Transitionals

Disclaimer: I do not, nor will I ever own Twilight. I have used some sentences directly from the book, I don't own them. There are just some descriptions and dialogue that I can't bear to change and or leave out. They were originally and forever owned by Stephenie Meyer.

We are so close to the end of Transitionals and I just can't believe it. Including this chapter, there is only three left. After that there will be a few outtakes, but we are that close to the end of the Twilight section of Transitionals.

I'm really excited for this chapter and I hope you all like it.

This chapter is dedicated to all the people who have supported this story in anyway. We wouldn't be here without all of you.

Now, cue overreactions.

Chapter 24

Edward's POV

We were dead. The last blast had buried us, it had shattered Bella's shield and we had all been killed, either by the flames or by being buried alive and suffocating. Given the excessive heat I felt around me, I had been right about my soul, and where I would end up.

Enough with the despair, I surprisingly heard Jasper yell at me in his thoughts.

I hadn't thought that my power would follow me after death. That was going to make the rest of eternity unbearable; having to all the thoughts of the pain and despair.

Jasper's thoughts though made me realize he still had his power too. Having his power now seemed far worse than mine.

We're not dead, yet, He growled back at me. Now open your eyes and try to be helpful.

Not dead? That didn't make sense, the last explosion should have blown the seven of us apart, burying Bella and her family in the debris.

I opened my eyes. Sure enough, still alive. As my mind started taking in our surrounding though, I knew Jasper had been right about the 'Yet.' We needed to dig ourselves out from under the rubble quickly, especially for Bella and the others who needed to breathe.

Then my vampire brain caught up to the big question. How was Bella's shield still up? I glanced down at her in my arms, making sure she really was unconscious or if I had been wrong about that too.

No, she was out cold. Which meant her shield shouldn't be up. There was no way her shield would still be up with her unconscious. It was impossible.

"Bella, how long can you keep this up?" Charlie asked somewhere behind me.

I shifted, despite the limited space we were restricted to, thanks to the shield. "I don't know what's going on Charlie, but the blast knocked Bella out."

Every set of eyes turned to me.

"That's physically impossible," Charlie said what he and my family were thinking. His eyes dropped to Bella, and the concern was evident in his gaze. "It's impossible."

"I know this doesn't make any sense," Carlisle began. He did his best to hide his worry. "We don't know how long the shield will stay up, and we need to get out of here before it does." He glanced from Charlie, to me to Alice. "Can you get us out of here?"

Alice nodded shakily. I couldn't think of another time I had seen Alice like this. Then again we were all struggling with the outcome of this evening's events. It definitely hadn't gone to plan.

The ground shook then, letting us know that the blasts hadn't ended.

I curled my body over Bella's just in case her shield finally gave out. Rose and Esme had the little girls and Emmett had moved to help shield Charlie.

It felt like ages before the destruction finally finished. More debris had fallen on the shield but it held steady with no problems.

Getting out of here is going to be difficult.

I glanced back at Carlisle and nodded.

He grimaced, glancing towards Rose and Esme. "How are the girls?"

Rose brushed a hand through Anna's curls protectively. "Anna's shaken up and she senses that the Undermining are still around."

Anna nodded just slightly before burying her head against Rose again.

"Cissy is wide awake, and starting to get fussy." Esme cooed softly to the baby trying to keep her calm despite the situation.

"If Anna is sensing the Undermining, then they are probably trying to find us," Jasper said. He shifted slightly and from his thoughts I knew he was trying to find a way out from under all the rubble.

Charlie groaned softly. "It won't take them long to find us. They'll be tracking the signal the girls and I give off. It will only take them a few minutes."

We all braced ourselves for the inevitable. With the limited space we had, Carlisle, Jasper, Emmett, and I settled into protective crouches. The others stayed low, trying to give us as much room as they could.

The minutes ticked by but no one came.

"They're leaving," Anna mumbled in surprise. She lifted her head towards the mess above us. "Why they leaving?" She placed her hand on Rose's cheek, but Rose didn't have an answer for her.

Charlie shook his head. "After today I won't question anything." He pushed himself to his knees and placed his hand on Bella's shield. It didn't give.

"So how do we get out of here?" Emmett placed a hand on the shield too. It didn't move either.

