Making Moves, Part II

Collapsing back in her chair, Ellie swiped the coffee that Sophie was drinking and took a long sip of it. Her eyebrows shot up as she drank, and she saw Sophie grinning wickedly as she pulled another coffee out of the carrier.
"Did you put Bailey's in this coffee?" Ellie asked.
"Duh," Sophie said. "You're going to need to start drinking early if you're going to be dealing with Uncle Kurt all day."
Ellie snorted indelicately. It was true—Kurt was already driving all of them crazy. They had already capitulated into making this a black tie event. The girls would be wearing ball gowns, and the boys would be in tuxes. Ellie couldn't wait to see the look on her father's face when he saw he had to wear a tux to this vow renewal.
"So, have you figured out a way to get your parents here?" Sophie asked. She popped the top off of her coffee and pulled a flash from some hidden garter on her thigh. She poured more Bailey's into her coffee, and then held the flask out to Ellie. Laughing, Ellie accepted the flask and poured a little bit more into her coffee as well.
"Yeah, I think I've got a pretty good idea," Ellie said. She had spent the better part of the previous night agonizing over how to get her parents to the surprise party. After running the idea by her older brother, they had both agreed that they would be able to get Finn and Rachel there.
Sophie tilted her head back and stared up at the huge chandelier hanging from the ceiling of the ballroom. "You know, you did a pretty kick-ass job planning this whole thing. You should totally plan my wedding."
"Ha!" Ellie rolled her eyes. "The wedding planning business totally isn't for me. That's what we have Uncle Kurt for, remember?"
The uncle in question came bustling by at that moment, yelling into his headset about the flower arrangements. He was waving a clipboard around, and Sophie laughed into her coffee cup.
"Hey Elle, isn't that your clipboard?"
Ellie sighed. "Yup. He hijacked it from me about three hours ago." She waved her hand dismissively. "I just let it go. Uncle Kurt is always in a better mood when he's busy."
As if he knew the girls were talking about him, Kurt whipped around a pointed threateningly at them. "Sophie Puckerman! You need to get dressed. Your hair needs to be done as well, and I don't want to hear a thing about how you don't like how it looks. And you!" He rounded on Ellie. "You need to call your parents within the next five minutes, because I need them here in twenty if I have any hope of getting your father ready."
"Just my dad?" Ellie's eyebrows shot up.
"Don't even get me started on your mother," Kurt added.
Sophie snorted and took another long drink of her coffee. "You're going to have more trouble getting my father into a tux than you are anyone else."
That seemed to push Kurt into action once again. He flipped through the pages on what was once Ellie's clipboard, while he took his phone out and started yelling into the head set at the same time. "Is Noah Puckerman here? He better be here! He was supposed to arrive half an hour ago, and he better be wearing his tuxedo!"
Ellie shot her best friend and amused look. "You're evil."
Sophie gave her the smirk she inherited from her father—it should have looked out of place with her delicate blonde looks, but she made it work. "It was totally worth it."
Ellie paced back and forth as she flipped her iPhone around in her hands. She was nearing the end of the five minute window Kurt had given her, and she had yet to actually make the call to her parents.
She had no idea why she was so worried; these were her parents after all, and Finn and Rachel had always done whatever was in their power when their children asked it of them. This whole surprise party was riding on Ellie's ability to get her parents there, after all.
Taking a deep breath, Ellie smoothed her hands down the front of her ball gown. It was strapless and gold and fell in delicate waves of fabric to the floor, and it was breathtakingly gorgeous. She felt a little bit like a princess in it, and it somehow gave her the confidence to finally place the call to her parents.
Her mother answered within two rings, as she always did. "Hey, Ellie!" Rachel exclaimed. "What's going on?"
Ellie managed another quick, deep breath before she began speaking. Rachel Hudson always did have a scary knack for knowing when her children were even being the smallest bit deceptive. "You know how I have that benefit coming up at work?" she asked.
Having graduated from college two years ago, Ellie had gotten a job at a hospital near her apartment as a music therapist. She adored her job and loved practically everything about it, and of course she felt a connection to her parents having a job with music.
"Yes of course," Rachel said. "You're having a concert for the kids at the hospital, right?"
"Right," Ellie confirmed. "Well, I think I found this perfect venue for it. It's that hotel on 22nd and Kingsley."
On the other end of the line, Rachel let out a low whistle. "That's a pretty fancy hotel. I'm assuming you want to use the ballroom?"
