Disclaimer: I do not, nor will I ever own Twilight. I have used some sentences directly from the book, I don't own them. There are just some descriptions and dialogue that I can't bear to change and or leave out. They were originally and forever owned by Stephenie Meyer.
I can't believe we are this close to being done with the Cullens' POV of Transitionals.
I really hope you all like this chapter, and I would like to dedicate it to all the people who have left reviews for any of the books in the series. This one is for you guys, and girls.
Chapter 22
Edward's POV
The flight back to Seattle was excruciating, but it was nothing compared to having to start over with our hunt for James. He and the woman, Victoria had left the area, and we couldn't find them, no matter how many times we went over their trails. Thankfully it was so early in the morning that we didn't have to worry about running into too many people as we followed the trails through the town.
It didn't make any sense. How could they get past us? And where could they have gone?
"They must have gone back the way they came, taking the same path and backtracked," Emmett suggested. Where could they have gone?
I could remember the many talks with Jasper on tactics. Backtracking over the same path one had already taken could throw off pursuit. It made it harder to track since we couldn't guess which route was the one they had taken last.
The obvious one would be the trail that would take James back to the airport. If he took another flight it would be harder to find where he had gone, though.
Surely he wouldn't have left until he knew where Bella was, but how could he have figured that out.
I was regretting letting Bella go back to Phoenix without me. I hadn't thought to question her why it was so important to go back there, when we were discussing what to do. A part of me knew then, that if she was certain she needed to go back, then that was where she needed to go. No matter how much I didn't want her to.
When we had met up with the other at Charlie's, he had explained the reason why she had needed to go to Phoenix. It didn't help relieve my concern but at least I knew she really had been needing to go back.
I slammed my hand through a tree, uprooting it instantly. I needed to find James before he tracked Bella back to Phoenix. My thoughts were turning violent because I had no idea whether or not he and the woman had already figured out our plans.
The phone rang, and I held my breath.
It didn't matter who called, it wouldn't be good news.
Emmett and I hurried to Carlisle's side.
"Carlisle, I know where James is heading."
Hope filled me for only a moment before Alice continued.
"I saw him in a house and drew the place out. Bella is certain that it's Toby's most secure safe house. She says less than twenty people know about it. Very few of the family knew about it though. You realize what that means right?"
We knew what that meant. One of the people Toby trusted told James about the house. It was most likely whoever had betrayed the family that night. Two betrayals like that, no it had to be the same person.
"Nothing has gone the way we wanted it too," Carlisle growled with exasperation.
"We managed to get Bella back to Phoenix like she said we need to, but besides that no, everything else hasn't worked out."
"We need to gather together. I'll get the tickets but I want all of us to be in Phoenix with the three of you." Carlisle ran a hand over his face before continuing. Have Bella call her dad, he should hear this from her."
Alice muttered an agreement and Carlisle hung up.
"So we're going to Phoenix?" Emmett asked to clarify.
Carlisle nodded. "I'm going to let Esme know to have them meet us at the airport."
"Carlisle?" Esme asked uncertainly.
"James is headed for Phoenix. Alice knows where he is heading and we have reason to believe he is working with the person who betrayed Bella's family."
I fought down the fury but could already see a red haze settling over my eyes.
Carlisle sensed my struggle and nodded for me to go on ahead.
I decided to run to the house. I could back a few bags and that would make our group less inconspicuous. Airlines nowadays were always looking for the odd passengers so anything I could do to make sure we weren't the ones stopped, would be best. It also gave me something to do.
So I packed up a few bags. Enough bags for a group our size that wouldn't be too much for us to lug around. I kept my mind solely on the task at hand so it wouldn't drift to James. I didn't want to think about him and risk my temper.
The very idea that he could already be closer to Bella than I was, was mind wrecking.
"Carlisle has the tickets bought."
I turned. I hadn't expected Rose to be the one to come get me. Honestly, I hadn't thought anything could get her to leave Anna's side.