"It has to come down," Charlie tapped the shield again in thought.

Carlisle glanced around. "Even if we can get the shield down, we'll be buried under all of this."

"It's like playing Jenga but you're in the middle of it instead of being on the outside." Emmett grimaced.

Trying to figure out a safe way out was difficult. We could handle the debris, its weight wouldn't be too overwhelming. Keeping it from crushing Bella and her family though was the problem. There were so many different pieces above our heads and we only had so many hands. Even if Charlie took Bella, and one of us took both of the girls, it still only left us with twelve hands to hold up everything, and unbury our group.

Bella's shield started giving out then. Dirty and dust cascaded down on top of us first.

We had to move quickly. We moved closer together, so there wasn't as much that we had to hold up. Charlie snatched Bella from and managed to get Cissy from Esme too. Anna immediately let go of Rose. She stumbled towards Charlie, clinging to his leg tightly.

"Alice, any ideas?" Jasper asked her as he scanned above our heads.

I scanned Alice's visions with her, but none of them looked promising. We had a strict time limit now. We needed to get out before all the dust suffocated Anna and Cissy.

A quick glance at Bella and I couldn't help wondering how long she could last in this state while unconscious.

Shifting the debris to dig us out was easily the hardest and worst situation I could remember being in. It was time consuming and though every cough made me want to work faster, that just wasn't possible.

I fought off a groan. If we made it out of here and kept Bella and her family alive, I was never going to let Bella out of my sight. I didn't care what type of argument she threw at me. If she survived, she was never leaving my side.

Something moved above us, but I couldn't figure out how. I scanned the area and grimaced. We had finally been found, but it wasn't help coming for us.

"We've got company," I warned the others.

They all nodded.

We waited for them to finish digging us out, so we could keep what strength we had left.

You have got to be kidding me, Rose growled in her thoughts when she saw who was digging us out. She shuffled through the last of the mess getting out before any of the rest of us could. She launched herself without thinking at Duke.

The older man caught her around the middle.

"Auntie!" Anna yelled. She coughed then struggled to get up to Rose.

Alice grabbed her before she could.

"Calm down," the older man instructed Rose firmly.

Rose struggled against him. "I'll kill him," she hissed.

We all scrambled out of the rest of the debris.

The man took one look at us and stepped in front of Duke, his firmly around Rose. "Let's all calm down before we do something we'll regret," he advised.

"Auntie, it's okay," Anna yelled to Rose as she struggled to get out of Alice's grasp. She pushed at Alice's arms. "That's Duke, but not the one in the house."

We all turned to Anna.

"What do you mean little Belle?" The man asked.

Anna pointed at Duke as best as she could. "That's really Duke. The one in the house was an impostor. For real Grandpa Ray."

Grandpa Ray?

We all turned to the older man. He was the famous Grandpa Ray. I thought back to Bella's description of him, comparing it to what I saw.

The man's face was partially concealed behind a thick mustache and full beard. His head was covered by the same shocking white hair. He was just as pale as the rest of us vampires, but his dark eyes were completely black. At the moment I wouldn't have been able to tell if he really did share our diet.

Grandpa Ray moved to stand in front of Alice and Anna, taking Rose with him. "Show me what you mean Anna." He offered her his hand.

Anna took his hand and we waited.

Rose reached out to see what Anna was showing him.

"This is Duke, and this is what I felt from the other one."

Someone had only pretended to be Duke? It was a ploy, they must not have wanted to give up the traitor's real identity.

"We'll discuss this later, we don't want to be caught out here." Grandpa Ray took Anna from Alice. Follow me.

We all agreed, though it wasn't we weren't going to. Wherever he was going with Anna we were going too. Then there was the fact we all had been curious to meet Grandpa Ray. This was our chance.

I turned to Charlie, reaching my arms out as a silent request to take Bella from him. I didn't want to overstep, but at the moment I really needed her.

He seemed to understand.

"Are you okay to run?" Emmett asked.

Charlie fixed the goggles on his head and nodded.

Carlisle glanced from Charlie to Emmett, wondering if Charlie should run.

"I'll be fine," Charlie shot at him.

Duke pulled out a set of keys. "I could give you lift back Charlie?"

