Building A Family

"You know, despite me always saying it, Wally is not an actual idiot."

Dick smiled, "Not even a little?"

Not looking away from their targets, Artemis smacked her friend on the arm. "He knows we're watching," she then said, glancing at him.

"Yep, and he's mostly likely pissed about it too."

"Who do you think he's more pissed off at though? Us, or the League?"

"Mostly likely the League, which is going to be hilarious to watch later."

Listening to the conversation over the coms, Roy rolled his eyes before taking a sip of his coffee, across from him, Conner snorted.

They were in Central City Park, picked by Rudolph—And no one had been happy about that when they learned the location.—, the four former Young Justice members were spread out, far enough from their target that they wouldn't be considered suspicious, but close enough to see.

Not that it matter.

As stated before, Wally knew they were watching, but was more focused on his father, mostly listening, and answering questions with an ease that bothered their chaperones Kaldur, and Ma'gann. And so far, that was how it went. Until an about an hour in, and Rudolph reached across the picnic table, and grabbed Wally's hand.

Wally went stiff, Kaldur started to reach over, eye hard, and slightly murderous, intent on removing Rudolph's hand. Whether from Wally, or the man's whole body, was debatable, when suddenly Wally stopped him.

"It's okay Kaldur." Wally's voice is steady.

Kaldur obviously had words about that, but Ma'gann gently taking his reaching hand into her own, and mentally calming the others, had him settling back down. And it's then, does Wally speak to his father.

"What is it?"

Rudolph doesn't say anything, Kaldur's eye narrowing when the man's thumb caressed skin, Ma'gann raising a brow at him when a very detail imagine popped up in her head.

"You've been spending a lot of time with Jason recently, haven't you?" Was her only response.

Kaldur's lips tilted up.

Meanwhile, Wally just waited. Finally Rudolph spoke, "Do you know why, I left you in this park that night?"

That wasn't what Wally was expecting to hear, and honestly, he didn't have an answer for it. Uncle Barry, and Auntie Iris thought that his father had a moment of clarity, albeit not much, and upon realizing what he was doing had did the best thing he could think of at the time to ensure that Wally was safe.

Wally never really believed that.

"No."

Rudolph smiled, "Neither do I."

With the Man-Hunters dealt with, and the world safe once more, the Founding members all headed to one place.

Wayne Manor.

Alfred took one look at them, dressed as they were—covered in blood, dirty, and everything else, exhausted, but determined—and told every last one of them that they were to be patched up, take a bath, and eat before doing the one thing they wanted to do. Leaving no room for arguments.

None of them argued, everyone, Bruce especially, knew better than that.

Finally, finally, they made it to where they wanted to be. And there was Wally, wearing the most comfortable pajamas ever, looking as exhausted as them, green eyes filled with a scary vulnerability that had them remembering speed, a bright light, and a voice filled with awe but also a deep wariness and so ready to let go, to be gone. Gone from them.

They are crowding him in seconds.

Shayera is behind him, warm, strong, and wings a barrier. Hands, big, small, black, white, green, rough from fighting, are gentle as they hold, and touch him. Voices soft, and comforting, coming easily for him, he doesn't say anything, just let them be there. Touching, but not clinging, and they don't push it.

And when exhaustion finally won, and Wally is curled up against Shayera, practically hidden away by feathers, asleep. Everyone else wondered what will come out of this day. Will Wally remain as he is, strong, brave, cheerful, kind, and everything other way they see him? Or will Rudolph have won, and they'll have to watch that happy smile break into pieces that can't put back together?

Will they break if Wally does?

"It's going to be okay."

Hearing his voice is surprising, seeing green eyes look at them with tired warmth is calming, seeing that smile, bright, content, theirs. Has them smiling back, bodies going loose and pressing close to each other, they talk, low murmurs of nonsense that lure Wally back to sleep.

Bruce is the last to close his eyes to rest, and as he does, in mind circled back to one thing.

Maybe, just maybe, everything will end in disaster, maybe it won't, either way, it'll be okay. Because they'll be together.

United like the family Wally had help make them to be.
