Chapter 20

Edward's POV

I wanted nothing more than to get Bella, and the little girls back to our house.

While Laurent seemed peaceful enough, his coven mates were unsettling. Though it made no sense, James and Victoria's thoughts were guarded. Victoria's were far too interested in my family. Taking in as much detail as she could and reviewing it, catalog it. James on the other hand, was thinking with far too much detail, about his hunts.

James was brutal, a monster who enjoyed terrorizing his prey.

I needed to get Bella and her cousins out of here as fast as possible. We'd have to wait till after the introductions; which Carlisle was starting.

He made sure not to call any attention to any one of us. "I'm Carlisle. This is my family, Emmett, Jasper, and Cissy, Rosalie, Esme, and Anna, Edward, Bella, and Alice."

The nomads all turned their attention to Bella and the little girls. Rose and Emmett moved to block their view.
"Do you always keep your snacks in a tent?" Laurent asked.

I snarled loudly, followed by Rose and Emmett, while the others shifted again.

Carlisle's voice was eerily calm, but filled with a chilled threat. "They're with us." He would give them no other warning.

Laurent's voice took on a bewildered undertone. He couldn't comprehend any other reason for us to have human guests. "But they're human."

"Yes," Emmett growled, clenching his fists threateningly.

One glance at my burly brother and Laurent thoughts turned panicky. He struggled to find a diplomatic approach. "It appears we have a lot to learn about each other. I would very much like a chance to learn more."

That was out of the question, especially with James' sudden growing disdain for his coven mate; the one he was making pretend to be the leader. He was setting him up to be the scape goat should they need it to escape from us.

James knew that our family was dangerous, our large numbers were one thing, but Emmett's size and the scars that told of Jasper's skill in fighting was really troubling the man.

"I do not see that as a possibility, seeing as I have three human members in my family." Carlisle replied simply.

"We of course won't hurt the human girls. We won't hunt in your range." Laurent offered immediately, angering James and Victoria.

His intrigue is going to mess this up. I managed to hear from James. The let up in his horrid memories of past hunts surprised me. James clearly realized his mistake though and went back to the gory details.

I didn't know how, but he had to know about my skill. Or at least he knew one of us had the ability to read his mind.

He shared a glance with Victoria and I knew it was time to go.

Carlisle didn't look away from Laurent but he called out to me in his mind. Given the circumstances I think it would be best to let them come back to the house. You, Alice, and Emmett take Bella and the little girls back to Charlie's. They'll be safe there.

He spoke to Laurent. "Very well, we'll show you the way. Jasper, Rosalie, Esme?"

The three of them of them moved as one to Carlisle's side, and Alice and Emmett moved to mine.

I tried to make sure not to move too fast as I helped Bella out of the tent. She had both of her cousins in her arms, not that it made a difference when I picked them up. Carrying the three of them wasn't any more trouble than just caring Bella. And that way, should we have trouble, both Alice and Emmett would have their arms free to fight.

I nodded to my sister and brother. "Let's go."

We walked at a human pace, heading deeper into Fork's wilderness. We would double back and head for Charlie's. I listened carefully to the other's thoughts as they made their way to our home.

As soon as they were far enough away, and we had reached the tree line, we took off running. I hated that I couldn't dash on ahead, to get Bella and her cousins home quicker. I knew that I needed to stay with Alice and Emmett.

"Where we going?" Anna asked. Her voice trembled slightly with fear, but I couldn't answer her. At the moment all that wanted to emerge from my mouth was words that should never be spoken in front of a lady.

When no one answered her, she pressed her little hand against my neck.

The intensity of the danger around us, forced me to stop. Alice and Emmett raced passed before they realized I had stopped.

"What's wrong?" Emmett called as he and Alice headed back to where I was stopped.

The fury that was inside of me forced itself out in slew of ungentlemanly words. Hopefully it wasn't loud enough for Bella or her cousins to hear; Emmett and Alice would just have to deal with it.

Edward? Alice.

Dude, what's wrong we can't just stand around here. It's dangerous. Emmett.

"We need to get back to the house." I growled and headed for our house.

"Why are we heading back?" I heard Alice call after me.

"Slow down, you can't risk being too far from us," Emmett yelled.

A part of me really wanted to ignore Emmett, but he was right; so I slowed down. "Anna says there's danger that way. We need the others."

Emmett and Alice scanned the area diligently as we raced home.

My extra hearing locked onto James' mind and I bit back another string of profanities.

It was clear when we arrived that he and Victoria hadn't gone into the house. Their scents were leading away from it. Laurent's scent though indicated that he was inside. He was waiting with the rest of our family.

If I hadn't had Bella and her cousins in my arms I probably would have grabbed Laurent by the throat. As it was, I couldn't. "He's tracking us,"

Laurent had the decency to give me space. "I was afraid of this. I'm sorry, truly I am."

