Finn watched as Rachel anxiously paced back and forth. He reached for her hand as she passed him again and tugged her to a stop. "Honey, you have to calm down. Everything will be okay."
"Well of course I know that everything is going to be alright, Finn Hudson," Rachel stated. Of course everything was going to be okay. How could it not? There would be no other outcome.
"Will you just sit down, then?" Finn suggested. "Kurt will be back with some coffee any second now. The rest of the kids should be getting here within the hour. Ellie already said that she'd pick up Evan."
Rachel sighed and sat down in the chair next to her husband. She grabbed his hand and squeezed it tightly, and she was unable to keep the beaming grin off of her lips. "We're going to have our first grandchild, Finn."
Finn and Rachel were currently sitting in the hospital, waiting to hear from Blaire and Scott. Blaire had gone into labor early that morning, and now they were mere hours away from meeting the newest Hudson baby.
Having been unable to focus on anything else since Scott had called them, Rachel had gathered up the care package she made for Blaire and had dragged Finn to the hospital. She had been coordinating the arrival of Baby Hudson by keeping the rest of their family apprised of what was going on while Finn just watched and made sure she didn't go too crazy. Currently, Quinn and Santana were in charge of making sure that the nursery was put together, Puck was getting food, Kurt was getting coffee, and Blaine was gathering the younger boys to bring them to the hospital.
"Have you heard from Abby yet?" Finn asked. "Ellie said that she'd be here in the next fifteen minutes, and I'm sure she's bringing Sophie with her."
Abby and Mason had just returned from their honeymoon two days ago. They were thrilled that they had come home in time to be there for the birth of their fist nephew. Of course, when Abby had heard that Blaire had gone into labor, she had gone to the nearest store and bought out all of the stuffed animals they had.
Rachel checked her phone and saw that there was message from Abby saying that she and Mason were on their way. "They should get here around the same time that Ellie does," Rachel said. She craned her neck towards the double doors leading into the maternity ward in an effort to see if Scott was coming to give them an update. She made a noise of annoyance in the back of her throat when she saw no one was headed in their direction. "I wish we could just know already!"
Finn knew that Rachel wasn't talking about if the baby had born yet or not. She was instead referring to the fact that they didn't know if they were having a granddaughter or a grandson. Rachel had been trying to get Blaire to find out since beginning of the pregnancy, but she hadn't budged.
"Rach, just let it go already," Finn said. "You're going to find out in a couple of hours anyway."
Rachel pouted. "They won't even tell me what names they're thinking about."
"Baby." Finn pulled Rachel into his arms and kissed her forehead. "Let the kids figure it out. We did a pretty good job with them, after all."
Leaning back in his arms, Rachel smiled. "You're right. We did do a pretty great job with those kids."
The double doors to the waiting room swung open and Ellie came bustling in holding a blue and white floral arrangement and a platter of cookies. Sophie was right behind her, and her blonde hair was knotted messily on top of her head and she had large sunglasses covering her face.
"I didn't know what to bring, so I just picked out these cookies," Ellie chattered. Finn blinked at how quickly his daughter was speaking, and Rachel pressed her lips together to hide her smile.
"Sweetie, how much coffee have you had today?" Rachel asked.
Ellie shrugged her shoulders while Sophie snorted. "I don't know. I had a cup of coffee this morning and I just finished a latte. We had to make a stop because someone needed the extra caffeine."
"It's not like you were complaining, you know," Sophie pointed out.
Finn chuckled. "Aw, Soph. Are you hung over?"
Sophie thrust a finger in Finn's direction. "No one asked you, Uncle Finn," she snapped half-heartedly.
Kurt came bustling through the double doors just then, and he somehow managed to hold two full carry-on containers of coffee. Ellie jumped up and relieved her uncle of one of the trays and immediately plucked one of the coffees from the tray.
"Didn't you say that you just finished some coffee?" Finn asked his youngest daughter.
"Yeah." Ellie shrugged her shoulders as she added a packet of cream and half a packet of sugar. "So?"
Finn and Rachel shared an amused glance. Ellie's obsession with coffee certainly surpassed her parents'. God help the person that kept Ellie from her coffee.
"Have we heard anything yet?" Ellie asked as she settled back in her seat. She adjusted one of the blue hydrangeas in the flower arrangement she bought and took another sip of her coffee. She was so excited to meet her new niece or nephew, and, like her mother, she was fairly impatient.
"Not yet," Rachel muttered.
Kurt pulled a shopping bag out of the satchel he had slung over his shoulder. "Well, no matter if it's a boy or a girl, I've come prepared with several outfits. This will be the best dressed baby in New York City." Kurt wrinkled his nose as he cast a withering glare in Finn and Rachel's direction. "Scott might have inherited your terrible fashion sense, but at least Blaire knows how to dress properly."
Rachel completely ignored her brother-in-law while Finn just rolled his eyes. "Kurt, leave the poor kid alone." Finn could tell that he was already going to have protect his grandchild from crazy Uncle Kurt. God only knew he had enough practice protecting his own children.
"Well, I won't be getting a grandchild from Derek for at least another five years if he knows what's good for him," Kurt said, referring to his and Blaine's twenty year old son.
"I already feel bad for the kid," Finn mumbled under his breath while Rachel bit back her laughter.
Kurt's eyes narrowed in a dangerous glare. "What was that, Finn Hudson?"
"Nothing."
