Chapter 3
Edward's POV
"This is your captain speaking. We will be landing in a few minutes, so please fasten your seat belts," Duke chuckled quietly to himself as he always did after telling us to buckle up. He always found it funny to tell us vampires the normal safety instructions. It didn't matter after all whether or not we did or not. We always did though because it was the human thing to do.
I wasn't thrilled having Duke fly us around but Bella was dealing with more business trips now that we were out of school for the summer.
We knew that Duke hadn't been in Toby's safe house with us, but there wasn't any proof that he wasn't the traitor. Everyone who knew about Toby's secret safe house needed to be seen as a possible traitor, and I knew that Bella was going to have a hard time with that. It wasn't easy for me to think that Duke was the traitor, purely because I didn't want to endure the pain it would put Bella and Anna through. I couldn't let my guard down though.
Everyone waiting for us are exactly who they say they are. Alice showed me the outcome of the questions who could ask everyone to be sure that they were really who they said they were. It was nice that we wouldn't have to take the time to actually question them, especially since there would be normal humans around and it would look strange to them.
Having a sister who was psychic was definitely handy.
As always Duke landed the plane as effortlessly as any pilot with three times his years of experience. Once we were stopped at our gate and joined us. "So, who are we expecting outside?" He asked.
I couldn't help smiling when I heard Bella laugh quietly beside me. Despite the fact that Alice always checked the future to skip ahead of the conversations, Duke always asked. He knew very well that if Alice saw anything that we needed to worry about she'd tell Duke to keep flying.
"Just the rest of our family, and before you ask, yes they are all who they say they are." Alice smirked at Duke, all too proud of her powers.
Duke nodded before opening the doors.
It didn't take me long to find the others. Their thoughts were always easy to pick out.
Rose let go of Anna's hand and she ran straight for Bella.
Bella lifted Anna into her arms. "I missed you, Anna." As she gave Anna a quick kiss on the cheek I could see just how much Bella missed her. She had done a good job hiding it while she was away, but I knew Bella still struggled being away from Anna for any length of time. The two of them were trying to handle their anxieties but it would take some time before they were truly alright being away from each other. It was why these smaller trips were nice, they were the building blocks we were using.
Anna gave Bella a kiss in return. "I missed you too Auntie Bella."
"Well, what did you think of Ithaca?" Carlisle asked after giving me a hug.
"It seems like a nice place that would work for us."
He nodded and went to get a hug from Bella.
We headed for the cars, Jasper, Duke and I carrying the bags.
I smiled at the sight of my Volvo beside Bella's or as Anna calls it, her car.
I call driving Bella's car, Jasper shot my way.
I sighed but nodded. It used to be that no one but me drove my car, and now my car was hardly ever driven, and when it was, I usually wasn't the one behind the wheel.
I put our bags in the trunk while Bella buckled Anna into her seat.
"Auntie, did you bring me anything?"
I chuckled. Bella always made a point of bringing something small for Anna whenever she came back from a business trip, it was something Toby always did, so Bella was doing that too. She had cute little stuffed bears for Anna and Cissy.
To my surprise, Anna and Cissy weren't the only ones with a surprise.
I glanced over at Alice. She had tried to keep it from me, and I only got a glimpse but I had seen enough. I couldn't believe that I had missed being able to help make the Swan house bigger. I would have loved to help them with it, maybe add a music room so I could buy Anna a piano of her own. I knew Bella would never let me get her a piano, but she couldn't stop me from getting one for Anna.
"You will have to wait until we get back home," Bella told her.
I got in the car not wanting to give it away since I knew that Bella had figured out that something was up.
"Edward, what's going on?"
I knew she would ask, so I gave her a smile then turned back to the road. "It's a surprise, Bella. I wouldn't even know about it if Alice hadn't have slipped when Anna asked if you had anything for her."
"Alice was the one to slip, you didn't get the surprise from Anna?" Bella asked surprised.
I couldn't help the grimace. "No, Rose has been teaching Anna how to block her thoughts from me."
"You think that's funny?" Of course, she thought it was funny, I wasn't sure why I had even asked that.
A thought came to me I grinned. I reached out with my right hand and started tickling her before she could stop me.
She shrieked and tried to escape my hand by pushing up against the door.
I laughed and stretched towards her. Naturally, I didn't have to worry about the car swerving. I kept it centered between the lane's lines.
Edward, you're freaking out Anna. She thinks you're going to crash the car, Jasper hissed warningly.
I immediately stopped tickling Bella. I didn't want to worry Anna. Just to show my dedication to relieving Anna's concerns I placed my hands at two and ten, as instructed by most driving schools.
Bella glanced at me curiously.
"Anna was getting worried," I told her.
I fought back a grin, not wanting to give the surprise away, as I headed for Bella's house instead of my own.
