Chapter 6- Slytherin
There were no cheers. There were no whispers. The entire castle was in shock. Harry couldn't take it. He pulled the sorting hat off his head threw it on the ground and his instinct took over, he fled from the hall. Harry didn't stop running until he reached an empty classroom a few floors up. Panting and terrified, reality started to hit him.
He had done it. He had asked for a resorting, and it had put him in Slytherin. What was he going to do? He couldn't be in Slytherin. Shame washed over him, he wanted to break down and cry. Wake up from this nightmare and find himself back at Grimmauld Place, perhaps the day hadn't even started yet. Perhaps this is all a twisted dream, he hadn't done yet.
Your destiny awaits… what the hell does that even mean? Pacing back and forth, Harry glanced down at his chest, the seal of Gryffindor still on his robes, he felt like he was in someone else's body. He wasn't here at all. It can't be…
The door to the classroom opened and Harry was pulled from himself. It was Professor McGonagall. "Come with me, Mr. Potter." She didn't sound angry but there was no arguing with her tone. Harry nodded and then proceeded to follow her. Harry wasn't paying any attention to where they were going but once he saw the gargoyle statue, he knew where he was going, and the dread started to kick in. How was he going to explain himself?
McGonagall walked in first and Harry was a few paces behind her. Dumbledore was sitting at his desk with his hands folded in front of him, a small sad smile greeted Harry, and he nodded at the chair in front of his desk. Harry took the hint and sat down, and he noticed that it wasn't only the head of Gryffindor in the room. Snape was standing in the corner with his arms crossed looking impassive. Perhaps this was his reaction to downright shock of having Harry Potter put in his house. McGonagall sat in the chair next to Harry.
"Harry," Dumbledore began, "I must confess I'm rather stunned. Do you wish to tell me where this idea of resorting came to you from?" It was bold. Dumbledore knew that Harry wouldn't have come up with this on his own. Remembering that there were two accomplished legilimens in the room, Harry proceeded with caution. He wouldn't let them know where this had come from. Thinking only of what had happened between him and the sorting hat and staring hard at Dumbledore's desk he replied, "No, Sir."
"Enough of this!" Snape had made himself known, "Potter, surely you don't want to be in Slytherin? Headmaster, he is doing this for attention! To make a mockery of this school and of…"
"I was supposed to be in Slytherin," Harry had interrupted Snape before he could get on his rampage. He turned to look at Snape and black eyes met green. "The sorting hat wanted to put me in Slytherin in my first year, but I told it 'no'. I didn't want to be in Slytherin, then. I wanted to know if I had made a mistake, so that's why I decided to…" Harry turned back to staring at the desk. He couldn't go on. He would break down if he put anymore thought into what has happened tonight.
"Well Potter, it is your lucky day." Harry looked back at him, "The headmaster has agreed to allow you to remain in Gryffindor." Snape sneered at him.
Harry turned now towards Professor Dumbledore, who spoke, "If you wish to remain in Gryffindor, Harry, I shall allow it. We would call it a condition of safety as to override the sorting hat's decision, but Harry it is your decision."
Silence.
"Thank you, Professor Dumbledore." Harry said earnestly, "but… I will stay in Slytherin."
There was another pause. "Well," it was Professor McGonagall, "Severus, I will send over Mr. Potter's school file tonight for your records, along with his O.W.L. results." She turned to Harry and gave him a small sad smile, "Well Mr. Potter, I hope to see you in transfiguration this term. Goodnight Severus. Headmaster." She left, and Harry watched her go. He looked up as his eyes met Snape's. Snape was looking at him as if he had never seen something so peculiar in his entire life, his Occlumency skills seemed to be failing him right now.
Dumbledore spoke as Harry turned back around to face him, "Professor Snape, as your new head of house, will escort you to your common room as soon as you have finished eating." Sandwiches appeared before the desk along with a jug of what Harry assumed was pumpkin juice. However, Harry didn't have any appetite. He shook his head, "I'm not hungry Professor, thank you, I'd like to go now if that's okay with Professor Snape?" He turned to look at Snape who still appeared to be lost in his thoughts. Snape nodded at him, and Harry took it as a good sign that Snape hadn't drawn his wand and cursed him right there for being a Slytherin.
Harry stood up and proceeded to follow his new head of house out the door when, "Wait just a minute." Snape and Harry turned on the spot. Dumbledore raised his wand pointing it at Harry's chest. Harry didn't have to look down to know that the Gryffindor lion had been replaced with the serpent of Slytherin. "There. Off you go now!" Snape's hand was still on the door and he and Harry starred at each other before Snape's eyes lingered over the Slytherin crest and then back up to Harry's eyes. Snape's eyebrow raised, "After you, Mr. Potter," he opened the door and with Snape just steps behind him, Harry started to make his way towards the dungeons where he knew the Slytherin common room to be.
