Abby stared in dismay at the dresses that crowded the racks in front of her. They were gorgeous, sure. Blaire was practically drooling over a princess-style ball gown that was very similar to the dress she had worn when she married Scott. Ellie was sitting on the round couch in the middle of the private room, staring wide-eyed at their surroundings. Of course, Abby had to admit that this was all very exciting. But she had a very specific idea of what she wanted to wear on her wedding day, and none of these dresses really fit her vision.
"Why are you making that face?" Kurt demanded. Whipping around to face Rachel, Kurt asked, "Why is she making that face?"
Rachel knew her children well. "Kurt, you know that these aren't the kind of dresses that Abby would wear," Rachel said, her voice placating and soothing.
"Uncle Kurt, all of these are gorgeous," Abby said. She fingered the tulle skirt on one of the ball gowns and then let it slip from her fingers with a sigh. "But I wanted something... unique."
Kurt blinked at his niece. "Unique?" he repeated. "Unique? What does that even mean?"
"You're the fashion expert, Uncle Kurt," Ellie quipped cheekily. "Shouldn't you know?"
Kurt cast a glare Ellie's way and responded with only a threatening finger pointed in her direction. Rachel and Carole stifled their laughter (unsuccessfully) behind their hands. "Not helping," Kurt grumbled. "Now Abby. This one is unique and different. Why don't you try this one on?"
Kurt extracted a huge dress from the rack. It was white with a beaded bodice and a completely open back with only two miniscule straps to keep it attached. The skirt was full and made of tulle and had several flounces. Abby and Ellie made identical faces, both of them wrinkling up their noses in a move that was patently Rachel Berry-Hudson.
"That's not very me, Uncle Kurt," Abby stressed. "Yes, it's... different. But it's not what I'm looking for. I want something a little more..." Abby trailed off, unsure of how to describe her dream wedding dress. She could see it mind's eye, but she just couldn't find the right words to use.
"Sleek?" Ellie suggested. She couldn't see her big sister in any of these dresses, that was for sure.
"Yes!" Abby exclaimed. "Sleek, but not mermaid style. Not exactly slinky, either. And not so much sparkly white stuff. I'm not trying to blind Mason."
Kurt made a mental note of each style that Abby wanted. "I think I have a few ideas," he said as he clapped his hands together in excitement. "I'll have them pull the dresses off the floor. You ladies just sit here and enjoy the mimosas!"
Abby immediately dove for the tall flute filled with orange juice and champagne. She loved her uncle very much, but shopping with him often induced a headache. She brought one over to her mother and grandmother as well, since they probably needed one just as much as she did.
Ellie slid one of the glasses off the table and took a sip from it, smiling into the bubbly drink as she watched her older sister practically chug hers. Out of the corner of her eye, Ellie noticed Blaire selecting one of the glasses from the section that was sparkling grape juice only. Blaire paused when she realized that Ellie had definitely caught her. She pressed a finger to her lips, urging Ellie to be quiet. Pushing down on the excitement that was welling up, Ellie nodded her head. She was good at keeping secrets, and if Blaire was pregnant, it definitely wasn't Ellie's secret to tell.
They were all distracted when Kurt rolled in yet another rack of dresses. Without giving Abby time to search through them, he thrust several gowns into her hands and sent her into the dressing room. Meanwhile, the rest of the women that Abby had chosen to bring with her perused the rack.
Ellie frowned when spotted a dress with long sleeves, a high collar, and a plunging neckline all the way to the naval. "Uncle Kurt! Sleeves? Really?"
"Sleeves are in this season!" Kurt defended.
"Not these kinds of sleeves."
"And not these, either!" Abby called from the dressing room. She didn't even come out entirely; instead, she just stuck her arm outside the door and waved it, revealing a puffy sleeve that stopped halfway down her forearm.
Of course, it was Rachel that came to the rescue. While the selections that Kurt had brought in had a few utterly ridiculous options, the majority of them were rather nice. Rachel spotted a dress at the end of the rack and instantly knew it was the one for her daughter.
Rachel passed the gown through to Abby. "Here, sweetie. Try this one on."
"Rachel!" Kurt immediately protested, but Rachel pinned him with a "don't mess with me" look. That was all Kurt needed to fall silent.
Ellie, Blaire, Rachel, and Carole heard nothing as Abby tried on the gown. They all waited and simultaneously held their breath as Abby slowly opened the dressing room door.
The dress was absolutely perfect. It was strapless, with a sweetheart neckline and had delicate floral appliques dotting the top part of the bodice. The skirt flared out at the hips and wasn't outrageously full, making it easy to maneuver in. Perhaps the most exquisite part of the dress was the champagne color of it. The gown fit Abby's personality completely, and she practically glowed as she stood before her family.
"Oh wow," Carole breathed. She had tears in her eyes and she was beaming at her oldest granddaughter. "Mason isn't going to know what hit him."
"I knew you would love that dress," Kurt said immediately. Rachel tossed him an exasperated look but didn't let it stay on her face for very long. She turned back to her oldest daughter, her eyes shining.
"What do you think, Abby?" she asked.
Abby smoothed her hands down the front of the gorgeous dress. "This is it," she declared. "This is my dress."
The room was flooded with sales associates and seamstresses after that, and they were busy taking Abby's measurements while Kurt tried to finagle a better price. Rachel, Ellie, and Carole stood back with their mimosas, and Ellie attempted to make sure that no one noticed Blaire drinking sparkling grape juice. Luckily, Ellie didn't really have to distract her mother that much.
"How did you know that dress would be perfect for Abby?" Ellie wondered aloud to her mother. It really had been the perfect gown for Abby, and somehow Rachel knew exactly what she wanted.
Rachel smiled and shared a knowing look with Carole. This definitely fell under mother's intuition. "You and Abby are my daughters. I know you two. Believe it or not, I know exactly kind of wedding dress you'll end up wearing, too."
Ellie snorted. "I think I need a boyfriend first, Mom."
Laughing, Rachel hugged her daughter. "Don't worry, sweetie. Your time will come."
Finding the perfect dresses to describe their personalities is such a fun thing to do!
