This is a long one guys. I just had so much to say. Hope you like my last installment of the Christmas challenge. FYI: Since finishing this I have to decided to do a sequel. Just in case anyone is interested.

Ch. 4

It was day three post op for Harm and Mac had commandeered a cot so that she could just stay with him once he was moved to his own room out of recovery. Harm was doing better but it would be another week or so of him taking it easy. His injuries had been significant but not life threatening and it was reported by the doctor that he would make a full recovery with a whole lot of TLC. After the initial waiting to see what the prognosis was Mac had called Harm's parents to let them know that he was in the hospital after being shot but that he would make a full recovery. Trish wanted to hop on a plane immediately but Mac had promised that she wouldn't leave his side until he was released if she wanted to wait till then knowing she would need help tending to him after he was discharged. Trish reluctantly agreed with the understanding that he would be well cared for and would more than likely sleep most of the days away while he was in the hospital. Mac promised to let her know the moment she found out when he would be discharged.

"Admiral" Mac hopped up off her cot to stand at attention, even though she wasn't in uniform.

"At ease, Mac. How's the patient?"

"Annoyed Sir…" Mac chuckled as Harm began to stir. Mac played with his hair to put him back at ease while she looked at the Admiral indicating that they should step outside to talk. "I'll be right back Harm…just going to step out to make a call real quick."

"Okkayaillbehereforeverandever" Harm slurred as the effects of the pain medication continued to fog his brain. Mac stepped out behind the Admiral, closing the door.

"Is he doing ok?"

"He is Sir, just in a lot of pain, he can't really get comfortable to sleep because of where the injury is."

"I see, I wanted to come by and let you know that it has been officially ruled suicide by cop on the death certificate of Michael Brumby. I thought you would want to know that it is all over."

"Thanks for the update Sir. I know that man was certifiable but I hate that he lost his life over this."

"And that Sarah, is why we all care for you so much. After everything you have been through in life by people who supposedly loved or cared for you, you still have a caring heart. I couldn't be more proud of you if you were my own daughter." Mac's eyes slowly filled with tears.

"Thank you Sir…that means more to me and anything."

"I will be granting you leave along with Harm's medical leave. The doctor thinks your injuries should have your returning to minimal duty starting tomorrow but I know that you promised Harm's mother you would stay with him until he is discharged. After speaking with his doctor I was informed he should be discharged in the next two days barring complications. I will give you the next 4 days leave then you will return for half days until you are fully released. How are your hands and feet doing?

"First, thanks for the extra days so that I can get Harms situated before his Mom arrives. My hand is fine just a few broken fingers from where he punched my hand while holding the gun. My feet are another story…I have cuts up and down from the glass and a few sets of stitches. I can put weight on them but I haven't tried to wear any shoes other than the slippers they have given me. I don't know if I will be able to be in full uniform where my shoes are concerned Sir."

"I will speak to your doctor before I leave to see what our options are. If need be I will let you work from home until you can wear your shoes with you just coming in in the mornings to meet with us and grab your next set of files."

"I will be happy to do whatever is asked of me while we put this behind us. I better get back in there Sir. He gets a little grumpy if I am gone too long."

"Colonel, is there something I should know about your relationship status?" Mac began to turn two shades of pink as she tried to figure out how to answer that loaded question.

"Well, Sir, I can't speak for Harm but I know that I am…I mean I think we are finally at a place where we can move forward in our relationship without fear of our past selves getting in the way. We have discussed how we feel about each other but haven't really had any time to test the waters…if you know what I mean."

"I think I get the picture, Mac. I am happy for you both and if I may, I would like to say…no risk, no reward. Semper Fi Marine."

"Semper Fi, Sir…Hoorah!" Mac smiled as she opened the door and the Admiral made his way to find her doctor before heading back to HQ. Mac sat on the chair close to Harm's bed, holding the book Harriet had grabbed from her nightstand against her chest as she tried to continue reading and holding his hand. It was a futile effort because it was almost impossible to turn the pages. Sighing she finally put her book down and closed her eyes for a bit. It was at this moment that Harm's eyes opened, he watched her thinking to himself 'just how lucky he was to have this beautiful woman in his life', He knew she made his life better in every way and that he loved her like no other woman he had ever known. It was at this moment he asked himself…'what am I waiting for?'

"Sarah…" Harm's voice was a bit raspy but it was loud enough. He was alert, and aware meaning his pain meds were wearing off.

"Harm? Are you ok? Are you in pain…here, wait just a second and I will get the nurse."

"Sarah, slow down. I'm ok. I just need you." Harm reached out for her.

"Well you've got me handsome…I'm not going anywhere." Slipping her hand into his.

"Good, because my life doesn't amount to much without you in it. I mean that with all my heart." Mac's eyes filled with tears as she leaned forward to kiss his lips.

"Right back at ya Rabb…I realized I need you in my life. Life is short and I am done pretending you don't mean the world to me.." Harm smiled at her.

"Whatcha reading?"

"The Davinci Code"

"Will you read to me?"

"I would be happy to. I think I'll start at the beginning so we can finish together." Mac smiled as she sat back in the chair. "Ready?" Harm shook his head. "What is it?

"I want you in bed with me."

"Oh, Harm…I don't know if they will be too happy with that. They got plenty annoyed with me when I forced a cot in here so I could stay with you." Harm reached out for her hand pulling her closer. "Harm…"

"You let me deal with them." Mac smiled and climbed in to face him. He put his good arm around her to keep her from falling off the bed as she began to read to him. It was this scene that the good doctor walked in on after the nurses reported the hospital policy violations.

"Now Colonel…I thought we had an understanding. I caved on the cot with your assurances that you wouldn't give the nurses anymore curveballs." Mac began to sit up but Harm wouldn't allow it.

"Sorry, Doc but the patient insisted and you did say he needed plenty of TLC." Mac giggled as Harm turned his head towards the Doctor with the most gorgeous shit-eating grin plastered on his face.

"Doc…if she goes, I go. I will discharge myself if necessary."

"Now, take it easy Commander. I'm sure we can work something out but I must insist that you not share a bed. That is one policy that will need to be enforced due to the nature of your injury."

"She was reading to me and needed to see the words to follow along. I understand it better."

"Yes, well, like I said Sir, I will need her to give you your own space…at least until you are released."

"And just when will that be? I can sleep at home just as easily as I can sleep here."

"We will be taking the drainage tube out this afternoon to make sure no infection develops and once we are sure that you are infection free we will discharge you but only if you have someone to care for you. Barring no complications I have informed your C.O. that you should be released tomorrow mid-afternoon after we run a last panel of bloodwork. Colonel, I assume that you will be caring for Commander Rabb and therefore are willing to learn a few things from the nursing staff on how best to deal with and recognize any issues you might come across."

"Yes, that is correct. Admiral Chegwidden has extended my medical leave to include an additional 4 days before I have to report for light duty, at that time his mom should arrive and we will both be available to him throughout the day. He will not be alone until you clear him." Mac had begun to massage the back of his hand with her thumb and move along his fingers until they were intertwined. She looked over to him and noticed for the first time that Harm only had eyes for her. He wasn't looking at the doctor or asking questions. He was content to just be there and let her take the lead. "Do you have any questions, Harm?" Harm just shook his head with a gentle smile upon his face. She smiled back at him then turned to the back to the Doctor. "Well, then I guess we are all set here."

"Ok, I will let the nurses know that the next time they change his dressing and clean the area that you are to remain in the room and learn how to care for him. How's the pain Commander?" Harm turned to look at the Doctor for the first time and just said.

"Significant but not unbearable. I would like it if I wasn't so fuzzy all the time. Is there any way we can tone it down a bit? I feel like all I am doing is sleeping."

"Your body needs the sleep but yes I will see about reducing the dosage during the day but I want you to sleep so it will be the same in the evenings. Deal?"

"Deal…thanks doc." The Doctor nodded and turned to leave. "Sorry I got you in trouble."

"I think I can handle it. Besides…I enjoyed it just as much." She grinned as she began running her fingers through his hair.

"Thanks for taking care of me."

"Always…" Mac leaned over to kiss him on the forehead but before she could actually kiss him the door opened and the nurse entered with a new IV bag.

"It's time for your next round of meds. The doctor has reduced the dosage but has added a mild sedative to help keep you calm. Before we get this hooked up though we are going to see if you can start to move around a bit. Our first task is being a little more independent in the restroom. Up you go." The nurse began to raise the bed to help him out of bed. Mac went to grab his arm as he swung his legs to the side of the bed. "It's a good thing it's all upper body injuries. Makes it easier to get around once you're not so groggy." The nurse stated. "Now, Colonel, just make sure he is balanced enough to step away from the bathroom. Commander, remember what we told you about taking care of your business. Don't be prideful."

