Chapter 3: What I Love About You
Excited and hopeful. That is how Betty and Daniel felt as they shared their first meal in their new place together. They were having a great time talking and catching up on the two weeks they spent apart, laughing at how crazy they were.
"Did you really almost burn my release form, Daniel?" Betty giggled.
Daniel nodded, his face had a pinkish tint. "Uh, ya, I wanted to let you go, but then I freaked out and thought, hell I don't want you to go, so I thought about burning your form, but had this vision of it going horribly wrong"
Betty bit her lip, trying to keep from smiling.
"Um...well, if it makes you feel any better, as I was getting ready to board my plane, I imagined you stopping me from getting on and I thought it was real...I ended up hugging the flight attendant"
He grinned "really?"
She nodded blushing "It was so embarrassing! I felt like such a dummy!"
He shook his head and picked up her hand "Nah, you're adorable! I love you, Betty. I'm so happy to...share my life with you."
She bit her lip to keep from tearing up again.
He looked at her eyes "You know I thought about stopping you from getting on that plane, but then I thought about you more and how I felt about you. I realized it doesn't matter where we are, New York or London, as long as I'm in the same place as you I'm happy. And I'd do anything to keep you happy, including starting over in a different country so your dream comes true."
She looked at him, feeling speechless, as she saw that sincerity in his eyes. He grinned and held her face "You are so...I have no words for how I feel when I look at you, Betty. I just know that you make me happy."
She nodded "You make me happy, too, Daniel. Thank you"
He looked at her strangely "for what?"
"For caring about me so much. It is just one of the many things I love about you" she said with a playful smile.
He grinned. "Oh yeah?"
She nodded with a smile. He leaned closer to her and in a low voice asked "What else do you love about me?"
His voice gave her butterflies. She bit her lip in thought, but gave him a flirty smile "I love your blue eyes."
The grin on his face was bright. She laughed and continued "I love how kind and thoughtful you are. You are always there for me."
"I try" he said with a playful tone.
She laughed. "I also love how spontaneous and handsome and charming you are. You don't realize how wonderful you really are, Daniel. You have always inspired me and encouraged me, even when I felt like I was failing."
Daniel smiled as he listened to his sweet Betty tell him what she loved about him. He was more sure every minute being with her that was exactly where he wanted to be.
Seeing the smile on his face and those beautiful blue eyes shining with light, and him looking so incredibly handsome made Betty feel happy. She smiled brighter "I love that you are MY best friend. I'd do anything for you."
She grinned "And I can't forget, I love how gosh darn HOT you are! After all that, that's love, right?"
He laughed "God, I love you, Betty. You're so cute!" He took her face in his hands and kissed her, feeling so much love for her. He just knew that she would always be the light of his life. She wrapped her arms around him kissing him back, and he could feel her love and passion and it was making his heart expand.
Several hours later after Daniel helped Betty unpack the few things she brought with her, he was lying on the couch in the living room. He'd gotten very little sleep in the past couple of weeks thinking about her and trying to figure out everything he could do to keep her in his life.
Just as he was dozing off he saw her walking over with that brilliant smile on her face as she looked at him. She sat in a chair close to him. His heart was definitely hers to keep.
She bit her lip, her cheeks turning rosy as she watched him. He grinned and wiggled his eyebrows playfully. "Hey there gorgeous!"
She looked at him with a sweet smile, that blushing still evident. "Hmm...you know what we should do?"
He looked at her in wonder "What?"
"We should have a celebratory drink"
He looked intrigued "What for?"
She shrugged "Well, 1, my best friend told me he loves me."
His smile was instantly bright. She smiled "2, my best friend is the greatest love of my life."
He nodded in agreement that he thought that about her. "3, we are going to be living in this beautiful apartment in this new country together." Betty felt butterflies. Everything felt so surreal. She was still in awe that this was really happening.
He surprised her when he got up from the couch and got on his knees in front of her. Her heart skipped a beat when he took her hands in both of his and said "I love you so much"
She felt speechless. Was Daniel...proposing to her? He couldn't be. Not this soon! It was crazy!
He held her face and kissed her, then sat back on the couch. She looked at him feeling dazed. He watched her for a moment, enjoying just how sweet she looked. He smiled and said in a soft tone "I actually have a bottle of champagne in the kitchen."
"Really? Perfect, I'll get it" she said as she got up and headed towards the kitchen.
"It's in the cupboard" he said, drowsily. She smiled hearing how tired he sounded.