"Of course. And I want to make sure the acoustics are perfect. I'm going to need your professional opinion, Mom."
As Ellie had expected, Rachel was unable to pass up the opportunity. "I'll be there in ten minutes. Is that okay?"
"Of course it is!" Ellie exclaimed. She tried not to sound too enthusiastic, but she was so happy that her plan was actually working. "And hey, are you with Dad?"
Rachel laughed. "Of course I am. I haven't been able to get rid of him all day!" Her voice was playful and teasing, and it made Ellie smile. Her parents were too cute sometimes, but she certainly wasn't about to admit it to them.
"Well don't tell him, but I miss him. Do you think you could convince him to tag along with you?"
"Absolutely. We'll see you in a bit, Ellie."
Grinning, Ellie hung up the phone and went to go tell Kurt that the couple of honor was on their way. Operation Get Finn and Rachel to the Party was in full effect.
Naturally, Rachel and Finn were utterly confused when they got to the hotel and found Kurt and Ellie waiting for them in such formal outfits. They stopped in front of them, with their eyes wide and their mouths hanging open in surprise.
Rachel's eyes narrowed as soon as she got over her shock. "Alright, you two. What's going on?"
Finn took in his brother's tuxedo, and he sighed heavily. "I'm going to end up wearing one of those, aren't I?"
Kurt rolled his eyes and gave a sigh of great suffering. "Yes, Finn. You're going to have to put on a tuxedo, and you're going to enjoy it. Now follow me, please. And Rachel, you follow Ellie. You have to go and get hair and makeup done." His eyes scanned up and down his sister-in-law's outfit. "Have you even showered yet today? What's going on with your hair?"
Rachel gasped and opened her mouth to snap at Kurt, but Finn came to the rescue. "Kurt, what the hell is going on?"
Kurt threw his hands up in the air. "Hey, Ellie is involved in this too! Why aren't you yelling at her?"
"Because I actually like her. She's my daughter, after all."
"I'm your brother!"
"Okay, okay." Ellie stepped between her uncle and her and father and held her hands up. "Uncle Kurt, I'll take Dad to his room so he can go and get change. You take Mom to get ready. And I'll be by in about ten minutes to see how things are going, so be nice. Both of you."
Rachel smiled at her daughter. She was so like Finn sometimes, especially when she took charge of situations like this. "You still haven't told us what's going on yet, sweetie."
"Isn't it obvious?" Ellie beamed at her parents. "We're throwing a party. You're going to be renewing your vows today!"
Rachel wasn't quite sure if it was embarrassing to feel this nervous—she had been married to Finn for over thirty years, after all. Still, it was like she was getting married all over again. She was wearing a white dress, and she holding a small bouquet of her favorite pink carnations.
This time, though, she and Finn had decided to sneak off to meet before their ceremony. They had sent Puck in to distract Kurt, so they were both sure that they would be safe.
"Oh, wow," Finn said as Rachel ducked into the little alcove they found. "Rach, you look amazing."
Rachel beamed at her husband and smoothed her hands over her gown. Of course, it was white, and it was floor-length with little flutter sleeves and beautiful silver beading all over it. She wished she could be surprised that Kurt had insisted on putting her in a pure white gown, but she really wasn't.
"You're not looking too bad yourself, handsome," Rachel said. She pressed her hands to Finn's chest and stroked them over the front of the tuxedo. "You know, if the kids hadn't put this whole thing together, I would say that we should just skip out and go have another honeymoon."
Finn chuckled and wrapped his arms around Rachel, pulling her closer to him. "You've certainly become a bad influence over the years, Mrs. Hudson." He brushed his lips against hers, and Rachel curled her fingers into the front of his jacket and deepened the kiss.
When they finally came up for air, Rachel beamed at him. "I can't believe our kids put this all together. It really is amazing, you know."
"When they use their powers for good, the four of them can do some pretty amazing things," Finn agreed. Rachel laughed and pushed on his chest, and he grinned. "You're right, though. If anyone deserves this, it's you, Rachel Hudson. It's been amazing being married to you for the past thirty-four years."
Beaming, Rachel stretched up onto her tiptoes and pressed her lips to Finn's once again. "I love you, Finn Hudson."
"And I love you, Rachel Hudson."
So clearly, there's going to be a third part to this whole vow renewal surprise. Thanks for reading!
