The Christmas and the new year had already been and gone, but there was still plenty of snow around to keep everybody complaining for a while. Delsin gasped and panted as he worked away trying to clear a few feet of snow from the driveway. His truck couldn't be moved at all thanks to the snow that swept in the night before, topping everything up. Catarina watched him toil away with his big shovel.
'I wish this snow would just stop already.' Delsin whined. Catarina just laughed at him.
'Oh I don't think it should, I quite like it.' She grinned. Delsin was bundled up in a thick heavy coat in order to keep the cold out whilst Cat was quite happy stood in the doorway in her sweats and a vest top; not bothered one bit by the coldness in the air. Cat watched Delsin for a little while longer with a slight grin on her face.
'Delsin you should've asked me to help.' Catarina said to him as he dug away at the snow.
'Nah it's fine, I got this. It won't take long.'
Caterina grinned even more as she shook her head. She held out her hand and concentrated for a moment. The remaining snow around the truck had started to swirl around and was soon drifting in to the mound that Delsin had made. He stood and leant on the snow shovel handle, watching Catarina move the snow with minimal effort. The drive was clear within half a minute.
'Why didn't I think of that before?' Delsin sighed as he walked over to Cat and propped his shovel up against the side of the house.
'Well I tried telling you several times before.' Cat replied with a chuckle. 'But you wouldn't listen.'
Delsin shuffled back inside the house and took all of his cold weather clothing off before he wandered in to the kitchen to put the kettle on for a cup of tea, whilst Caterina made herself comfortable on the sofa. Delsin had a bit of a think whilst he was making tea; both he and Cat had become complacent with their lives now. As the days went on, they were barely using their powers at all for anything. It had always been in the back of his mind and he knew it was probably the same for Cat too; but what could they use their powers for now? It wasn't like they could use them for everyday use.
'Whats the point in having powers if you can't put them to good use?' Delsin thought. Then he remembered the law. Conduits couldn't just go ahead and be superheroes or vigilantes and they definitely got punished if they used their powers to commit crimes.
Delsin and Caterina were definitely out of practice. And it was now getting to the point where they would sometimes forget they even had powers. Delsin thought about it a little more but was soon brought back to reality when the kettle had finished boiling and clicked off. He quickly made two cups of tea and headed over to the sofa to sit with Cat; handing her a cup of tea before sitting down.
Several weeks had passed and the new year was in full swing. Everybody was glad that the snow had finally gone and there probably wouldn't be any more; everybody except Caterina was glad of this. She was already waiting for the warmer weather to come and go as she never really did too well with the heat. The leaves had already started to come back on the trees, the grass was growing and all the animals on the reserve were finally coming back out after the long winter. Caterina did like the bright, colourful scenery and the soundtrack that went with it provided by the birds chirping, bees buzzing and the sound of running water in the rivers; but the sun beating down on her like it did just made her tired and sleepy.
But seeing as the weather had been so nice, Caterina had decided to do some gardening whilst Delsin was out running errands. She had bought loads of stuff earlier in the week like window boxes and large outdoor pots, various flowers already in bloom seed trays, seeds and loads of compost. It kept her occupied for a while and she felt like she had brightened up the place. Cat was also a little bit dirty now and quite thirsty from her hard work sprucing the place up. She wandered back inside to get herself a glass of water before she went back out to finish up and clean up some of the mess she left.
Just as Catarina had finished her glass of water and was ready to go back out, she heard her phone ringing in her handbag which was on the kitchen table. She pulled out her phone and answered it.
'Caterina Mikkola.'
'Hi Caterina, it's Stacy. How are you doing?'
'Oh hey Stacy. Yeah I'm fine, how are you?'
'Busy but good thanks. Listen, I've just been in a meeting with the ACA; the American Camping Association. We want to try out a new idea of having summer camps for Conduit children, y'know where they can be in the company of adult Conduits, learn to control their powers, do a bunch of activities, meet other kids like themselves. That sort of thing. It'll be a first and hopefully, a yearly thing if the trial goes well.'
'That sounds pretty neat actually. How old would the kids be?'
'The trial group, their ages would be from twelve to fifteen. Co-ed for three weeks at the Easter Seals camp just outside of Seattle.'
'This sounds like a really great idea Stacy. Can I help out in any way?'
'That's why I'm calling actually. I wanted to ask if both you and Delsin would be interested in being the camps councillors?'
'Oh wow. I mean I'm flattered you thought of us. I'm up for it, but I'll have to ask Delsin when he gets back but I'm sure he'd be up for it too.'
'Well ask Delsin and see what he thinks when you get the chance. I'll e-mail you some more information so have a read through and see what you think. Is that okay?'
'Sure thing Stacy.'
'Oh, I've already asked Eugene and Abigail too but they haven't got back to me yet, I guess they're both busy.'
'Haha you just reminded me I need to speak to them both, we've all been pretty busy.'
'Well I hope you all say yes. This may really be a turning point for Conduits, especially the kids who are having trouble with coming to terms with being a Conduit let alone growing up too.'
'Yeah I know what it's like going through that.'
'And that's why I think you'd be perfect as a camp councillor Cat. Anyway I'd better let you go, I have another meeting this afternoon too.'
'Thanks for calling Stacy. I'll get back to you as soon as I've asked Delsin.'
'Thanks Cat, you take care.'
'Bye for now Stacy, speak soon!'
Catarina hung up the phone and took a moment to process what had just happened. It filled her with a warm feeling. Stacy had just asked her and Delsin to be councillors at the world's first Conduit Camp for kids. She thought how nice it would be to help these children out especially knowing what it was like to be young and suddenly have all these powers. She was going to ask Delsin if he wanted in on it as soon as he got home. But right now she had more gardening to do.