"Yes, ma'am." Mac looked at him while raising an eyebrow. "I have to sit Mac, no standing unless someone is standing with me."

"Oh..alright then…holler if you need me." Mac stepped out and back into the room while she hovered by the door just in case he called for her.

"Colonel, after I get him settled I will change his dressing and clean his wound so that you can see how to take care of him. Always make sure he is medicated prior to starting this process as it will bring him pain." Mac nodded her understanding and asked.

"How often do I need to clean and change the wound?"

"Ideally his wound should be cleaned and redressed daily. He isn't able to shower or bath yet so only sponge baths until his stitches come out. Will you be able to do that with your hand?"

"Shouldn't be a problem. I will have plenty of help with him should anything come up." Harm called out for her and her crash course in nursing began. Harm was medicated, shoved, manipulated, washed, and cared for by Mac and the nurse as she asked question after question hoping to be as prepared as possible for any situation that may arise. Harm fell into a medicated induced sleep holding her hand. Mac was just about to fall asleep herself when she remembered she needed to call Trish and let her know of his imminent discharge. Stepping out into the hall to use her cell so that she wouldn't disturb Harm as he rested she called and shared the info with Trish.

"Yes, Ma'am, I have already been shown what and how to care for him when we get home but I wanted to let you know that Harriet, our good friend, has prepared my apartment upon my request so we will be there to help in his recovery. My building has a functioning elevator, I also have a spare room so that you will have your own space and I have a tub to help him soak when they take out his stitches. I just thought it would be closer to everything including his rehab appointments…Yes. ma'am…I have a few days extra leave and when I do report back it will be to light duty so it will be half days until I am released as well. I might have to work from home for a bit due to the fact that I will be out of uniform if I am unable to continue to wear these special slippers they gave me…ok, that sounds good. Just call my cell and I will make arrangements for someone to pick you up if I can't make it. Alright then, I look forward to seeing you.

"Commander, all your labs have come back good. You are moving around better and seem to be steady on your feet. I think it's about time I kicked you out of this place. How does that sound?"

"Like music to my ears. I am grateful for everything but I'm definitely ready to be home." Harm looked at Mac before he realized he really didn't know what the plans were.

"Well, home will have to be my place for a while. Your mom is arriving sometime in the next two days and I wanted her to have a bed to sleep on so I asked Harriet to get my apartment ready for us to stay there. I hope that's alright."

"Home is wherever you are gorgeous so that is fine by me but why is mom coming?"

"Well it was the only way I could keep her from coming the day of your surgery. She was ready to hop on a plane that night but I promised her I would leave your side to give her the peace of mind she needed." Harm reached out for her and she stepped closer to him.

"Thanks for taking care of me and for helping with my mom. I know she can be formidable."

"I would want to be anywhere else." The doctor cleared his throat, obviously uncomfortable at the level of intimacy being shared with just their eyes. Harm and Mac broke their gaze embarrassed they had forgotten he was there. "Uhh, sorry about that doc."

"That is quite alright. I have your discharge paperwork all ready to go so the nurse will be in shortly with your instructions and medications. There are a few things you will need from the pharmacy but you can stop downstairs before you head home. It will be just a few minutes."

"Are you ok staying at my place…really? I just thought it would be easier with my elevator for you. My neighbors will be nearby if anything goes terribly wrong and you will be closer to your therapy appointments when they start. Not to mention I will be able to get to you quicker when I have to start going back into the office." Harm pulled her in with his good arm and she raised her arms around his neck.

"Like I said…I am good as long as you're there with me. I don't care if I ever go back to my loft. As far as I am concerned you are my home." He leaned down to kiss her gently but neither one of them had gentleness on their minds and the innocent kiss got out of hand quickly. A clearing of the throat broke them apart as the flush in their cheeks became apparent.

"Excuse the interruption…I just have your papers here. We've gone over everything so if you will just sign here and here you guys can be on your way." Harm stepped forward and did as he was asked before turning to Mac.

"I'm ready…take me home gorgeous." Mac smiled as she picked up the few belongings they had that Harriet had brought for them to be a little more comfortable. Back at the nurse's station the legend of the kiss was being passed along one nurse at a time.

Home and comfortable the duo had just settled in ready to order a pizza for dinner when the doorbell rang. "I wonder who that is?" Mac said as she made her way over to the door.

"Harriet, it's so good to see you. Thank you so much for all you have done to help us this past week."

"It was my pleasure Ma'am."

"Come on Harriet, you are in my home and we are not in uniform…It's Mac, Sarah, Hey you…but not Ma'am, ok?"

"Ok, Sarah…Bud will be in shortly with AJ. I just wanted to make sure it was a good time for us to visit. We brought dinner and little AJ just couldn't wait to make sure his Unca Harm was ok."

"Wonderful, we were just about to order a pizza. After getting settled we were both a little wiped out. Come on in and make yourself at home. I'll just go check on Harm." Mac turned back into the bedroom to find Harm in the process of trying to get his robe on. "Let me help you with that. The Roberts stopped by for a visit and they brought dinner. Are you up for company or do you want me to tell them you are sleeping and I will just entertain them on my own."

"No, I still have a few hours of pain meds in my system so I should be ok for a bit."

"Good, because our godson needs to make sure you're ok with his own eyes. He is very worried about his unca Harm." They both chuckled a bit as they made their way out to the living room sofa. Mac got Harm all situated just as the little tyke arrived rushing to his Unca Harm. Mac caught AJ just before he launched himself onto Harm's lap. "Woah, there Little man. You need to be extra gentle with Uncle Harm for a few more weeks, Ok. He still has a pretty big boo boo even though you can't see it right now."

"Sowwrry, Auntie Mac. I be more careful. Can I sit supperrrr close to him? I miss him so muccchhh!"

"Sure you can buddy. Come on over here and keep me company…" Little AJ looked from Mac to Harm then to his mama.

"Sowwrry Unca Harm but mama says Auntie Mac is in charge of you so I have to wait for her to tell me it's ok." Harm looked up at a sheepish looking Harriet who just shrugged her shoulders. Looking down at AJ Harm said.

"You are a wise man AJ. I wouldn't want Auntie Mac to be mad at me either. How about it Mac, can AJ keep me company?"

"I think it will be ok as long as you both are very gentle." Both Harm and AJ looked at each other with big smiles while Harm raised his hand for a miniature high five. "Harriet, what did you bring? You know you didn't have to."

"I know but…well you know food is how I say I love you when words fail me. I love to feed those who mean the world to me…and well the both of you are like the siblings I never had."

"That might be the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me. Thanks Harriet. I guess it's true…we make our own family when we don't have one. I couldn't be more proud to be a part of your family."

"Ok, that's settled. I hope you know you can always ask me for anything and I will do my best for you. Now, I brought shrimp poorboys with all the toppings and some spicy ranch crackers to give us that little bit of crunch. For dessert I made some sugar cookies and brought decorations for you guys to do with AJ if you are up for it."

"That sounds wonderful. Let's dig in." Dinner and conversation was pleasant and enjoyed by all. Mac cut Harm's sandwich into more manageable pieces so that he could pick it up with the arm not encased in a sling. AJ watched as his Auntie Mac cut his Uncle Harms food and decided he would help by breaking his crackers into smaller pieces for him.

"There you go, Unca Harm. All better now?"

"Yes, AJ, that was very thoughtful of you." The other adults laughed as they watched the scene unfold. As dinner progressed Mac noticed that Harm was getting sleepy so she asked if they could decorate the cookies tomorrow so that she could tend to Harm's wound and get him to sleep. They all agreed to meet back at the apartment after work tomorrow to decorate cookies.

"I'll take care of dinner tomorrow Harriet. You guys just swing by and we can catch up. I have a big favor to ask."

"Sure thing Mac…let me know if I need to bring anything." The friends hugged and Harriet reminded her to call if they needed anything. Mac closed the door and turned to see Harm making his way to the couch.

"Harm head on in the bedroom. I need you to take your meds before I check your dressings. I don't need to change them until tomorrow but you are due for a wash if you're up to it."

"Sure thing Mac. Where do you want me?"

"Give me just a moment…I need to grab a towel to put under you. Here, take your pills…there's a glass of water on the nightstand." Mac grabbed everything she would need to give Harm a sponge bath but before she stepped out of the bath she gave herself a little pep talk. 'Alright Mackenzie, you can do this…keep your thoughts to yourself and remember you are providing care to an injured man not…well, you know.' Stepping into the bedroom Mac placed the towel on the bed and helped Harm to lay down on it. "Ok, I am going to let you relax while I give you a little bath." Harm closed his eyes and smiled.