Charlie glanced at the keys but Grandpa Ray stopped him from answering. "Duke, the others are going to hear about the safe house soon. I want you to arrive with them, and you need to be as oblivious as them."

Duke nodded. He sent a wave and a nod to the rest of us before taking off in the opposite direction.

Grandpa Ray led us away from the house, going farther away from the populated area.

We ended up at what appeared to be an abandoned ranch house.

The run hadn't helped wake Bella, and it had upset Cissy. The little one was screaming by the time we had entered the house.

Anna reached for her sister as Esme passed with her. Grandpa Ray set her down and gently took Cissy from Esme.

He glanced back at me. "There's a bedroom down the hall that you can put Bella in." Turning back to Esme he said, "I'll take care of this one, if you'll go ahead and get that one in bed."

Anna pulled at his top. "I don't want to go to bed. I want to help Cissy."

"Come on, let's get Bella to bed." Charlie motioned for me to follow him. I did and I found a small room with a double bed sitting in the middle.

"Do you think Bella will be alright?" I couldn't help but ask.

Charlie didn't say anything at first. He grabbed a set of pajamas from the small dresser across from the bed.

"I could get her cleaned up." Alice appeared beside me. She reached her arms towards me, and a reluctantly handed her Bella.

Charlie and I walked out of the room, but he stopped me from continuing down the hall. "I don't know how this is going to affect Bella."

Before I could start panicking he added, "But I know she'll be okay."

I nodded not entirely reassured, but I followed him back to the living room. He sat down with a groan beside Carlisle.

"Are you alright Charlie?" Carlisle turned to him.

I took a seat beside Emmett. He and Jasper were thinking about Grandpa Ray. He had taken Cissy to another part of the house. Rose had followed him without question, while Esme took care of Anna.

A brief check on Anna showed me, she was not happy. Esme had decided on a bath so she'd be clean for bed. With all that she had done tonight, Anna was definitely acting like a normal three-year-old. Esme would be able to handle her with no problem. So I checked Rose's thoughts so I could watch Grandpa Ray.

He had Cissy cradled in one of his arms while he held a bottle in the other. Whatever he was giving her, she didn't seem to mind it. The strange purplish color though was worrying Rose. He wasn't answering any of her questions. It was as if he didn't even know she was there.

I checked his thoughts, but all he was thinking of was his wife. His mind was focused only on the woman, on his sweet angel.

Why was he blocking his mind?

What's wrong?

I spared Jasper a look. "Grandpa Ray is blocking his mind.

Jasper narrowed his eyes thoughtfully. "Are you positive? He's really worried about Cissy. He's not thinking about her?"

I shook my head. "All he thinks about is his wife, and Even then it's just a vague description and basic declaration of love.

Rose joined us then. Giving up and trying to get Grandpa Ray to answer her questions.

Charlie offered Rose a smile. "He knows what he is doing Rosalie. Your niece is going to be just fine."

She nodded but huffed gruffly as she sat beside Emmett. "I need to hunt."

"We all should," Carlisle replied.

Alice was the next to join us, with Esme following after her. We were just waiting for Grandpa Ray.

He came through the living room, but didn't so much as acknowledge any of us. When he came back he sat down in the chair beside Charlie. He side and rubbed his head with one of his hands. "I'm sorry to keep you waiting but I had to make sure that Cissy and Bella were alright. They both will be sleeping for a little while."

"Well," Charlie began. "I'm glad I called you."

Grandpa Ray nodded. "Me too. Were any of you hurt?"

We all shook our heads.

"Was Cissy hurt? Is that why she was so upset?" Rose glared at Grandpa Ray, daring him not to answer her this time.

Grandpa Ray met her gaze easily. "I didn't find any injuries, but she was exhausted both mentally and physically. Her energy has been drained."

"You make it sound as if she's been using magic," Charlie narrowed his eyes. "You think Cissy's gift has come in."

Grandpa Ray eyed Charlie sharply. "Duke and I were only able to find you because we used Bella's information box. I could only track Bella."

The seven of us watched as Charlie's face changed from surprise to uncertainty.

"That doesn't make any sense," he finally said.

