Chapter 25
Alice said that they would arrive shortly after we would get home. I was pacing in front of the glass window, and had been for ten minutes. They weren't here yet, and Alice was official wrong.
The psychic in question got up from her seat and pointed out the window. "There they are Bella."
She caught hold of my arms, stopping me from attempting to run out of the house.
"Bella, the only reason we've let you pace so long is because you've been working on your control. You don't seriously believe we're going to let you throw that away by racing out the door."
I growled and tried to break free of her grasp.
She sighed. "You're still not strong enough Bella, but I'd appreciate it if you'd stop. Jasper's getting antsy.
I spared Jasper a glance and forced myself to take a deep breath.
Turner walked in the front door, with Gi and Phil behind him. Every member of the wolf pack had assembled outside the glass wall, still in their wolf forms.
"Where do you want me to put her?" Turner asked Carlisle.
Carlisle spared Rose and me a glance. "The couch would be fine, or upstairs in her room."
"If you're going to put her upstairs I want her in my room," Rose spoke up.
Turner glanced down at Anna, than back to Rose. "Then I guess lead the way."
I settled on the couch waiting for them to come back. Gi sat down beside me, taking my hand in hers.
"Where's Cissy?" Esme asked when Turner joined us back down stairs. Rose wasn't with him, had she taken her upstairs?
No, now that I think about it, I don't think I had seen Cissy when they walked in.
Where was she?
I tried to rise from my seat but was stopped. I glared up at Phil.
"Give him a chance to talk, Bella."
Turner rubbed his hands together, meeting my gaze warily. "Cissy is with Grandma Letta, and she is taking her to Grandpa Ray."
Phil shoved all his weight against me as I tried to stand again. "Let him explain Bella before you do something rash."
Jasper got up and took the seat on the other side of me. He placed his hand on my knee, flooding me with as much of his calming influence as he could.
Turner nodded appreciatively to Phil and then Jasper. "Seth explained what happened on the mountain, and I can fill in the details now. I sensed danger, and realized at the last minute that it was Cissy who was in trouble.
"I could a few of my friends and it's been confirmed, the Undermining have destroyed another Ley line, and the next one they need is the one Cissy almost connected to."
My hands immediately flew to my mouth. Tears sprang to my eyes.
Gi wrapped her arms around me tightly. "Grandpa Ray will take care of Cissy, and make sure she's safe Bella. Nothing like this will ever happen again."
But it happened in the first place. I knew about the Ley lines, I'd learned about how connectors and how Ley lines affected them, and yet it never occurred to me that Cissy might connect to one.
"What happens when a connector connects to a Ley line?" Carlisle asked.
Turner sighed. "Connectors can connect their magic to the Ley lines and use it, but only for a good reason. The other world's magic judges the reason why it was connected and in Cissy case her powers would have connected naturally. There's no reason, so it would have killed her."
He shook his head and took a seat in one of the chairs. "Anna sensed the Ley line, she knew the danger she just didn't catch it before Cissy's powers connected. She managed to push Cissy out of the way, but she was hit instead. Thankfully, the line had just been reactivated, so its magic was still weak. Any stronger and…"
He didn't finish. That sentence instead he said, "If I had known that the Ley line was there, I never would have set up the campsite there. I'm so sorry Bella."
"No one besides Avery, knew where that Ley line was." I fought the lump in my throat and won. "What happened wasn't anyone fault. We need to get past this though, and to do that I need to know what Grandpa Ray is going to do to protect Cissy."
Phil gave my shoulder a squeeze. "He's going to use his gift to build her a device, it will suppress her powers whenever she wears it. Like your ring. Any time she leaves the safety of this home or Charlie's she has to wear it."
Emmett got up from his seat. His voice was surprisingly gruff when he spoke. "What is this going to do to her powers? We know that suppressing Bella's powers is bad for her, what about Cissy?"
I offered him a small smile. "Cissy isn't a transitional creature, and she isn't responsible for her family's legacy line. She won't be in immediate danger if she has to suppress her gift."
He nodded. "When will she be back?"
That was a question I'm sure we all wanted to know.
"Grandma Letta figured it would take her a day to find Grandpa Ray, and it will probably take him a day or two to build whatever will suppress her powers?"
"What I want to know is why didn't we just wait for Grandpa Ray to come here?"
We all turned to see rose standing at the bottom of the stairs.
