Chapter 44: Molco Mystery: Part 2:

It didn't take as long as Joshua expected it to. They found the black haired teenager sitting down, hunched over, on a bench nearby some pop vending machines.

As Joshua and Mayu approached him, he merely hummed and didn't look up. But Joshua managed to see he had a grim expression as he stared at his hands, folded together as if praying.

Mayu seemed a bit solicitous as she stood right behind Joshua's shoulder when she watched the guy, but Joshua gave her a reassuring look to comfort her anxiety until he decided to chat with the guy. First he inhaled deeply before he faced him.

"Is it bothering you too much?" asked Joshua solemnly as he blinked his lavender eyes. He didn't move or say anymore, trying to see if the bandana-wearing guy took Joshua's invitation to speak.

Instead of mumbling in woe like Joshua expected him to, the black haired guy hummed again and slowly looked up. His eyes were dead dark brown pools, filled with somberness that took Joshua aback. Joshua could only force himself to stare back, feeling an amiss feeling trickle through him.

It was a while until the person sighed, looking back down promptly. "What's it to ya?"

Joshua managed to keep a straight posture and kept the same expression of solemn. "Well, how you're acting may worry people. It can be considered unhealthy to mope like this when there are more important things to do."

The black haired teen hummed. "Like what?"

"Talking to your brother, that's one." Joshua crossed his arms before putting in more firmly, "For a kid that age, they shouldn't be left alone too long."

"Well, he should grow up then and not act so childish," the dark browned eyed teenager snorted before he blinked slowly. "He shouldn't decide my future, it's my life. Even if I have to slap the reality of it to him."

Joshua balked at once. 'What!?' He bit his lip, narrowing his eyes slightly. 'So, it's something to do with his life's future… and his brother…' The way the teenager spoke about his brother disturbed Joshua.

"He's still a kid," pressed Joshua a bit irritated now. "It's not always easy to explain it to them, you know? He only acts childish because he is a child. You should go back outside and search for him."

"Ya saw that huh?" The teenager seemed unpleased by Joshua; he waved his hand almost like he was shrugging Joshua off. "It's not your concern… I don't need ya scoldin' me like a child, I'm almost 18! So beat it, Snobby Prick!"

Joshua at once scowled at him, disliking how this conversation was going.

Before the teenager was just troubled by the fact his brother ran away, wanted him to understand, and he didn't have any good relationships with his siblings. But now… he acted as though all that was crap and his brother was a nuisance! That was horrible! It was almost as if his depression sank to the bottom of the ocean and was trapped in a whirlpool down there!

It was like… he was consumed in this gloom… But that would only mean…

Joshua widened his eyes in realization. 'Negative Noise! That must be why he's like this!'

The memory of the guy giving up earlier came to mind promptly, and he could only assume that's when a Negative Noise could have possessed him. Joshua hoped he was wrong…

When Mayu gave a frightened whimper, he gazed at her with reassurance again and mouthed to her silently, 'Don't worry, I have an idea.' The black haired girl merely gazed at him fearfully, but she gave a subtle nod only Joshua could notice and smiled weaker than her normal ones.

His brilliant lavender eyes met the nearly 18 year old's again before they narrowed. "Say… we would… but dear, wouldn't it be nicer if you'd… I don't know… tell us your lovely name?" he smirked after that.

"Beat it!" growled the black haired teen.

"We only would…" sang Joshua playfully as he continued to smirk. "With a name and… a request from the both of us…" he waved his hand in the air in a circle. "It's not that hard… hehehe…" He hated acting like this; he understood how this could vex people, including himself. So Joshua wished he would never do this sort of thing ever again. And using that term to describe the teenager revolted Joshua.

"Tatsuya… Dan…" The guy sat there stiffly, he soon asked in a dead tone, "What?"

"Well then… Tatsuya… Why don't you go outside for fresh air?" chirped Joshua brightly as he waved his hand lightly to fan himself. "It is stuffy in here, don't you think?" When the guy hummed again, Joshua added with a giggle, "Once you feel better… come back inside and let's resume this pleasant chat, shall we?"

Tatsuya didn't make a move to get up, nor did he move a single muscle.

Joshua was really hoping that the Negative Noise wasn't compelling Tatsuya to sit and stay. Although… he wondered if the Negative Noise were actually smart enough to do that. It sort of worried him for a second; his plan would fall apart easily if the Negative Noise knew exactly what he was doing…

Soon he stopped pondering when he noticed something: Tatsuya was grimacing slightly now and was a lot paler than the last time Joshua had a good chance to observe him. And he seemed to shiver…

Joshua remembered slightly that Sanae mentioned once that Negative Noise fed on the peoples' Souls through their negativity. He wished this wasn't the case, but he knew how to test for that.

Immediately he grabbed Tatsuya's wrist, but Joshua recoiled his hand in alarm at once. He stepped back, staring at Tatsuya in dread.

