Chapter 19

Carlisle's POV

Getting off work at a decent hour usually had never meant much to me. With the inability to sleep, anytime I got off work was acceptable for my family and me. Now, though, with Bella and the little girls needing to sleep during the night, I have come to enjoy any day that I was able to get home after five.

I was looking forward to tonight especially. Bella and her cousins were staying the night with Rose and Alice. All the extra time we were getting to spend with the girls was a joy.

When I parked my car in the garage and headed for the house, I was surprised to find my sons sitting outside the house.

"Rose and Alice kicked us out of the house," Emmett explained glumly. "They're having girl time."

I couldn't help chuckling and headed inside.

Esme was waiting for me, a teasing gleam in her eyes. "Laughing at your sons. You should be glad I don't send you out there with them."

That I had to laugh at, because I knew she would. We shared a brief kiss and I headed upstairs to change, before meeting Esme in the kitchen.

Seeing my wife in front of the oven, was a sight I was still getting accustomed to, but she sure looked like she belonged there.

We worked together silently, enjoying listening to the girls upstairs. I hadn't dared to check on them while I had been up there. I knew for a fact Alice was going to go all out for this slumber party of hers.

"The first thing we're going to do is cook dinner." Alice was definitely excited for the night's plans.

"Do I have to eat it? What if it's bad?" Anna's whispered words floated easily downstairs to our ears.

Out of respect for the girl's honest fears, I held back my chuckles. The boys outside tried muffling their own laughter but Alice heard it.

"I thought we told you guys to go hunting!"

"We didn't want to," Emmett shot back. "We wanted to hear gold like that."

That wouldn't sit well with Alice.

Surprisingly though she didn't give any indication that she had heard him, from what I could tell when she walked into the kitchen with the others.

Anna, as soon as she entered the kitchen, dragged a stool over to where Esme was working.

My heart felt like it would burst, seeing how happy my wife was. We were all more joyful and to be honest more full of life; all because of Bella and the girls. I really couldn't see us being any happier.

"Here you go Bella."

I glanced back at the girls curious to see what Alice was giving Bella now. Alice was handing out aprons, having tossed one at Bella. It settled on her head, causing Anna to laugh.

The items were designed brightly, and looked far too fancy to wear while cooking.

I went back to stirring. Alice would be Alice.

"You're wearing it and that is final," Alice warned.

Cooking with my lovely wife, and all the girls, was eventful. Cissy was content to sit in her seat, while we all worked on dinner for her sister and Bella. Anna was more than willing to test everything, even after voicing her concerns earlier. She and Bella seemed to like everything they tried, and the definitely enjoyed the meal.

Esme and I washed all the dishes and Rose and Alice took Bella and the girls upstairs for more slumber party rituals.

I would have figured that the girls would remain up in either Alice's or Rose's room, but after a surprisingly short amount of time, Esme and I heard Alice announce it was time for movies.

All girls came down to the living room, and Esme and I made our way upstairs, giving the girls space.

It wasn't long into the movie that we snuck back downstairs.

Anna was enthralled with the movie. She spoke almost constantly through the movie, whether it was to Rose and Alice, explaining what was to come, or to the characters themselves. She was quite adamant in cheering on the good characters especially the prince.

Fist raised angrily at the picture of the villain, her little voice raised sharply. "You can do it. Beat that old Meany."

The boys all laughed outside, and I couldn't help myself. I laughed softly drawing attention to Esme and me.

Bella glanced back at us, her amusement with Anna showed in her eyes. She smiled and went back to watching her cousin.

The evening was turning out great, but it only got better when Alice jumped with excitement.

"There's going to be a storm tomorrow!" She yelled gleefully.

We were all excited about that. Storms meant we could play baseball, something we all loved but didn't get to do too often.

"Sweet, we can play ball tomorrow," Emmett yelled loud enough even Anna heard him.

She turned to Rose with confusion. "Ball?"

"Baseball," Rose explained.

Anna's eyes lit up and she turned to me, bouncing with her excitement. "I play too?"

There was no way I could tell her no. "Of course you can play." We'd figure it out and make sure she'd be able too.

Anna raced around the couch, and happiness filled me as she hugged me tightly. I hugged her back, thrilled that I had made her happy.

"If she's going to play tomorrow, she'll need a bat." Alice stilled and checked the future. "One of those plastic bats that come with the little plastic balls from a toy store will work. You boys can go get that."