"I could get used to this."

"Yeah, well, that makes two of us." Harm made room for Mac by scooting over as she began playing with his hair.

"Do you have your boxers on?"

"Yep…"

"Ok, I'm going to take your sweats off so that I can wash you from the waist down first. Then once your meds have kicked in a bit we will work above the waist."

"I will be on my best behavior." Mac just smiled and said."

"I'll just bet you will be. We need to get our routine down before your mom comes or she will think I wasn't doing a good job taking care of you."

"My mom isn't going to be worried about my care, she is going to wonder about our relationship. Not to mention asking a million questions." Mac had a worried look on her face looking down at him.

"I didn't even think about that…" Mac stood up and began to remove his bottoms. Harm, feeling a bit silly due to his meds, started humming the striptease tune…

"Da Da Da Da Dum, Tsh, Tsh, Da Da Da Da dum da dum dum…"

"Harm…you said you were going to behave."

"I am…I can't help it if you bring out sexy Harmy…" Mac giggled. Thinking this would make for some great stories down the line.

"Come on in guys…Let me go get Harm and you can start on those cookies AJ." Mac leaned down to give him a hug.

"Ok, Auntie Mac…I love making the cookies pwetty." Mac just smiled as she lowered AJ to the floor. She turned to head towards her bedroom just as Harm made his way out in his sweats, holding his shirt.

"Hey, Mac, I need help…oh…sorry guys, I didn't know you guys were here already. I'll wait for you here Mac." Harm turned back into the room.

"Be out in just a second guys…" Bud and Harriet looked at each other as Mac entered her room. Bud mouthed…

"Finally"

"I know…right!" Harriet called over to AJ… "AJ, come help me get everything set up."

"Ok, Mommy. I just wove cookies, specially Cwristmas cookies."

"Me too AJ." AJ swung his head around to see his uncle Harm coming out with Auntie Mac's help.

"Are you ok, Unca Harm? How come Auntie Mac has to help you walk?"

"Well AJ, sometimes I have to do things that still hurt and when I do I get a little dizzy. It will pass soon." Mac led him to the table and the cookie decorating began with all colors of frosting, sprinkles, edible glitter powder…you name it.

"Auntie Mac, your marine cookie is so cool. Do you like my twee?"

"I love it. But I think Harm's plane is pretty cool too…what do you think?"

"Oh is that what that is? I was wondering." Mac just giggled as Harm looked incredibly offended.

"So Mac, what favor did you need to ask?" Mac stood up and asked her into the bedroom so they could talk in private. Meanwhile Harm said,

"Hey Bud, Do you think I could get you to do me a favor as well?"

"Anything Harm. What can I do for you?"

"Well you know Mac and I are going to the WhiteHouse Christmas ball next week. She doesn't know it yet but I am trying to get some things in order so that I can pop the question." Bud eyebrows tried their best to tap the ceiling. "I know Bud…it came as a surprise to me too but once the idea popped into my head I just felt so at ease about everything."

"I know exactly what you mean. It's like everything just becomes clear."

"Exactly!"

"What do you need me to do?" Harm told Bud of his plans and how he needed his help with picking up his mess dress from his apartment as well as where he had the ring stashed. With Bud understanding his role in the plans Harm was making he was glad to continue cookie decorating with his son as they waited for the ladies to re-enter the room.

"All done, Unca Harm…you want one?"

"No thanks AJ, it's about time for my medicine so that Auntie Mac can fix my boo before I go to sleep. But you can have mine as long as it's ok with your mommy."

"Ok, I'll go ask her." AJ ran off to his Auntie's room to look for his mama. Just as he was trying to open the door his mama stepped out with his auntie right behind her. "Mama, Unca Harm says he doesn't want his cookie cuz he needs his medi. He says I can have it if you say so."

"Settle down son, yes you can have his cookie but let's take it home. Auntie Mac has lots to do before Uncle Harm can go night, night. Give kisses and say Good Night." AJ ran to his Unca Harm first then to his Auntie Mac giving kisses and hugs. Bud picked up his son as Harriet cleared away the cookie mess and then they were all on their way. "Bud, you will never believe what Mac asked me to do."

"Well, you won't believe what Harm asked me to do either. You first." As they walked to their car they proceeded to relay all they had learned from their friends and admitted to each other that although the plans they had for one another were good they could definitely be better.

"Now that I know what his plans are I will see about how we can add to them. Let's go home and get to planning."

"Harm, I need you to lay down on your stomach before your meds make you too sleepy. It will be easier to change your dressings." Harm flipped over, turning his head towards her.

"You just want to look at my sexy six, don't you?"

"Yep, that's it…I can't get enough of you!" Mac couldn't believe how funny he was while under the influence. She thought she could probably get him to talk about anything this way. While she began cleaning his wound and redressing the area she asked, "Hey Harm, how much do you love me?"

"Oh, that's easy…I love you more than the cookie monster loves cookies." Mac tilted her head towards him with a smile on her face. "How much do you love me Mac?"

"Lets see…I love you more than I love coffee and chocolate combined." Harms pushed up with his eyes about to pop out of their sockets.

"Wow, that was way better than the one I said, I know how much you love your chocolate and coffee. Let me try again."

"Why? I loved your cookie monster one. Do you know…he was my favorite growing up."

"Really…mine was Oscar the grouch." Mac laughed at that and said.

"I wouldn't have guessed that. Why Oscar?" Harm shrugged.

"After dad went missing my so-called friends all called me the grouch because I never wanted to play with them anymore, but who has time to play when you are the man of the house. They just didn't get it. So…I embraced Oscar the grouch and quickly realized that he just wanted to be who he was inside without everyone changing him…he loved and protected his friends with a passion and he was never worried about what others thought about him." Mac pulled him close and began to kiss him gently as she pulled away she said.

"I can get on board with that. I love you more than all the trash in Oscar's world."

Both Harm and Mac got into a comfortable routine. Breakfast was simply fruit and yogurt, eggs and toast, or smoothies because she knew he loved a good banana and peanut butter smoothie, sometimes if he was still sleeping she would run to the bakery around the corner for fresh bagels or croissants. Harm was really enjoying the book Mac had started to read to him so that became a part of their evening before falling off to a dreamless sleep. Snuggling on the couch, watching a different Christmas movie each day, and reading the newspaper together. It was domestic bliss. On day three of being home together Mac got a phone call from Trish letting her know that her flight would be arriving late afternoon. She gave her all her flight information and asked how Harm was doing.

"He's doing fine, Trish. His meds make him pretty loopy but other than that he is comfortable and resting well."

"I knew he would be well taken care of. I'll see you soon darling…They just called for me to board." Mac looked at Harm as she entered the living room.

"Who was that Mac?

"That my dear was your mother…she will be here this afternoon. Do you think you will be ok by yourself for a while so that I can go pick her up?"

"Sure…I will just whip up a little dinner. What did you have planned for this evening?"

"Nevermind Harm. I will make other arrangements. I don't want you overdoing it and I know if I leave you unattended you will probably undo all my hard work of helping you recover. I will call Sturgis to pick up your mom or maybe the Admiral. Now, I have lots to do to get ready for your mother. Are you going to nap?"

"I guess so…isn't there something I can do to help while I sit?"

"Everything requires two hands, handsome, but can you clean up the bathroom a bit so I can just go in there and disinfect everything."

"I'm on it. Do you need me to grab some bed linens for the spare room?"

"Sure. That reminds me…do you think your mom will be ok with us sleeping in the same bed?"

"Mac, I'm almost forty years old…I'm pretty sure my mom knows I'm not a virgin."

"But we haven't…well…you know…and I don't want her thinking that."

"Don't worry Mac, I will make sure your intentions are perfectly clear with my mom." Harm laughed as he walked into the bedroom. As the day slipped away they worked together to prepare for Trish's arrival. After Mac called Sturgis to ask for the favor of picking up Trish she began working on dinner. She had planned to make a special Christmas dish that her grandmother had taught her. She was hoping to really impress Trish, not to mention surprise Harm since he didn't think she could cook. She worked diligently getting all the preparation done so that she could throw it all together quickly. Thankful that she had already done the shopping the last time Bud came by to visit she made her way to the door as it rung. Harm was napping after expending so much energy helping to prepare for Trish's arrival.

