Week 1, day 5:
Chapter 20: Becoming Back to Normal:
It was at least 5 minutes until Joshua calmed down and went silent from misery.
Joshua saw Ayumu's blond hair ahead of him as he seemed to stare into space, but Joshua's mind was on what happened merely a few minutes ago.
Did he truly try to let himself fade into erasure?
How could he be so selfish?
And… who was that woman?
The ashen blond haired boy tilted his head slightly, for some reason he felt grateful to who it was that gave him a second chance at being a better brother for Ayumu. Ayumu needed him.
"Over way." he looked over to his younger half brother who called, his weird blind pewter eyes drifted back absently as he went on "One Noise are over in nearby…"
Joshua tried to smile a little "Good."
'I can't be happy, if Ayumu is like this…' thought Joshua as his dulled lavender eyes slowly traveled away from Ayumu, to the direction the younger half brother was looking a second ago.
He went back to frowning as he moped about what Ayumu did before, making him cry as he read the mission.
Suddenly a thought occurred 'Wait? How could Ayumu know where the Noise are?'
"I sensed it, nearby one, and other one a bit in other district there." Ayumu pointed in each direction, mostly Joshua saw each direction was the 104 Building and the way to the Statue of Hachiko, "Mission is to find Noise, so we go to Building of 104 first Josh?"
With a curt nod in mope, Joshua didn't care if Ayumu was to lead them for now or not.
Just as he began to follow, Ayumu who placed his hand forward halted him by his chest "Rei"
Before Joshua could ask he saw Ayumu take out his normal clothing from a black colored satchel, to his embarrassment Joshua discovered he was still wearing Rei's choice of clashing clothing from yesterday "She gave this, she told me to give you to change."
"Thanks…" that was the only thing he could say as he received the clothing, also he noticed now that Ayumu wasn't wearing the clashing clothing Rei picked out randomly for him.
Maybe when Joshua tried to do erasure suicide, Ayumu must have met up with Izo and Rei who gave back the clothing at that time. But what happened to them before Joshua found them looming over him?
He should ask sometime about that.
It was merely a few minutes later after he got changed and discarded the clothing to a Reaper that seemed charmed by them.
Joshua was annoyed that the Reaper was watching him the whole time; it was awkward getting changed because of that.
As Joshua stretched and looked over his normal choice of clothing in relief he got back to Ayumu, his younger half brother who was shorter than him nodded slowly "Well back."
'Did he mean to say, 'welcome back'?' wondered Joshua before he kept himself moping when Ayumu spoke more without emotion "Building of 104, easy to go to. Right?"
The older half brother didn't reply, it didn't really faze Ayumu (since he is emotionless) as he spun around to face the direction they had to go "Good you are back, almost lost."
This didn't really spark any happiness in him due to the fact there wasn't any emotion present.
So Joshua followed Ayumu until they got to the entranceway to the 104 Building district who had the amber eyed Reaper who guarded it.
Silently he saw the amber eyed Reaper scowl as soon as he caught sight of them, "So, it's you two." Joshua had no urge to tease or respond to him so he just stared at him. Somehow the Reaper noticed this so he narrowed his eyes "Hmpt, today you are quiet. Are you mocking me?!"
"Really not, sorry." replied Ayumu as he tilted his head to one side, "Need to pass. Is there the Wall?"
"No." for sometime the Reaper let out a grunt and some groans while he seemed to keep a steady gaze at him, "Why is blondy so quiet? Speak you odd talkin' kid to why your brother isn't talkin' either!" In a second Joshua saw him adjust his hood to secrete the dark brown hair that was protruding out a trice ago.
Ayumu asked in his hollow voice "Matter really?"
"No." retorted the amber eyed Reaper as he folded his arms and tapped his foot "Feh, I don't care!"
Joshua wanted to leave; maybe he should correspond to Ayumu to inform him of this.
'Can we leave? I don't want him to drag into the question of something personal.' a tone of sulk pierced through his moping.
Ayumu looked at the lavender-eyed boy before looking back at the Reaper "Got going now. Bye now."