I bowed my head. "Grandpa Ray can't come back to Washington until it's safe for him to. He's being watched by too many people at the moment. It isn't safe for him to leave where he's at."
Turner sighed. "With him unable to travel you isn't sure if he will be able to bring her up or if Grandma Letta will. Either way it is going to be at least a few days."
Rose crossed the room to stand beside Emmett. "So what do we do to help Anna?"
"The best thing for Anna right now is rest." Turner got up. "I'm going to send for a healer, to try to cut down on how long it will take for her to heal, but it isn't going to be over night."
Overnight, over the next few days, Anna still hadn't even gotten out of bed and it was already a week since the attack.
Grandma Letta arrive the night before with Cissy.
Poor Cissy spent the entire night in my arms. She didn't understand the dangers her powers brought her. How could she, she was still a baby. Just barely over a year and a half.
She didn't understand why her sister was spending so much time in bed, and why she wasn't getting better.
That was something I was struggling with too.
The healer Turner had hired came once a day, to give Anna a bit of her healing magic. It always seemed to help at first, but then she'd end up feeling exactly the same.
"Bella," Edward called my name. I blushed when I realized it hadn't been the first time he had called me.
"Anna is awake, and she wants to see you."
I hurried out of Edward's room, careful to watch my speed as I ran at a humans' pace to Rose and Emmett's room.
I knocked on the door and it opened immediately.
Rose was lying next to Anna, a position she had taken up since the beginning. Only moving when Cissy and Grandma Letta had arrived.
Anna was curled into Rose's side looking exhausted, but the fact that she was conscious was enough for me.
Carlisle had his stuff out and was giving Anna a quick check up. He seemed very hopeful.
"Hi," Anna's voice was raspy from being out of use for so long.
I didn't care who was in the room, I scrambled onto the bed and hugged Anna and Rose together tightly.
I wasn't sure how long we had sat there hugging and crying but when I glanced around the room, the three of us were alone.
"Oh, Anna, I promise nothing like that is going to happen again." I pressed my lips to her forehead.
"Auntie, I need to talk to you."
I shushed Anna as gently as I could. "Right now you need to rest, we'll talk when you feel better."
Anna pushed at my arms. "No, Auntie, we need to talk now. Daddy knew about Cissy powers."
What?
I sat up, turning my body so that I was facing Anna. "What do you mean, your daddy new? He never asked about a second Child's power. Only his first born."
Anna shook her head slowly. "He taught me about the Ley Lines. He said they were important, and showed my their sensation. He told me I had to know it and remember it."
"You have got to be kidding me," I gasped.
"I'm not."
And she wasn't. It made too much sense. Of course Toby knew. How else would he have known how to make those books for Cissy? He had been helping us train her gift and we knew it. It had already been said that he knew, so why was it that it just now clicked.
I kissed Anna's forehead again. "Was that all that you needed to tell me Anna. Was there something else?"
She shook her head.
"Alright, I need to go do something."
I walked out of the room and headed for Carlisle's office. His door was open and he was sitting at the desk.
"Come in Bella," he said before I could knock.
He got up from his desk and unlocked one of the filing cabinets. To my surprise he grabbed the phone like device Toby had made. "I don't think you realized you had set this down the night of the party; when you came to see what Alice had seen in her vision. I'd supposed you'd like it back now."
"Actually if you'd lock that up with the other stuff, and get Cissy blanket while you're there, I'd be very appreciative.
Carlisle nodded. He didn't question me, not even when he returned with Cissy's first blanket.
I took the blanket downstairs and searched out Cissy.
I found her in the Kitchen with Grandma Letta and Esme.
Grandma Letta was a strange character. She had been changed a week before her husband had. It always surprised me to think that someone as wild as Grandma Letta was married to a man like Grandpa Ray. I had been reminded many times that Grandma Letta was far crazy than even my mother.
"Cissy," I called.
She paused what she was doing, her hand full of chocolate chips hanging over the bowl of cookie dough. The poor thing looked as if she had been caught stealing the cookies, instead of making them.
I held the blanket by one of the corners. "Cissy, I need to try something, but I'm worried that you won't like it."
Cissy glanced at me warily before looking up at the ceiling. "Will it help my sissy?"
I shrugged. "If I'm right, it can, if not…"
Cissy nodded that it was okay.
I took the corner of the blanket and rubbed it against Cissy's cheek, she flinched back immediately, her hand going to her cheek. "That hurt. It stung."