To my surprise she actually opened her mind, reliving a memory for me. Rose was usually so careful with her memories. She usually tried her best to keep them from me, since she couldn't keep all of her thoughts of the time at the moment from me. She was better at hiding her thoughts than most of the family, but she couldn't keep everything from me.
Having her willingly show me something was a gift and I knew it.
The others had gathered at Bella's house, though it was only a brief time. Carlisle had already paid for the tickets and he and Emmett had gone back to help protect the little girls.
"Someone needs to get Edward," Esme voiced her concerns. She was worried about me and being on my own. She was most likely worried that James and Victoria hadn't left yet.
If only that had been true. I would have stopped James before he could get to Toby's safe house.
"I'll do it," Emmett offered. "The pixie has been keeping us updated with his decisions. Just in case."
Of course, Alice was keeping an eye on me. She knew me well enough to know that if my temper got the best of me, I would have run all the way to Phoenix to get James.
"No, Rose should go."
They all turned to Anna.
Anna had one hand firmly clutching to Esme's hand the other. He little mouth was curled in a determined pout. "Uncle Edward needs you more."
If I had been human, I was certain I would have stumbled. More than likely I would have dropped the bags in my hands.
My look of shock didn't have to be hidden like the others had tried to do when Anna had said what she had.
Anna had called me Uncle. She called Charlie Uncle, but he was one of her actual great Uncles.
Bella was her cousin, but she was raised to call her Auntie Bella.
I was Bella's mate, but it wasn't like we were married yet. Or engaged, but I had already been thinking about those things. I wanted Bella to be my wife. More than anything.
I had never thought about Bella's connection to the girls in the fact that they would both consider her their aunt, and what that would possibly imply for me, though.
I liked it. I liked the thought of Anna calling me Uncle Edward. I was touched that she thought of me like that. That I deserved an actual title in her family.
"I don't know why Anna thinks you need me over someone else, but I couldn't argue with that." Rose crossed her arms over her chest, barely meeting my eyes. "So what do you need?
I couldn't think of an answer. I didn't think I needed her help. I had bags packed, and I was ready to go. So I shrugged.
She huffed and grabbed a bag in each hand, heading to my car. She took the passenger seat without complaint, so after putting the other bags in the trunk I slid into the driver's seat.
"So," I began looking for something to talk about. Anna seemed so sure that I would need Rose's help."
Rose huffed before angling towards me. "I have no clue why Anna thinks you need me. Carlisle and Esme would be better choices. They would be able to handle your emotion turmoil, and Emmett could stop you if you were trying to go at it alone. So what she wants me to do, I don't know."
My hands tightened around the steering wheel, my mind flying over what Anna could have possibly thought I would need Rose's help with.
I had to think of just what Anna knew of Rose, and what she could do to help me.
"What are you thinking?"
Rose was within her rights to ask me what I was thinking, but my mind took in the words and I couldn't help flinching.
The only person I had ever had to ask that to was Bella. I thought about the pennies I carry around just so I can ask her for her thoughts.
Thinking about Bella released the gates I had tried to keep shut. She wasn't with me, she was miles away. I couldn't see her, but I knew she was in danger. I wasn't there to hold her, to protect her, not yet anyway. What could happen before I arrived though?
I couldn't think like that, but the panic was building up and it was powerful.
Jasper's with her. Jasper and Alice are both with her. Alice can give them enough of a warning, and Jasper is more than capable to protect Bella. He was good at putting plans together on the spot, and he had the training.
But what if that wasn't enough? Anything could happen.
Edward! Rose screamed in her head.
I flinched and the car swerved an inch out from the center of the lane.
"Everything will be fine. Just calm down."
I couldn't believe Rose's words. "You don't know that."
She scoffed. "Bella is with Jasper and Alice, and on top of that, she is at her cousin's house. She seems to believe that is a safe place for her to be, so you should believe it too."
"Anything could happen though."
"Yes," Rose agreed sharply. "There is a chance that something bad could happen, but Alice would see that and she and Jasper would take care of the problem until we all got there to help."
I glared over at her, though I knew I was more scared than angry. "What if that isn't enough?"
"Then Bella uses her physical shield. She's not exactly defenseless," Rose countered.