Grandpa Ray took an information box from his pocket. "It actually makes perfect sense. Someone, concealed your energy so you couldn't be tracked. Then there was the fact someone stabilized Bella's energy and stopped her percentage from increasing. I'm certain Cissy is a connector."

He leaned forward towards Charlie. "The magic for it is instinctual, Cissy wouldn't have to manipulate it to get a family connection up, and it explains why I couldn't track the three of you, and why Bella's energy stabilized after that incident with her shields. There would have been plenty of energy to even force Bella's percentage to stop increasing too.

"That's why Bella's shield remained up too," Charlie said, realization filling him. He quickly explained what happened at the house, telling him about the confrontation with James and the Undermining. Ending with just before they had unburied us.

Grandpa Ray got up and started pacing at a human pace. "There's no doubt about it, Cissy is a connector. She connected herself to Bella and her magic put the shield up to protect her."

"Is it really possible for her to be able to do that?" Esme asked him. "She's still just a baby. Surely she's not old enough for that much control or ability."

Grandpa Ray paused to explain. "A Connectors power is instinctual. As long as they have a good connection to another person they can use their magic to connect them and all that matters is whether they have the energy to handle it."

Carlisle nodded thoughtfully. "That explains why Cissy got so fussy, then."

Grandpa Ray nodded and went back to his pacing.

"I thought we figured Cissy's gift was super speed?" Emmett asked.

Charlie glanced at Rose. "Her powers will recognize who is family, no matter how direct the path is. She must have been connecting to you and that caused the speed."

Rose smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes. "What does this mean for Cissy?"

Grandpa Ray sighed, and took a seat. "Training will be difficult to say. It could be easy or hard. It will depend on how well Cissy responds to it. Controlling what she connects to is what will be the hard part, and what will take the most energy. Connecting itself she'll do practically subconsciously. I'll work on coming up with ideas to help, but it might take a while. I think you're right though Charlie. If Cissy was going to connect to any of the Cullens, it would be an actual relative."

Esme leaned against Carlisle's side. "What about her energy level? Everything we've heard about Anna and her energy… will she have too much energy too, or not much because of her powers."

Grandpa Ray didn't seem worried about that though. "She'll be gaining more energy than she can handle with her being so little. She'll be fine though, her and Anna can pass energy back and forth and give some to Bella. Honestly I think it will be good to have more energy that can be passed to Bella."

He turned to Charlie then. "

This time the smile was closer to reaching Rose's eyes.

I turned back to Grandpa Ray, trying hard to get into his thoughts, but he was still only thinking of his wife, hiding his real thoughts.

"I'm sorry Sir, but…"

"Grandpa Ray please, I don't answer to Sir." Grandpa Ray interrupted me.

I nodded. "Grandpa Ray, I can't help thinking, that you're hiding something from us."

The man actually laughed. "I have learned to protect my mind as best as I can. As you know our kind can think of many things at once. To protect my thoughts, I keep a constant string of thoughts of my wife. I have dealt with many mind readers in my lifetime, and I've learned to hide behind a constant thought. Feel free to ask me whatever you want, but you won't get anything from my mind; unless I let you in."

His grin helped ease my mind and I nodded.

Silence filled the room until Charlie final spoke up. "We need to get back to Forks as soon as possible. Now that it's safe for Bella to go back, we should really make our way back."

Grandpa Ray pushed himself out of his seat again. "I understand Charlie, I'll go see about the arrangements, but we should give Bella at least a day before we have to move her. At the moment she's safer than we could have ever expected."

"Only because they think she's dead," Charlie shot back. "As soon as one of them have a mind to check for our signals they'll learn the truth."

"Unfortunately that will be the case, but she'll be back in Forks before they even think to check for your signal." Grandpa Ray pulled his phone from his pocket and left out the front door.

We all watched the exchange silently. I wanted to say something, anything to help Bella's dad, but I couldn't think of anything.

Alice get up though and took the chair that Grandpa Ray had left. "Bella didn't live with you because your dad was a hunter." It wasn't a question.

What? Rose.

That's why he knows so much about Hunters. Emmett.

The poor man. Esme.

Did his dad know about Bella? Carlisle.

