We're finally here, the first Chapter in the Cullens' POV for Transitionals: New Moon!
I've been looking forward to this for a long time now.
So let's go ahead and get started.
This chapter is dedicated to my wonderful family who help encourage my writing.
Chapter 1
Carlisle's POV
When Edward and the others had told us that Billy Black wanted to meet with us, I assumed it was to discuss the treaty and what we were doing about Bella's transition. How it might affect the treaty?
The Swans, Anna and Cissy, and our family entered the clearing where we had first met Ephraim Black and his pack.
Billy Black and his fellow tribe members were already waiting for us.
I nodded to Billy and the other elders, then my gaze turned to the three young men. Their scent was enough to prove that they were all wolves. I offered them a brief nod to acknowledge them too. I was hopeful that this meeting would be as civil as the last one had been. It at least seemed that the elders were trying, and two of the wolves.
I knew this situation wasn't any more comfortable for them than it was for us.
"Charlie." Billy turned to his longtime friend.
It was my hope that Charlie's presence would help keep this situation from getting out of hand should something happen.
Charlie nodded back to his friend. "What's going on Billy?"
"Bella, Anna's getting a strong dangerous sensation." Emmett interrupted suddenly.
We all watched anxiously as Emmett handed Anna over to Bella. I fought back the desire to make a list of all the things it could be.
"What's wrong Anna?" Bella asked cautiously.
Anna placed her hand on Bella's cheek, and we waited for Bella to tell us what she felt.
Bella's hand shot out and grasped a hold of Edward's arm, startling us.
This couldn't be good.
"What is it?" Edward demanded to know. He was trying to hide his panic but we all heard it.
Much to our surprise, Anna glanced sheepishly up at him.
"Is everything alright?" The oldest member of the Quileutes asked.
After a glance between Anna and Bella, Charlie decided to explain Anna's power. "Anna has a gift, much like a sixth sense." He turned to Bella then. "Is everything alright?"
"Anna's getting a dangerous sensation coming from one of your kind." Bella's gaze went to the wolves, so did ours.
The tribe members all looked from Anna to the young man standing to the left of the leader.
"You'll have to forgive Paul he's young," Billy told us, while the older man said, "Please forgive Paul, he's young."
The very idea that there were young wolves here worried me. Anna and Cissy were so close if something were to happen… I stopped that thought immediately, refusing to check to see how Edward was taking it. This wasn't a good idea.
It was a struggle to handle things like this, especially the way Bella grew up. All my instincts said to keep Anna and Cissy away from these sort of confrontations, but for Bella, it wasn't a question whether or not the girls could come. It was second nature for them to be there.
I was trying to remember that but it was things like this, dangerous situations that I could at least protect them from, that made me want to handle the situation according to the way I was raised.
My thoughts were interrupted when the wolf at the front placed his hand on Paul's shoulder. "Calm down Paul."
Thankfully Paul did relax for the most part. I was intrigued by what had helped him. Something was obviously keeping him calm.
Sam took a step closer to our group, facing all of us. "Allow me to start off the introductions. I'm Sam, I lead the pack. This is Jared, and Paul, my pack brothers."
We all nodded to them and Sam continued.
"These are the Elders of our trip. Old Quil, Harry Clearwater, and Billy Black."
We once again acknowledged them with a brief nod, all except Anna who waved.
Charlie glanced my way silently asking whether I'd like to do the introductions. Personally, I thought it would be appreciated more by the tribe members if he did the.
Charlie understood and stepped forward.
"You all know me. This is my family. My daughter Bella, and her cousins, Annabelle and Cissiley. And I'm sure you know of the newest members of my family."
Paul growled and started shaking more.
"Get a grip, Paul." The other boy, Jared griped.
It took a little bit but he did calm down enough for Charlie to continue.
"This is the Cullen family. Carlisle and Esme, Emmett and Rosalie, Jasper and Alice, and Edward." He smiled proudly at Edward, and I wasn't able to stop my own.
Billy cleared his throat then. "Now that the introductions are done, we can get down to business."
Finally, we can learn what this is exactly about.
