A/N: Request: Can you do a modern day when Finnick and Annie are in high school.

Okay ladies and gents I'll give it a whirl but I always feel I don't do modern day well but here we go.

New Girl

It was was a new day. A new town. A new school.

Annie and her family just moved into the small town. A town that has less than three thousand people. Her Mother finally got her dream job, but not in one of the big cities like she always wanted. It's just Annie and her Mom, her Dad left when she was three. Her Mom doesn't talk about him or why he left, all she knows is he's gone. Annie has a sneaking suspicion it is because Annie was born only when her parents were eighteen. Realtionships like that don't seem to last.

"Annie sweetie do you have everything for the first day?" Her Mother asks coming into her bedroom.

"Yeah, I've got a backpack and empty notebooks.' She says unenthused.

She wouldn't mind being the new girl as much if it wasn't the middle of the semester. Since the town is small she knows most of the students probably know each other, she just doesn't want to play catch up on her school work.

"Don't worry sweetie I think we are going to like it here."

"Yeah." Annie says more for her Mother than her.

She smiles.

Annie finishes her toast and heads for her car. It's a grey four door sedan, nothing special and it is pushing ten years. She's honestly surprised it lasted three states over. It has over a hundred thousand miles and shouldn't be driven long distances but she needed it here.

Annie backs out of her driveway carefully. She scoured the town a few days ago, the school is a ten minute drive from her house. There are also no major stores in the town. She probably has to drive thirty minutes to get to a Walmart.

Annie pulls into the first open spot she sees. She decided to get there a little early so she could buy her parking pass, get her schedule, find her locker, and find her classes.

The school isn't very big it's a two story building and only holds approximately four hundred students, at her old school she had four hundred kids in her class alone.

Annie takes a deep breath and opens the car door.

When she opens the school door she sees it decorated with blue and white posters. It is advertising a basketball game. There are streamers all over the stair rails and some tables.

Annie sees the front office sign and heads in that direction.

"Hello." An older woman says to Annie when she opens the door.

The woman has red hair that needs to be dyed again because she can see grey at the roots.

"Hi. I'm Annie Cresta I'm a new student here." Annie says.

"Oh yes we've been expecting you. I'll get your class schedule." She says and hurries to the computer. "Here you are Miss. Cresta." She says and hands her the piece of paper.

English, Art History, History, Biology, Gym, and Spanish I. It reads.

"I took French at my last school." Annie says confused. She only knows the basic words in Spanish like hello, goodbye, and how are you. She wouldn't be able to pass a basic test right now and it is the middle of the school year.

"We don't teach French here and since you need a language credit we thought Spanish would be a nice fit." She says with a smile.

"Okay." Annie says. She can't really do anything about it, she didn't ask if they had any other languages, but doesn't want to make a scene. She hopes French and Spanish have some overlap.

"Here's a map if you get lost. Your locker will be on the second floor in hall D. Now do you need a parking pass?" The woman says nicely.

"Yes please." Annie says and fills out the form. She can hear the halls becoming full with people.

"Here you go, hang this so it can be seen. You'll be fine for today though." She says with a smile.

"Okay." Annie says meekly.

"Have a good first day Annie."

"Okay." Annie says and nods.

She leaves the room and heads to the closest stairwell because her locker is on the second floor. She wants to put her backpack away and know where she can drop things off between classes.

Her locker is in a far corner away near a stairwell. She figures this is all they had to offer, it is the middle of the school year.

She looks at the paper for the combination.

4-30-14

Annie has to try twice before it opens, she's never been good at unlocking things. She looks at the clock on the wall and see she still has twenty minutes before first period starts.

Her first class is on the first floor so she decides to try and find her first class, which is English taught by someone with the last name Abernathy.

The stairwell she took leads to a small hallway that is clearly a back entrance.

Annie turns the corner and runs into someone spilling her pencils and school supplies. She notices papers are flying everywhere.

"Sorry." They say at the same time.

"You're the new girl." He says picking up his papers. She notices they are flyers advertising something for the swim team.

"You've heard of me then." Annie says annoyed. She gets the feeling people are going to be saying this to her all day.

He smirks.

"You're the biggest news here since an ice cream store started to serve banana flavored ice cream. You should feel proud.".

Annie rolls her eyes.

She gets a good look at him this time. A nice muscular build, golden tan skin, bronze hair, and sea green eyes.

He's handsome. Annie thinks to herself. She shakes her head. There's always one pretty boy.

"Good to know I'm as exciting as a frozen dessert." Annie says.

"Nothing happens here is my point." He says. He puts the dropped flyers in a neat stack.

"This school has a swim team." Annie says surprised looking at the flyers.

He smirks.

"It's nothing fancy, but yes there's a swim team. You can't join though because it's the middle of the year but you can always come to a meet." He says nicely.

"I take it you're on the swim team." Annie says grabbing the last of her pencils.

He nods.

"I got drafted to put up the flyers. Not my favorite job if you get what I'm saying." He says and hands her, her schedule back. "Oh." Finnick says like he's in pain.

"What?" She asks.

"Mr. Latier is a hard ass getting an A on his tests is almost impossible."

"Great." Annie says. She isn't very good at science.

"Where's your next class?" He asks.

"Somewhere in this hall." Annie says.

"English would be best bet then, if you have Abernathy than we share a class." He says and stands up. "My name's Finnick."

"Annie." She says with a smile as he helps her up.

"Well Annie." He says with a flirtatious smile. "I'll see you around." He says and walks away

Annie can feel herself blushing for some reason.

Stop it Annie. She thinks to herself. She doesn't want to get in a relationship because she will be leaving for college next year. Even though she just met this guy it applies to all of them.

She came to this conclusion after her boyfriend of two years broke up with her when he went to college last year. He didn't want to try long distance even though the school he chose was only an hour away. He wanted to close the high school chapter of his life and move on. Even though it broke Annie's heart she understands why he did it and plans to do the same so, she will avoid getting into any type of romance while she attends school here.

However, sometimes love just creeps up on you.

A/N: Okay, okay this one shot got to me and got me thinking to continue this story, but I feel like I do poorly at modern day do opinions of any kind are welcome.
