Disclaimer: I do not, nor will I ever own Twilight. I have used some sentences directly from the book, I don't own them. I will be using the talk with James from the book, most of it at least. There are just some descriptions and dialogue that I can't bear to change and or leave out. They were originally and forever owned by Stephenie Meyer.
First of all, I find it strangely fitting that this chapter lands on 50. That may seem odd, and I know that Bella's POV only had 25 chapters, and that I've already broken two chapters into two parts so that's why we are already at chapter 50, but it seems fitting to have the big fight scene in Edward's POV on the 50th chapter.
So I'm starting this chapter off being really amused. I hope you all like what is going on in the background, as much as I did.
This chapter is dedicated to the real owner of Twilight, Stephenie Meyer.
Chapter 23
Edward's POV
Just to be frank, despite the fact that I was worried sick about the love of my existence, the woman that made living worthwhile, some part of my brain could still comprehend surprises. While I had thought I was solely focused on Bella's protection, I realized I had just enough curiosity in me to not only be caught off guard, but also to be surprised.
Charlie gave me the thirteen digit code to get us into the house and I pulled up beside Carlisle's Mercedes. Emmett parked on the other side of it. He and Rose grabbed the girls and we hurried to the front door.
The first surprise was when Charlie pulled out what appeared to be a credit card instead of a key.
Placing a corner of the card into the lock caused the item to morph into a key. Words were failing all of us as Charlie let our group in and pulled the key back out.
He shut the door, and as he was locking it back up the key turned back into the card.
"Alright, Anna, how do we get to the so called basement?" Charlie asked her.
We all turned to Rose who had Anna firmly in her arms.
Anna pointed down a hallway. Rose followed her directions, and we soon found ourselves in a quaint, and yet large living room.
Charlie pointed to the rug and Anna nodded.
"Seriously," Emmett complained when Charlie pulled back the rug, revealing a trap door. "This is a cliché if I have ever seen one."
Anna smirked at him and from her thoughts I saw what I assumed was the basement. It was nice. A descent size and Emmett was going to love it.
We climbed down and I focused my mind on Bella, trying to ignore all the curious thoughts my family was thinking.
"No one is down here," Esme glanced around the room worriedly.
We all turned to Anna, only to see her pulling a string. "To put the rug back," she said.
She then squirmed out of Rose's arms and moved to one of the four walls. Charlie moved to her side, and we all watched in astonishment as they pushed the wall aside.
The basement was amazing. One long wall was filled with screens, and the opposite one held controllers. Four couches were placed around a coffee table. There was a safe that was open currently, and the items in side looked intrigued. There even seemed to be a bedroom of this main room.
Bella, Jasper and Alice must have been hiding down here the entire time.
"What do you all think?" I heard Bella ask.
I turned to her, smiling slightly, seeing Anna in her arms both happy and upset was hard to handle. Thankfully the little girl seemed happier to be with Bella, than upset over the situation.
"It's beautiful." The raw emotion in Emmett's voice made me turn to him.
I shook my head as he wiped away a fake tear. Always dramatic.
We all sat down around the couches. Carlisle, Esme and Charlie sat on one of the larger two. Rose joined Alice and Jasper on the other one, while Emmett took a seat on one of the smaller couches.
Bella and I took a seat on the last couch, but my anxiety was finally starting fray. I pulled her up onto my lap.
"Is this okay?" I asked. "I know I can't do anything rash, while holding you."
Thankfully Bella didn't seem to mind. She offered me a smile before resting her head against my shoulder.
Finally, let's get started. Jasper.
"Why's my book out?" Anna's question caught Jasper of guard.
She had gotten down as soon as Bella had taken a seat. She was sitting with her legs under the coffee table pointing to a scrapbook.
Alice's thoughts filled with amusement, and she immediately started singing on country songs in her head.
She got off the couch and knelt beside Anna. "I found it, I hope you don't mind that I looked through it."
Anna shook her head and started flipping through the book. Did they find her already? She stopped at a page filled with names on it. It looked like it was supposed to be her family tree. She pointed to a name turning to Alice. "So you found Auntie in it?"
She knew! Alice.
That explains it. Jasper.
I didn't understand either of their joyful thoughts but I didn't really get a chance to think about.