Daniel sighed as he thought about how fun it was going to be living with her, when his eyes grew wide realizing what he put up there alongside the bottle of champagne. "Oh shit, Betty, wait!" He shot up from the couch to see her reaching up on her tiptoes, opening up the cupboard to have this small red ring box fall, but he caught in his hands just in time.
Betty turned and looked at him in wonder "Daniel! What was that?!" she asked, seeing that it was some type of jewelry box. A ring box? She wondered. Her heart fluttering.
He shook his head and said "uh, nothing! Just uh…" he reached over her for the champagne bottle and said "Weren't we going to have a toast?" he said trying to distract her from what she almost found.
She smiled, her cheeks turning rosy, her heart racing, but said "yes, of course. Thanks for bringing it down" she said as she found two empty glasses and placed them on the counter.
Daniel felt like his heart was in his throat. He was suddenly completely flustered as she watched him intently as he popped open the bottle and poured them each a glass.
He looked to her and she was watching him with this luminous smile, her eyes were shining, especially since she wasn't wearing her glasses. He smiled and handed her a glass.
She took it from him, her hand wrapping around his, her eyes locked on his, her touch making his heart beat faster. He felt his throat close up "Uh...to us?"
She nodded "Mhm...to us" she said quietly as she clinked her glass with his, her eyes remained on him as she took a small sip. He chuckled "Betty, will you stop?!"
"What?" she asked innocently.
He grinned "You know what you're doing!"
She shook her head "I don't know what you're talking about Daniel. I was just drinking my champagne." she said before she took another sip, but there was this mischievous sparkle in her eyes.
He rolled his eyes "Sure. I know you saw the box"
"What box?" she asked, feigning ignorance. He placed his glass down and took hers placing it next to his, then gently took her hand in his, softly sweeping his thumb across her ring finger, making it clear what that box implied. "You know exactly what that was" he said in a low gravelly voice.
She bit her lip, her heart racing, his voice giving her butterflies. "Ok...so…"
He grinned and lifted her hand to place a kiss, his eyes meeting hers once more. "So...what do you think about that?"
She didn't know what to say. Of course she hoped it was what she thought it was, but it could just be earrings or a necklace or any piece of jewelry, really. She didn't want to jump to conclusions. Besides, they had barely started their more than friendship phase in their relationship. She didn't want to rush anything. It would be completely crazy to jump from friends to...that! Wouldn't it?
"What exactly should I be thinking about?" she asked, trying to get him to ask her directly what he wanted to know.
He smirked "You are such a tease, Betty. You know… uh… us..being..you know, more than friends."
She grinned "I thought we were already doing that" she teased.
He sighed "Betty!"
She laughed "Daniel! Just ask me what you want to know?"
He felt like his heart was racing around a track at her teasing. "Uh...well...I mean to say would you maybe...you know, in the future...consider wanting to uh...be my…" he sighed, feeling beyond nervous. She was lighting his heart on fire with the dreamy smile on her face and her eyes shining in glee.
"Your what?" Betty stared at Daniel, her heart nearly floating outside of her body in anticipation.
He didn't know why but he suddenly found it hard to find his words. "Daniel?" her voice broke him from his stupor. "Mhm…"
She lifted her hand to his chest and drew herself in closer to him. She leaned up, her mouth nearing his cheek, causing his heart to race more; when he thought she was going to kiss him, she reached in his pocket and took the box in her hands and moved around him with a laugh "Hah, I got it! Is this that box you were referring to?" she teased playfully.
"Betty... dammit, you're so infuriating! Give me that back!" he tried to wrap his arms around her as she held the box behind her back, but she ducked and moved around him again.
She laughed and said "Is this what I think it is? Maybe I should take a peek and see?" she said as she started to open it, but she gasped when he pinned her between the fridge and his body, his hands lifting hers above her as his eyes were fixed on hers.
She looked at him in surprise, her heart galloping in her chest at how close he was and the intense look in his eyes. "It's exactly what you think it is" he said in a quiet voice.
She bit her lip, her eyes becoming glossy at the intense loving look in his eyes. "Is that so?"
He smiled "Mhm"
"Well...in that case, don't you want to ask me a question?"
He took the box into his hand and wrapped his arm around her waist "I don't know, you have to tell me something first"
"What's that?" she asked in a daze, his touch giving her tingles everywhere. He smiled "Would it be too much too fast if I asked you that special question?" he asked.