Ice cold! Tatsuya was ice cold!

Seeing that it wasn't cold and snowing outside yet, Joshua's suspicions were confirmed.

Sanae told him that if someone in the RG was experiencing a dangerous level of being possessed by Negative Noise, they would be seriously, hazardously freezing cold! Apparently the colder they were, the more the Negative Noise had feasted on their Soul, destroying more of it, thus they were obtaining more influence! The more influence Negative Noise had… the more control they had over their victims! And if they had enough control… the Noise could control them in the RG! Leading them to their own destruction or killing other people living in the RG! Just like puppets, devoid of every speck of Soul and imagination they had once contained...

They had to act fast to save him!

"Oh, you're so cold, Tatsuya!" exclaimed Joshua dramatically and held his other hand to his numb one to transfer heat back. "It's so hot outside that it could help you feel warmer!"

Mayu gawked at him anxiously and baffled, gaping at him with a large frown.

"ME and my friend MAYU can HELP you!" yelled Joshua louder and maybe obnoxiously, "Wouldn't you LIKE to let the SUN grace your BACK with its WONDERFUL RAYS!?"

Tatsuya twitched a little.

"I would THINK so, TATSUYA!"

People started to glare at Joshua in vexation.

"WE should REALLY leave this PLACE!" continued Joshua louder and louder, hating himself for even initiating this in the first place. "WHY ARE YOU IGNORING ME, TATSUYA!? IF YOU WANT ME TO STOP YELLING AT YOU, COME OUTSIDE ALREADY WITH ME! STOP IGNORING ME-"

"That's ENOUGH!" snarled a stout man who slapped his large hand to Joshua's mouth, causing Joshua to cringe on the inside from how dirty it was. "GET OUT! UNTIL you decide to speak in a ORDERLY voice, STAY outside and THINK about this!"

'Stop pressing your hand to my mouth! Yuck! Why doesn't anyone wash their hands!?' Joshua was furious and disgusted as he writhed and kicked, screaming out louder.

Another man grabbed Tatsuya but winced. "Wow! That prissy kid was right! My hands are numb!"

"I don't care!" bellowed the man while dragging Joshua away after clamping his other hand painfully on the ashen blond's other shoulder. "People have already placed complaints on these scamps!"

As Joshua let out muffled screams, freaking out because of having germs against his lips, he writhed in the painful hold as he was hastily dragged out with Tatsuya.

Behind him he could hear whoops and cheers of approval. He even heard a few insults thrown at him as they passed by a growing line of people bordering them.

With one last glance at his Partner, she looked pale and utterly mortified as she stood there watching them be thrown out. Joshua was only grateful that they left Mayu alone…

When Joshua caught sight of Tatsuya, he was struggling with a bizarre gurgled snarl that reminded him of Noise…

Before Joshua knew it the sliding doors hissed open and he was thrown into the air like a sack of spoiled potatoes. "GAH!"

Soon he felt himself crash into the road and rolled for a few seconds, ending up sprawled out as his shoulder was crying in pain and his stomach was ready to shove all of his organs out. All from contacting that horrible, gross, grimy hand!

He coughed a bit, trying to swallow down what wanted to exit his throat. He let his head rest on the ground, feeling bilious. 'I don't know if getting sick was worth this! But at least… I got Tatsuya outside… ugh…'

His new plan worked at least, however… Joshua wouldn't be surprised if he contacted cancer in the end…

Just as he was getting to his feet, his ears caught the sound of doors hissing open and Joshua turned to spot Mayu dashing straight towards him. He raised a hand to wave, but halted tentatively as soon as she halted before him.

Mayu's pretty eyes were full of tears gushing from them…

Joshua instantly wanted to dig a hole and hide in it. Maybe what he had done wasn't the best course of action he realized… Just seeing Mayu like this was bad enough.

So the ashen blond let out a sigh, brushing his hand through his scraggly locks as he bit his lip harder than he normally would.

He messed up… oh how he messed up…

"Why d-did you do that!?" Mayu screeched out hotly, just watching her tears roll down her cheeks seemed to make it harder to look at her to apologize or explain himself. She shook a bit before she went on more in a shriller tone, "I-I-I…" she now sounded more wretched than she was angry, "felt… so embarrassed…" She simply pressed her hands to her reddened face and sobbed.

Joshua's heart ached, and he wanted to just give her a hug and apologize. But… he felt silence would suit this situation more… He knew he deserved the pain of his guilt; he had to let it seep in so that he could think about his future actions around his Partner.

At this time, he wanted to run away and hope the guilt drained away without complaint. But right now, he forced himself to feel the remorse stir around in his heart.

Normally he would think he would shrug it off because he didn't care about what the person would think; yet this time his heart was betraying him. He grew to care about the people around him it would seem…

Suddenly Mayu gave him a wounded expression that he cringed at. 'What have I done…?'