I bit back another laugh, knowing that Alice was trying to get rid of her brothers and Jasper so she could have her slumber party.

Edward's POV

Being forced out of the house by my sisters, wasn't something I think I would ever get used to. I especially didn't like it because I wouldn't get to spend the evening with Bella.

Alice didn't let us into the house until morning.

I headed upstairs to change, thinking about the game. I hoped Bella would enjoy it. Right now she wasn't really into sports and that was understandable, what with her balance and everything, but I hope once she's finished the change she'd enjoy it as much as I do.

"Alice is Cissy going to be okay tonight?" I heard Bella ask as I walked into the kitchen.

Alice checked the future for her and thankfully she didn't see any problems with Cissy. "She'll be fine Bella, the storm won't bother her. In fact she'll be rather calm."

"Good I was wondering if we'd all get to go." Emmett eagerly stepped through the back door into the kitchen. His thoughts were about the game tonight, and wondering about future games once Bella was a vampire.

"What's that?" Anna pointed to the bag Emmett had brought in. She reached her arms up for him to hold her.

Emmett of course gladly lifted Anna into his arms. He loved holding her and her sister. "That is your guys' tent."

"Tent?" We're camping? Anna thought to herself and I held back a chuckle.

Emmett glanced at Bella, confused by Anna's questions. "Does she not know what a tent is?"

"I do too," Anna voiced her objection loudly, crossing her arms over her chest.

"She wants to know why they need a tent," I explained, crossing the room to take Anna. "Carlisle wants us to put a tent up for you and your sister and your auntie, that way you'll be more comfortable."

Carlisle wanted to make tonight's game as comfortable as we could for the Bella and the girls. We bought a tent that you could remove the top cover revealing a clear plastic that was see through. It would allow Bella and the girls a soft place to sit, and protection from the elements of the storm.

Anna nodded eventually, now that she understood.

"I called Charlie, to see if he wanted to watch the game but he said he had to work." Esme walked into the kitchen, giving Bella and the girls a smile. "He wished us to all have a good time."

I handed Anna over to Esme, who more than happily took her. "That was nice of him."

While Anna cooked with Esme I led Bella out of the room, hoping to get some space between the two of them, without Anna freaking out. As soon as we were out of Anna's sight I grabbed Bella and raced up to my room.

"Don't do anything I wouldn't do," Emmett called after me.

The smile I had been sporting fell. Emmett. There was nothing more to say.

I tried to ignore him but his laughing followed me up the stairs.

Once we were inside my room I forced my brother from my thoughts. "Would you care to listen to music with me, while we wait for the storm?"

Bella nodded sweetly. "Yes, thank you."

Sitting with Bella and listing to jazz was far more relaxing than it had ever been before.

It didn't last as long as I wanted it too.

"It's time to go!" Alice yelled loud enough for most of Forks Washington to hear, I was sure.

I sighed and reached for Bella's hand, entwining our fingers together. We met the others downstairs by the front door.

Usually when my family was getting ready for the game, Emmett and Jasper would gather the equipment and we would all head for the field we use. What was greeting us downstairs was better, much better.

Esme had Cissy comfortably in her arms, and the baby was playing contently with a strand of Esme's hair. Rose was worrying over Anna, as she helped her into her coat. She was running over everything that could go wrong tonight. Worry that Anna would get cold, or they hadn't packed enough to eat. The list ran on and on, and I couldn't help but file it away just in case.

Alice had the food for Bella and her cousins all packed away in a picnic basket, and Emmett had their tent. Jasper had all of our gear for the game. Not that there was much. Just a few bats and balls. None of us used gloves. And then there was Anna's new stuff, so she could play too.

I helped Bella with her coat, then helped her onto my back. "Everyone ready?"

The others nodded, answering in their thoughts and we took off for our field.

For the first little while I stayed with my family, but I couldn't help wondering if this was an opportunity that I was wasting.

I could run on ahead and give Bella and Anna some time without each other, but would that upset Anna? We were all heading to the same place, did it matter if Bella and Anna reached there at the same time.

Go for it Edward, Alice encouraged. Rose has Anna distracted and she is enjoying running with her. Anna will be fine. This time, she added as an afterthought.

I stopped in the clearing that we used to play baseball, giving Bella time to look around. She didn't get down though.

"Is there any specific reason why you had to run on ahead of everyone else?" That wasn't what I had been expecting her to say.