I couldn't comprehend what Alice had said. Bella's Grandfather had been a hunter. He had gone after her kind. I surely hoped he had never known about Bella. Then there was the question of whether or not he was still alive. Was he one of the people after Bella?

Charlie sighed, he dropped his head, gazing at the ground. "Hunters gain members by adding family and friends. The Swan family legacy line, was destroyed because every person in the line became a hunter. Including my older brother."

Bella didn't mention an Uncle. Jasper.

His dad and Brother was a hunter. Oh poor Charlie. Alice.

Had Charlie been a hunter? Emmett.

His whole legacy line? That's awful. Rose.

How did he end up not being a Hunter? Esme.

I can't even imagine what he must have gone through when they found out about Bella. Carlisle.

I stared at Charlie, not allowing myself to think about whether or not Charlie had been a Hunter. He wasn't one now and that was all that mattered.

He shook his head and continued when none of us questioned him. "Bella didn't live with me or come to visit much because of my brother, not my dad. Bella doesn't know about him," he sighed gravely, "but he knows about her. He learned after the first bit of information on her was collected by the signs."

I heard the rest in Charlie's thoughts. He was too upset to realize his shield was down. He and his brother had fought. Charlie had never believed like his dad or any other men in his family. He had believed that his family were killers, so when his brother had threatened Bella's life, they had fought. His brother took off, and Charlie hadn't seen him since.

"I haven't seen him in years, and I've done just about everything I can to make sure he can't get to Bella." He ran a hand through his hair, and his breath came out shakily. "That's the second most important reasons why we need to get back to Forks."

Alice reached out and placed a hand on Charlie's shoulder. "So you have spells in place to keep your brother from finding Bella, but not other hunters?"

That didn't make sense. If spells could keep hunters from finding people, why wouldn't the Rebellion use them to protect all the transitional creatures they could find?

Charlie glanced grimly down at his hands. "Thanks to the signs, spells don't work on Hunters. They counteract spells, invisibility types of magic. Nothing can be hidden from the signs."

Then how was he protect Bella from his brother? It was the question we all wanted to know.

"As long as I'm in Forks, he can't touch her." He closed his eyes and continued. "Every Hunter has a place where they were bound to the group. It is their greatest weakness, because if it is destroyed their last bit of themselves that holds them to the other world is gone. They become normal humans. They lose the strength, their skills and abilities, and their life as a normal human doesn't last long."

No their human life didn't last long. From Charlie's thoughts I was able to pick up the horrible truth about it. The way the hunters thought, and what they made of their lives, though, I couldn't bring myself to care that they only last a few months. It sounded like a fitting punishment.

"As long as I'm in Forks where I can hold his last connection to this world over his head…" He sighed. "It's the only way to protect Bella from him. I just hope he'll follow the code."

"I take it the code is why we don't have to worry about the Hunters telling the Undermining where Bella is?" Esme asked softly.

Charlie only nodded.

I couldn't help but wonder about his dad, but before I could ask, Alice showed me the conversation she and Jasper had with Bella. I felt bad for Charlie, but I was glad he hadn't been around when they found out about Bella.

"Charlie?" Emmett called. He wasn't sure whether or not it would be a good idea to ask him any more questions about his family but he was just as curious as the rest of us.

Charlie met his curious look and nodded towards him. "Go ahead and ask, Emmett. I'll tell you whatever you want to know."

Emmett grinned at that. "I couldn't help remembering your ring. You said those were for the Rebellion, but you have one and your dad…"

Charlie leaned back in his seat getting comfortable. "My mother was secretly a part of the Rebellion. She gave me one of the rings, and she told my dad it was family heirloom of hers. He didn't think anything of it because he adored her.

He continued without even being asked. "My mother didn't agree with my dad, but they were mates and she did love him. She tried very hard to get him to change his ways, but he was firm in his beliefs till the end. He was one of the bests, and many hunters came to pay their respects when he died after finishing his lifespan.

"I didn't go, because Bella was a baby and my mother and I agreed Renee and Bella shouldn't be around them. My brother was furious, he had expected me to introduce Bella to the world; she would have been tenth generation." He snorted. "Then she ended up being a Transitional."

"Your mother kept you from the life of a Hunter, I assume," Carlisle said.

