Garnet does not lose.
It's more than a fact – her penchant for winning has turned the statement into a universal truth of life.
Ruby despises losing, even more than she likes winning. And Sapphire always wins, except in the rare occasion when her better half might be involved. Together they make up Garnet – who always wins and hates losing.
Garnet doesn't lose in anything. She carried the most, she ran the fastest, she was the strongest in everything she did. No one was immune to her winning.
Not Pearl. Not Amethyst. Not Greg. Not even Rose.
There was only one formidable opponent who she had yet to win against.
And his name was…Steven Universe.
Yes. Garnet, the leader of the crystal gems, couldn't beat Steven. A three-year-old human.
It wasn't that she couldn't. Steven was only a toddler, it would be more than easy enough for her to win. Steven barely has enough motor function to get a spoon cleanly to his mouth, let alone enough to walk in a straight line without tripping.
Rather, she doesn't want to. It's the strangest feeling. She usually always wants to win. Sometimes the need drives her to obsession – a mindless state where she can't see past her sole objective.
But with Steven she loses all the time.
Really, she can't lose.
Even when she loses, Steven's smiles are her prize.
And that's better than winning any day, hands down.