"Trish, I am so happy to have you join us. Please come in." Mac took her suitcase from Stugis. "Good to see you Sturgis…come on in. Would you like to stay for supper?"

"That would be great Mac, if it's not an imposition."

"Absolutely not…I would love to have you spend some time with Harm. I think he would love to see you. Let me just go see if he's awake yet."

"Oh, don't wake him dear. Let's give a bit more while we get everything settled." Mac nodded and led Trish to her room. "This is lovely Sarah…thank you so much for making it so comfortable for me to stay and help with Harm."

"It's my pleasure. I'll leave you to get settled. The linens were just changed this morning so everything is ready for you. I am going to get dinner finished." Mac entered the living area. "Sorry about that Sturgis…can I get you something to drink while you wait?"

"That would be great but let me help…" He followed her into the kitchen. Mac began to make the final preparations for dinner pulling the walnuts out of the oven and adding them to the food processor. As the food processor worked its magic Sturgis grabbed a juice out of the fridge. "Can I help you with anything?"

"Sure…can you slice this head of cauliflower into ½ inch slices."

"I sure can." Mac added the spices and walnuts to the lentils that had been cooking in the vegetable both. After the cauliflower was sliced Mac rubbed them with avocado oil and added the steak seasoning, then she popped them into the oven to cook as the stew melded together with all the spices. "Mac, this smells amazing. What is it?"

"It is something my grandmother taught me before she passed away. I haven't made it in ages but it's not something you make all the time. It's a dish that the Iranian culture prepares for special occasions. I'll explain it later at dinner. I normally add chicken but I made this a vegan version for Harm. Next time…Harm will have to pick around the chicken though." They both laughed heartily as he watched her continue to stir the stew.

"What's it called?"

"Fesenjan"

"I look forward to tasting the original recipe when Harms is not being catered to." Mac laughed as she added the pomegranate molasses and the last of the spices.

"Ok, I'm going to go wake Harm while the cauliflower finishes cooking. Will you just stir this for a bit?"

"Not a problem. I'll be here when you get back." Mac left the kitchen area just as Trish was entering the living room.

"What can I do to help darling?"

"Can you set the table for me, Trish. Everything you need is right over there on the hutch. I'm going to let Harm know that dinner is almost ready so that he can start to exit the medicine induced fog he gets into as he sleeps." Trish nodded and Mac made her way into the bedroom. Trish set the table and then joined Sturgis in the kitchen.

"That smell is amazing…what is it?"

"Not exactly sure Mrs. Burnett, Mac started to explain everything but she said she would share more about it at dinner. All I know is that she modified her grandmother's recipe to make a vegan version for Harm."

"Well it smells delightful…she must really love my son to be going to so much trouble caring for him."

"I know she does…but I think this is more about guilt…she still feels bad that he sacrificed himself to protect her."

"And that just shows me how much he loves her. Why have they not moved this relationship along?"

"According to Harriet, things have progressed quite nicely, but they are moving slowly hoping to not make the same old mistakes."

"At least there's that…I guess I can be patient if it means grandbabies in my future. Do you need any help with that?"

"I'm just stirring until Mac gets back…she went to check on Harm." They were just about to step into the living room when they heard Harm say,

"But Mac…I don't wanna get up…I wasn't finished dreaming…it was a really good one."

"You can go right back to bed after dinner sweetheart…you have some guests. Remember this morning I told you that your mom was going to be here for dinner and Sturgis was gracious enough to pick her up for us so I have asked him to join us for dinner."

"Yes…I love it when my friends come to play with me…Hey Mac, don't let my mom make me go to bed. I wanna play with Sturgis…You think he will want to play legos with me like AJ did?" Sturgis and Trish started giggling in the kitchen as they watched Mac help him into his chair at the table.

"Mac told me the meds made him a little loopy but I would say that's more than a little loopy."

"I would have to agree…I haven't played legos in about thirty years." Sturgis stepped back over to the stove and continued to stir. Mac made her way over to the kitchen and asked Trish to join Harm at the table while she finished up. Trish happily joined her son and began chatting with him about anything and everything. Mac finished getting supper together and Sturgis helped her bring everything to the table.

"Hey…Mac…look who's here…Sarah Mackenzie, this is my mother Patricia Anne Burnett. Oh, hey Sturgis, when did you get here?" The other three just looked at each other as they sat. Mac began to unload the tray before she made her way back into the kitchen for the tea she had brewed.

"If you will allow me to serve you it is the custom."

"By all means, I am looking forward to tasting this amazing dinner you have prepared Sarah." Trish grabbed her napkin to place it in her lap as Mac began to serve her guests. "Can you tell me what we are dining on?"

"Of course, this is an Iranian dish that my grandmother taught me. This is called Fesenjan, I altered the recipe for Harm so this is a vegan version. Usually it has chicken in it.

"I can eat chicken Mac…but thank you for doing that. I think my head is starting to clear a bit. You should have got me up a little earlier. I hope I didn't make a fool of myself."

"Not at all dear. You were the perfect gentleman." Trish said as she was handed her plate. "The smell is out of this world." Mac finished serving everything and sat down to enjoy her supper with her guest. "So Sarah…tell me what is the fragrance in the stew? I can't quite place it."

"Well, it might be the turmeric. Not many people cook with that here in the states. But it could also be the pomegranate molasses that I stirred in at the end."

"So tell me, what exactly is in the stew? I've never had cauliflower presented quite like this before. It's delicious, especially with the stew over the top."

"Thanks, Trish. This is what we call a cauliflower steak. Served under the walnut and lentil stew."

"That's what I was tasting." Sturgis said. "I kept telling myself that I could taste walnuts but I just didn't know. This is wonderful. What would be different if you hadn't made the adjustments for Harm?"

"Chicken of course but also we would have served it over rice. The flavors of the steak seasoning added the element of the meat flavor. Do you like it, Harm? You haven't said much?"

"I love it, it's amazing…you've been holding out on me. You always told me you couldn't cook."

"Not true…you assumed. I just never offered. Besides, I can't cook the things you cook. The extent of my culinary prowess is breakfast and Persian dinners."

"Well, it's wonderful. How long before my next round of meds?"

"Tonight should be relatively pain free so if you're doing ok then we can hold off for a while so you can visit."

"Good, mom Sturgis, would you like to join me on the couch for a bit before my nurse puts me to bed?"

"Sounds great, let me just help Sarah clean things up while you visit with your friend." Mac and Trish made quick work of cleaning up, not having any leftovers to stow away; it was easy for Mac to shoo Trish out of the kitchen as she got dessert ready. Mac had prepared one of her favorite cakes but she wasn't going to tell them it was the Persion love cake. She would have to come up with something else. Loading the tray with the dessert plates and the tea kettle with honey she entered the living room to a lively bout of storytelling and laughing. Taking a moment to enjoy the happy feelings she was experiencing at a home full of life, she realized that often it was just her and nothing but the noise of the TV which just isn't the same. Life was so much better with the framily she had developed. Her grandmother would be so happy to see her sharing her traditions with them.

"Who's up for some dessert?"

"That looks lovely, Sarah. Are those rose petals?"

"They are…my grandmother called this the rose cake. She only made it for engagements and weddings in the family but I thought it would be lovely for our evening. It's one of my favorite desserts that isn't covered in chocolate." Harm and Sturgis laughed knowing how important chocolate was to this marine. They sat and enjoyed their dessert while visiting. Noticing that Harm was yawning a little more than before, Mac caught Sturgis's attention nodding in Harm's direction.

"Well, I think I'm going to call it a night folks. Thanks again for an amazing dinner Mac. It was the best meal I've had in a long time."

"Thanks Sturgis, I am so glad you liked it." Sturgis stood and said goodbye to everyone before making his way to the door. Mac walked him out and thanked him one last time for his help picking up Trish. She returned to the sofa area and Trish said,

"Darling, do you need anything? It's been a long day for me and I was thinking of showering and catching an early evening before we get moving tomorrow."

"Sure Trish, that sounds good. It's time for Harm to take his meds so that I can check his dressings. Let me get him his pills and I will show you to the restroom while they start to work for him. It helps with the pain of having to manipulate his wound area." Mac grabbed his pills and watched him take them as she brushed her fingers through his hair. Trish just watched as she saw the love between them transferring through their eyes.

"I'll just go get my toiletries." Trish made her way back into the living room with everything she would need for a shower. "I'm all set dear."

"Great, let me show you the lay of the land. Now unfortunately I only have the one bathroom but the door stays open so if you need to use the restroom during the night you just go right ahead. Here is a shelf for you to store your toiletries so you don't have to be carrying everything with you back and forth. Harm thought you would like that. The towels are here, the hamper hides in that cabinet there and anything you see in here you're welcome to."