"What will he do?" Carlisle questioned him steadily.

"I can't be sure, I haven't known James for very long. In my short time knowing him, I've learned he's absolutely lethal. I haven't seen anything like him in my three hundred years. That's why I joined his coven." I checked his mind to make sure he wasn't lying.

He wasn't.

Carlisle shook off his surprise after learning that James was the actual leader. "You're going to have to make a choice." He said eventually.

Laurent gave a brief nod. He spared us each a look before meeting Carlisle's gaze. "This life you have here intrigues me, but I won't go up against James."

"Very well. There is another settlement like ours here in Denali. They can explain this life to you just as easily. Go in peace." Carlisle's offer to let him go peaceful didn't set well with me, but it was the least of our problems. If he ever showed any signs of interest with my Bella later, I'd deal with him.

He hurried out of the house, disappearing into the night. I checked his mind until it was out of my range. He didn't appear to be trying to double cross us.

Good riddance, Emmett thought before turning to Jasper. "So what's this James' deal?"

Jasper reached for Alice, pulling her into his arms before answering. "He and the woman split from us, once we got to the house.

"That doesn't explain why he decided to come after the girls." Emmett grumbled. His anger and concern was growing only making him irritable. In an attempt to calm himself he took Cissy from Bella, only to wind up with both little girls in his arms when Anna clutched his arm.

"What was he thinking about?" Rose extracted Anna from Emmett, needing someone to hold too.

I shook my head as all eyes focused on me. "I didn't get anything helpful. His thoughts were guarded. It's as if he knew that his thoughts weren't safe."

Bella trembled in my arms, she looked terrified. Oh how I wished we weren't discussing this in front of her and Anna. Cissy was still young enough that I doubted she was even aware of the tense atmosphere. She was more than content laying in Emmett's arms babbling softly to herself.

Anna and Bella though were aware of the situation and firmly a part of it, even though I knew for a fact none of us wanted them to have to be. This sort of thing was bound to give Anna more nightmares.

"How close," Carlisle glanced suspiciously outside.

I couldn't hear either James or Victoria, and I hadn't since we arrived at the house. "They're staying outside of my hearing range, so at least past three miles."

We all respectively turned to Carlisle, waiting for his words as leader.

He glanced at Bella thoughtfully, then back to me. "We need a plan, and we need to call Charlie."

None of us had been prepared for Anna's scream.

"NO!"

Rose attempted to calm her by brushing at her curls. "What's wrong Anna?"

Anna turned pleading eyes to Rose. "No Uncle Charlie. Auntie has to stay away." She grasped Rose's hand to show her what she sensed.

Fury was building inside of me as heard through Jasper's thoughts what Anna had felt. Her powers were sensing one thing, and I didn't like it.

Rose turned her panic gaze to Bella. "The danger she's feeling, it's the Undermining."

Bella started to shake her head. "No way. It can't be."

"It is," Anna insisted.

"The Undermining doesn't work with mythical creatures Anna, they're trying to destroy them." Bella struggled to comprehend what Anna was trying to tell us. "Why would they work with the people they are trying to get rid of?"

Anna didn't like being told she was wrong, especially since she knew what she was sensing. She reached her hand out for Bella to take.

Bella took her hand I could practically see all the gears in her mind moving. "They don't," she muttered.

"They didn't!" Anna countered. She crossed her arms in front of her still upset that Bella hadn't believed her right away. "My powers say he's one of them, so he is."

"It explains why he's doing this," Emmett offered. He was strangely calm despite his raging thoughts.

"Let's go home," Anna's request confused me. Hadn't she said Bella couldn't be with her dad?

Understanding and anger flared in me when Bella said, "we need to get to Phoenix."

"No way."

Bella glared at me. "I can't go back to Charlie's now, and if that's the case I need to get out of the state."

"There's got to be a better idea, than you going back to Phoenix," I shot back. From all the talks we had been having, we had come to learn that Phoenix was a hot spot for the Undermining. I couldn't allow Bella to go back there.

"Auntie needs to go to my house." Anna tried to explain. "It's safe from tracker."

"You know he's a tracker." I should have known that Anna would have been able to pick up on James' gift with her six sense. I ignored the others' looks of panic, and fear.

Duh. Anna met my gaze and nodded once sharply. "We go home now."

Much to my surprise Bella took Anna from Rose and sat on the couch with her. "You and Cissy are going to stay with Charlie." So not only was Bella going to go to Phoenix but she wasn't taking Anna with her? Things were getting out of hand very quickly.

Anna liked Bella's idea as much as I did, but Bella didn't give her a chance to argue.

"The bad people know I won't leave you two, so they'll think I'm wherever the two of you are."