Snape grabbed his arm as Harry attempted to turn towards the staircases leading towards the dungeons. Harry turned to look at him, yanking his arm from his hold. "No, Potter, we are not going to the common room just yet. Though I would love to hear about how you know exactly which direction to go. We are going to my office, first, we need to have a little chat."
Harry just glared at Snape then said with as much dignity as he could muster, "If you wish, Professor."
Harry followed Snape down the hall towards Snape's office. Harry hadn't been there since last year when Snape had proceeded to throw him out after the disastrous Occlumency lessons. Harry had no desire to ever visit Snape's office again, but of course Harry had no choice in the matter. To Harry's dismay, the office was identical to the last time he had been there. Snape went and sat behind his desk and pointed at the stool in front of it to Harry, indicating Harry to sit. He did so.
"Now then, as I am now your head of house it is my responsibility to look after your education as well as your well-being. Therefore," He waved his wand and the sandwiches and pumpkin juice Harry had just declined only ten minutes prior in Dumbledore's office reappeared, "You will eat your dinner. I will not have you sneaking out all night to the kitchens and losing Slytherin points on the school's first night back."
"I'm not hungry," Harry glared at him, "I've lost my appetite, Sir."
"Too bad. Eat!" Realizing this might get him out of Snape's office quicker Harry took a small bite of one of the sandwiches.
"While you're eating your dinner, I will be talking, and you will be listening." Snape was looking at him with the upmost disgust. "Now that you're a Slytherin, you will behave yourself as such. I do not want to hear about multiple detentions and deduction of points for reckless, careless, or idiotic decisions that you chose to make each year here at this school."
It took everything Harry had not to tell Snape that it was usually him that gave him detentions and deducted points. Would this change now that he was one of Snape's own?
"Furthermore, this change of house, is permanent. There is no going back from here so for the next two years I except you to show some respect to myself and your new housemates."
"I usually don't react unless someone does something to me first, Professor." Harry finished his sandwich and picked up the juice sipping it. Eat quickly and you can go to bed and try and determine if you're still dreaming or if this is actual reality.
"I disagree. However, you will remember Potter that while your actions have no expelled you in the past due to other's decisions, as your head of house, it is now happy decision. So should you step out of line, you will be on the train home that night. Do I make myself clear?"
"Yes."
"Yes, what."
"Yes, Professor Snape." Harry hated him. Even as a Slytherin, Snape was going to make his life hell.
"Can I go now? Professor?"
"Do you know the way to the common room?" Snape's tone was every bit condescending.
Harry felt bolder than he should have. "Yes, Sir."
Snape gave him a calculated look, "And how would you know that Potter?"
Harry smirked, "You weren't my head of house then Professor, so I'm not sure that's any of your business."
Snape looked ready to curse him, he leaned over his desk and put his face inches from Harry's, "You will do well to remember that you are my business now Potter. The password is 'Mortuum', I'm sure Urquhart will be looking to speak with you in the coming week. We're going to have more talks soon, Potter, about your future career. You are dismissed."
Harry didn't need telling twice, anything to get out of Snape's office as quickly as possible. Harry stood up and took off out the door, not sparing another word to the potions master.

He was almost to the Slytherin common room when Ron and Hermione came out from behind a statue. Harry's heart sank, he couldn't even look at them.
"Harry, what the hell mate? What have you done?" Ron face was that of every bit disbelief.
"Harry," Hermione looked on the verge of tears, "Is this why you asked to borrow my copy of Hogwarts a History this summer? Because you planned to be resorted?"
"Yes." Harry said it to his shoes.
"But, Why? You don't want to be in Gryffindor anymore?" Tears were now running down her face. Harry's stomach felt so tight he didn't know what to do. Ron was now looking from Hermione and Harry, clearly deciding that Harry was the cause of Hermione's tears he gave him a pointed look, "Well? Are you going to tell us what is going through your head?"
It was at this time that Snape made his appearance.
"I thought I told you to go to the common room Potter?"
"Weasley! Granger! That'll be ten points from Gryffindor. EACH! And I expect you both to have detention this Saturday, I'll let you know when and where to report. Get back to your common room now!" They had no choice but to turn on the spot and leave.
"Potter! Get out of my sight!"
Harry didn't need telling twice, he took off in the direction of the Slytherin common room.