"Thank you dear but I don't want to disturb you while you both sleep. I should be able to wait until you are moving around."

"Trish, even though Harm and I are sharing a bed we are not doing anything but sleeping. I wanted to be close to him because he's been having nightmares but he isn't aware of them. You won't be disturbing us in the least bit. We are moving our relationship along but we haven't crossed that line yet. So don't worry." Trish just nodded as Mac closed the door and returned to Harm on the couch. "Are you ready handsome?"

"Yep, do with me what you will. But Mac I thought we didn't have to change the dressings tonight."

"You're right, we don't but I wasn't going to tell your mom that I had to give you a sponge bath."

"Good point." They made their way into the bedroom so that Mac could bathe Harm as quickly as possible or at least the lower half of him before Trish finished in the bathroom. "I definitely enjoyed that a whole lot more when you didn't have to rush."

"I did too, Sailor but don't worry, our time will come." Putting his pajama bottoms on after finishing with the lower half of his body, she had him flip onto his stomach once more. Just as she was removing the dressing to wash around the area Trish stepped out. She wanted to see the extent of his wound care so she quietly approached from behind. Mac turned and smiled, nodding for her to come over. "Don't worry, he always falls asleep while I'm doing this because of his meds. I'm just washing his body a bit because he can't shower yet. Hopefully with his follow up tomorrow they will remove his stitches and he can begin to shower or at least take a bath."

"You really have been quite busy haven't you dear?"

"I don't mind. It's the least I can do, besides, he is very important to me so…"

"I know Sarah, I can see it when you look at each other. The level of intimacy in just your eyes speaks volumes. I'll let you finish up. I'm going to call Frank and then read for a bit before I make it an early night. Do you have any plans for dinner so that maybe I can relieve you of that duty."

"That would be great. I have a rotation going of his favorites and tomorrow is eggs and toast. Simple but he eats about 3 eggs scrambled so make plenty. My house is your house, Trish. Anything you see you are welcome to. I am going to make a grocery run tomorrow now that you are here. If I leave him alone he always tries to do too much and I am bound and determined to help him recover as quickly as possible."

"Wonderful darling…good night." Trish made her way back to her room and Mac finished up with Harm before helping him to turn on his side for the night. Mac showered and changed quickly and before she knew it she was fast asleep holding onto Harm as he slept. It was close to 3:30 in the morning when Trish was awoken by yelling. She opened her door and made her way over to the other bedroom only to hear her son yelling Mac's name out.

"No, Sarah…don't leave me…I promised I would keep you safe…please…My life is nothing without you. Hold on for me baby. The ambulance is almost here." Mac was trying to settle him with her words as she had been the last few nights.

"It's ok Harm, I'm right here. I'm ok…I'm not hurt…you did save me sweetheart. Sshh, Sshh, I'm right here Harm…Can you feel me…I'm holding you tight…you are here with me in bed. Mic is dead…he can't hurt us anymore."

"Bastard's dead…that's my marine. Bet he never saw you coming baby." Mac just giggled, knowing Harm was still fast asleep and she had moved his nightmare along. She got up to get a glass of water when she bumped into Trish.

"Oh, Trish…I'm sorry if he woke you. This is what I was telling you about earlier. He never wakes up as long as I can soothe him back into a restful sleep. I'm just going to grab a water bottle. Do you want one?"

"Sure, I'm going to take the chance to use the restroom while I'm up as well. I'll be right out."

The days and nights passed quickly. Harm's appointment went well and he had fewer restrictions placed on him. His meds were reduced to just OTC tylenol or Advil, whichever he preferred. Trish settled into the routine nicely and before Mac knew it she was back at the office for half of the day. The doctor had made arrangements for her to wear medical shoes with her uniform, and the Admiral was just happy to have his Chief of staff back to help with his day to day dealings with the junior staff. Trish took over physical therapy duties and was happy to see Harm improving by leaps and bounds. He was able to care for himself with a few exceptions and she was thankful that he had found his true smile, not just his 'I can get what I want' smile. She attributed this change to the brown eyed girl that was currently hosting them both.

"Hey mom, I was thinking about swinging by JAG HQ after my session today so that we can surprise Mac with lunch. What do you think?"

"I think that is a lovely idea, son. She has done so much to make both of us feel comfortable and welcome in her home. She is a lovely woman, you know."

"I know mom…and I hear what you are trying to not say loud and clear. I have already made some plans to take the next steps for us."

"What can I do to help you?"

"Nothing right now except get me to JAG. Bud has run some errands for me and has something for me to pick up and I need to talk to the Admiral…so our visit is two fold." Trish clasped her hands in front of her mouth with tears threatening to ruin her makeup.

"Wonderful…let's get going." Harm looked at her thinking about how much love his mother must have for him and was saddened to know that Mac didn't have that unconditional love in her life. He was bound and determined to be that for her.

"Mom, I was thinking…maybe you could help me choose flowers that really mean something. I know you always spoke of the language of the flowers but I am sad to say that it really didn't stick with me. Roses are important to us but I want to save those for the big day…God willing."

"It would be my pleasure dear. Can I ask when you plan for all this to happen?"

"I had planned on surprising her at the White House Christmas Ball. We are going in a couple of days. Harriet is bringing her dress by tonight and Bud will bring my dress mess for me. She said her dress was satin and gray with a red wrap."

"If you are ready, let's go by the florist before we go to your session, so that we can get everything ordered."

"I'm all set Mom." Trish and Harm made quick work of creating the perfect bouquet for Mac for the evening. Trish even talked Harm into a wrist corsage even though he wasn't sure if Mac would wear it. Therapy was grueling but good and great strides were accomplished. Feeling good after leaving Bethesda, Harm called the office to see if the Admiral could spare some time for him.

"Tiner…"

"Hey Tiner, it's Commander Rabb…does the Admiral have a few minutes to spare before lunch? I just finished therapy and thought I would swing by to give my most recent report."

"Let me check sir, just one moment…looks like I can move some things around and clear about ten minutes for you at 1210. Would that be ok?" Looking down at his watch Harm noticed that it was 1140 and just smiled.

"That would be perfect. I'll be there. Can you please connect me with the Colonel now?"

"Just one moment Sir.."

"Mackenzie…"

"Hey, Gorgeous…" Mac's face just lit up as she swiveled her chair so that she was facing out the window behind her desk.

"Hey, yourself, handsome…how did PT go?"

"It went great…that's actually why I'm calling. I have to come in the give my most recent report to the Admiral and mom and I were hoping you could break away for lunch. I meet with him at 1210."

"That would be perfect…I secure today at 1300 so I will just work through until you are ready to leave and head out a little early as long as it's ok with the Admiral. I will get everything squared away so just swing by my office when you are ready to go."

"Great, see you in a bit." Harm smiled and looked at his mom. "One more call to make."

"Roberts…"

"Hey Bud, I am going to swing by the office in a few minutes. Do you have the ring with you?"

"I sure do Harm…I haven't left it anywhere since I picked it up. I have to be in court at 1230 today, but if you haven't stopped by I will have gunny hang on to it. It will be in a manilla folder with the paperwork and receipt from the jeweler as well as the car service. Then this evening Harriet and I will swing by with your uniform and Mac's dress."

"You're a lifesaver Bud. I don't want to even imagine what my life would be like if you both weren't a part of our framily. See you in a bit." Not being in uniform slowed their entrance down more than he expected. So, he didn't have time to meet with Bud before his meeting with the Admiral so he just decided he would find Gunny when he was done.

"Hey Tiner, is he ready for me?"

"He's expecting you Sir, Ma'am…good to see you again Mrs. Burnett."

"You too, Tiner." Trish smiled at the young man and continued to follow Harm into the Admirals office.

"Harm…Mrs. Burnett…what a pleasant surprise."

"Thank you Admiral…I'm so grateful for all the considerations you have given both to Harm and Sarah these past weeks."

"Well…this has definitely been an interesting ordeal. But I am happy that it is all behind us. Now, to what do I owe this honor? Please sit."

"Sir, I have my most recent report from my doctor and am happy to report that I will be fit for partial duty beginning after the new year. I won't be able to drive but after what I have to inform you of next I am hoping that won't be an issue."

"And what is that Commander?" The Admiral noticed how nervous his senior attorney became and felt that he knew what was coming. He glanced at Trish and they both had a sparkle in their eyes before they both turned back to Harm.