I didn't have to wait long for Bella's reaction.
"What happened to my house?!" She turned to me, but remembered that I hadn't been involved in this adventure.
I smiled back at her.
"I doubt you'll be smiling when Charlie sees this," She warned.
Did she really think that we would remodel her house without Charlie's permission? "Charlie already knows Bella. It was his idea actually."
Charlie chose that moment to come outside. He had been waiting excitedly for us to arrive. He ran to Bella's side and opened the door for her. "Welcome home Bella."
I got and watched their greeting.
Alice stepped up to Bella's side. "I can't wait for you to see your closet, Bella." She finally let me back into her thoughts and I was able to see just how much they had all been keeping from me over the weekend.
We walked through the house and I couldn't help wishing I had been part of the build. It would have been fun, and I really wish I had met Charlie's friends.
Esme had done a great job with the design. I could see the different places where she had worked with Anna. This house was definitely more functional now for the four of them.
Charlie proudly led us through the main floor before taking us upstairs. I was looking forward to seeing what Esme had done with Bella's room, but I currently couldn't see how anything could top Bella's study and the connected playroom for the girls.
As soon as Alice had gotten Bella into her room she went straight to the close. "Here it is Bella, your new closet." She threw open the doors and let Bella walk in.
I stayed safely out of the way only to be surprised that the room was empty.
"Alice there's no clothes in here," Bella gasped.
Emmett snorted. "Now she's done it."
Yes she had. Alice's thoughts were everywhere thinking about the shopping trip she was going to drag Bella on. They were going to be gone for the rest of the day.
"Don't worry Bella, we're going shopping today and we'll fill this up." Alice hurried Bella through the rest of the tour. She barely gave Bella enough time to thank everyone for all the work they had done.
I shook my head as Alice ushered Bella out of the house.
Charlie clapped me on my back. "Glad to have you back, son." He nodded to my brothers and Carlisle. "I've got to get to the station."
Carlisle led the way back to our house and the four of us sat in the living room.
"Well, was there any excitement?" Emmett begged to know.
Jasper shook his head. "Everything went well. No trouble at all."
Emmett crossed his arms in front of him. "So are we going to move there next, while Edward and Bella are in Alaska?
I couldn't help smiling at that. "We don't need to go to Alaska, after all.
My family's surprise only caused my smile to widen. "Bella told me that because of the transition and the time building towards becoming a vampire, she'll have nearly a decade's worth of control. She won't need to hide away for her first few years."
"That should help, what with the fact she's supposed to be stronger than normal newborns." Jasper met my gaze. "It'll be good to know that Bella shouldn't have too much trouble being near Anna and Cissy."
Emmett snorted. "Just because she has control doesn't mean she'll have an easy time. I already know that Rosie is going to be super protective. She won't want to let Bella near the girls."
That was the truth. Rose was protective of the girls even before she found out she was their great aunt. That didn't change the fact that Bella had legal claim over the girls.
"We will cross that bridge once we come to it." Carlisle's tone was an instant warning to listen carefully. "We won't take any chances with Bella and the girls, but it will be their decisions on when they will test Bella's control. I for one will enforce that. If Anna and Bella say it's alright, I won't let anyone get between them."
I was glad to know that Carlisle would support Bella in this. I knew that things were different now that we knew Emmett and Rose were family to Anna and Cissy. Bella wasn't as sure about the way she was handling things. She wanted to let Rose and Emmett have more of a say, but she also wanted to raise the girls the way they would if they were in the other world.
There were so many differences in our ways of life and it was difficult to find a suitable balance. It was frustrating not only Bella but Rose too.
I sat and listened to Emmett and Carlisle talk about Charlie's friends and the build. They both talked fondly of how Anna had worked diligently with Esme and Rose to finish the house this morning.
Watching little Anna run around the house placing last-minute finishes in their thoughts was sweet. Anna fit into our family effortlessly. I was looking forward to seeing how well Cissy merged with her family as she continued to grow.
The hours passed leisurely and I soon found myself being called back to Charlie's by Esme.
I bid my brothers and Carlisle good night and ran to the Swan house. Esme was just pulling into the drive as I stopped in the trees just outside Bella's yard.
"She fell asleep just a little while ago, but I doubt she'll wake," I heard Esme tell Charlie.
Charlie chuckled softly. "From what I can tell I'll be able to get her in bed without waking her. Thanks for all you and your family's done for us, Esme."
I watched as Esme offered a gentle smile. "It was our pleasure. We consider all of you, our family."
Charlie nodded in agreement before carrying Bella inside.
I waited until Charlie had left before climbing up the tree that was still conveniently beside Bella's window. I laid down beside Bella, holding her in my arms.
This was what home felt like, and now that I knew this feeling I was going to make sure I never lost it. I could never have asked for a better soul mate.