"Hmm...I think the only way you could know for sure is if you ask that question" she said, taking a nervous gulp at the implications of what they were discussing, or not discussing.
"Ok...fair enough." he picked up his glass of champagne and made his way back over to the couch. She stared at him in confusion "Daniel, aren't you, I mean are you gonna-" she sighed "nevermind" she took her glass and followed him.
A wicked smirk crossed his face as he walked away from Betty. If she was teasing him, he was going to tease her right back. He was enjoying her playfulness regarding the situation. He was glad she didn't freak out or get nervous at seeing it. It just made him want to kiss her senseless.
He wanted to tease her and throw her off a bit. As he took a seat on the couch, he saw her come over and take a seat on the love chair next to him. He saw the somewhat disappointed and confused look on her face.
"Hey, I totally forgot, I have something for you" he said, wanting to distract her to really surprise her.
"Really? What?" she asked, her smile beaming again.
He grinned as he went over to the fridge and opened it, taking out a chocolate dessert. He walked over and smiled, seeing her eyes light up as she saw it "Oo! Is that for me?" she asked, seeing the small heart shaped chocolate cake with berries in the center.
He nodded with a smile as he placed it down in front of her "Mhm, sure is"
"Oh! It looks so yummy!" she said as she swiped her finger through the chocolate fudgy frosting. "Mmm"
He chuckled. "I was going to give you this later, but...maybe you'd like it now?" he said as he handed her a small envelope with her name hand written in a script-y font.
She looked at him with a smile and opened the flap wondering what it was.
She took the card out, the writing a little blurry since she wasn't wearing her glasses, but she could read 'I love you'. Her eyes shined as she looked to him with a sweet smile.
He smiled, watching her, his heart skipping at how freaking beautiful she was looking. She opened the card and gasped as she read the contents, then looked to him in surprise to see him on his knees in front of her, holding out the red box they had joked about.
"So...Betty, will you marry me?" he asked, his eyes shining. She looked at him in awe, her heart racing and nodded eagerly "Mhm"
"Oh no, missy, I need to hear you say what I want!" he teased.
She laughed and threw herself at him, knocking him down to the floor as she said "Yes, silly, I'll marry you!"
He laughed, but said "Oww, Betty, we really need to tame this clumsiness of yours" he teased playfully. She laughed, her eyes shining as she took him in, feeling awed that he asked her to marry him. "I love you so much!"
He nodded with a warm smile "I love you" he pulled her down for a kiss; her hands came up to his face and through his hair as she returned the kiss with such a loving passion, he was overwhelmed by how she was making him feel. He held her face and moved back to see her eyes "You really wanna marry me, sweetie?"
Her eyes became glossy as she nodded "Mhm...I love you so much! I can't imagine spending my life with anyone else! You're my best friend and I can't live without you"
He smiled as he brushed his hand across her cheek "I feel the same way about you, Betty. I don't know what I'd do without you. You make me so happy."
A tear slid down and he wiped it away and sat up, pulling her up with him. "Here, see the ring. I hope you like it. I saw it and it made me think of you"
She watched him, her heart lifting at how amazing and handsome and charming he was looking to her right now. He was so wonderful, she wouldn't care what the ring looked like, but when he opened the box to show it to her she gasped at how pretty it was.
"It's beautiful!" she said in awe at how stunning the design looked and how pretty the color was; it was a champagne color ring with a square blush pink sapphire set in between three petal shaped diamonds on either side. It was perfect!
Daniel watched her with a smile, enjoying how beautiful she looked, her eyes shining with light and that pretty breathtaking smile on her face. She was most certainly the love of his life. He couldn't imagine his life without her in it. She made his life worth living. When she looked to him with a smile, his eyes became glossy at how deeply she filled his heart.
Her smile seemed to get brighter and he couldn't stop himself from pulling her to him for a hug. "I love you so much Betty"
"I love you, Daniel. Thank you so much!"
"For what? I should be thanking you. You've made my life so much better. I can't believe it took us so long to see how much we meant to each other."
She nodded as she pulled away "Me too"
He smiled and took the ring out of the box and took her hand placing it on, then placed a sweet kiss to her hand. She smiled and looked to her hand, her eyes glittering just as bright as her new favorite piece of jewelry.
Happy and loved. That is how they felt in this new chapter of their lives and that they could share it together and love each other forever.
AN: I found out that the pink sapphire symbolizes trust, loyalty, sincerity, and good fortune and intense love. That definitely seems appropriate and perfect for our lovely duo!