"Well, Sir you see, it's like this…I have always had very strong feelings for the Colonel and I wanted to inform you that everything we have been through I have realized that I won't find a finer individual to share my life with and I intend to ask her to marry me while we are at the White House seeing as how that is where we met…and well…" Trish placed her hand on his arm. Harm looked up from his hands for the first time since he started talking to find that both his mom and the Admiral had huge smiles on their faces.

"Son…it's about damn time! I am happy to see that you can learn from the past and seize your moment. Have you given much thought to career moves for the both of you?"

"Sir…we haven't even discussed marriage yet. This will be a total surprise. I do know that I don't want to have a long engagement and as long as Mac is ok with it…well, my mom and I are going to make tentative arrangements for a New Year's Eve ceremony. Will you be available Sir? I know Mac would be honored to have you walk her down the aisle."

"Available and honored."

"Great, Sir, if that will be all I have a few more folks to touch base with before we take Mac out for lunch." The Admiral nodded and said…

"Dismissed and good luck tomorrow."

"Thank you Sir." Both Harm and Trish made their way to find Gunny. "Hey Gunny, Bud said he was going to leave something for me with you."

"Right here sir. He said I wasn't to step away from this package until it was delivered to you. Must be awfully important."

"So important Gunny that my future depends on it." Gunny's eyes widened and looked from Harm to his mother…

"Sorry Ma'am, Victor Galindez."

"Nice to meet you son, I'm Trish Burnett. Harm's mom.

"Sorry, I should have introduced you but I was so focused on getting this package secured. My apologies mother. Thanks again Gunny." Harm and Trish made their way over to Mac's office to see if she was ready for lunch as they got closer they were both surprised to hear her agitated voice as she constructively criticized the report handed in by a junior staff member. Upon reaching her door the young man quickly exited with his head down mumbling to himself…

"Geez, I can't believe I didn't proofread that report before turning it in. What was I thinking?" Harm just smiled while looking at his mother.

"See's tough isn't she son?"

"Like no other…she doesn't accept less than 100%"

"My poor grandbabies." Harm swiveled his neck so fast in her direction.

"Mom, please don't start with that." A wonderful lunch was shared and plans were made for dinner. Harm was no longer in his sling so he planned to make dinner with his mom to give Mac's feet a break. Steak and Lobster with mixed vegetables and Grams' fresh baked bread, Trish had opted to run to the grocery store on her own so grab what was needed so Harm rode home with Mac.

"Sarah?"

"Yes Harm…" Harm grabbed her hand as they began walking up to the apartment.

"You've been wonderful with my recovery and with my mom and I invaded your space. I just wanted to let you know that you are my everything and I am so grateful that you are in my life." Mac looked into his eyes, handing him the keys so he could open the door for them. Her eyes began to glisten.

"That was such a nice thing to say, but I don't consider it an invasion. I love having people around me. It sure beats coming home to a tv dinner with only ZNN for company. I would much rather prefer you to be here with me all the time." Mac realized a half a second too late that her filter didn't stop her desires from being shared in a casual conversation. Harm just looked at her with wide eyes that were so hard for her to read. Was he happy, confused, disgusted? She couldn't tell.

"I'm sorry Harm, I didn't mean for that to come out I just got a little ahead of mys…uummph" Before she could finish her sentence Harm was kissing her hard, walking her back up against the door as he grinded into her. Hands moving over every square inch of her chest. Slipping his hands under her uniform blouse he gently skimmed the lace of her bra until he was able to dislodge it enough to pinch her nipples eliciting a soft moan from her. "Nice move sailor…"

"I aim to please Ms. Mackenzie." The kissing resumed as did the petting under their clothes not ever removing anything. The game they had begun a few weeks ago was now super sexually charged but knowing that Trish was right behind their arrival and the Roberts were not far behind it was a frustratingly slow but pleasurable make out session. All too soon their foreheads were resting against each other while they tried to regain some of their composure. Their breathing all but evened out and swollen lips beginning to settle again just in time for Harm's cell phone to ring.

"Rabb…yep, we're all set. See you in a few minutes. That was Bud. Him and Harriet decided to swing by before they pick up AJ because he won't want to leave so they will be here shortly. I guess it's a good thing too because I need to take care of this little problem."

"Not so little of a problem there. Do you need any help?" Mac just laughed at the look he was giving her.

"No, Colonel…you are what gave me this problem to deal with in the first place." Walking away to her bouts of laughter Mac walked over to the window to watch for Trish or the Roberts. It wasn't long after that she saw Trish pull up.

"Hey Harm…I'm going down to help your mom with the groceries. I'll be right back." Mac ran down the hall and towards the stairs to meet Trish. As she arrived at the car the Roberts were just pulling up as well. Happy to be of help, Bud handed Harm's uniform to Harriet so that he could help Mac and Trish with the bags.

Dinner prepared and eaten. Trish and Mac went into the bedroom to look at the dress that Harriet picked out.

"Oh, Sarah, that is exquisite. Is that satin or silk?

"I told her to look for satin but I kind of think it might be raw silk now that I am looking at it."

"Well whatever it is…I think breathtaking is the best way to describe it." Mac was so impressed with the choice that Harriet made. She was nervous about not trying it on before she was in a situation where she didn't have time to fix it but this dress was amazing. The shoulders were bare but it had a square halter top style that clipped at the back of her neck. The color was a cross between gray and silver and while it gathered at her breast giving it a sophisticated look it still allowed for a small amount of cleavage to be shown in a tasteful way, the bodice fell without any gathering and was full length and free flowing. The shoes were silver with crystals on the straps. "What's in that box dear?"

"I don't know, let's see." Mac opened what looked like a gift box to find a sexy set of lingerie that was a perfect match to the color of the dress. "Oh, goodness, that wasn't what I expected. I wonder why Harriet would have bought this. It isn't necessary for my outfit."

"There's a note dear…why don't you read it. It is stunning. I may have to make myself scarce for the evening." Mac's eyes widened as she looked at Trish as her cheeks filled with the perfect rose color. "Oh, really dear, I may be old but I'm not dead. That is tasteful and sexy all wrapped up into one. What does the note say?" Mac looked at the paper in her hands.

Mac,

I know you didn't ask for this specific item but I thought it couldn't hurt. It may just help things move along. I was going to invite Trish to the house for a gingerbread house night with the family so you guys can have some privacy…just in case.

Harriet

(ever the hopeful romantic)

"Well? What does it say?"

"Uhm, it says…" Mac was trying to think quickly on her feet. "It says, she thought I would like to feel just as beautiful underneath the dress as I am sure to be on the outside. She is so sweet." Mac did a good job of averting Trish's eyes not wanting her to see right through her."

"Whatever you say dear…" Trish just giggled as she walked out of the room. "Your entire outfit will knock him right out of his socks. Good Night dear."

Mess dress…check

Ring…check

Car service confirmation…check

Flowers…check

Webb…check

Candles…check

Harm ran through his list one last time. He was anxious, excited and nervous all at the same time. Sound mission planning to the rescue as well as a mom and a few friends will hopefully make this one of the best days of his life.

"Harm, what time do I need to be ready by? Do I have time to make us a lite lunch?"

"The car will pick us up at 1700, dinner is served at 1800 and I figured an hour would give us plenty of time to get through security and settle at our table. As far as lunch goes, mom prepared us something before Harriet picked her up. I'll get everything out so that we can eat. Then I will move my stuff into the guest room so we can dress for the evening."

"Harm, you don't have to do that…we have basically been living together for the last two weeks. I love the domesticity of us dressing together."

"I do too Mac but tonight is super special and I want to treat you like the princess you are to me. Meet me in the kitchen in 5." With that, Harm entered the kitchen to pull out and warm up the meal Trish had prepared for them. He was so grateful that his mom was here to help him get everything set up. Everyone had their plans and orders to carry out while he showed Sarah a wonderful evening. He truly was blessed in the friends he had chosen and the family that loved him. Mac walked into the kitchen to find some wedding soup warming on the stove and a roast beef sandwich for her while Harm had an eggplant sandwich warming in the toaster oven.

"Smells wonderful…what kind of soup is that? Wait…are those meatballs?" Harm just chuckled.

"Power down Marine…this is mom's italian wedding soup and yes those are meatballs. There are pork/beef meatballs for you and tofuballs for me to add over there in that pot." Mac scrunched up her face when mentioned tofu. Well, let's eat. I can't wait for this magical evening to begin." The meal eaten, they both went to separate rooms to dress. Not being able to wait any longer he walked over to her door and asked her how much longer she needed.

"Sarah, how much more time do you need? I forgot my cologne in there, can you bring it out with you?" Mac spoke through the door.