"I… I-I didn't mean…" Mayu started quietly and appalled, covering her mouth as she slowly backed away. She started to whimper and quiver.

'W-What!?' Joshua stared at her wide eyed as he opened his mouth then closed it stupidly. 'M-Mayu…?'

She was about to bolt off when Joshua beat her to it, capturing her wrist.

"W-Where are you going?" he asked her shakily, a bit surprised how weak he sounded. "Wh-Why… Why wouldn't you mean what you said? I-I earned that from you…"

"No! You didn't!" protested Mayu as she looked at him with distraught; she was breathing unsteadily as she shook her head. "N-Not when you are a fantastic person! Someone as handsome and compassionate as you deserves a better Partner than me!"

Joshua dropped her wrist, staring at her numbly. 'Wh-What…? S-She thinks I'm wonderful…? A-And… h-handsome…?' He didn't realize he was blushing deeply and his heart sped up so fast he could hardly tell it was beating.

"I'm too horrible…" she sobbed bitterly as she turned away; gripping onto her short, smoky black hair. She shook her head again, sobbing harder, "T-Too… horribletoo horrible to even be here… I shouldn't be here… shouldn't be here a-at all…"

It took that to snap Joshua out of his daze.

He slowly brought his arms around her to give her an embrace, the best one he could offer.

"You're not a horrible person!" he exclaimed ardently as he held her close, he breathed in deeply then he stressed his next utter, almost breathless, "I wouldn't ask for anyone else to be my Partner! No one!"

"I'm just slowing you down…" she whimpered feebly in a whisper and closed her eyes. "I take too much of your time and attention… I can't do the things you can… nothing…"

"But that makes you different… special…" Joshua murmured steadily with a frown, closing his lavender eyes. "This is just the second day, Mayu… The second day out of seven… It takes a while for anyone to get used to the Reaper's Game… even myself..." He bit his lip before he mumbled, "But, this week's different than last week's... And sometimes, I find myself stressed by each situation we face… Believe me... the Reaper's Game isn't what I used to think it was going to be like..." He shook his head, sighing. "I hardly understand what the Reaper's Game truly is now... It's more confusing than I thought it was supposed to be... horrible... agonizing... painful..."

"Without consideration you dubbed your half-brother's emotions as his Entry Fee. ...When his emotions, were yours." His heart wrenched as the Composer's words taunted him, he tried to not let it show in front of his Partner.

He twitched his lips forcefully into a slight smile. "I hardly know a thing, heh."

"N-No… You know more than me…" quietly said Mayu as she blinked at him now sadly. "E-Everything…"

"Not everything…" Joshua said wryly with a light chuckle. "You always seem to be steps ahead of me… Even though you learn a little about something… you then act, doing the exact, right, thing… at the exact, right, time…"

She didn't respond to what he said, she avoided his gaze.

"Mayu…" Joshua murmured warmly as she still didn't break a word. "You are kind and caring… and you are so observant… I know you aren't the bravest… but you're still resourceful in your own special way… Remember how you suggested that we should come up with our own names for the Noise...? Remember how you supplied us with your notebook and pen…? Remember how you gave us music genres to work with when we named Noise...? Remember how you came up with using a reference for the mission…? Using the map to discover the locations we needed to go…? Checking the text to use it to mark our pamphlet…? It was all of your ideas, Mayu… You're good at being resourceful…" he paused before he said softly, "I… I-I admire that about you… I really do…"

She gasped at him silently, soon closing her eyes a little in gloom. "But… I…" She shook her head, frowning. "No..."

"But I do..." Joshua murmured sadly.

Joshua didn't know why she was refusing his complements about her… she really was all of those things he mentioned. Why wasn't she accepting anything good that he remarked about her? It worried him as to why she thought she was horrible… and it made him feel unhappy inside knowing that Mayu didn't seem to like herself. She was a wonderful person!

"Could I ask you do me a favor?" asked Joshua as he smiled at her. It took a few moments until she nodded slowly. "Trust your Partner…" he said softly and blinked. "And more importantly… trust yourself more…"

Mayu gasped a little, gazing at him in surprise. It seemed like she was unsure about what he asked of her, but she soon gave him her sweet, weak smile. "I-I g-guess… I-I'll try for you, Joshua…"

He giggled a bit before he let go of her, smiling happily, "Don't worry, I'll be right beside you all week long, Partner. You're not alone, got it?"

She suddenly giggled cutely, bringing up her hand to cover her mouth.

The ashen blond instantly frowned, confused as he cocked his head to one side. "H-Huh?"

"I think you're being such a sweetheart, Joshua…" she said continuing to giggle, lowering her hand to reveal a tiny grin. "I-I think you could make anyone feel like they're the most special person in the world…"

Slowly he smiled again as he listened to her delightful giggles, a bit embarrassed now. Yet at the same time…. that made him happy inside.
