Finn looked up from the paperwork he was trying to complete when he heard the front door slam. Abby and Evan were already home, and Scott hadn't arrived for dinner yet, so Finn could only assume that it was Ellie.
He was right. It was only a few moments later that Ellie came stomping into the kitchen. She kicked her shoes off and left them in the middle of the floor. She yanked her snow-covered jacket off and threw it over a chair. And instead of just dropping her back pack on the floor, she practically threw it to the side. She kicked her bag for good measure and then dropped into the chair at the island with a huff.
Finn arched an eyebrow. "Bad day?"
Ellie crossed her arms over her chest and glared down at the floor. "No."
Obviously, that wasn't true. Rachel absolutely hated when the kids left their things in the middle of the kitchen, so she must have been in a really horrible mood. Finn studied his youngest daughter for a moment and then went back to his paper work. Knowing exactly how Ellie was, Finn knew that he had to sit there and wait.
The only one of the Hudson children that hadn't really inherited Finn's temper was Evan (though they all had Rachel's dramatics, so there was that). Even was more even-keeled than then his older brother and sisters. It was probably because he was the youngest, so he had seen it all and was content to just go along with everything. Compared to Abby, Ellie was definitely a little more easy-going. IF Ellie got mad, however, everyone had better watch out.
It wasn't long before Ellie began grumbling to her father. At fifteen years old, she was still young enough to go to her father with her problems. Abby and Ellie were his little girls, no matter how old they got. Abby was headed off to college at the end of the summer, so Finn was going to hold on to the fact that he still had Ellie at home for a couple of years.
"People are annoying," Ellie snapped.
Finn set his papers aside and nodded his head in understanding, trying to hold back his laughter. Ellie was so much like Rachel in that moment; she often had days where she just didn't want to be around anyone and almost everyone but her family annoyed her. "Mmhmm," Finn said.
"And I don't like them," Ellie added.
"Why would you?" Finn said.
Ellie looked up at him, her large doe eyes fiery. She looked so much like Rachel, only a little bit taller. "Don't make fun of me, Daddy!"
Finn chuckled and came around the other side of the island, pausing to drop kiss on the top of his daughter's head. "I'm not, sweetie," he assured her. Ellie let out another huff and jumped off the chair, obviously headed towards her room to lock herself in there before dinner. Finn pointed to the collection of things she had left in the kitchen and added, "You should probably pick this stuff up before your mom gets home."
Ellie let out a frustrated noise, and Finn laughed. Still, Ellie scooped up her things before she headed upstairs. The door slammed behind her, and Finn laughed again. Teenagers.
It was family dinner night that night. It was something that they tried to do every weekâQuinn and Puck, Blaine and Kurt, and all of their kids would come over for dinner at least once a week. Scott was close to graduating from college, but he still tried to come home whenever he could.
The house was already filled with noise. The Puckerman girls and their only son were already there and creating an appropriate amount of havoc. Blaine and Kurt and their son were just arriving, and Kurt was already yelling about something.
Finn knocked on Ellie's door. There were a few moments before she opened it, and she looked just as grumpy as she had when she arrived at home. Finn arched his eyebrows at her and didn't bother to hide his amusement.
"Feel better?" he asked.
Ellie scowled. "No."
Nudging his daughter towards the stairs, Finn said, "Oh well. Get on downstairs. Everyone is here for dinner." He had a feeling that gathering of their rather large and loud family would put Ellie in a better mood.
Naturally, Puck didn't help matters. "Yo, Ellie! Your dad says that you're pissed off!" he yelled as soon as he saw her.
Ellie rolled her eyes and stomped into the kitchen, where Rachel was busy putting the finishing touches on dinner. Quinn hit Puck over the head and ushered their daughters into the kitchen as well, leaving the boys in the living room.
Scott gave his father a sympathetic look. "Ellie looks pissed."
"She is," Finn confirmed.
"Maybe she's PMSing!" Todd Puckerman suggested loudly. With two older sisters, Todd was very well acquainted with angry girls and their habits.
Puck, Finn, Kurt, Blaine, and Scott promptly burst into laughter at the twelve year old boy's declaration. Puck ruffled his son's hair and said, "You probably shouldn't ever say that to any of your sisters, cousins, or aunts. Ever."
Kurt nodded his head in agreement. "That might be the wisest piece of advice I've ever heard you give."
Ten minutes later, dinner was being served. When Finn caught sight of Ellie as she sat down, he saw that she was all smiles. It was almost as if she hadn't come stomping into the house only three and a half hours before. Finn wasn't surprised that all she had to do was spend some time with Rachel to feel better.
Rachel took her seat next to Finn, leaning over to press a kiss to his cheek. He grinned at her and pulled her close to kiss her lips.
"How's our daughter doing?" he asked.
"She's fine," Rachel assured Finn. "She just needed some advice from her big sister, that's all." Abby and Ellie were at the other end of the table, both talking and waving their hands animatedly. It made Finn and Rachel smile, and Scott shook his head in amazement.
"It's not just teenagers," Scott said. "It's teenage girls."
I think it's safe to say that my little sister and I have both had days like this lol. PS, please wish me luck on writing the paper that I've been avoiding by writing this chapter.
