Scott scowled as he tugged at the tie he had been forced to wear. "Can someone please tell me why this engagement party is a black tie event?" Ellie just shrugged her shoulders, unable to bring herself to protest. She was kind of in love with the dress that Kurt had picked out for her to wear, after all.
It was this gorgeous black dress that fell to just about her knees and had an intricate gold design on the front. Her hair, while not as curly as Abby's, was still pretty wavy and was swept to the side. It was held in place with a gold pin at the nape of her neck and was so ornate that she didn't even need any other kind of jewelry. Kurt had even talked Ellie into wearing a pair of black, strappy heels. Ellie considered it a minor miracle that she was still upright and walking.
Of course, Abby had heard Scott complaining. "Stop whining, big brother," she ordered. Abby was bold and beautiful in a red, strapless cocktail dress with an embellished skirt. Kurt nearly had a fit when Abby decided she wanted to wear red instead of white, but Rachel had quickly put an end to that protest when she told him to shut up.
Abby smiled gleefully. "Besides," she continued. "This is nothing compared to the tux you'll have to wear during the ceremony."
Scott rolled his eyes. "You just had to do the whole princess thing with your wedding, didn't you?"
"Not all of us can have a destination beach wedding, Scotty." Abby patted her older brother's cheek and then held her arm out to Ellie. "Come with me, little sis. Kurt is currently trying to convince Mom that we need bright yellow bridesmaid dresses."
Ellie blanched. "No. Absolutely not." Really, she loved her Uncle Kurt. But his fashion sense was just too much sometimes.
The two sisters managed to reach their mother in time before she attempted to strangle Kurt for making outlandish suggestions about the bridesmaid dresses for Abby's wedding. Since he didn't succeed in getting feathers on the wedding dress, he was passionately campaigning for them to be added to the bridesmaid dresses.
"Uncle Kurt, there's maybe like two people in the whole world that look good in feathers," Ellie stated. But she didn't even hear Kurt's rebuttal because she was immediately distracted by the young man that was talking to her brother. Pulling Abby away from the argument that Rachel and Kurt (and somehow their Aunt Santana had gotten involved) were in, Ellie pointed to the man.
"Who is Scott talking to?" Ellie demanded.
"That's Nathan O'Neill," Abby said. "He's Scott's new partner." Scott was a detective and had quickly made a name for himself at his department. Scott had been paired with an older detective who had recently retired, so Scott was up for a new partner. Ellie hadn't heard much about the new guy, but she did know that he had been working with Scott for a few months now and they got along really well.
And... well. Ellie knew she was practically gawking, but she couldn't seem to stop. He was tall, practically as tall as her father or either of her brothers. He had dark, thick hair and she could see his dimpled smile from across the room. Those dimples were already making Ellie want to melt into a puddle.
Abby watched her younger sister with a knowing smile on her lips. For some reason, she wasn't surprised that Ellie immediately developed a crush on Scott's new partner. "Nathan has hung out with Mason and Scott a lot out of work, so they all get along pretty well. And he's only twenty-four."
Ellie managed to tear her eyes away from Nathan O'Neill long enough to give her sister a sharp look. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Oh nothing." Abby waved her hand dismissively. Secretly, she was doing a happy dance on the inside. She had to get Nathan and Ellie to meet somehow. The more she thought about it, the more she realized they would be perfect for each other. "But you should also be interested to know that Nathan is a part of the wedding party." Without giving Ellie time to respond to that particular piece of information, Abby spun and yelled across the room, "Hey Scott! Nathan! Get over here!"
Ellie cursed the pale complexion she inherited from her father. She might have looked like a mini-Rachel clone, but she had her father's coloring and it was showcasing just how red her cheeks were. She had half a mind to jab Abby in the side, but Scott and Nathan were already approaching and there was no way she could get away with it.
Nathan caught Ellie's eye and he smiled, flashing only one of those dimples this time. Ellie had to remind herself not to grin like too much of an idiot when she smiled in return. Really, her biggest concern at the moment was making sure that Abby didn't do something too incredibly embarrassing.
Of course, that was too much to hope for. "I figured that everyone in the wedding party should get to know each other," Abby said with a straight face. She was managing to pull off a nonchalant air very well, but Scott saw right through it and was giving her a suspicious look. "So Nathan, I'd like you to meet our little sister, Ellie. Ellie, this is Scott's new partner Nathan."
Nathan extended his hand towards Ellie. "Nice to finally meet you, Ellie," he said. There was the barest hint of a Brooklyn accent when he spoke, and Ellie found it incredibly endearing. "I've heard quite a bit about you."
Ellie slipped her hand into Nathan's and felt her cheeks heat up even further when his warm fingers wrapped around hers. Seriously, she didn't doubt that she looked like a tomato. "I'm sure Scott has all sorts of stories for you," she said. "But you should also know that we have just as many stories about him. If you ever want any good material to tease him with, just come to me."
Scott scoffed and crossed his arms over his chest. "Oh really?" he demanded. "What could you possibly have on me?"
"Let's see." Ellie held up one finger. "There was that time that Abby was babysitting us and you came home completely trashed and she didn't know what to do so she called Mom and Dad. There was that time when you locked yourself out of the house and tried to get in through an open window on the second floor but our neighbor thought you were a burglar so they called the police on you. There was also the time that—"
"Okay, I think that's enough!" Scott exclaimed. Ellie looked very smug, but that look instantly disappeared from her face when Scott zeroed in on the way that her hand was still tucked in Nathan's. "Why are you guys still holding hands?"
Nathan and Ellie immediately let go of each other. Ellie wondered if it was possible for her cheeks to burst into flames, they were that hot. Abby was extremely pleased with herself, and Ellie knew that she was going to be hearing about this for a while.
Before Nathan could even say anything, Scott pushed him towards the other end of the room. "Come on, I think we need to rescue Mason from my ancient great Aunt Monica." Scott didn't even let them say goodbye before he was towing his friend and partner across the room.
As soon as they were gone, Sophie was at her side. "Who was that?" she exclaimed. "He was hot! And he was totally into you."
Ellie opened her mouth to respond, but it was Abby who answered for her. "I know, right! He's Scott's new partner. They would be so cute together!"
Sophie clapped her hands in excitement. "Ellie, you could totally have slutty wedding sex with him!"
"No I couldn't!" Ellie exclaimed. She glanced around to make sure no one heard them before she leveled her older sister with a pointed look. "Scott totally caught on to what you were doing, by the way. There's no way he'll let me near Nathan now."
That smug look was back on Abby's face. "He wouldn't have made a big deal out of it if he didn't think Nathan was sending you any vibes."
"So true," Sophie added. She was just as gleeful as Abby was, and it kind of made Ellie want to punch both of them. They were getting far too much enjoyment out of this. "I could see it from all the way across the room!"
Ellie peeked over at Nathan, wondering if what her older sister and her best friend was true. Did Nathan like her? They had only spoken for a grand total of thirty seconds, and even that had only been some basic introductions.
Still, there was the way that he held onto her hand...
Ellie was pulled from her musings when she realized that Nathan was watching her in return. He smiled directly at her, and Ellie grinned back at him.
"Oh yeah," Abby said as she nudged Sophie. "They totally like each other."
Now it's Ellie's turn. :)