Carefully I helped Bella down, setting her in front of me; a grin forming. "I would like to spend some time with you. Alone."

Bella gave me a shy smile.

"I want to be able to take you out without having to bring Anna. I'm trying to test the two of your comfort levels, your tolerance," I continued.

"She's doing better," Bella offered.

That was true. "Yes, she is."

Carlisle's thoughts entered my mind then. He was happy for me, and slightly warry. He checked the surrounding to make sure it was safe for Bella and the little girls.

I turned to him, Bella following my lead.

The others are here now. He thought to me before gesturing to behind us.

The others joined us, and I was glad to see that Anna was still excited about the game. As happy as could be.

I gave Bella a quick kiss on her cheek and helped my brother and father set up the game.

Esme quickly set up the tent for the girls and Bella. She and Rose laid out blankets on the floor of the tent.

Soon everything was ready and we had our teams picked out.

"It's time." Thunder cracked after Alice's announcement.

Alice stood at the pitching mound, while Carlisle settled between first and second base. He'd cover the infield while I took the outfield.

Emmett took a few practice swings, all the while he was egging me on in his thoughts. Rose had already reminded him countless of times to watch his mouth since Anna and Cissy were with us. He promised he would but that meant he'd pester me in his thoughts.

Jasper prepared to be the first catcher since there weren't enough players, and Rose was waiting to bat.

Esme was about to begin the game when Anna hurried out of the tent. She went to Esme and clutched her hand. "I want to play."

Esme gave Anna's little hand a squeeze and smiled. "You can bat after Rosalie."

Rose gave her a smile and Anna waited excitedly beside Esme.

Esme swung Anna's hand sweetly and gathered out attentions. "All right, batter up."

Alice spun the first pitch over the plate and Emmett grumbled loudly in his thoughts. At least he kept them in his thoughts; that was good.

Jasper tossed the ball back with a smile to his mate. Then the game really started.

Emmett hit the next ball with all his might and it soared towards the tree line.

Wow, home run, Anna thought in shock. Thankfully she didn't seem to notice the loud crack that had come with Emmett's hit.

I couldn't let Anna think that it would be a homerun though. After all I needed her to know who the real champion of this game. I pushed myself faster and snatched the ball out of the air.

The others heard my catch, and Emmett cursed loudly in his mind. Threateningly he added this is just the beginning.

That was true, and I was planning to win this game with a large lead. This was my chance to show off my prowess in sports to my girlfriend. As I entered the field I lifted the ball high so Bella could see it.

Once I tossed the ball back to Alice we continued. Jasper and Rose took their turns and then Anna eagerly stood at home plate waiting her turn.

Alice held one of the little plastic balls and moved closer to Anna so she'd be able to see it.

Carlisle spared me a glance and we nodded in silently agreement. We would stay in our places in respect for Anna. Neither of us would dare to move closer.

Anna listened carefully as Emmett showed her how to hold her bat, but she was far too excited to remain still.

Once Emmett had her all ready for the pitch he backed up to play catcher.

"Are you ready?" Esme asked.

"YES!" Anna yelled on the top of her lungs. She was so excited to be learning and playing a new game.

Alice threw the ball, but with her eagerness, Anna swung too soon.

Emmett tossed the ball back to Alice with a reassuring smile to Anna.

Anna was determined to get it right but she missed the second and third pitch too. I could see that she was getting ready to give up.

"Emmett help her," I whispered hardly loud enough for him to hear me.

Emmett moved to Anna's side quickly. "Do you want some help?"

Anna gave him a sad nod.

Emmett got down to Anna level, sitting on his knees behind her, helping her hold the bat. Anna held the bat in her small hands underneath Emmett's, her eyes focused on the ball in Alice's hands.

"Okay Anna, Alice is going to pitch this one, and I'll tell you when we need to swing. How does that sound?" Emmett asked.

Anna nodded. And we all watched silently. We knew that this was going to make the evening. If Anna didn't hit this one she was going to give up and who knew if we'd ever get Anna to try again.

Maybe Carlisle should be helping her instead of me. Emmett thought wildly. Jasper caught his worry and sent him calm.

Alice nodded to Emmett encouragingly, and threw the ball towards them.

"Now!"

Emmett helped Anna swing the bat and it smacked the ball perfectly. It soared past Alice's right side, missing her by an inch.