"Like when you get shocked?" I asked hopefully.
She nodded again. "Is that good?"
"Very good," I replied. "Do you know where the book that has your mommy's power on it is?"
Cissy grinned at me and I helped her down. We went up to the nursery and Cissy found the book I was needing quickly. By the time we had gotten to Rose and Emmett's room, Every Cullen, and Grandma Letta was waiting for us.
We all crowded into the room and I set Cissy on the bed. She was quick to crawl over to Anna.
I rubbed the back of the book with Cissy's blanket, then opened to the first page.
To say I was surprised was an understatement. As I read the words on the pages, Tessa's magic flowed from the book. It wrapped around Anna and she slowly relaxed against Rose's side. She and Cissy were out by the time I had finished the book.
"Bella, can you explain what just happened?" Emmett asked in awe.
I laughed softly, staring at the blanket and the book.
"Before Toby had Anna, he told me that he had learned how to mix magic together, how to give anyone a power. I thought he had been joking, it just wasn't possible.
"But then I remembered how he would tease me about it. He always said you needed something to connect the powers to you, and then an actual power source."
I held up Cissy's book. "I made it so that we could use it to train Cissy's power. If you read it, the power is activated so she can connect to it. But it doesn't really give you powers and someone with powers can't use it."
I held up the blanket then. "Toby had this blanket specially made, and it was the first blanket he ever used with her. She hated it from the beginning, but that was because it was absorbing her magic."
"I still don't see where the connecting puzzle piece was," Grandma Letta admitted.
I bit her lip. "I can't tell you, because you can't protect your mind. And if I were to tell you what I know, your mind would have to be protected.
Grandma Letta opened her mouth to argue, I could see it in her eyes.
"Biloxi."
Alice gripped her head, startling all of us.
Jasper cradled her in his arms. "Alice, what's happening?" He turned to Edward hoping that he could see whatever she was seeing.
We all watched Edward's facial expression change, growing in shock and surprised. It seemed to continue on for ages, but finally the two of them gasped.
Edward reached out a shaking hand for me. I wrapped my arms around him. What on earth had happened to them?
"Alice?" Jasper tried again.
I didn't think I could ever be as shocked as I was the day Alice had read the old language, but I was sadly mistaken.
"My name was Mary Alice Brandon, and I was born in Biloxi Mississippi the year was 1901.
"Dear sweet child, do not utter another word," Grandma Letta warned.
Alice freed herself from Jasper's arms and glared at the older vampire. "Why not?"
I answered, despite the fact I never wanted her to know the truth now that I knew her name. "The Brandon family is the largest family of psychics in the entire world. Most of them have been hunted down and killed, and one of them is a spy for the rebellion. He's worked his way right to the top, trusted completely by the leaders of the Undermining."
Taking a deep breath I continued. "To earn their trust he did terrible things, including having his family's history spelled. If another family member starts talking about their history too much, they get pulled from where ever they are and taken to him; right smack into the heart of the Undermining."
Alice's eyes widened in fright and she stepped back into Jasper's protective embrace.
Grandma Letta moved with her. She rested her hand on Alice's cheek. "I will have my husband come up, I'll tell him it's urgent and he will come. You might not be able to discuss your history or ask your questions about it. But others outside of the family can. He will tell you all that you can know."
She turned on me then. "And you."
I lifted my hands to surrender. "The next time I hear you utter a code name like that, I won't hesitate to pull you over my knee."
I nodded hurriedly. Ignoring Emmett's laughter.
Grandma Letta sighed. "I'm sorry we didn't get much time to learn about each other, but I most go. Young Alice needs to know her past." She glanced around the room before smiling fondly at Anna and Cissy. "And those little ones could use some privacy.
I walked Grandma Letta out of the room, and then out of the house.
She patted my cheek and gave me a stern glare. "I expect an invitation." Then her eyes soften. "Be Happy Bella. Don't let the troubles of the world take away your happiness. Promise me that."
"I promise."
I had plenty of things in my life to make me happy. Plenty of things to look forward to. Glancing back into the house seeing Alice look so down about her past, I knew there was something I really needed to do.
Alice saw it before I could even tell her. "Oh, thank you, Bella." She ran to my side wrapping me in a hug. "Come on, you've got to see your dress."
I laughed but I let her drag me off to see my wedding dress. All the while teasing her about not having her dress ready.
