Part II of the Halloween party.
Finn watched in amusement as his son ran into the wall, only to bounce off of it due to his costume. He had to admit that Rachel really knew what she was doing when she picked out the outfit for Scott. He was getting a kick out of running into things (and people).
"Your kid is insane, Hudson," Puck announced. He took a swig from the beer he was holding and frowned when the fake fangs in his mouth hit the bottle. Instead of removing the teeth like anyone else would, Puck jammed the bottle between his fake fangs and tilted his head back.
"You're insane," Finn retorted as he watched the display. Puck was dressed as a vampire, complete with a cape, pale skin, and fake dried blood around his mouth. It was quite a contrast from Quinn's costume—she was dressed as a go-go girl. She was cradling ten-month old Todd in her arms, and he was in a little teddy bear costume and looked as cute as a button.
Puck shrugged his shoulders and popped the beer bottle out of his mouth. He grinned, revealing the fake fangs that were stained with blood. Finn rolled his eyes and supposed that he should just be thankful that Puck's costume wasn't anymore gruesome than it needed to be. There were children at this party, after all.
Speaking of children, Finn realized that both of his daughters weren't in his immediate vicinity. With his brow furrowed in concern, Finn surveyed the area around him and brushed some of the straw from his costume out of his eyes (Rachel really wanted the scarecrow costumes to be as authentic as possible).
Puck, as a fellow parent, knew what Finn was doing. "Abby and Beth are with Burt. The last time I saw Sophie and Ellie, they were hanging around the station where everyone was bobbing for apples."
"And you just left them there?" Finn asked as his eyebrows shot up. Ellie was extraordinarily well-behaved, even at just over three years old. Sophie, on the other hand, often got herself into trouble and was constantly pulling Ellie into those situations with her. Though they were young, everyone knew that the two girls were going to be a handful.
Puck handed Finn an open beer. "Well, Kurt was with them…" He trailed off when he realized exactly what had just come out of his mouth. While Kurt was great with the kids and loved watching them, it was always with Ellie and Sophie that he found himself in trouble. "We've got to find them," Puck finished.
Finn snorted. "Yeah." They began to make their way through the party. Derek, Blaine and Kurt's two year old son toddled by as Blaine chased after him. Little Derek was dressed as a tiger, and Blaine was wearing a safari costume. Clearly, Blaine was focused on his own child and not his husband or his nieces.
Finn saw a flash of curly brunette hair and knew that it was Ellie. Just as Puck said, they were by the bobbing for apples station. Just as Finn turned to tell Puck, they heard a loud splash and then two high-pitched voices saw, "Uh-oh…" simultaneously.
Puck and Finn arrived at the station just in time to see Kurt plucking Sophie from the bin where the apples were floating. She was wearing a black and green dress with a pointed witch's hat still perched atop her now soaking wet head. Ellie was holding onto Sophie's skirt—clearly, she had tried to stop Sophie from falling into the bin. As a tiny three year old little girl, she hadn't really been able to stop the situation from happening.
Both Finn and Puck stood there, watching the scene unfold in front of them. Neither of them really knew what to say or do. How was it that two toddlers could cause so much trouble?
"Um…" Kurt was holding a soaking wet Sophie against his chest and he didn't seem to take notice of the fact that he was getting his costume wet (he was wearing a safari tour guide outfit that matched Blaine's). "I guess Sophie and Ellie wanted to see what bobbing for apples were like and they got a little too much into it…" He trailed off and shrugged his shoulders apologetically.
Puck plucked his daughter from Kurt's arms. She smiled sweetly at her father, and Puck chuckled and shook his head. "I should get you cleaned up before your mom notices what happened," he said. He headed towards the bathroom on a mission to make Sophie as presentable as possible before the costume contest.
Finn patted Kurt on the back reassuringly and then scooped Ellie up into his arms. "You're a troublemaker, munchkin. Did you know that?" he tapped her on the nose, causing the little girl to giggle.
"Am not, Daddy," she retorted.
That was the moment that Rachel appeared with Evan in her arms. Scott and Abby were following behind her, and she thankfully seemed unaware of what had just happened with Sophie and Ellie. Rachel adjusted the little hat on Ellie's head and then turned to inspect Finn's costume.
When she was satisfied with his appearance, she nodded her head resolutely. "Are you ready? Your parents said that the contest was starting soon. I want to head up to the stage to make sure we can get the last spot."
Finn couldn't help but grin at that statement. Rachel believed that having the last spot in a competition like this would work to their advantage and leave a lasting impression with everyone. Finn adjusted Ellie so he was holding her with one arm and then pulled Rachel towards him with his free hand. He pressed a soft, tender kiss to her lips, and she relaxed against him.
"Relax, baby," Finn said. "It's going to be great."
Rachel beamed at him and together, the whole family headed towards the stage for the costume contest.
Together, the entire Hudson family crouched around the first place trophy. Rachel was smiling so widely that Finn was actually concerned her face was going to split in half. Of course, they had taken a picture with the kids and trophy, Finn and Rachel with the trophy, just Rachel with the trophy, and then the whole family with the trophy.
"I just knew we would win," Rachel said. "How could we not? Our costumes were amazing."
Now that the excitement was over, the kids were getting tired. Little Evan was fast asleep in Finn's arms, and Ellie was sitting on the floor, leaning against Rachel's legs. Her eyes were half-open, and she most certainly was going to fall asleep at any second. Abby was stubbornly trying to stay awake, but she was looking pretty beat. Scott was just sitting on the floor with the trophy in his hands, tired but happy with how the night had ended.
Burt and Carole approached the happy family. Carole held her hands out for her youngest grandson, and Finn passed the sleeping boy over. "We'll take the kids up and put them to bed," Carole said. "You two enjoy the rest of the party. You have a lot to celebrate, you know."
Finn and Rachel kissed their kids goodnight, and then Rachel grabbed Finn's hand and dragged him onto the dance floor. Of course, Finn wasn't going to deny her a dance, despite the fact that he had absolutely zero sense of rhythm.
Rachel took Finn's hands as she bounced excitedly up and down to the beat of the music. "You know, we have to start thinking about next year's costumes. We're going to have to top this year!"
"Rach." Finn pulled his wife close and changed their movements to a sway despite the fast pace of the song. "We just won this year. I think you can take a break before you start planning."
Rachel's face was determined as she clenched her fists around the straps of his overalls to make her point. "But we have to think about next year, Finn!"
Finn couldn't help but laugh. He should have known better.
I just have too much fun writing Finchel fluff!
