"You know, this would be so much easier if you would just find out if you're having a boy or a girl," Kurt grumbled.
Rachel sent a glare his way and rested her hands on her stomach. She was feeling particularly irritable today, and Kurt's insistence that it would have been easier to decorate if she would just find out the sex so wasn't helping matters.
"Do not," she snapped. The baby delivered a swift kick to Rachel's kidney, and she sucked in a sharp breath.
Santana plopped down on the couch next to Rachel. "No, let's keep asking her if she'll find out if it's a boy or girl. She only has three months left. You could totally still find out!"
Rachel had enough of their antics. She had made a bet with Puck and Santana and she was going to see it through even if it was going to drive her insane. But right now, she wasn't going to put up with it. She was pregnant and felt huge and really wanted some peanut butter on top of some chicken.
She struggled to her feet with one hand on her back and one on her stomach. She may have only been six months along, but she was huge. Whether she was having a boy or a girl, this child had obviously inherited Finn's giant genes.
Rachel made her way into the dining area of the restaurant they were in, where Hiram and her aunt were directing the staff for their brunch. Rachel made herself as comfortable as possible by leaning against the counter.
"Hello, Rachel," Anne Puckerman said. "How are you and the little one feeling?"
Rachel's eyes scanned all of the available food in front of her and frowned when she saw that there was exactly zero things smothered in peanut butter. This was the only place where she wouldn't go insane and she couldn't find any peanut butter.
"I want some chicken with peanut butter on it," Rachel stated. She looked at the food again and spotted a pasta dish that she decided she needed in that moment. "Actually, I want some chocolate with peanut butter."
Hiram chuckled. "Just wait until dessert," he said. "There's a chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream topped with peanut butter with your name on it."
Rachel nodded once, pleased with that revelation. She reached for the jar of black olives on the counter, suddenly craving something salty. She popped one onto her index finger and stuck it in her mouth.
"How much longer until dessert?" she asked.
Anne patted Rachel's hand. "We'll have it after you open your presents. Go on and go sit down," she ordered.
Rachel picked up the jar of olives with one hand and pressed her free hand to the small of her back. She breathed in deeply when Baby Hudson delivered another sharp kick to her bladder. This kid was going to play sports or something, because he or she was always very active. She blamed Finn for that one.
"So have you picked out names?" one of Rachel's friends from college asked. Rachel paused with an olive half way to her mouth. She absolutely hated that question. Of course, she and Finn had discussed many names at length. At this point, they had finally narrowed it down to four or five that they really liked. Rachel had a feeling that she knew what name they were going to pick. She supposed it was just mother's intuition.
Santana, having heard someone ask Rachel that question, immediately came to her rescue. "It's a surprise," Santana answered, shooing the other girl away. She pushed Rachel over towards the chair at the head of the table. "Now sit down, shut up, and wait for dessert."
Rachel scowled at her so-called best friend. "You know, you're not being very nice right now."
Santana laughed and patted Rachel's hair. "You know I do it because I care, Berry."
Kurt came bustling into the room with a clipboard in hand. Tucking it under his arm, he clapped his hands together to get everyone's attention. "Alright! It's time for Rachel to open the presents, so everyone gather around!"
Kurt guided Rachel over to an ornate chair decorated in tulle and little charms. He helped her sit down in it, and she wrinkled her nose at the dramatic display. "Kurt, is all of this really necessary?"
"It is," Kurt said firmly. He checked his clipboard and then gestured for Quinn and Santana to bring the first set of presents over. "Now stop talking. Quinn and Santana will hand you the presents while I keep track of who got what for you."
Rachel scowled darkly and opened her mouth to rip Kurt a new one, but Quinn plopped the first present down on Rachel's lap and commanded her to open it. Suddenly too excited to yell at Kurt, Rachel ripped open the pastel colored wrapping paper and immediately turned into a pile of mush at the little baby outfit she found.
Forty minutes later, Rachel was surrounded by piles upon piles of baby outfits, toys, books, blankets, diaper bags, and stuffed animals. Her fathers had purchased a jogging stroller for her, while her Aunt Anne had found a regular stroller. They had made sure that items such as bottles and thermometers were on the list as well, so Rachel had unwrapped plenty of those.
"Are you ready for your last present, Princess?" Hiram asked.
Rachel looked up at her father with wide eyes. "There's more?" she asked. She had no idea how she and Finn were going to transport all of the things they got for the new baby back to their apartment, let alone where they were going to put it.
Hiram smiled, his eyes shining with what looked suspiciously like tears. "Just one more," he corrected. Without waiting for Rachel response, he left the room. It wasn't long before he returned with Carole, and Rachel saw that he was helping her carry something.
Rachel's father and mother-in-law made their way over to her and set down a beautiful bassinet. It was made out of dark wood and was dressed with pristine white fabric. Peering inside, Rachel saw there was a blanket with a teddy bear stitched on the front. She picked up the soft blanket and held it to her face, trying to hide the tears that had suddenly appeared.
Carole smiled, well aware of Rachel's constant change in moods. "This was Finn's bassinet," she said. "I found it up in the attic and I had Burt fix it up for the two of you.
Rachel pulled the blanket away from her face long enough to say, "Oh, Carole. It's beautiful!"
Carole got on one side of Rachel while Hiram got on the other. They both hugged her tightly, and then Rachel jumped when she felt the baby kick sharply at her bladder. Laughing, she lovingly caressed her bump and hugged her parents in return. She couldn't wait until Finn saw this.
I was recently at a baby shower for my cousin, and I couldn't resist writing one for Rachel and Baby Hudson number one!