"I will be about ten more minutes and yes I will bring it out for you." Harm called the chauffeur to let them know they would be down in about fifteen minutes. Then he called his mom to tell her of their plans as well.

"Hey mom, thanks for our lunch. It was great. We are leaving here in about fifteen minutes so you and Harriet can head on over at any time after then to get everything set up…yep, I have everything…yes ma'am. I love you too." Harm sat on the couch going through his mental checklist feeling ready and excited, but just a little nervous. Harm heard the door open and stood up to walk towards her. Mac stepped out in such a beautiful dress…he felt like a kid in the candy shop.

"Wow, Sarah, you look…stunning." Mac smiles as she twirled around.

"Harriet did well, didn't she? I love the way this material feels on my skin."

"I think I'm going to love the way it feels on my skin too." They both smiled at each other for a bit.

"You look quite dashing Commander Rabb. I always did like your winter mess dress." Why thank you Ms. Mackenzie and may I add that you literally took my breath away when you stepped into the room a moment ago."

"Thank you kind sir."

"Shall we?"

"We shall." Harm offered her his arm and led her out of the apartment and down to the elevator. As they entered Mrs. Peterson was getting off.

"Oh, my don't you both make a lovely couple. Where are you off to this evening?"

"Thank you Mrs. Peterson." Mac said. "We are on our way to the White House Christmas ball. May I introduce you to someone very special to me. This is Commander Harmon Rabb."

"Nice to meet you ma'am." Harm shook her hand and brought it up to his lips.

"Oh my…you are quite charming aren't you? Well you two kids have a wonderful time." Harm and Mac made their way down to the town car that was waiting for them. The driver held the door open for Mac as Harm made his way around to the other side.

"Sir, the item you requested was picked up and is waiting for you on the side console."

"Thank you." Harm sat, reaching across he grabbed her seatbelt and gently kissed her as he did so. Locking the seat belt buckle into place he sat back on his side and in doing so he noticed that he had smeared her lipstick so he used his thumb to swipe the errant strays of red along the bottom of her lip.

"That was much too short of a kiss Commander, but thank you for fixing my lips. What do you have there?"

"Don't laugh ok…"

"Ok…" Harm opened the container and lifted the wrist corsage out.

"My mom said I had to buy you a corsage, and then after she saw your dress she changed the order to a wrist corsage instead of the bouquet I had ordered. I hope you don't mind."

"Mind…I love it. I haven't had anyone buy me a corsage since my grandfather died. He used to buy me an Easter corsage every year and when he died I was about eight and anything special like that died with him." Harm didn't really know how to respond to that, was she happy, sad. I think she was happy so I'm going to go with that.

"Glad I was able to bring back a happy memory…I think." Mac leaned her head on his shoulder as he slipped the elastic around her wrist.

"Very happy…" The traffic was congested but Harm had planned for their arrival to be earlier than necessary in case Webb was able to pull off his request.

President Bush had just approved this last minute request by one of his guests via the CIA agent standing in front of him.

"Webb, this is highly irregular but seeing as how these are two highly decorated officers and Laura just fell in love with the story you shared I have decided to allow it. Have the Commander and the Colonel enter like all the other guests and then you can show the guard when they arrive so that they can be escorted back.

"Yes, Sir, Thank you again sir. I really owe these guys into the middle of next year and this will make them both so happy. Mom says hi by the way."

"Very well, Clayton. Tell Porter that Laura and I really enjoyed those baskets she sent over for Thanksgiving. By the way…Laura prepared a little something for them when they get to their destination."

"Will do Mr. President. Thanks again."

"Sir, we are in the arrival line. It shouldn't be too long now."

"Thank you Kyle. I will call you when we are ready to be picked up."

"Very Good Commander."

Harm stepped out as Kyle made his way around the car to open the door for Mac. Harm made his way to her offering her his arm as their photo was taken by multiple members of the press. Harm looked over to Mac and smiled as she looked up into his eyes. Making their way down the receiving line and to the security checkpoint took little time and before they knew it they were stepping in front of the President and first lady. Standing at attention Harm awaited the standard order.

"As you were Commander. You must be Colonel Mackenzie…my wife Laura…"

"It is so wonderful to meet you both. I really appreciate the efforts you are making to support the troops, sir."

"We are indebted to the men and women who protect our great nation. It's the least we can do."

"And Ma'am your work to assist the families of fallen or wounded soldiers is inspiring. You advocate tirelessly on their behalf. Thank you very much."

"Colonel, you speak eloquently on behalf of your passions. It's women like you that I hope continue to provide positive role models to our next generations of women in the military. Thank you for addressing me and not just my husband. These nights can get rather dull when everyone just wants two minutes with the president. You would be surprised how many people think their idea and two minutes will sway his mind in any direction." Both women giggled as they continued to hold onto each other's arms.

"Maybe we should just let them sit together this evening. They seem to be quite content to chat the night away, huh Commander. Oh by the way. Everything has been arranged and you will both be escorted shortly by that guard over there." The president nodded in the direction of the guard and he acknowledged that his mark had been targeted by speaking into his sleeve.

"Thank you Mr. President…I…well…this is really an amazing opportunity you have allotted me."

"Happy to give just a little back to you both. You have very impressive service records. Oh and good luck son…she is like no other marine I have ever seen." Harm smiled and said.

"That she is sir. Thank you again."

Harm placed his hand on the underside of Mac's elbow to guide her down the line and to the guard waiting for them. Mac looked over at Harm when she realized they were being led away from the other guests. "Harm, where are we going?"

"You'll see. We will be there shortly." They walked in the darkness quietly being led by the guard a few steps in front of them.

"Right through there sir. I will be waiting here to escort you back." Then he leaned in and quietly said, "you have about 10 minutes."

"Yes, thanks…Right this way Sarah." Harm grabbed her hand and they walked through the small gate guided by candles along the way. They followed the path of candles to a bench that was surrounded by roses. A freshly cut bouquet resting on the bench.

"Harm, what is all this?" Taking a deep breath he began.

"Sarah…we are in the very spot that my world changed for the better all those years ago. This is the rose garden we met in. I petitioned the president to be allowed a moment of time so that we could start our evening off quietly and peacefully admiring the beauty that helped our relationship to blossom all those years ago."

"Harm, this is so touching. So very special and thoughtful of you to arrange this for us." Harm just smiled.

"I know it's cold out here so I don't want us to stay out here too long but there is something very important I would like to discuss with you, so if you will allow me…"

"By all means…"

"Sarah, it can be argued that we are two of the most stubborn individuals in D.C. but we are also two of the most loving, loyal and intensely passionate individuals as well. We have watched each other at our best and worst. We have defended and protected each other fiercely all within the safe boundaries of friendship. We have struggled with our pasts, our obsessions and our fears and in the end we are always standing right beside each other as we rise from the ashes. It is in these moments that I find the most peace, and tranquility like I have never felt. I have come to realize that as long as we are together we can get through anything and with that realization I realized that I know that I can't do this life without you." Harm knelt in front of her as he pulled the red ring box out of his pants pocket. Mac gasped as she covered her mouth with her hand. "Sarah Catherine Mackenzie, I have never felt about anyone on this earth the way I feel about you. You challenge me to be a better version of myself than I ever thought possible. It would be my greatest honor if you would allow me the privilege of becoming your husband. Will you marry me?" Harm reached up to grab her left hand in the hopes that she would say yes.

"Harm…I love you more and more each day, as you said we are better together in everything we do and I can't wait to have you as my husband. Yes…I will marry you." Harm stood up and pulled her up close to him as he hugged her. Stepping back he opened the ring box and began to place the ring on her finger. She looked down at her hand. Then she grabbed both sides of his face and pulled him in for a loving kiss. "Sailor, you sure know how to sweep a girl off her feet. This ring is just perfect."

"It was Grams, Sarah…when I told her I wanted you to be my future she gave it to me. It's the same ring my grandfather gave her the day he graduated from Annapolis. I had a few stones added to it though. I wanted it to represent our past and our future. So these stones here represent the years we've known each other and these smaller spacers can be filled in throughout our journey."

"This is perfect and so thoughtful too. I have to say, I like this side of you, Harm."

"I surprise even myself at times." They both chuckled. Harm picked up the bouquet and gave it to Mac. The first lady was hoping you would say yes…she had this bouquet prepared from the roses in the greenhouse since these bushes are dormant at the moment. She thought it would be a nice memento to have."

"That was so nice of her. We will have to be sure to say thank you before we leave for the evening."

"Sir, it's time, and by the way, congratulations to you both."

