Two weeks later
"Hey," Lux heard a guy's voice whisper into her ear as she stood by her locker, grabbing hold of her textbook for Chemistry. She looked up and made an uncomfortable expression towards him. He was tall and had ruffled light brown hair with a very pale complexion. But it was the fact that she had no clue who he was which bothered her.
"Hey," she answered simply in hopes that the conversation would come to an end soon after that. He leaned his body against the locker next to her.
"Lux, right?" He asked with a smile.
He definitely had no intention of going away.
"That's what they call me," she said matter-of-factly as she closed her locker shut and stared at him. "Do I know you?" She asked, not caring if it seemed rude or not. The truth was she wasn't sure if she'd seen him before. He could've sat right next to her in all of her classes and she wouldn't have been able to pick him out of a line up even if she tried.
"Nope," he answered. "But I know you. You're Mariana's sister, right?" He asked.
"Uh, I guess," she answered skeptically, completely unsure of where this was going.
"Good. Well my name's James," he said as he put his hand out to shake.
Lux just stared at him as if it was the oddest thing he could've done.
"Well, here," he said as he gave up and handed Lux a green flyer.
Lux grabbed it from him and scanned it quickly. "Oh, a party," she said casually as if she understood his weirdness now.
"Yeah, uh… me and a couple of my friends are throwing it tonight. I was wondering if you could give that to Mariana."
Lux stared at him blankly.
"I'm just kidding," he laughed. It's for you and Mariana anddddd... the other one. And any other hot friends you can bring. Just not your mom," James added. "The last thing we need is her finding out."
"Not my mom," Lux pointed out. "Just my mom's wife."
James furrowed his eyebrows and stared at her for a short time before replying, "Yeah, whatever," he answered, obviously not caring about something that felt like a delicate situation.
Lena turned on the ignition and began reversing out of the parking space of the parking lot. "How was your first week, guys?" Lena asked.
"Good," Jesus answered.
"Awesome," Mariana smiled. "I joined like 4 clubs including the debate team, the Spanish club, volunteer club, and the dance team if you count that as a club. It's going to look so good for my college applications."
Jesus chuckled, "because Yale really thinks highly of girls jumping around in short-shorts and heels."
"Their wedges," Mariana corrected immediately. "Like I'd ever wear high-heels to a school that's on the beach… Like, hello? I would get sand all over them and they'd be ruined. Come 'on Jesus."
"Whatever." He replied.
"What about the rest of you? Have you decided on what extracurriculars you're all going to be a part of?."
"I was thinking of joining the photography club," Callie replied. "They're not meeting until next week but it seems interesting. Or maybe even the school newspaper. I might be able to take some pictures for it."
"That's a great idea," Lena smiled, impressed by Callie willingness to get involved.
"Well I'm doing wrestling. That's enough for me," Jesus answered casually.
"Whatever you feel comfortable with, Jesus. Just as long as it doesn't interfere with school."
"What about you, Lux?" Lena asked. "Have you given any thought to any clubs or activities for college?"
"Sure," the blonde answered. "Actually, I was thinking of starting my own club."
Callie and Mariana both turned to stare at the young blonde.
"You want to do what?" Callie asked.
"Start my own club," Lux answered casually. It was too casually. "Yeah, I thought I'd call it the IDC club."
Mariana rolled her eyes when she realized what her sister was getting at. "Oh," she answered simply.
"IDC?" Lena repeated in confusion as she attempted to think about what it could stand for.
"Don't bother," Callie mumbled next to her to get her mother to drop the subject.
"I'd call it the I-Don't-Care-Club. It'll be great because you see, it wouldn't even be a requirement to show up because the students would actually be doing exactly what they're supposed to be doing. Not caring. It's going to be big." Lux fake smiled.
Lena appeared less than impressed as she sucked in a deep breath. "I'm sure it would look great on your college applications," the woman said sarcastically.
"Yeah," the blonde smiled. "As if I'm actually going to college."
Lux turned her attention to her backpack where she pulled out the flyer she was given earlier and handed it to Mariana.
Mariana's eyebrows rose with interest at the neon green paper.
"Well of course you're going to college," Lena confirmed as if anything else was surely out of the question. "Why would you not want to go to college?" she continued to question her.
"It starts at 9:30," Lux told Mariana.
"It starts at that time?" Mariana reiterated.
Lux nodded. "I think we should go," she whispered.
Mariana stared at the flyer as she considered the time. If the party was just starting at 9:30 and their curfew was at 10:30, they would only be there for an hour.
"It starts too late," the Latin girl said softly. "It doesn't make any sense to go."
"Lux?" Lena asked.
"Huh?" the blonde said.
"Why wouldn't you want to go to college?" Lena asked as she stared at her in the rearview mirror.
"Because I hate school," she answered honestly.
Hate, Lena repeated in her mind. How can someone actually hate school?
"I'm sure you don't hate it," the woman corrected. "You just haven't found a subject that interests you enough."
"I hate everything school related," the girl answered so that she could get Lena to understand better. "And mom didn't go to school either so?"
Lena froze for more than a few seconds as she tried to think of a comeback. Unfortunately, one didn't come to mind fast enough…