"You knew, this whole time?" Bella gasped.
Anna smiled brightly at Bella, a grin like no other I had ever seen on her face. She got up swiftly and climbed onto Rose's lap, flinging her arms around Rose's neck, giggling all the while. "I knew, first day I saw her."
There was a slight roar in my head as questions filtered from one mind to mine, but my focus was on Anna and her thoughts. Images of her and her mom flickered in and out but I was seeing them in a new light. Anna's thoughts now had created a new filter giving the images new meaning.
"What's going on?" I heard Rose ask, and I pulled myself from Anna's mind.
I watched with a new budding happiness as Alice showed Rose Anna's family tree.
It took a moment, but Rose finally found the name Alice wanted her to find.
This can't be happening; but it is.
For the second time in a day I found myself in Rose's memories. She was walking down the hall back at Forks' high school, heading to her second period class. For a fraction of a second she had caught a glimpse of a baby carrier. She paused and saw Bella trying to navigate the hallway. Then her eyes met Anna's, and the little girl grinned at her.
I watched as that grin was now forming on Rose's face. She grabbed Anna from the floor and kissed her cheek, before-much to our surprise-Rose actually squealed.
Emmett's patience ran out then. "What is it Rosie?"
Rose's happiness couldn't be contained. "Anna's my niece, Emmett, you're an uncle."
The room fell silent for a moment, as we all took in this moment.
Emmett snatched Anna from Rose giving her a kiss too, making her giggle.
She leaned into his embrace. "Uncle Emmett."
Emmett stilled, his mind trying to form anything, to thank her for this gift. Finally he managed to say, "I like the sound of that."
Once everyone was sitting down again, Anna turned to Jasper from her spot on Emmett's lap. "What's the plan Jasper?"
Jasper couldn't help the smile after feeling her excitement. Anna was so happy for Rose and Emmett to know that they were her aunt and Uncle that it seemed not even our current situation could dampen her spirit.
"We've decided that the best way to handle this is to let them think that they have the upper hand." He sensed my concern and hurried to explain. "Since we know they don't really have Toby, it won't be a problem for us to go with Bella."
As long as Bella is right? Should we really risk it? Rose.
Charlie seemed certain that Bella would know whether or not it was really Toby, but… Emmett's concern for the girls' happiness was following the same path as Rose's. They hadn't questioned Bella's certainty until after finding out their connection to the girls. They both now found it harder to chance even if it is a slim chance that Toby really is alive. Neither of them were willing to bring it up though, so I wasn't going to. If Bella was certain that it wasn't Toby, then I certainly trust her judgment.
"Once inside, Bella will go to the meeting on her own, but we will be close enough that we'll be able to get to her in seconds." Jasper turned to me but I couldn't stop my complaint.
"James can hurt her in those few seconds before we arrive though," I growled.
"My physical shield can stop him long enough for you to get there though. I'll be fine." Bella attempted to comfort me, but it wasn't working.
I met her eyes, needing her to agree with me. "And what about the Undermining?"
Bella turned to Alice then. "Can you show him that our plan will work?"
She clearly still hadn't grasped Alice's powers.
Alice gave her an apologetic smile while her thoughts screamed at me to listen to them. "Sorry, I can't see anything about the plan, when he's so dead against using it."
Bella turned back and glared at me.
"I can't lose you." I tried my best to keep the desperation out of my voice.
I knew that this was going to be difficult. When Bella had told us her story, when we had learned just how much trouble she was dealing with I knew… I knew what I was getting myself into. I knew it was going to be hard, and that I was going to have to deal with all of this worry, anxiety and fear.
More importantly though I knew, that I couldn't just rely on my ways to protect Bella. There were going to be obstacles that I wouldn't be able to plan for, I would be inexperienced and somebody else would have to take point.
Jasper continued with the plan but he refused to meet my gaze. "There isn't much structure to the plan, just a basic idea. We follow after Bella and when they let their guard down, thinking it's just her, we attack. We need to wait for the right moment though."
Edward's not going to like that. Esme called out to me with her thoughts. Everything will be alright Edward. We'll make sure of it.
I nodded, letting her know that I had heard her.
"We're going to need your powers, can you handle that?" Jasper asked Anna.
