face him. "What about Anna?"

"Turner and the others are already on their way there." Alice tapped the side of her head. "They'll arrive shortly before we will."

Relief filled me. I felt like I could finally breathe.

"You all get back to the little ones," Blaize suggested. "We'll take care of the rest of the stuff that needs finishing."

I wasn't sure I knew what he was talking about but I wasn't going to stay and ask. I was heading home, to Anna and Cissy.

Author's Note

One more chapter down. We are getting so close to the ending of Bella's POV for Transitionals: Eclipse.

This has been one crazy ride and I can't even believe it's almost over.

Do you hate me? I am seriously not happy with myself. How many of you are furious with me, because instead of making Jacob get hurt I had Anna hurt instead? Tell me how made you are.

What do you think happened to Anna? Why do you think she was injured?

Any guesses what's going to happen next?

Final question, who caught the hint I posted last chapter about Zay? Anyone? Have you made the connection about her? Do you remember who Zay Is.

Okay so that was multiple last questions but they all focused on the same thing.

Until next time,