They left in quite a hurry leaving the Reaper to only scoff "Players are fools. But those two, are weirdos."
As Joshua and Ayumu finally was out of sight, Joshua sighed "Why did we have to run into him?"
"Talk, good." suddenly said Ayumu looking into his lavender eyes with his pewter, "I...'bout you, 'kay. You need to talk more, too mopey and sulky."
"I know," sighed Joshua in sadness, he held onto his chin as he mused, "It is frustrating being silent, I can't take it."
After a air of silence, Joshua spoke calmly the best he could "Okay… Ayumu, so you said the Noise is in the 104 Building district?"
"Aye." replied Ayumu with a nod of his head as he started to follow Joshua who began to take lead to the district, Ayumu strolled beside him as he mused calmly "I can sense Noise there with powers, it was created by strong Reapers."
'Strong Reapers?'
"There are three ranks for Reapers," explained Mr. Hanekoma as the 10 year old Joshua just sat down with the tea that Sanae strived to make but failed, immediately Joshua's face grimaced as he tried his best to hide a frown from his dad's boss "they are Support, Harrier, and Officer."
Joshua was wearing a pale cyan buttoned t-shirt, with darker azure shorts, and white sneakers.
Once the short black mohawk haired man noticed that Joshua was showing spite to the tea he sighed "Put down the tea if you don't like it, Yoshiya… Tea isn't my asset of brewing."
Joshua gently placed the tea down before pushing it forward in disgust "Please don't call me that, I said before to just call me Joshua, Mr. Hanekoma."
"Back at you Josh," hummed Mr. Hanekoma with a wry smirk, "Sanae is fine. As long as we are friends, you may or must call me Sanae. Your father and other grown ups can call me Mr. Hanekoma, but mostly I want them to call me CAT."
"Why…?" asked the ashen haired boy curiously, Joshua knew that he was always dubbed CAT but he wondered why he would want to be called a neko?
Sanae chuckled and tapped his mug that had the evil tea in it before repeating what Joshua did to his, "Everyone likes a stage name, I am fond towards nekos, while they are called cats in English. Haha, does it matter Josh?"
Joshua chuckled a bit as his lavender eyes sparkled "I guess not Sanae, hehehe…"
Before they could do or say anything else, they heard the chime near the door that signaled a customer had entered. Instead it was a lady with long dirty blonde hair that was tied up in a bun while her long bangs draped over her shoulder, she was wearing a periwinkle and emerald green dress with a dusky brown shawl. Her eyes were pistachio green and sparkling.
Joshua heard Ayumu's mother's name was Chise from his own mother Mizuki.
Beside her was a boy who Joshua knew as his younger half brother, suddenly Ayumu ripped his hand away from his mother and hid behind her shyly while gripping onto her beautiful dress.
Ayumu wore today a pale leaf green and white hoodie without any zippers, along with dark grey shorts and had sneakers that matched his hoodie. Of course, he also wore the Ying-Yang pendant his mother gave him on his last birthday. But Joshua saw it was a bit big for him, it went down to above where his bellybutton would be. The older half brother thought by the time Ayumu was 15 the pendant would be at his chest.
Right away Sanae got up and waved over to them "Ah, hello there Ms. Ki." he strolled over to them until he halted and strained his head to look behind Chise to see Ayumu "And hello there young Ayumu, how are you?"
Ayumu let out a whimper and shyly hid more behind Chise.
For a second Chise glanced down behind her at Ayumu before looking at Sanae "Hello Mr. Hanekoma, your birth star shines brightly down on you." she looked at Joshua with a genuine smile "Oh, your star tells me that your luck has increased for the week Yoshiya, but don't think luck will save your every action."
"Thank you, Auntie Chise." replied Joshua with a small smile.
The dirty blonde haired lady nodded before she looked at Sanae "I'm so sorry to influence your work, but I need someone to look after Ayumu. I have a important patron to tend to, who needs desperate healing of her mind from the dangers to come of her."
The sunglasses Sanae wore were shifted to be more evenly sitting on his face before he smiled "No worries Ms. Ki, Ayumu can have much fun here to learn about coffee beans and the café. It is his second time here."