The waiting doors swung open again, and Blaine appeared with Evan, Todd, and Derek in tow. Abby and Mason were only seconds behind the boys, and Ellie's mouth dropped open when she saw them. She hadn't seen her older sister and her new husband since they had returned from their honeymoon.
Instead of saying hello, Ellie immediately exclaimed, "Oh my god, you're so tan!"
Abby grinned and flipped her long, dark hair over her shoulder. "Of course I am. We just spent the past two weeks on a sunny island, after all."
"Ugh." Ellie slumped back in her chair and crossed her arms over her chest. She huffed indignantly, causing her bangs to flutter against her forehead. "That's so unfair."
"Ellie Anne Hudson!" Rachel admonished. "Say hello to your sister and brother."
Relaxing and finally smiling, Ellie stood up and hugged both Abby and Mason. "While I'm incredibly jealous, I am glad to see you. How was the honeymoon?"
"Amazing, of course," Abby said.
"We're already planning our second trip," Mason added as he wrapped an arm around her shoulders and kissed his wife's cheek.
Ellie groaned and threw her hands up in the air. "That's so unfair!" she repeated. "Where's my coffee?"
Sophie handed her best friend her coffee and patted her back. "Don't worry, we'll take a trip up to the lake house. It's not exactly an island getaway, but you might get tan."
"Please, she'll burn before she tans," Abby pointed out while Sophie sniggered.
Ellie huffed indignantly. "What is this, make fun of Ellie day?"
Rachel shook her head and laughed as she watched her children. She was filled with a complete, peaceful happiness as she looked upon them. Of course, Evan, Todd, and Derek were sitting at the other end of the waiting room, probably plotting some kind of prank. On the other side of those hospital doors, her first baby was having his own baby. This was a truly amazing day for the Hudson family.
Finn seemed to know exactly what Rachel was thinking about, because he pulled her close and kissed her softly. Rachel beamed at him and pressed her hand to his cheek. She loved him with all her heart, and she knew that would never change.
The doors to the maternity room opened, and Scott appeared. He was dressed in blue scrubs and he had a beaming grin on his face that all of the Hudson children had inherited from their mother. Everyone in the waiting room immediately stopped what they were doing and turned to face Scott.
"It's a boy!" Scott announced. "Liam Finley Hudson!"
Congratulations were exchanged, and Kurt wondered out loud if they could bring bottles of champagne into the hospital. Scott's younger sisters squealed and hugged him at the same time while Evan clapped him on the back. Of course, since Scott and Blaire kept the gender of the baby a secret, Ellie had immediately organized a betting pool. The rest of their family members surrounded her as she settled the bets for gender, weight, and size.
Finn hugged his oldest son tightly as happy tears streamed from Rachel's eyes. She had promised herself that she wasn't going to cry, but she couldn't help it. She was just too happy and there was no way she would be able to stop the tears.
"I don't know how I could have done this without you, Dad," Scott said. His brown eyes were earnest as he looked up at his father. "You taught me what it meant to be an amazing dad."
"Scott." Finn hugged him again. "You would have figured it out on your own, buddy. But I'm glad I could help out."
Scott grinned and hugged Rachel, patting her back comfortingly. "Come on, Mom. Don't cry. You don't want to be crying when you meet your grandson, do you?"
"Right now?" Rachel sniffled and wiped under her eyes with her fingers. "We're meeting him right now?"
"Of course. The first people that get to meet Liam have to be his grandparents, right?" With a half smile that instantly reminded Rachel of Finn, Scott lead Finn and Rachel through the double doors and into the maternity suite. Blaire was situated on the bed, looking tired but happy. Her dark hair was sweaty and piled on top of her head, but she had that new mother's glow that made her look radiant.
Blaire had the newborn baby cuddled against her chest. He was swaddled tightly in a white blanket with a tiny blue hat on top of his little head, and Rachel didn't think she had ever seen anything more precious.
"Hey," Blaire greeted. She had been in labor for over twenty-four hours, but it had all been worth it to hold this little miracle in her arms.
"Oh, Blaire," Rachel breathed. "He's beautiful!"
"He might be better looking than you were, Scott," Finn joked as he ruffled his oldest son's hair.
Scott's beam was a smile that was mirrored on his father's face. "I don't know. I hope he takes after his mom."
Rachel pulled Scott into a hug and kissed his cheek. He might have been over a foot and a half taller than her, but he would always be her little boy and he would never be too tall for his mother to hug him. "Scott Hudson, you took after your father and you turned out just fine."
Blaire grinned. "I hope he's just like his dad," she said. "He had some great role models, after all." She extended the newborn baby towards Finn. "Do you want to hold him?"
Finn looked towards Rachel with questioning eyes. He knew that she had wanted to hold this baby since Blaire had announced that she was pregnant. To his surprise, Rachel nodded her head and gestured for Finn to take their grandchild. This was his moment.
With a well-practiced ease that had come from having four children of his own plus numerous nieces and nephews, Finn took the tiny baby and cradled him carefully. Liam yawned and smacked his lips together, snuggling further into the swaddle of his blanket. Rachel leaned against Finn's arm, and together they gazed down at their first grandchild.
"Welcome to the world, Liam Finley Hudson," Rachel whispered.
The 50th chapter had to be Finn and Rachel welcoming their first grandchild into the world, of course! (And yes, I did borrow that last line from One Tree Hill.)