Anna gave a stiff nod. I can do that. I can help this time.
I didn't like where her thoughts were going, comparing this evening with the night the lost their family. It only added to my growing nerves. I didn't want to think what would happen if I lost Bella.
"Can you project your shield to cover the rest of us?" Jasper asked Charlie hopefully. His mind went back to the knowledge that the Undermining could take over a person's mind. We didn't need them attempting to take over ours.
Charlie's reply did nothing to reassure me. "I will do my best. My shield isn't as strong as Bella's, the transition makes hers stronger. I can't promise how long I can keep it up, or how many I can protect."
"That's all we can ask for," Carlisle said. His thoughts went out to me. You need to relax. Fearing the worse isn't going to help you.
I took a deep breath attempting to calm myself as Jasper let Bella continue with the next part of the plans.
Bella took some hand drawn floor plans from Alice and spread them out for us to see.
"Whoever told them about this safe house, most likely also told them about Toby's study." She pointed to the room in the center of the page. "The room would be the obvious place for them to want to meet me in. What they don't know, is that there are a total of four ways to get into this room.
Four, it only shows a set of double doors. Rose.
Given everything that we have been told about Toby, it makes sense that he set up other entrances or rather exits from that room. Carlisle.
"Only Toby and the family members he told about this house, know the other three ways into the room. As far as anyone else knows, you can only enter through the door." Bella pointed to the double doors before pointing out every other entrance.
"Two of them are behind a bookcase."
Man this house is awesome. Emmett.
"The final one is a trap door in the floor. In fact, the tunnel under that room, connects to this house."
Toby was very careful with all his planning. Esme.
Jasper took over explaining, now that we had the lay of the land. "Esme, Charlie, and Alice, will stay with the girls under the floor. That way Alice and Anna can use their powers to predict what will happen and let us know of any changes that need to be made to the plan." Jasper turned to Bella's dad. "Charlie, can your powers work through the floor?"
"That's something I can deal with." Charlie nodded, though from his half concealed thoughts I knew he wasn't one hundred percent certain.
Jasper felt his uncertainty but decided to ignore it, instead he turned to Esme. "That leaves you to care for Cissy. We can't separate Cissy from Anna, so Cissy will have to be there."
After the talk with Charlie, Esme knew this of course. She still didn't like the idea of Cissy being there, but she wasn't going to make Anna choose. "I can handle Cissy. She won't be a problem."
Jasper tried to block his mind thinking about Cissy, then. If he was hiding his thoughts now, I knew I wasn't going to like it. He pointed to one of the other entry point into the room. "It will be harder to get out of this door. Edward, Carlisle, and Rosalie, will wait behind that door." His thoughts repeated the instructions to me sharply. "When the time is right, Edward will go to Bella and Carlisle will back him up."
I knew he was thinking about what would be best, and logically it was better for me to be behind that door, but I couldn't help thinking Jasper was trying to keep me out the fight.
I fought back those thoughts as he turned to Rose then to Emmett. "You'll back up Emmett and me. The two of us will be behind this door."
Alice took over then. "If Bella's right, and only the people on the phone and James, will meet her in the room, then we only have to deal with two other worlders, and one vampire."
Piece of cake. Emmett thought excited.
Could it really be that easy? Rose.
As long as we're careful, I have no reason to believe we can't handle this. Carlisle.
It's a good plan, Edward. Esme tried to silently reassure me and I nodded again.
It was a good plan.
"When we leave we would run into more members of the Undermining." Alice switched the floor plans to a map of what had to be the tunnels. "This is the path you need to take to get to the safe house."
Esme and Charlie studied the map before nodding.
Alice then showed the rest of us how to find the hidden doors we'd be hiding behind.
After a much reluctant goodbye I watched as Bella drove off.
"Let's go." I growled as soon as I got back to the basement.
Charlie caught hold of my arm before Carlisle could. "Listen, it won't take an hour to get to the house, for any of you. And we don't want to arrive before Bella does. Sitting there waiting for her to show up, is only going to get us caught."
I shook my head. That didn't make any sense any way.
"He's right," Jasper said, sensing my doubt. "If you sit there waiting for Bella, you're just going to drive yourself crazy with worry and you could jeopardize the plan. You know very well you won't be able to stand there when there are people in that house waiting for Bella."