Charlie nodded. "What's going on Billy?"
The elders glanced from one to the other and then turned to me.
As the leader, Billy was the one to explain. "We would like to amend the treaty."
Amend it? An addition or change? For some reason, I had the feeling it wasn't what we had been thinking.
"What exactly would you like to change?" I asked once I had gathered my thoughts.
"Thanks to recent circumstances, we'd like to renegotiate the terms on being on each other's lands."
We had never had any problems with them being on our side of the treaty line, so were they willing to offer us permission to go on their land.
I caught Edward's gaze. Something serious must have caused this. They must be wanting permission for the wolves to be on our land.
Edward nodded.
"We'd be willing to renegotiate." This could be the step we need to build a better relationship with the tribe, maybe even put the prejudice between our two groups to rest.
The three elders silently came to an agreement and Billy glanced to Sam and the other two guys. "There have been some strangers on our lands lately. Sam has tried to follow them but whenever he gets close enough, they cross the boundary line. We'd like permission for the pack to be able to be on your land, in cases where they are following the people we believe to be dangerous to our people."
Strangers in La Push? It would make sense if they were Hunters, by why would they be in La Push if they were here for Bella. She hadn't been to the reservation since the day they asked her not to come back. Whatever the reason there was no other answer to give, it was clear what we should do.
"I can understand the difficulty of your situation, being unable to follow someone your tailing is a problem. I would be willing to allow it, if we can also ask the same from you."
Billy shifted nervously, but determination formed in his eyes. "We have already discussed this among ourselves. We believe that it would be beneficial to both sides. So we are willing to allow it."
I smiled thankfully. "Is there anything else?"
Billy shook his head. "We have nothing else to discuss with your family. I do need to talk with Charlie though." He turned to his best friend.
Charlie spoke up before he could. "The strangers down in La Push, you think they're the people after Bella."
My poor son hissed and tightened his grip around Bella. She tried to comfort him by patting his arm. It didn't help though. He was trying though. Fear for our mates tended to make us all anxious, it was something we all dealt with differently.
"You told us that we would know them when we saw them," Billy explained. "These people don't talk to anyone, all they do is search the area. They don't answer when someone has spoken to them. They can't be bothered."
Charlie sighed. "Those men are hunters," he confirmed my worries.
"Bella hasn't been in La Push though, so why are they there?" Sam fought not to growl, but I knew my family had caught the low sound. I was grateful that the young man was trying to be thoughtful and fight against his nature.
What Charlie said next, I don't think any of us could have guessed. "There must be another transitional creature in La Push."
Paul didn't even try to disguise his anger. "So there's another one of her, around."
Esme and I both shot our five warning glares as they all hissed at Paul.
"Transitional creature, not a transitional. There's a difference. Transitional means you're turning into a vampire, transitional creature means you are turning into a mythical being." Bella snapped back at Paul.
"Bella," Charlie warned sharply.
Bella huffed lightly. "Okay, so it could be a Transitional, but we don't know that."
"Can you be sure that a member of our tribe is a transitional creature?" Old Quil worriedly asked Charlie.
Charlie pulled a sign out of his pocket. I hadn't realized he had been carrying it with him. When had he started doing that?
"What's that?" Harry asked warily.
Charlie showed it to them. "This belonged to my father. I can use it to see if there are any transitional creatures in the area."
He started the sign and we waited.
"Sorry, I have to go through all this information about Bella, before I can scan for any others," Charlie growled lowly.
Sam took a step closure to our group moving so he could see the device. "Is there a lot of information about Bella?"
Charlie's face tightened with annoyance. We all knew that this was hard on him, more so than what it should have been.
Charlie explained how it worked for them. "The sign collects data. It gives the hunters information about what she's turning into, her powers, skills, any sort of extra abilities. What really makes them difficult though, is the fact Hunters that have come in contact with the said transitional creature can upload information they themselves have picked up."
"Things like, how they escaped them, how they used their powers," Charlie explained. He glanced at Edward. "If anyone was helping them."
He shook his head, sighing loudly then. Abruptly the air was caught off though as Charlie gaped at whatever info he was seeing on the device.