Anna released her grip on the bat and ducked under Emmett's arms, squealing happily. She ran to Esme, throwing her arms around her.

Emmett called after her. "Anna, we've got to run to the bases." he pointed towards first base.

We all laughed when Anna followed his gaze. She took in the distance to first base and slumped in Esme's arms with a soft, "No."

Emmett wasn't having any of that though. He grabbed Anna and raced to first base, forcing Alice, Carlisle, and I back into the game.

Emmett got Anna to first base in time for her to watch Jasper slid into home plate. Rose wisely decided to stop at third instead of trying to beat Alice home.

I caught the third out and dashed over to the tent. "What do you think?"

"One things for sure, I'll never be able to sit through dull old Major League Baseball again," Bella joked.

I laughed. "And it sounds like you did so much of that before,"

Carlisle joined us. "How's Cissy handling the noise?"

We glanced at Cissy. She was on her back beside Bella, making her baby noises happily. She reached for Bella and Bella offered her hand.

"She's handling it just fine."

I watched as Cissy attempted to reach for Bella's hand, missing it only slightly. She was doing really well for a baby her age, with her hand eye coordination. Only missing a few times.

You're up lover boy, Emmett called cheekily.

"Well I'm up." I headed for the plate, ready to put my plan into action.

Jasper pitched a fastball, and wisely I made sure to keep it low. I wasn't going to give Rose a chance to catch it. Darting as fast as I could I made it to second base before Emmett could get the ball back into play.

Carlisle took his position and Jasper sent him a curve ball.

As soon as it left his hands, Alice whispered, "cover the girl's ears."

Esme quickly covered Anna's ears and seeing her movements Bella covered Cissy just in time. Carlisle hit filled the area with an echoing boom.

Carlisle and I both made it back to home, earning high fives from Alice and Anna; which upset Emmett.

"I thought you were on our team!" he yelled his complaint.

Anna smiled before sticking her tongue out at him, making him pout.

The game continued with eagerness and excitement. Esme as always kept us in line and she made sure Anna had a turn to bat.

The night was going well, and we were all enjoying ourselves. Maybe a little too much. In all our fun we weren't being as careful as we should have.

Carlisle was getting ready to bat when Alice had the vision. She and I watched in concern. My mind was torn in two directions. I was watching the nomads in the vision and hearing Alice think about how they were the same ones she had seen before, the ones that were curious about us. More importantly though I heard Anna's panic thoughts; she was sensing danger.

Alice and I shared a look and I rushed to Bella's side.

I had Bella out of the tent and Cissy in my arms in one fluid movement. My attention couldn't be separated though. I needed to be able to focus on Protecting Bella, so I passed Cissy to Rose. It would be better for Bella and her cousins if one of us was focused on protecting one of them. It would make things easier on all of us.

"Alice?" Esme asked, trying very hard to remain calm for the girls and Bella.

Alice shook her head slightly, upset with herself. "I didn't see - I couldn't tell."

The others by now were standing with us beside the empty tent.

Carlisle stepped up to try to calm her. "What is it, Alice?"

Alice murmured lowly, still furious with herself. "They were traveling much quicker than I thought."

Jasper wrapped his arms around her. "What changed?"

"They heard us playing, and it changed their path."

I felt horrible, and the fact that Alice was blaming herself was only making me feel worse. This wasn't her fault. We knew the nomads were coming, we all should have known better than to expose Bella and the little girls like this.

We all glanced at Bella, then to Anna and Cissy. We needed to get them out of here.

Carlisle turned to me. "How soon?"

I closed my eyes and focused on their thoughts.

This should be fun, a man with blond hair was thinking. He seemed to be excited about meeting us.

A woman with fiery hair was wary but seemed excited too. Perfect time for a game.

The third was the most excited. He had a more relaxed attitude compared to the other two. Finally something more civilized. A game would be fun, and meeting new people would be wonderful.

"Less than five minutes - they want to play."

Carlisle spared Bella and the girls another glance before turning to me. Can you get them out of here in time?

I shook my head. "We can't chance them catching their scent and start hunting."

"How many?" Emmett asked Alice.

"Three," she answered.

"Three! Let them come." Emmett was more than willing to fight them.

"Let's go home," Anna's soft plea, though, made him rethink his thoughts.

She reached for Bella, trembling slightly.

Bella took her, and Anna quickly showed her what she was feeling.