"Thank you special agent. That's our cue Sarah…the dinner is about to be presented so we need to get to our table." Harm offered her his arm once more and he escorted them back to the main ballroom for the remainder of the evening. It was a magical evening with good food, and great music. They danced well into the evening and were honored when the president and the first lady both danced with them as well. Harm made the call as the evening began to wind down and Kyle said he would be in line to gather them within the next ten minutes. They began to say their thank you's before their departure and were flabbergasted when they received an invitation to dine privately with the President and first lady in the near future.

"Harm, this has been the most magical night of my life. Thank you."

"Nights not over Gorgeous. Just you wait and see." Mac seductively began to glide her hand up and down his thigh and with each pass she got higher and closer to his hardening cock. "Baby, don't start something you can't finish. We'll be home before you know it and I have one more surprise for you."

"Please don't tell me you have a party of people waiting at my apartment for us. I just want to be with you all by ourselves and enjoy the last few hours of our evening as a newly engaged couple."

"Nope…not a party of well wishers, just you and me and time to finally explore our passion uninterrupted."

"Good, because I don't know how much will power I have left." Just then his phone pinged that he had a message. Looking down he saw the thumbs up and smiled.

"Sir, we have arrived." Kyle stepped out one last time to open Mac's door as Harm rounded the car to escort her back up to the apartment.

"Thanks again Kyle" Harm slipped his tip into his hand as he shook his hand. Guiding Mac into the elevator she asked.

"Are you feeling ok…I was so distracted by my happiness that I totally forgot you should still be taking it easy."

"I'm good Sarah. We might have to take things a little slow in the celebrating realm but I look forward to the day when I can fully participate." They walked hand in hand towards the door before she handed him her keys to open the door.

"I will be happy to explore every inch of you, thanking you for the best night of my life to date." Harm opened the door and they walked into a flicker of fire by the candles that were lit all around the apartment. The lovely scent of jasmine filled the air.

"Sarah, my last surprise for you…the scent of jasmine fills the air to represent the sweet love we share." Leading her through the living room and the sea of flowers that were everywhere he explained to her the language of the flowers his mother had taught him all those years ago and the gracious refresher course a few days ago… "White lilies to show you that my love is pure…Red tulips stating my declaration of love…honeysuckle to show you my devotion and affection…daisies state that I love you truly…and Hyacinthe to say that your loveliness charms me heart and soul…Now if you will follow me this way." Harm led her into the bedroom where the candles were concentrated around the night stands. Mac gasped as she stepped in behind him. She was overwhelmed with tulips in every size and color imaginable. "Tulips in every size and color to represent the passion that we share for each other and one lone calla lily floating in a bowl of water to represent your beauty." Mac turned around taking it all in and as she did Harm noticed the glistening in her eyes. Her sweet tears cascading down her cheeks. He stepped closer to swipe them away. "I hope those are happy tears my sweet princess."

"Harm, I am blown away. You…I've…wow. I'm speechless. No one has ever put this much thought into making my every dream come true. Did you know that my favorite flowers are tulips?"

"I did…did you know what they meant?"

"I didn't but it makes it even more special knowing that you chose them two fold." Mac beckoned him with her finger. Harm walked to her. She raised her arms around his neck and began to kiss him passionately. Sliding his arms around her waist he ran his hands down the silky material to her perfect little six. Grabbing handfuls towards him as he thrusted forward in a most intimate way. She moaned into his mouth as she felt his hardness against her abdomen. Pulling her hands forward she unclipped his jacket and slipped it down his arms forcing him to release her six. As the jacket fell to the floor she unclipped his cumberband next, then his buttons on his dress shirt and bowtie. She unbuttoned his pants and let them fall to the floor as he toed off his shoes and socks and lifted his undershirt above his head. Showing extra care with his injured side. Standing there in his boxers she raised her hands once more to ruffle her fingers through his hair.

"There…that's better." He just laughed making a mental note that she enjoyed the spiked look or maybe it was the sleepy look.

"I think you have me at a disadvantage my dear."

"Well what are you going to do about it?" Turning her around he unhooked the strap behind her neck and the zipper down the side of the dress that he accidentally found while dancing with her. As the dress began to slip down her body he was rewarded with the undergarments that had been hidden beneath all evening.

"Wow…I'm glad I didn't know what was hiding underneath all night. I may have been charged with actions unbecoming an officer."

"Enough talk handsome." Mac led him to the bed and had him lay down in the middle. She straddled his legs, crawling her way up the sides of his body. Grabbing the bottom of the negligee she pulled it over her head and was rewarded when she noticed his boxers tenting. With only her thong and strapless bra left she began kissing his earlobe down his neck to the base of his throat. She could feel his pulse and gently sucked leaving a light mark that would definitely bruise in the next few days. "Oops, sorry, got a little carried away."

"Carry me anywhere you want. I'm your from now until eternity." Mac continued to kiss and touch and stroke as Harm lifted his arms to unclasp her bra. He sat up forcing Mac to sit up as he attacked one nipple with his mouth while the other one received attention from his thumb and forefinger. He had her so distracted that she didn't realize his other hand traveled down to rub her sensitive nub through her thong. Pulling it to the side he began to massage her from the inside, finding her spot almost immediately. She began to breathe in short breaths, moaning his name. She was so close, he could feel her inner walls contracting… "Don't hold back…come for me baby. I want you to come for me." And that was all it took…

"Harmon…" Falling forward as she recovered he gently continued to stroke her and pinch her nipple bringing his mouth to hers in another searing case. "Oh, Harm. That was amazing. Lie back for me." Harm laid back on the bed as she crawled off of him to remove his boxers. Standing before him in nothing but a thong he suddenly realized that every one of his fantasies was nowhere near as good as the Sarah Mackenzie standing naked before him in the flesh. She stepped out of her thong and straddled him once more. Grabbing a hold of him she placed her other hand on the bed by his head and guided his length into her for their last first time. It was a spiritual moment and the moment wasn't lost on them. Their eyes locked when he said.

"Harm?"

"I feel it too Sarah." The moments their souls united had finally happened and it was like finding your true north, your guiding star and home all at once. He grabbed her hips as she dropped her other hand to the other side of his head. She began to glide up and down slowly as she adjusted to his size. It was a wonderful feeling to have such fullness inside her. She truly felt as if she had found her other half. Back and forth, up and down, over and over. Harm was doing his best to hold it together…he wanted her to have one more before he let go. Two if he was lucky. Focusing on his upwards thrusts as she drove down into him it wasn't long before he felt her inner walls contracting once more. "Yes, baby, again, come for me again."

"Want to go together…" Mac managed to get out between breaths.

"We will, give me one more first. You can do it baby." He brought his thumb to her bud and began applying pressure on every upward thrust.

"Oh Harm…Fuck!"

"That's my Marine…" Harm began kissing her and pinching her nipples as he continued to thrust faster and faster. She hadn't really finished riding out her last orgasm before the pressure began building again. "Yes, yes…Oh Sarah. I'm right there baby…are you close?" He went to apply pressure once more to her bud and before she knew it they were both tumbling over the edge together. As they rode the blissful orgasmic wave down and their breathing slowed Harm moved her hair to the side. "Sarah, that was the most wonderful intimate moment of my life. That was amazing."

"Harm…three times. Three times…I've never in my life had three orgasms in one sexual experience. Now I understand the whole sex vs. making love thing. That was so much more meaningful and wonderful because I know that I am safe in every way with you. It was like a religious experience in the world of MacRabbville."

"MacRabbville…I like it. Shall we live there and raise our kids there? Oh shit…Sarah, I totally forgot to use a condom. I'm so sorry baby."

"Harm, it's ok."

"No it's not…Frank always told me if I truly respect the woman I was with I wouldn't expect her to worry about protection."

"Harm, I'm not worried about it…I don't want a long engagement. I can't wait to be Mrs. Sarah Rabb. If I am pregnant then so be it. I look forward to the day we fulfill that baby deal.

"I'm so glad you said that. I don't want to wait either and if you are ok with it then my mother, Harriet and I have already begun planning a New Year's Eve wedding celebration…super small, and intimate but beautifully done. What do you say?"

"I say sign me up." She slid off of the top of him and snuggled up close. Do you need anything Hunny?"

"I love that you called me that."

"Well then Hunny shall be my term of endearment from here until the end of time." Harm smiled as she placed her head over his heart, her arm across his chest and her leg on top of his. He reached down for the comforter and covered as she drifted off to sleep. Yep he could definitely get used to this."

The End

Their will be a follow up to this story eventually but it will be titled "Life beckons"