Chise let out a sigh when she placed her hand gently on her chest where her heart would be "That's a relief, I hate to burden you."
Again the owner of the WildKat Café waved his hand before he mused, "Heh, burdens are not born in this place. It's good to see Ayumu here again, live and well."
At once Chise spun around and went down on one of her knees to be level with Ayumu; she looked into his blind eyes with her own blind eyes "Be good sweetheart, Mr. Hanekoma will be responsible for what happens to you. And please…"
Ayumu started to shyly look at the ground before Chise gave him a hug he returned hastily, "Don't run away from Mr. Hanekoma again, you almost got hit by a car last time. I love you too much for you to die..." she gave him a tender kiss on the forehead before she sighed "Promise?"
The 9 and a half-year-old blond held up a pinkie as soon as Chise stopped hugging him "Pinkie promise?"
Chise held out her pinkie and they entwined them, they both moved their pinkies like in a bounce before Ayumu quietly whimpered "O-Okay Mom…"
As soon as Chise got up to leave Ayumu ran up to her and grabbed onto one of her hands, "Come back safely, I love you too Mom." Chise let out a sigh before petting his head with affection "Alright, sweetheart."
It took a few more minutes until Ayumu was ready to let his mother leave, once the door chime stopped jingling he let out a sigh and looked towards the door blankly.
'Why are you so clingy to people Ayumu?' thought the older half brother in confusion as he gave a glance to Ayumu, 'Do you always need someone by your side? If so, I'll take care of you…'
Joshua went back to his seat that he was sitting in some time ago and Sanae sat from across again, quickly Joshua looked over to his half brother who kept staring at the door "Ayumu, wouldn't it be better if you were within our sights more?"
"You want me to come over, Josh?" asked Ayumu meekly as he quivered a bit.
Joshua didn't want Ayumu to get in trouble with Auntie Chise again, and he wanted Ayumu to stop calling him Josh, "Yep. It's just lonely without you over here."
The blond looked at Sanae before Joshua then started to creep forward.
It was until they heard a 'oof' that they knew Ayumu was with them, Joshua slid off his chair to help his brother who was dazed from hitting the table "Ayumu! Are you alright brother?"
He heard a sniffle from Ayumu, "Ow… T-That hurt Josh…" again he sniffled as Joshua noticed that he was trying to hold in his tears but failed to "That hurt…" The lavender-eyed brother sighed before he looked at Sanae who got up slowly from his seat, "Sanae…"
"Don't worry Josh," murmured Sanae walking over to the counter area, "I'll get some ice for him."
As Sanae went to get ice Joshua tried to calm his younger half brother who wept in pain, "Shh… It's okay Ayu, it's okay Ayu…" he saw the red mark on his forehead that meant that Ayumu had scraped his skin upon hitting the table hard.
Ayumu let out a sniffle "I'm not a girl!"
"I know…" said Joshua as he saw Sanae return "I never said you were either Ayumu…"
Once Ayumu was given the ice he held it to his forehead while he stammered "I-I-It's c-c-cold!"
Joshua chuckled a bit and helped Ayumu onto a chair beside him before he returned again to his own; he stared at Sanae when he asked "So… What sort of ranks are the Reapers for?"
"Well, Support Reapers are the lowest rank." started Sanae as he suddenly took off his sunglasses to reveal his shining dark brown eyes; "They mostly make Walls and obstacles for the Players to endure, especially making the Noise."
"They make 'walls'?" asked Joshua before looking at Ayumu who still held the ice to his injured forehead.
Sanae chuckled a little making Joshua's attention snap back to him "Yeah, the Walls cripple the Player's movements until they are taken down by the Support Reaper who made them. A Player has to complete a challenge from the Reaper to pass."
He looked down at his horrible brewed tea as he went on "Now, the next higher rank is the Harrier Reapers. They sort of are the lackeys to fly around and erase Players when needed to, they get orders from the GM-"
Joshua sat up straighter "Sanae, what's the GM?"
