Rachel surveyed the outfits laid out before and nodded her head approvingly. This Saturday night would be absolutely perfect, of that she was sure. There was no way that the Hudson family wasn't going to win the costume contest.
It was Halloween weekend, and Finn and Rachel were taking the kids to the Hudson-Hummel house, like they did every year. They would do some trick-or-treating early in the night and then they would attend the party that Burt and Carole hosted. And every single year, Burt and Carole had a costume contest.
Finn and Rachel won the first year they were married with a Batman and Catwoman combo. They won again after Abby was born, when Finn and Rachel had dressed up as Mr. and Mrs. Pacman and had dressed the kids up as the ghosts.
Since Kurt and Blaine had won for the past three years (last year they were Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum), however, Rachel was determined to end the streak. She started brainstorming costumes in February, and had finally settled on the perfect ones for the whole family in June.
"Babe! Kurt is here to pick up the kids!" Finn called down the hall. Finn and Rachel had date night at least twice a month, and Kurt had volunteered to babysit the kids. It was easy to keep the older kids entertained, and Kurt and Blaine had a son around the same age as Evan.
Rachel threw herself against the bedroom door in order to keep it from being opened. "Don't let him in the bedroom!" she yelled. "He's not allowed to see our costumes!"
On the other side of the door, Finn didn't even bother to try and stifle his laughter. He could hear Rachel scrambling around the room as she hid their Halloween costumes safely away. Finally, she yanked open the door and smiled widely at her husband.
"Ready!" she announced. She grabbed her purse, stood on her tiptoes and pressed a kiss to Finn's lips, and then darted past him so she could say goodbye to the kids. By the time Finn joined her downstairs, Rachel had little Evan scooped up in her arms and was cuddling him as she dropped kisses to Scott, Abby, and Ellie's heads.
Kurt, meanwhile, was rolling his eyes. "Don't worry, Rachel. I won't try and find your precious Halloween costumes."
"Good," Rachel said firmly. "Because we're definitely going to win." She handed her youngest son to Kurt and patted the top of Kurt's artfully messy hair. "Have fun tonight!"
Finn shrugged his shoulders as he passed his brother. They were all used to Rachel's determination to win by now. Once Rachel Berry-Hudson set her mind on something, she typically got what she wanted.
Rachel adjusted the orange hat on the top of Evan's head. Surprisingly enough, the year old baby didn't seem to mind having to wear the hat. He gave his mother a toothy smile and she beamed at him in return.
Scott patted the big, orange orb that was surrounding his body. "Momma, this is a really cool costume!" he exclaimed.
Rachel shared an amused look with Finn. This year, Rachel had dressed all the kids up as pumpkins. Just in case she had to talk Scott into the idea, Rachel had picked a big pumpkin body suit for her oldest son to wear. Scott was pretty excited about it and kept pretending that he was an orange wrecking ball. The costume was built in such a way that when Scott ran into something, he bounced off of it, so he was having the time of his life.
Abby and Ellie were wearing matching pumpkin dresses, complete with tutus and curly green ribbon. Of course, Evan was dressed in the traditional pumpkin costume for babies and he couldn't have looked more adorable.
Once it had been decided that the kids were going to be pumpkins, it was easy to pick the costumes for Finn and Rachel. A pair of overalls for Finn, a cute overall dress for Rachel, and two plaid shirts later, and they were well on their way to being scarecrows (the best looking scarecrows ever, if you asked Rachel).
Of course, Rachel had diligently watched some YouTube make up tutorials so they could replicate the proper scarecrow look. Honestly, there was no way they wouldn't win the costume contest. The winners were determined by having the whole party vote, and Rachel was willing to spend the entire time campaigning for them.
They had arrived at Burt and Carole's house, and Finn was waiting for Rachel to put the final finishing touches on their costumes before they entered the party. Finally, Finn pulled Rachel close and pressed a tender kiss to her lips.
"The costumes are perfect, Rach," Finn said. "Now let's go and have some fun."
A beautiful smile spread across Rachel's lips, and it was that smile that she saved especially for Finn. "I love you," she said sweetly.
Finn took in his smiling kids and his beautiful wife. "I love you, too. Now let's go win this contest!"
Okay, so I'm a little late with the Halloween chapter, but I tried! There will probably be a second part to this chapter, too. :)