"But what if…"
"If ifs and buts were candies and nuts we'd all have a merry Christmas," Rose yelled before I could finish. She smirked when I couldn't find something to say to that.
My mind had gone back to the night Emmett and I had heard Anna yell that at Bella during one of the arguments we had heard them have. Back when Anna and Charlie had been trying to get Bella to talk to us. We had heard Anna say a few of those little sayings before. She apparently had a good amount memorized.
"Don't stop talking Edward, tell me just how worried you really are, and let me explain why you don't have to worry about it."
I was surprised when Rose placed her hand on my shoulder. She gave it a slight squeeze before pulling away. The brief contact spoke volume with her, though.
My eyes started to burn, and I fought back the surprise of tears. Not that I'd even be able to shed them. My mouth wouldn't work.
"If something happens before we get down there, Alice will change her." Rose sounded so sure, but it isn't easy to change a person. Bella smells better than a normal human, the thought of tasting her blood, I couldn't even imagine.
I didn't have faith that my sister could change Bella.
Then there was the worry that we could be causing Bella more trouble if she was to be changed before finishing the transition. I didn't know if it would affect her, but if there was a chance that it could, and it was a negative effect…
I shook away the thoughts.
Rose crossed her arms over her chest again. "Despite how against it, I was before, I know for a fact that Bella is going to be one of us no matter what. Even if Alice has to be the one to change her."
I sighed, knowing Rose was only trying to make me feel better. Truth be told it was helping. Slowly but surely it was helping. I felt better, just enough to mess with my sister.
I chose my words carefully. "But what if Alice can't change her?"
Rose's eyes closed slowly and I listened while she started counting back from ten. Once she got to zero she opened her eyes and turned to glare at me. "If Alice can't change her, Jasper will. He'll pump himself full of confidence and change her, end of story."
I smiled, knowing Jasper would have loved to hear Rose's confidence in him.
The rest of the ride was spent in silence. I couldn't help thinking about Jasper's and my control. I was constantly aware of the burning in my throat whenever I could smell Bella real scent. Some days were harder than others, particularly when I was needing to hunt, but I was handling it pretty well. I hadn't picked up anything from Jasper, suggesting that he was struggling, and I hadn't in a while. He definitely didn't seem to be struggling.
Perhaps confidence in himself was really all he needed; that and the opportunity to prove it to himself.
I parked my car in the long-term parking, unsure of just how long we'd be gone.
We grabbed the bags and found the others quickly. After passing out bags we made our way to security.
Charlie caught hold of my shoulder. "I called Grandpa Ray, he's making his way down there too."
It comforted me to know that someone else was coming to help protect Bella. I nodded my thanks to Charlie.
Once we had made it through security and found our gate, the waiting game started again. It wasn't nearly as long of a wait as it felt like but any amount of time doing nothing was hard on me.
That was probably why Esme handed me, Cissy.
Cissy woke not long after being passed to me, and she seemed quite content to remain laying in my arms. She babbled and blew spit bubbles, much to Rose's annoyance and Emmett's delight.
Anna curled into my side, and my mind went back to Rose's memory of when Anna had called me Uncle. I felt the corners of my mouth stretch as I smiled.
Carlisle's POV
Finally, we were allowed to board the plane.
I called Alice, who as always was quick to answer. "We're boarding the plane now, we'll be there soon."
"We'll see you when you get here."
I closed the phone and handed my ticket over to be checked.
As our group walked down the ramp to the plane, Anna's small hand grasped mine. I smiled and let her lead the way on board.
She smiled at everyone as we passed and I only stopped her when we had found our seats. Since the tickets were purchased last minute I wasn't able to get our seats together in one group. Thankfully I had managed to get us all on one plane. Unfortunately, there was only one pair of seats together. I had Anna take one of the two seats, while I helped Charlie with the bags and the rest of our group took their seats.
Edward took the aisle seat diagonally in front of Anna, letting her be able to see her sister. Rose and Emmett had taken the two farthest seats away from the group. Charlie was behind Anna by three rows, and while I had initially planned to let Esme sit by Anna, she had already taken her seat in front of Edward.
