Lux abruptly made her way over towards the entrance of the school. But unfortunately, not without going unnoticed.
"Excuse me," Lena stopped one of her colleague's before beginning to follow Lux, who she found suspiciously leaving all of a sudden.
"Good morning, Lena," Timothy stopped her in her tracks…
Lux knew she had to come up with something and she had to do it quick. She had to come up with a reason why she couldn't go to school here anymore. It had to be a really good reason too. But what on earth would be a good enough reason for Stef? she wondered.
There wouldn't be one.
She was going to have to go around her mother and she knew just exactly whom she had to convince.
Mike.
He was the only one who would take her side on this. That she was sure of.
She ran her finger through her contacts and pressed his name hard on her phone before bringing it up to her ear. As soon as she glanced upwards her mouth opened slightly at the blue-eyed man in front of her, who had a more surprised look on his own face when he saw her.
Crap, she thought to herself.
Eric tried to process any valid reason why his girlfriend could've been there at first, but the crossover bag hanging off of Lux's shoulder made the situation clear enough.
But still, he was in awe. "Lux…"
She hung up the phone and shoved it back into her pocket. The teen hadn't thought she would have to explain everything to him in this way, or even this soon. Everything had been going almost perfect with them since the day they met, and she knew she should've told him the truth sooner. But the truth was, she hadn't wanted to ruin any of it by telling him she was still technically… a teenager.
"What–" his mouth opened again, though he paused when he realized he didn't know how or where to begin.
The school bell rang, bringing them both to an awkward silence, a silence that was only interrupted by another's voice.
"Lux, what are you" Lena stopped walking over to her when she got a glimpse of Eric, who was still standing in front of them. Lux took in a deep breath and gazed away from both Lena and Eric. "Good morning Eric," Lena smiled before she looked over at Lux in confusion and then back at Eric. "How are you?"
Eric turned his eyes toward Lux quickly and then immediately back towards Lena. "I'm fine, thank you. I didn't realize just how much traffic I'd run into on the way here. I'm sorry for this."
"No worries," she shook her head and glanced at Lux. "You'll get used to it," she answered before turning to face him again. "And I see you've meet one of my children already," she gestured toward Lux, who sucked in another breath and pressed her teeth together.
Why? Lux thought to herself. Why did she have to keep talking?
Eric, who was obviously caught completely off guard by this new revelation, fumbled with his next words. "Your-She's your… Yes," he tried to control his nervousness. "I guess I have."
"Actually, two of my daughters are in your first period, including Lux so that should be interesting," she tried to convince.
"Oh, wow," Eric couldn't hide his discontentment with how this was all going.
Lena found his reaction a little strange and he could tell he should do a better job of hiding it by her furrowed eyebrows.
"I mean," he tried to correct and appear more unfazed by all of this, "I guess I'm just a little more nervous about my first day than I thought I'd be."
"Well, don't worry," Lena accepted his explanation. "These students are hardly problematic. And if anyone gives you any issues, just send them to my office."
"Duly noted," Eric responded.
"You can pick up your rosters from Mrs. Gilbert. Do you know where she is?" Lena questioned.
"Yes, I do, thank you. You know, I should go and…" Eric paused as he pointed toward the school, stressing to them that he was already late.
"Of course," the woman smiled again just before Eric began walking away from the two of them.
Lux watched as Eric moved closer towards the building. What she would do to be able to read his mind at this point in time.
And Lena!
God! Did she have to come out? Make it sound like I was really her kid? She couldn't just stay IN the school like the vice principal was supposed to on the first day? She should've been too busy to notice me leave.
And of course she was still there just waiting for her…
"May I ask where were you going?" Lena tried to sound calm even though the extreme confusion was evident in her eyes.
Lux stared back at Lena as if it weren't a big deal. "I felt sick. I was just going back to the house," she voiced sternly as if it weren't really any of the woman's business to be asking.
"Okay," Lena tried not to let Lux get to her and decided to remain collected instead. She figured that there could have been a possibility that she was actually sick. "Why didn't you come to me?"
The teen scrunched her forehead and looked over at Lena strangely. Why would I come to you? she wanted to ask.
The brunette nodded as if she already understood what the girl wanted to say. "Okay, Lux. Come with me, please?"
Lux rolled her eyes. "I'd rather just walk. It's not that far."
"If you're not feeling well, I'd rather you didn't. I'm just going to call your mom to come and get you. She hasn't left for work yet so I'm sure it'll be fine," the older woman continued.
Lux took in a deep breath when she realized that Lena wasn't going to give up. Her relentlessness was beginning to get very annoying, especially when all Lux wanted to do was get as far away from the school as possible at this point… and Lena wanted to bring her right back in.
"Fine," the teen answered as unenthusiastically as she could as walked back toward the school doors.
Lena closed her office door behind the both of them and watched as Lux plopped herself down on the spare seat. "So…" Lena began, "What hurts?" she asked the girl before walking over toward her side of the desk and reaching for the phone.
"My head," Lux continued in a smart tone. And it was beginning to be true with everything that was going on up to this point. Her head was pounding, along with her heart. "And I feel like I have to through up," Lux lied.
Lena reached over and pressed the back of her hand towards the blonde's forehead, something that immediately made Lux want to back away but she didn't want to make it seem as if she was lying. "You don't feel warm," the woman told her. "Could it be nerves?" she questioned Lux as she began dialing Stef's number.
"Why would I be nervous?"
"Oh, because it's the first day. It's not uncommon for students to–"
"No," Lux interrupted.
I should just leave my answers short. It would give Lena a lot less to say too, the blonde rationalized.
Lena began talking into the phone, "Honey, it's me. I'm here with Lux. She isn't feeling well. Do you think you could–"
"What's wrong?" Stef stopped her.
"She uh… she has a headache and is feeling nauseous."
"But I don't understand," the blonde answered truthfully. "She just left the house a few minutes ago and she seemed fine."
Lena remained silent on the line. It was obvious that she hadn't wanted to say the wrong thing in front of Lux.
Stef understood why Lena wasn't saying much. "Alright. Sure, I'll be right there…"