"The GM is the Game Master," replied Sanae with a wave of his hand before he went on in the former discussion "The Harrier Reapers make Noise as well to erase the Players, only when it is the 7th day of the week."
Ayumu suddenly choked on something feverishly, Joshua glanced over to him and widened his eyes with a gasp as he noticed the cup weakly held in his hand "Ayumu! Don't drink that!"
Joshua reached foreword to swiftly snatch the cup out of Ayumu's hand, for a while Ayumu sputtered out the tea until he seemed to purge it out of his mouth. Ayumu's pewter eyes half closed as he whimpered "Th-Th-That was… Gross… Wh-Wh-What was it J-J-Josh, poison?"
"My tea…" replied Sanae in an earnest voice before he hung his head, "I should stick to coffee."
Ayumu gave him a blank stare while he shyly inched closer to Joshua, it seemed that Ayumu was still scared of Sanae.
They put the cup and mug on a different table so Ayumu wouldn't try to drink any of them, in a moment Sanae regained the chat as though that ordeal didn't happen "Finally, the Officer Reapers! Well… they don't really do much, they just work in the headquarters like bees in a hive."
Joshua sighed with relief that they finally finished the topic.
"What were you talking about?"
Both Sanae and Joshua looked at Ayumu, who held his ice to his injured forehead still while expressing confusion marked on his tilted head to the side and frown.
"The Reaper's Game Ayumu." said Sanae with amusement when he gave a look to Joshua, "Didn't your older brother tell you about it yet."
Ayumu shook his head innocently "No. He only says there's dead people fighting weird animals."
Sanae gave Joshua a queer look and Joshua guessed it meant 'what a creative description Josh', the scraggly haired teen shrugged when he mused "That's basically it."
But then again Ayumu spoke but in a less innocent but more of a irritated tone "But it doesn't exist, because it makes no sense!"
Silence fell over them like a thunderclap.
Joshua got annoyed suddenly when he stood up making the seat tip over and land roughly on its side "It does, Ayumu. Right now there is a session of missions going on each day of the week, right outside."
Ayumu crossed his arms as he narrowed his eyes, he whispered in a hiss "I can't sense them or see them, so they don't exist."
With a annoyed sigh Joshua gave Ayumu a scowl "Are you stupid? How can you see, you've always been blind!? That fact will never change!"
A feeling of crossing a scarred line flashed and jabbed into Joshua's mind and heart, he saw Ayumu stare at him blankly when tears started to leak out like a stream. Honestly Joshua felt a twinge of guilt wash over him and he reached his hand out "Ayumu… N-No I didn't mean-"
Before he could apologize Ayumu got out of his chair and ran forward, he pushed down many tables and chairs as he went until Joshua saw him leave his sight when he went behind a nook in the café.
The sound of breaking glass from the tables and chairs made Sanae flinch; his eyes were widened and twitching in disbelief.
He could hear whimpers and sobs clearly through the almost empty café.
Ayumu must have been truly distraught.
Joshua was about to go after him when he felt a hand halt his every movement "Josh, Ayumu needs some time alone. He is telling the truth."
Lavender eyes narrowed when the owner forced the hand off and spun around to face Sanae "Ayumu is speaking lies! I see them, everyday since I was old enough to remember." Sanae's brows lowered in sympathy as Joshua retorted on "You know the Reaper's Game exists as much as I do."
"But does it exist for Ayumu?" the question caught him off guard, "Joshua, the Reaper's Game can be seen by you and me. But for Ayumu, he can never sense it or see it. Unless he becomes a Player to experience it for himself." Joshua kept silent in his rage as Sanae added "Also because… Joshua, you are a special person. You are the only one that I know of who sees the Reaper's Game."
"Josh?"
Joshua stopped as soon as Ayumu spoke and broke the silence; this snapped Joshua out of his maybe not so fond memory.
He turned to Ayumu who tugged on Joshua's white button down shirt before responding "Yeah?"
"The Noise first," said Ayumu as he pointed towards some buildings ahead, "Is over there."
Hope you enjoyed the chapter…