What could be wrong now? Hopefully, it wasn't anything too horrible.
"What's wrong?" Bella asked what we were all wanting to know.
A low whistle escaped and Charlie rubbed his chin with his free hand.
Billy urgently begged Charlie for answers. "What is it, Charlie?"
We were all waiting in suspense for only a moment more.
"You do have a transitional creature down in La Push."
"Not a transitional though?" Sam asked hopefully.
Charlie nodded, but he didn't relax his stance. "No, it's not a Transitional, in fact, this creature is one of the more rare ones. That explains partially for why you've seen so many hunters."
"Partially?" Billy questioned. He rolled himself closer with the help of Harry.
"This person is really close to completing their transition." Charlie shrugged. "The closer a person gets to finishing their transition the more Hunters you'll see. Once the transition is complete the hunters leave the person alone. Once the person is completely a mythical being they lost. They leave them in peace. It's part of their strange code they follow."
Really? The more we learn about the Hunters the more despicable they become. Their hunts were becoming more like vicious games they held. Hunt them because they shouldn't be changing but once they have it's alright.
I was glad that for the twisted way of thinking, at least once Bella was a vampire I knew she'd be safe from these monsters, but that was all.
Harry stepped up beside Charlie filling in what was now a tight circle. "So, can you find out who the transitional creature is?"
Much to our surprise, Charlie turned off the sign. "The only information the Hunters have is a signal that points them to La Push. They don't have any other information."
"And that's good, right?" Jared asked thoughtfully.
Charlie put the sign back in his pocket. "Yes, in fact, you're in luck. The signal is weak. That means the transition is past ninety percent. There's a good chance that whoever this is can finish the transition before the Hunters find them. You'll just need to keep chasing the Hunters out of La Push."
That was excellent news, as long as we could keep the Hunters away maybe we could help save another transitional creature.
"Can you track the person with that sign, like the Hunters are doing with their own?" Sam gestured to the sign.
"No, we don't want to use the sign like that. It will send the information we learn and any hunter anywhere would be able to get the information." Charlie warned.
Billy rubbed his temples, I'm sure everything we had discussed was hard on all of them. It was a lot of information for them to take in
"Let me see if I understand. There is someone in our tribe who is turning into a mythical being. A large number of hunters are searching for that person because they are close to finishing the transition and because they are a rare transitional creature. Their signal is weak making it harder for the Hunters to find them. Now we can help them by keeping the Hunters out of the area. Is that everything?"
Charlie nodded. That was basically it after all.
"What type of mythical creature is the person turning into?" Old Quil asked tiredly.
"Ironically, the person is turning into a shapeshifter," Charlie replied, a hint of amusement in his voice. "Transitional creatures that turn into shapeshifters are rather interesting. Their form they turn into is based on the first creature they see. They'll take on all of the same qualities that the original creature has."
Billy didn't find it funny though. "While that is interesting, it doesn't really help us, and we have a more pressing issue to address."
"There is something worse than the Hunters being here?" Emmett stared down Billy.
Billy met Emmett's gaze. "No, this matter still deals with the Hunters." He turned back to Charlie grimly. "If we push the Hunters out of La Push, won't they just go looking for Bella?"
Charlie glanced my way again. We bother knew that we couldn't sit back and risk another person just to protect Bella. We nodded in agreement.
Charlie turned back to his friends. "Keep the Hunters out of La Push, but be careful. If they find out that you're chasing them away from their target, then they won't hesitate to attack. Right now, it sounds like they're just trying to keep you from finding out what they are doing. Right now they have no reason to expose themselves, but like I told you before, they don't follow any rules. They will expose themselves to get to the transitional creature."
Jared groaned. "That will make it harder on us. We can't let anyone know about us; if the people found out they'd freak."
Paul and Sam nodded in agreement. We were all dealing with that same struggle.
"What about Bella?" Harry was trying not to upset us, especially Bella.
"We'll keep an eye on Bella," I promised.
"This sort of situation could actually be good for us," Jasper suggested carefully. "Just think about it. The Hunters have two different people they are after. We can keep pushing them back and forth between our two groups. Every time we push them towards the other person both of our groups have a chance to stop some of them."