Charlie nodded, but frowned. "It was hard, but I wanted nothing to do with that life, but you can imagine how my dad felt. "If it hadn't have been for my mother, I would have been forced to be a part of them. I never would have gone out and hunted, but I wouldn't have my long life ahead of me." He yawned then, and Carlisle put an end to the questions.

"You should get some sleep."

Charlie rubbed his eyes. "We have more to discuss."

"They can wait," Carlisle countered. "You need your sleep."

Charlie didn't argue. He got up, bid us all good night and went to check on Bella before he went to bed. He seemed to know his way around this house.

Grandpa Ray didn't come back until the early morning. His dark eyes were now a definite gold color. "I didn't mean to be out this long."

"It's alright," Esme reassured him.

He took his seat that Alice had given up to go back to sitting with Jasper. "If you'd like, you could follow my scent through the back yard, and it will lead you to a decent hunting ground. You should be able to find a few coyotes around here too. Charlie and I can take care of the girls until you get back."

Hunting was a must and we all knew it. After nearly being blown up we all were thirsty.

As soon as we had left the yard our groups separated to hunt. I looked for something quick so I could get back to Bella.

"Whose house is this?" Esme asked Grandpa Ray as she cooked for the girls and Charlie.

I listened absentmindedly. I wanted to be by Bella's side, but Alice was currently get her ready to go. We were going to be leaving as soon as Charlie and the girls finished their dinner.

"It's one of my many hideaways. I have them scattered around the world, making it easier for me to hide." Grandpa Ray fixed up another bottle of the strange purplish drink, and once again he refused to answer any questions about it. Cissy didn't seem to mind it, so I wasn't going to bother with it.

His phone went off again, and I snatched it up before Anna could.

"Anna I told you, I don't want any of you talking to anyone from the other world, and especially if they are the possible traitor." Grandpa Ray scolded Anna gently and took the phone.

"Carlos, I don't know what to tell you. I'll look into and see why Bella hasn't called you. I will handle it, I promise." He hung up the phone before Carlos could even reply.

Emmett took a seat at the table, bringing Anna her food. "How long do you think, Anna and Cissy, are going to continue acting like normal babies."

"I'm not a baby," Anna yelled back at him.

I sighed. Grandpa Ray had found no reason why Anna couldn't give energy to Bella. It wasn't going to hurt her, and it was helping, but I didn't think it was worth it. She couldn't pass off enough to get Bella to wake up, she had to do that on her own according to Grandpa Ray; so we were just ending up with a very grumpy toddler.

"You need to use your inside voice." Charlie patted Anna's rear, not hard enough to be considered a spanking but she seemed to get the idea. She pouted and started eating her dinner.

This day was dragging on and I was more than ready to be back home. We needed to get back as soon as possible anyway for Bella, and yet it seemed everything was against us. We should have left hours ago.

I tried to think positively. We hadn't just been sitting around doing nothing. Jasper had worked with Anna, and they had been able to show us all the sensation that came from the impostor.

"When we get back to your house I'll show you how to sort through what Anna feels during her days. Then you'll be able to help her." Grandpa Ray didn't have to finish. Jasper knew what he was talking about.

"Thanks, I appreciate it." Then we'll be able to find the person who betrayed Bella and her family.

That person wouldn't know what hit them, when we found out. Finding them though was going to be the problem. I already knew Bella was going to struggle with it. From what Grandpa Ray and Charlie told us about that house, only Toby's most trusted friends knew about it. The traitor was part of his inner circle.

Author's Note.

First of all it was so hard to write the beginning of this chapter, I just couldn't stop laughing at Edward.

Secondly I'm ending the chapter here, and putting everything that happens back at the Cullen house in front of the chapter where Bella wakes up.

I really hope you guys liked this chapter and all the information in it.

What are your thoughts on Charlie's family? Did anyone somehow guess that was the secret Charlie was hiding? (Chapter 15-A, Cullen's POV)

So I finished the chapter by the deadline, but it didn't get posted until early Wednesday morning. Sorry but this chapter was hard to write. I really hoped you guys liked it, though.

There's only two chapters left after this one, and I'm getting really excited for the Cullen's POV of Transitionals: New Moon.

Until next time,