Carlisle eyed me carefully. "Edward we need to wait out the right amount of time."
I turned away from them, my gaze landing on Anna. She offered me a quick smile that faded away instantly. I don't like it either, but they are right. She went to Rose and curled up in her arms to wait.
Sighing, I took a seat; dreading ever single minute.
Traveling through the tunnels wasn't like anything I had expected. First of all, I was wondering who would carry Charlie so that he was with us at all times. No one had to though. He used one of the many tools in Toby's safe and was now running beside us. Easily keeping up with the equipment he had.
Anna had laughed when he put on the bulky goggles that would allow him to see. And the strangeness caught Carlisle's curiosity.
"Would Bella be able to use that to help, when her speed comes in?" He asked, eager for the answer. His thoughts were focused on different ways that we could help make Bella's transition safer for her.
Charlie shook his head slightly, needing to keep his gaze in front of him. "This wouldn't do anything to help Bella. When her speed does come in, her vision is affected by the mind, and what it believes she should be able to see. Even with the goggles on, the vision would blur and she'd have a worse headache."
Strike that idea.
Emmett happily continued questioning Charlie about the gear. His questions ranging from how long a person could wear it to whether or not a vampire could.
Charlie had been quick to advise Emmett not to try. As for the question about how long it could be worn, that depended on the one wearing it. Some could last longer than others.
Thankfully he didn't seem to have any trouble with it.
As we got closer to the house, Anna started getting the danger readings. She tightened her hold on Rose, who then held her closer to herself.
"We're almost there," I mumbled to myself. By the end of the night hopefully we'd be able to get back to Forks, and relatively calmer lives. Hopefully after this we would be able to have a little bit of peace.
We slipped out of the tunnels into the crawl space under the safe house. From here on out we'd have to move slower, what with how much space we had.
"You have got to be kidding me," Alice hissed a moment later. She stopped in her tracks, turning so she was facing me. "She put on her ring. How am I supposed to check the future if she has her ring on?"
Jasper shushed her gently. "It'll be okay, she must have had a good reason to put it on."
"Just look for someone else besides Auntie," Anna reminded her.
Alice huffed. She muttered about inconveniences all the way to where we would have to split up. She, Charlie, and Esme with the girls continued straight while Rose, Carlisle, and I went to the right. Jasper and Emmett headed to the left.
Alice and her group were settled under the floor of the room, by the time the rest of us got in place behinds the two doors.
I let my mind open, searching for everyone's thoughts.
Jasper and Emmett were waiting patiently, Jasper kept a hand on Emmett's shoulder to help cool off his excitement. Emmett was more than ready for this fight.
I checked on Esme's thoughts, getting a view of the girls. She had Cissy tightly in her arms. The little one was still sound asleep. I doubted she'd sleep much longer. There was potential for this fight to get very loud.
Anna had her arms around Charlie's neck, the amount of danger in the area did not bode well.
Charlie was already working on flexing his shield. I was really surprised at how hard it was for him to spread it.
Here we go, Rose's thought brought me back. She and Carlisle had noticed the soft sound of the door.
We braced ourselves against the wall. Being inside the actual walls that were surrounding the room, left very little room for us. I was right in front of the door, with Carlisle to my right, and Rose to my left.
I listened for the person who was in the room, and since I couldn't get anything from them, I was certain it was Bella.
Not far behind her though I caught James' thoughts. He stepped into the office behind her, slamming the door behind him, just to scare her.
I fought back a growl as his plan worked.
Through his thoughts I watched as Bella jumped then spun around to face him.
"Sorry about this Bella, I'm just following orders." He wasn't sorry, but he was good at controlling his voice. His thoughts were spinning through many of his vile hunts and yet he kept his voice soft.
Carlisle rested a hand on my shoulder, his thoughts were comforting.
We listened, and I watched through James' thoughts as Bella continued with the plan.
"Where's Toby?"
James replied casually. "If we get what we want he will be delivered safely to his daughters."
Such a meeting wouldn't even be possible. Charlie grumbled silently. They would just dump him somewhere if they had him. They couldn't get him to his Daughters.
He is lying. Anna.
Yeah right, Rose.
