Chapter 50
"She said she didn't want to go to college?" Stef repeated as she made a face. The blonde pulled back the comforter of the bed so that she could get in.
"She said she hated school and everything school related. That she has no plan on going to college," Lena reiterated.
Stef huffed as she placed her back on the pillow against the headboard of the bed and grabbed her kindle.
"Well, maybe it's just a stage or something?"
"I don't think it is," Lena answered.
"I mean school isn't for everyone. I didn't go to school."
"You went to an academy, Stef. It's not like you decided not to do anything with your life."
"I'm just saying, maybe it's not the end of the world. We need to let our kids make their own decisions."
"Why aren't you with me on this?"
"What do you mean?" Stef asked in confusion.
"Lux just said she didn't want to go to college and you're acting as if it's no big deal… Would you feel the same way if it were Brandon or Mariana or Jesus?"
"That's different. They've been going to school since forever. Mariana gets straight A's, Jesus works very hard to do well, and Brandon wants to go to Julliard. Callie is interested in going to art school. Lux… doesn't care for any of that. She's like me when I was a kid."
"You didn't care about school?"
Stef smiled as she tried to draw her wife back into bed. "I'm sorry to break it to you but no I did not. I barely passed my classes. I'm surprised I even graduated. If it weren't for those smart kids I sat next to, who would let me cheat off them, I would probably still be there," she laughed.
Lena made a straight face. "Stef, you know I don't think this is funny."
Stef kissed her wife on her forehead from fear of her wife rejecting a kiss on her lips right now. "I'm sorry. I know how much education means to you."
"So what are we going to do about it?" Lena asked.
"What can we do about it?" Stef asked. "Lux is really stubborn. It's hard enough to make her go to bed before midnight. We can't exactly force her to go to college."
"Just talk to her. Get more information out of her on why she doesn't like school? Or what subjects it is that she does like?"
"Honey, I think you should be the one to talk to her. You're the one that says that she barely speaks to you. Maybe this'll be something you two can talk about. Talking about this with her might be a good thing."
"Are you sure about that?"
"Why wouldn't it be?" the blonde asked.
"I don't know," Lena lied. She honestly thought bringing up the subject might push Lux further away but she didn't want to tell her wife that.
"Just try, my love."
Lena nodded and hoped the her wife was right.
Lux filled her plastic red cup with beer from the keg and when she turned around she found Mariana staring at her.
"Callie said no drinking, remember?"
Lux looked around. "I don't see Callie here, do you?"
Mariana felt uncomfortable and nervous. "We promised."
"But promises are meant for breaking," Lux complained. "Come' on, Mariana. You need to loosen up," she said as she took a huge gulp of her beer. "Besides, Callie's not the boss of me."
"She said she'd tell moms we snuck out if either of us came home drunk."
"Oh please. I can take her," Lux said as she took another huge gulp of her beer. "I need this. And besides, it's a party. Loosen up. Don't be such a debby downer."
"I'm not," Mariana snapped.
"Then prove it," Lux answered as she filled another red cup up all the way and then filled hers up again. She handed one to Mariana. "I bet I can drink this faster than you."
"I'm not racing you," the brunette said.
"What afraid you'll lose?" Luxe smiled.
Mariana squinted her eyes at her. She was too competitive and wanted too badly to prove Lux wrong. She didn't always do everything that Callie said.
"Fine. Just one drink," Mariana finished.
