First Birthday

"Okay. He needs to look perfect for the picture. Everyone will be seeing it." I tell Finnick.

"Annie-"

"Everyone wants to see him. They couldn't make it to his birthday. They should at least see the picture." I say. It is our sons first birthday. We asked lots of people to come. Johanna, Katniss, Peeta, even Haymitch but none of them could make it. Finnick told me not to get my hopes up. He probably knew they wouldn't come. District 7 is still in pretty bad shape and so is 12. I just hopped this would make everyone a little happy.

"Annie he looks fine no matter what."

He says.

I look over to our one year old son sitting on his baby blanket. He is sucking his teething ring and staring off at something that catches his interest.

"Annie." Finnick says gently.

"Yes?" I ask.

"Like I said they probably wouldn't come-"

"Finnick now is not the time to rub it in." I mutter.

"That's not what I was doing." He smiles.

"Then what were you doing?"

"Even though they couldn't come Peeta and Katniss still sent something." He says and kisses my forehead and goes to the fridge.

I wonder what they gave us.

Finnick takes out a box. It's a bakery box. Finnick sets in down in front of me.

Happy Birthday Nick! it says and it is decorated with multiple swirls in deep greens and blues. It has a few sea animals crabs, dolphins, sea turtles. It reminds me of our wedding cake.

"Peeta outdid himself." I say.

"He really did. You know when I first saw it I thought of-"

"The wedding cake." I smile.

"He must be okay."

"He seems to be from what they say in the letters and when we talk on the phone." I say. Phone calls are rare but letters are regular.

I nod.

"You've gotten better too." He whispers and kisses my forehead.

"I think becoming a mom helped." I say and look at Nick who is now crawling around almost in a circle. I'm afraid he is going to get dizzy.

Becoming a Mom did help. It wasn't until I was eight months pregnant when I realized this. How I hadn't had as many episode or I could keep my focus longer. It was because of him. I'm not going to lie. There are still moments when things become blurred and I just want to scream but that rarely happens.

"I think it was just you Annie." He says and kisses me.

Finnick walks over to the living room and picks Nick up.

He gets that scrunched face he does when he is about to cry.

"Finnick put him back down." I say.

He does and Nick crawls back to his blanket and sucks on his teething ring.

"Gah!" He laughs.

"That was a close call." I say.

"He can be like a land mine." He teases.

"Not if you do it the right way." I smile and walk over towards him and sit next to him. He starts to crawl away.

"Says the master." Finnick says and I roll my eyes.

Nick blows a raspberry causing spit to fly everywhere.

I sigh.

Finnick goes over to pick him up. He places Nick in my arms who looks up at me with doe eyes. He smiles. I kiss the top of his head which is just covered with baby fluff.

Finnick comes back with a spit up rag and cleans his face.

"I think he is gonna be excited for the cake." He smiles.

"Mama." He says and pulls my hair.

"Yes that's me sweetie." I say and kiss the top of his head. He pulls my hair again and starts laughing. Finnick takes him so I can put up my hair.

"You can't pull Mommy's hair Nick. That's not nice." He says and kisses his cheek.

Nick laughs and claps both of his hand together.

We wait until my parents come over to serve the cake.

It's a nice chocolate cake. I give a little to Nick but he gets almost all of it on his face. I even see some on top of his head.

My parents leave shortly after.

"We should clean you up buddy." Finnick smiles and takes Nick from his booster seat.

I smile and hear Nick giggling as Finnick carries him upstairs. I know those giggles will soon fade because he loathes getting wet just like his Mommy.

I move my hand to my lower stomach. I still haven't told Finnick.

I hear a light scream and want to race upstairs but I know Nick is in capable hands.

A few minutes later Finnick comes down stairs holding a slightly damp Nick.

"Come see Mama." I say and reach out for him. Finnick gives him to me and we walk towards the couch. I sit down and Nick nestles into me like a pillow. He will probably fall asleep soon.

"Mama." He says softly.

I kiss the top of his head.

"This was nice." Finnick says and rubs Nick's back. "Maybe next year we will have more guests." He says.

"Maybe but... I think I can guarantee there will be one more guest."

"Really? How can you guarantee this miss?" Finnick smiles.

"Because." I say and look up at Finnick who smiles.

"Because you can suddenly see the future." He teases.

"No because I'm pregnant." I say and Finnick double backs.

"Really?" He asks eager.

I nod.

"I found out last week-"

"Last week!" He shouts.

"Shh you'll wake him." I say and kiss the top of Nick's head.

"Okay fine, but how could you have waited a whole seven days to tell me this."

"I was scared." I whisper.

"Of what?"

I shrug.

"I don't know… I didn't know how you would react."

"You said this the first time." He smiles. "It hasn't changed." He says and kisses me. "Do you hear that Nick you're going to have a brother or sister." Finnick says although it is pretty clear Nick is sleeping. "You'll get to meet them next year." Finnick says and looks at me happily.

I smile too.

"I love you." I say.

"I love you too." He says. "Maybe if everything works out everyone can meet the new Odair." Finnick smiles and kisses me.

"Maybe." I smile and so does he.