A small part of me was able to congratulate Bella for her smart thinking. The rest of my brain still didn't like her plan.

Emmett laughed. "She's diabolical."

I wouldn't call her diabolical, smart maybe, and iratating, but not diabolical.

"James will think you're with Edward too." Jasper sat beside Bella. I definitely did not approve of what he was planning. How could he even think that I would leave Bella's side? I needed to be with her to make sure she'd be safe.

Bella nodded in agreement. "He couldn't have missed how he was guarding the opening to the tent,"

"So you think I should let her go alone," the words came out of my mouth in a hiss.

Do you really think I'm that careless? Jasper yelled in his thoughts. "Of course not, Alice and I will go with her." He fought to control his temper in front of Bella and Anna.

In all honesty I was sure that's what Bella had been thinking, knowing her she wouldn't want to cause us any trouble and would have been on her way on her own if she could. So I hadn't really given it any thought that Jasper might have had another plan.

Bella's my little sister, I wouldn't suggest anything that would bring her harm. Now calm down some, please. We are all worried about her. Jasper tried to help and I really tried to do what he asked, but my nerves were shot.

Alice bounced lightly to my side offering a caring smile. "We'll take care of Bella while the rest of you deal with James." We will take good care of her, I promise.

Anna tugged on Jasper's sleeve, and turned a puppy dog eyes on him. "I go with Auntie."

Jasper placed Anna on his lap. He held her gaze and spoke to her like he would another adult. "You need to stay here, where you're powers will do the most good. We need your sixth sense. Will you stay here with Esme, and Rose?"

Anna didn't want to and we could all see it, but she eventually agreed.

What happened next took us all by surprise, but especially Jasper.

Before he could pass Anna back to Rose or Bella, Anna had felt a great deal of love towards him. Not only that but he could feel that she trusted him.

I knew that there was no doubt in her mind that Jasper was going to make sure her Auntie was safe.

Jasper soaked it all in enjoying the positivity during this rough moment, and kissed Anna's forehead. He stood and passed her to Rose before realizing how close his teeth had been to Anna, and he hadn't even once thought of her blood.

We all congratulated him and his control by throwing our support through our emotions.

Then time caught back up with us. We would have to celebrate another time. We needed to get going.

Carlisle went and grabbed our extra phones. We would leave our regular phones here so as not to be bothered by other calls. "You and Rosalie will take the girls to Charlie, in Bella's car." He gave one phone to Esme and another one to Alice. "Jasper and you will take the Mercedes. You'll need the dark tint in the south."

He turned to Emmett and I, pocketing the third phone. "We're taking the jeep."

"So, what exactly is the plan?" From Bella's tone of voice, I didn't really want her to know. She was worried, and had every right to be.

Carlisle of course answered her. "Jasper and Alice, will go with you to Phoenix, and Emmett, Edward, and I are going to hunt James. Esme and Rosalie will distract the woman so you three can get out of the state safely, then they'll meet up with Charlie and keep an eye on the girls."

I was thankful that he gave her the short version.

We all glanced at Alice and Carlisle asked, "Alice, will they take the bait?"

I watched with Alice and we saw with relief that they would.

"The woman will follow Esme and Rosalie, while he'll track you." She told the others.

Carlisle sighed quietly and headed for the kitchen. "Let's go."

I grabbed Bella of the couch and kissed her, not caring that my family was watching. I didn't know how this was going to end and despite the fact I would fight and hope for the best outcome, I was scared to death.

When I released her, I focused solely on what we were going to do. Hopefully, we'd be able to catch James without too much trouble.

I followed after Carlisle and Emmett, vowing silently to make this separation as quick as possible.

We packed the jeep quickly. Carlisle grabbed one of the other tents and other items we'd need to bring if we were pretending Bella was with us. I grabbed Bella's jacket that she uses for school out of her car, she wouldn't need it and we could use it for her scent.

I checked to make sure that James and Victoria were in distance, grimacing when I found their minds. I didn't want them to be so close to Bella, but at least I knew where they were.

With a nod to Emmett, he took off out of the garage and down the driveway.

I waited until I was sure James was following us before I called Esme. "He's following?" I whispered when she answered.

It was longer to long afterwards when I called Alice to let her know the woman had followed after Esme and Rose.

This was not how I thought this evening would end.

Author's Note

I hope you guys liked this chapter.

Just a heads up next chapter is going to be interesting, and I'm not sure exactly how it is going to go. I'm going to do a section in either Rose or Esme's POV about what they go through with the girls and Charlie, and then section either in Carlisle, Emmett or Edward's POV. So depending next chapter might end up having 2 parts.

Let me know whose POV you would like me to do, or if you would like me to do a mixture.

Until next Chapter,