Even if he were alive, it wouldn't be that simple. Emmett.
First hurdle over with. Jasper.
So far so good. Alice.
Do they really believe that anyone would agree to those standards? Esme.
We need to be ready, this is where everything can change. Carlisle reminded me.
I nodded, my mind focused on James and Bella.
I didn't like his interest in Bella. His thirst was evident in his mind and he was barely concealing it.
When he started walking towards her I had to stifle a hiss.
"I will give your world this, the people can be quite interesting. Hunting your kind has been far more exciting than any of the other prey I've hunted. The Undermining does make it worth my while." A rush of memories of other hunts filled his mind as he spoke.
Calm, Carlisle called to me.
I knew he was struggling with the same concerns as I was, but he couldn't see into James thoughts. He couldn't see Bella's attempts to hide her own fears.
I wanted to tell to stay still, to not move back anymore. Any wrong move could set of the hunter within him. This was agonizing.
James though ignored her retreating steps with a patience I didn't think he had. He just continued with his disgusting story.
"When the Undermining first found me, I didn't want anything to do with them. I don't work for anyone." He grinned then, flashing his lethal teeth at Bella. "But then they made the deal too sweet to pass up. I have been hunting transitional creatures, and the members of your precious Rebellion for almost a year now. And it's been exhilarating."
He's trying to add to her fear, Jasper warned me. Not that I needed it. I could see it all in James' head. He liked terrorizing his prey. It was just another part of his game.
"When I was asked to track down a transitional who had gotten away, I eagerly agreed to the challenge. The Undermining can't find you in the state your father lives in, but I'm not from the other world. The spells hiding you from them couldn't protect you from me. Sadly this little game was too easy. The Undermining was able to give me your scent, it didn't take me long to find you."
No he's just gloating. Emmett.
"I had hoped that this little game would be made a little harder with you mind reader mate. It was easy enough to slip away from him and the others. And clearly they're not qualified to protect you, if you were able to get away from them."
That stung, no matter how hard I tried to ignore it. I saw it all. He had played us all as fools. He followed after us, until we were far enough away in his mind, and then waited until we were settled to wait for him, before leaving. All that time wasted, only for him to distract us.
"The Undermining made sure I had all the information I could possibly need. They let me know that I would have to guard my thoughts. The information was welcomed, If I hadn't have known to watch what I was thinking your mate might have ruined all my fun."
Fun?! Rose.
All of this was just a game to him and he was thrilled with it. He can't continue. Esme.
The Undermining worked fast to get our information, but how exactly did they get it? Carlisle.
Charlie's thoughts answered Carlisle's though. They must have gotten their information, while they were in Chicago.
He's distracting us with this story to let the Undermining get closer. I can sense them. Jasper.
This is getting too much for Anna, Alice warned.
I checked on Anna quickly. She had her head against Charlie's chest and her eyes closed tight. Her thoughts were a mess of what she was feeling.
This guy needs to be stopped. Emmett.
I couldn't agree more, especially after seeing Bella's face pale as James' sneered at her. Carlisle and Rose caught a hold of me.
Not yet. We need to wait until the Undermining join them.
James laughed smugly in his mind and continued. "You see when Victoria and I found you in the clearing, I wasn't expecting to see the only prey who had ever escaped me."
What was this?
I was seeing us in the clearing from James' view point, and his thoughts were fixated on Alice, not Bella, like his job suggested.
James laughed. "I know, I don't let anyone get away. It happened though once, oh, ages ago. The one and only time my prey escaped me."
I didn't like where this was going.
"You see, the vampire who was so stupidly fond of this little victim made the choice to save her. When the old one knew I was after his little friend, he stole her from the asylum where he worked - I never will understand the obsession some vampires seem to form with their natural prey - and as soon as he freed her he made her safe. She didn't even seem to notice the pain, poor little creature. She'd been stuck in that black hole of a cell for so long. A hundred years earlier and she would have been burned at the stake for her visions. In the nineteen-twenties it was the asylum and the shock treatments. When she opened her eyes, strong with her fresh youth, it was like she'd never seen the sun before. The old vampire made her a strong new vampire, and there was no reason for me to touch her then." He sighed. "I destroyed the old one in vengeance."