I sat by Anna, and she reached for my hand again. She never once let go of my hand during the flight.
Her hand remained in mine until she was put in her car seat we were renting.
Esme and I rode with Charlie and Edward, while Rose and Emmett were in the car behind us with the girls.
As Charlie directed Edward to Toby's house, I turned our phone back on. There weren't any calls but Alice had sent quite a few messages.
My eyes narrowed as I read them one after another.
"Someone from the Undermining called Bella."
The car started accelerating as Edward growled.
Charlie turned in his seat to see me. "What happened?"
"According to Alice's message they tried to make Bella believe Toby was alive, but Bella seemed pretty sure they were trying to trick her."
Charlie nodded thoughtfully. "If anyone could tell if it was him or not, it would be Bella."
"We need to come up with a plan." Edward managed to say through his anger.
Charlie spoke up before any of us could. "Despite what you all might think, we're going to need Anna's help. Her powers are going to be beneficial to any plan we consider.
"She's three," I heard Rose hiss from the car behind us.
I knew none of us wanted her or Cissy anywhere near trouble, but this problem wasn't just a vampire. We were dealing with the Other World and Charlie knew more about it than any of us. We needed to trust in his knowledge and his care.
I didn't like it, but if he was certain we needed Anna's help, then who was I to argue.
Charlie sighed. "That does leave us with a problem. Anna can't be away from Cissy."
"Her post-traumatic stress disorder doesn't allow it." I finished for him.
Surprisingly though Charlie shook his head. "Anna may have some difficulty with dealing with that night, but she handles it well, and I don't know a doctor who would ever diagnose Anna with PTSD."
"I saw the doctor's note that Bella has for her," Edward told him.
Charlie smirked. "I told you the reason why Anna was going to school with Bella. It's magic, that note doesn't mean anything."
"So Anna could be away from Bella and Cissy without having her panic attacks."
Charlie nodded and shrugged at the same time. "It's true that Anna does panic when she's away from them. She does show other symptoms, but the real reason she stays with the both of them is protection."
I nodded then. "So it would be alright for Cissy to stay behind with someone while the rest…"
"No," Charlie interrupted me. "I don't know everything, but Anna says she was told by her dad, to stay with Cissy. In times of danger, she is supposed to be with Cissy, the two of them together, and where Anna can keep her eyes on Cissy."
He shook his head. "Anna isn't going to disobey her dad. If we try to leave Cissy, Anna will have to choose between, doing what she was told by her dad, and her duty."
"Her duty?" Esme asked.
Charlie's eyes narrowed slightly with concern. "Didn't Bella explain how her ring works? How Anna's powers are the only one that can get past her shields when she wears it."
"She did explain that," I reassured him. "So Bella was serious that Anna is her guard."
"Completely serious." Charlie faced forward. "I know it's a lot to take in, and it seems ridiculous, someone so young, with that much responsibility, but this is quite normal for our kind. The maturity of our kind is nothing like normal humans."
Esme leaned forward. "What about Cissy? It can't be normal, or good for us to take her along when it could be so dangerous."
Charlie glanced back with a grimace. "You'd be surprised, Esme, this war makes you rethink the best way to protect and defend. If we're lucky Cissy will just sleep through it all."
Author's Note
Well, things are getting excited. I know I'm looking forward to next week's update where we get to see the fight with James and the Undermining through the Cullen's POV
Normal this is where I would ask you whose POV you would like to have the next chapter be in, since it is such an important chapter, and I love having your opinions. But the coming chapter is going to be from Edward's POV. There is so much that is going to be going on, and the best way to hear everything is being able to read minds. So Edward's POV it will be.
What did you think of this chapter? Did you like my attempts to distract Edward?
What about Anna and Carlisle's brief moments? How enjoyed that.
Speaking of Anna, what are your thoughts about "Uncle Edward" did any of you see that coming? And why haven't we heard her call him that any other time after, during Bella's POV of the stories?
Last question, who still finds it funny that a three-year-old is Bella's bodyguard?