"That is not helpful Bella," Alice growled lowly. "Take down your shield, I need to be able to see you. We'll protect all of you."

I understood she was upset with herself, but that didn't mean she could take it out on Bella.

"Sorry," Bella apologized quickly, I tried to explain. "I didn't put up my shield, it was involuntary. Anna's danger reading is great. We need to get out of here."

"We won't make it before they get here." I hated admitting it to her, but I wouldn't lie, to try to ease her fears.

"We can handle three vampires." Emmett was sure of it, but I didn't like the idea of us fighting. There were too many things that could go wrong.

Carlisle flinched, he didn't like the idea of fighting. He didn't approve of violence, but he especially didn't want Bella and more importantly either of the little girls, to see us fighting. He didn't want to any reason to give Anna more nightmares.

"Let's keep playing," he suggested. "They don't know that we know they are coming." Hopefully we can keep this peaceful.

I didn't know what was going to come of this, but I was worried it wasn't going to be good.

Rose and I helped Bella and the girls back in the tent, where it would be safer for them. It was easier to guard.

Esme brushed a hand against my arm, a movement too quick for Bella or the girls to see. "Are they thirsty?" She whispered out of Bella's and Anna's hearing range.

After a brief check on the nomads I shook my head. They had hunted recently. Their red eyes would most likely terrify Anna.

"You catch Esme, I'll call it now."

Esme took my place and I settled myself in front of the tent.

The others took their positions and the game began again. We were all listening for the nomads, half hoping that we could get Bella and the girls out of here without any trouble; none of us really believing it would be that easy.

"What did Esme ask you?"

I should have known that I hadn't kept that conversation from her. Bella noticed far too much. There was no way around it. "Whether they were thirsty."

The game dragged on even though it hadn't been more than a few minutes.

I turned to right field and the others followed. They all moved to stand as one, in front of the tent, doing their best to block Anna view. Anything to keep her from being scared further.

I highly doubted Bella would look away from the newcomers but I did my best to block her as well.

The nomads walked into the clearing. Two males and a female. The first man stepped aside letting the other pass. It was a sign of respect allowing the leader to take point. It was a farce, though. The man now standing in front of the others wasn't the leader.

This did not bode well.

The threesome move cautiously, the pretend leader glancing warily at Carlisle, then at my brothers who stood on either side.

Carlisle, of course, showed nothing but a polite greeting, while Emmett and Jasper were giving warning glowers, promising trouble if the nomads didn't show some sort of respect for trespassing on our territory.

The three were a sight that was all too common amongst nomad vampires. Tattered clothes from wear, lack of shoes and nature had its way of clinging to them.

Despite his appearance, the one claiming to be the leader had a more civilized air to his thoughts. His skin was a more olive toned than my family's pale, a characteristic that could be derived from where he was born and original skin tone. It made it a little easier to pass as human.

The other two were just as pale as my family, but clearly wild. The woman's blazing red eyes which matched her hair almost perfectly, searched our group fearfully. Much to my surprise, her thoughts had an edge to them. She was purposefully cataloging my family in her mind. For what reasons I didn't know, but it was unnerving. From her thoughts I also noticed that she indicated the third and final man as her mate.

I didn't get the same from him. In fact his thoughts were strangely… guarded. I didn't like how he was eying my family though, especially Bella and the girls.

I hoped Anna wasn't able to see him. His appearance was by far the worse. His light brown hair was dirty as was his clothes. That was nothing compared to his look though. This man was easily the image of what our kind was supposed to be.

The dark haired man offered a smile, but it did nothing to ease my concerns. "We thought we heard a game." His relaxed tone, also didn't help. It only made me anxious. "I'm Laurent, these are Victoria and James."

He gestured to his coven mates and I silently waited for the trouble to descend.

Author's Note

It is getting harder and harder to finish these chapters. The closer I get to the end of the Cullen's POV the harder it becomes. I can't believe that we're almost completely done with the first book in Transitionals.

Thank you all for your patience with my sporadic updates.

So the fun begins next chapter, are there any requests for POV's? I'll let you know right now that when all of the Cullens split to protect everyone I won't be doing either Jasper or Alice's POV. I will be adding their POV's in one shots that will be added at the very end of the book.

With that being said, if there is a scene that you would like from someone else's POV just let me know in a review or send me PM and I'll try to make sure it makes it in at the end.

Until next time everyone,