In the time it took for Bella to say Alice's name, the seven of us and Charlie had already put all the pieces together.
My mind went to Alice first, checking to see how she was handling this news. She had no memories of her human life, and to hear it from someone like James' was cruel.
She had no words to describe what was going on. She had wanted to know for so long.
That explains why she was left alone. He took her Sire from her, left her to fend for herself. Carlisle's anger flared, but he remained where he was.
Oh sweet Alice. Esme.
James' is making it all too easy for me to tear him to shreds. Emmett.
James will be ash before the day is out. Rose.
He'll pay! Jasper.
If she had powers as a human, she had to have come from the Other world. Charlie.
I was caught off guard by Charlie's surprising thought. Alice was a part of the Other world? If that was true why was she in an asylum?
"Yes, your little friend," James gloated. "I was surprised to see her in the clearing. But it made my job more fun, more exciting. So I guess your friends and your family ought to be able to derive some comfort from this experience. The Undermining can have you, and I won't go after her. The one victim who escaped me, quite an honor, actually."
That was not going to happen.
"And she did smell so delicious. I still regret that I never got to taste… She smelled even better than you do. Sorry- I don't mean to be offensive. You have a very nice smell. Floral, somehow…"
A transitional. Charlie turned to Alice, startling her, while his thoughts startled me. Alice was a transitional? Now nothing was making sense. It couldn't be right. From everything we had been told, the Undermining would have found her and destroyed her, not left her to that type of institution.
My thoughts were interrupted when James dared to touch Bella. Carlisle and Rose grabbed my arms and forced me to still.
I fought back the murderous growls as I watched Bella's face as James stroked her cheek with his thumb; his fingers resting over the carotid arteries. He was going to lose that hand first.
"What do they want with you?" He finally asked.
"That's for us to know." A man's voice joined them, and someone walked into the room.
"Just curious." James turned around and I was able to see the man.
Finally, we could… my train of thought stopped at the man's next words.
"Why don't you join us Duke?"
No, I don't believe it. Charlie.
Anna was just as certain as Charlie was.
But Duke walked into the room, calm and collected. Nothing like the playful man we had met when he took us to Chicago.
"Bella."
When the others heard his voice, I struggled with their angered thoughts.
That explains how they found out so much about us. Carlisle.
How could you betray his friends? Esme.
He's mine. Rose.
He's going to regret hurting my baby sis. Emmett.
We know who the traitor is now. Jasper.
We get James and the traitor in one night, what luck. Alice.
"How could you?"
The pain in Bella's voice stabbed through me. But Duke's callous words filled me with a blinding rage. He didn't care at all about what he had done.
"It wasn't too difficult, it's quite easy to change your mind. Go on give it a try."
"What about Amanda?" We all flinched at Bella's words.
Who could be that heartless?
"I'm terribly sorry to interrupt this moment, but I have other business that I need to attend to." The man from the Undermining, spared Duke a glance before turning all his attention to Bella. "You said you know what we want, so you have two choices Miss Swan. Join or die. We are willing to trade your cousin for you."
Liar! Anna yelled in her thoughts. Don't trust him.
"How do I know I can trust you?"
He laughed. "Trust, it's a funny thing. Not many people want anything to do with trust. It's meaningless to them." It doesn't matter if she trusts us, she'll die this night either way. "I suppose you can't trust us."
I took out the door, in my rage to get to the man. He wouldn't lay a hand on Bella, but he was going to lose his life for threatening her.
James jumped between the man and me, and we crashed to the ground. I heard the others enter but my focus was the vampire in front of me. He had done enough violence in his life and it was finally going to end.
So intent on our fight, I didn't notice when Jasper joined. I didn't notice when the thoughts around me vanished, and I certainly didn't notice the two other fights beside us. I could care less how the member of the Undermining and Duke was fairing against my family. They were outnumbered at the time being.
Together, Jasper and I was able to tear James apart. He wouldn't be hunting anymore people.
The trap door opened and Charlie led the way out of the crawl space. His thoughts showed me everything. We wouldn't be able to go back out the tunnel, it was closed off by the Undermining.
I turned to the others, getting the opportunity to see Emmett knock the unnamed man unconscious. All there was left was the traitor.
"Give up Duke." Bella glared at him furiously.