"Pick them off one at a time?" Sam thought over Jasper's plan.
It was a good plan, one that I thought we would be able to put in action.
"We might not be able to use the sign to track the transitional creature, but we can use it to track the Hunters. Duke has a friend who used to be a hunter. We could see if he would be willing to let us borrow his sign, that way we have one and you guys can have one," Bella spoke up thoughtfully.
Sam immediately agreed. "What would we do with the Hunters though once we catch them?"
"If we catch them?" Paul glared at Bella, which was only proving to test Edward's control. "They've proven to be hard to catch." He continued, completely ignoring my son's warnings.
Charlie put a stop to their coming fight. "I'll call a friend of mine, he'd be more than willing to help haul in some hunters."
Sam thanked him. "That would be appreciated. It looks like we have a plan." He glanced warily at Paul.
Paul needed to leave, his control was slipping and I could sense it easily just with how the young man was holding himself.
"I'll make the necessary calls and get back to you as soon as I can," Charlie promised Billy, he sensed the need to end this meeting quickly too.
Billy nodded and settled back in his seat. "Thank you all for coming we'll be in touch." He turned to me then. "I will send over the amended treaty for you and your family to sign."
"Thank you." I paused briefly to bid them farewell. We needed to be going. There were too many things that could go wrong if Paul or Edward snapped now.
"Rose, take Anna please," Edward pleaded softly. "I need some time to cool off."
We all saw the stiffness in his shoulders. We understood immediately, Emmett didn't even tease him.
I sighed as I watched Edward leave with Bella.
"Are you okay with the two of them going off this late?" I asked Charlie. It was already getting dark and would be by the time they returned.
Charlie offered a tight smile. "Edward won't put her at risk. Her safety comes first for him. I trust that despite his current struggles he'll be keeping watch for any trouble."
I was sure that was true too.
"Do you got the girls?" Charlie asked.
I turned to see Anna riding on Rose's shoulders, and Cissy content in Esme's arms playing with her hair.
I nodded. "We've got them."
Edward's POV
"Don't you think it might be getting a little dark for the meadow?" Bella asked quietly.
Any other day I would have been glad to hear Bella being cautious about her safety but I needed to be alone, just the two of us. Somewhere we could be alone and I wouldn't have anyone else's thoughts in my head.
I carefully unhooked one of her arms from around my neck, just enough so I could kiss her hand. "Don't worry Bella, I can see just fine in the dark. Besides I needed a place where we could talk privately. I want to ask you something about tonight, and I don't want the others to interrupt us."
I helped her off my back as soon as we arrived.
Before I could ask her my question she stood up on her tiptoes so she could reach my lips. She gave me a quick kiss. "Thank you. Alright, what did you want to ask?"
I led the way to the middle of the meadow where we always sat. "I was wondering about what your dad said, about the Hunters. Once you're a full vampire, they'll leave you alone?"
"Uh huh," she replied quickly. She rested her head against my shoulder. "Then we'll only have to worry about the Undermining." She sighed. "They won't give up."
Very carefully I lifted her chin so she was looking up at me; so we were meeting each other's eyes. I searched her eyes for the answer.
Bella was struggling with more threats to her life then I had ever thought was possible for one person as good as she was. The world was out to get her, and yet one of the major threats to her life could so easily be removed. She'd be free from the Hunters' terror once she was a vampire. She'd be stronger, faster, safer as a vampire.
She blinked up at me and her dark eyes, the lovely melted chocolate seemed to flash.
She wanted to finish the transition, she wanted as much time as she could get to gain more control.
"I love you, Bella. I will always be here for you." I leaned down and kissed her, trying to draw in some of her strength and give her some of mine.
Author's Note
Well, what did you guys think?
Did you like the Cullen's POV? I really hope you did.
So did any of you guess that was what Edward had thought about but decided not to talk about with Bella? Just a heads up they will be talking about it in Transitionals: Eclipse. In fact, it is going to be a reverse conversation from the original Eclipse book. Any guess what scene?
Until next time, look out for Hunters,