Time to flee, Duke thought before smirking back at Bella. "We always knew you wouldn't come willingly Bella. We also know you won't join us. That's why we're getting rid of you."
I growled but the noise was caught off by an explosion.
The house shook, knocking Anna of her feet, and almost tumbling Bella and Charlie.
"Good luck getting out!" Duke yelled. With surprising strength he managed to shove Rosalie away. He grabbed a silver ball from his pocket, and placed a hand on the unconscious man. The vanished instantly.
"That is so not fair," Emmett complained.
Another explosion, and this one was closer.
"We need to get out of here, they rigged the house to explode." I had managed to get enough of Duke's thoughts before he left to hear their plans. They were planning to level the house with us in it.
I lit James' before he could put himself back together.
Bella headed for the tunnel but I stopped her, pulling her up into my arms.
"They knew about the tunnel, they had someone block it off once we were all set up outside the room. We need another way out."
Bella shared a glance with Anna who nodded and ran to Rose.
Rose picked her up quickly. "What's going on?"
"Anna's going to lead the way out," Bella explained.
"Does Anna know the way out?" Emmett asked what we all wanted to. Each of us hoping she did when another explosion went off.
Bella shook her head. "Anna's never been here, but her powers can get us out of here."
Rose hurried out the door then, we all followed after. Carlisle and Emmett stuck close to Charlie in case he struggled to keep up.
I did not like how this had turned out. The house was in flames and was falling down around us. I only managed a brief moment to be glad that Bella was wearing her ring, making it easier on her to protect all of us with her shield. It was only because of her shields that the flames couldn't touch us.
We needed to get out of the house now, but each turn was leading us farther into the house, and more often than not to dead ends.
"Down!" Alice yelled suddenly.
I used my body to protect Bella's, anything I could do to help her keep her shield around all of us.
Wood, smoke and flames slammed into the shield, but it remained up.
"That was too close."
Emmett was right, and we needed to make sure nothing like that happened again. We needed a way out now.
We continued through the house but Anna's instructions were slowing and she was having a harder time with her powers.
"Where do we go Anna?" Rose asked worriedly. When Anna didn't answer she shook her trying to be gentle.
Bella tried then. "Anna?"
I dived into Anna's thoughts then growled. "This is too much like that night?"
Anna was lost in the memories of before and too scared to go on.
There was only one thing left to do. "Alice, start making decisions, and get us out of here."
Alice closed her eyes so she could focus better, and Jasper picked her up. Using Alice's visions, I led us through the house.
We were lucky that there hadn't been another explosion in a while, but I didn't doubt that there would be another one. There would be more until all that was left of the house was dust.
"How long can you keep your shield around us?" I asked when Alice's visions started slowing down. She was struggling to find a safe way out. It wasn't fair of me to ask her, but she answered anyway.
"I don't know."
I had expected as much.
Alice's visions of different paths changed, as flames shot through her mind. There wasn't any time to move.
The floor rumbled as another explosion went off. We were too close and a second later the flames ripped through the wall beside us.
The force of the blast hit Bella's shield the effects of it knocked the air out of her, and my feet from out from under me. I tightened my grip on Bella as we hit the floor, my eyes locking on hers with terror.
She blacked out instantly.
Author's Note
Alright everyone, just like Bella's POV for that chapter, we end with the worse kind of Cliffhanger. But, also like the chapter from Bella's POV I just can't make you wait an entire week to find out what happens. Especially since next chapter is going to be completely new information.
You will get to read everything that happened while Bella is unconscious. You'll read about how they find out about Cissy's powers and most importantly, how they get out of the wreckage.
This Awesome new chapter will be out to you all by no later than Tuesday Night. I will do whatever I can to get it to you by Monday, but I simply can't promise to have it to you by Sunday evening. I wish I could but I can't. I no doubt will try to attempt it but it's definitely a 90% certain impossible task.
With that being said, I hope you guys liked this chapter from Edward's POV. Let me know if you thought it was missing something. And don't forget if you want to see any of this chapter as an outtake from one of the other POV's (Like Alice's) Just let me know and those will be added at the end of the book.
I have one quick question for all of you before needing to let you go. Where do you think the impostor is?
Until next time,
