Chapter 5: Cabin Fever and Complications
Reyna
"Rain?" I heard as the door to my apartment opened. I hated the nickname and he knew it and he called it anyway.
"In here." I called from my room.
It only took a couple of seconds for my door to bust open.
"You shouldn't burst into rooms like that." I said. "I could've been naked, for all you know."
"But you're not." He shrugged. "Besides, nothing I haven't seen before. besides I'm not even into to that."
"Are you saying your not attracted to me anymore? Because that's a dick thing to say."
"What?! No, no that's not what I meant."
"Then what did you mean?"
"I'm saying that I'm not attracted to girls… in particular."
Silence…
"So your…"
"Yup."
"Then how did we…"
"Well, I just wanted to see if I still could… and we were drunk and well…"
"Now we're having a child." I sighed. "Because of one huge fuck up, followed by a variety of fuck ups. Oh my god, our kid's going to be a fuck up."
"Rain, I think you are over exaggerating."
"Nico, What made us think that we could raise a kid?" I snapped. "This kid is going to have no stability. How are we going to explain this to her? You know, she's going to ask one day."
"And when she does, we'll explain it to her but what you need to do right now is calm down." Nico said, sitting down next to me. "You getting all worked up is not helping anyone right now."
"You're right, sorry."
"It's ok."
"And for the record, I don't have a problem with you being…"
"Gay?"
"Yup, It just frustrates me that you didn't tell me earlier."
"I'm sorry, its just not many people know."
"Who does know?"
"Jason, Percy and Annabeth."
"Great, Jason knew and not me?" I exclaimed. "Me?! The person who's been carrying your child for 4 months."
"I was going to work around to it, Geez."
"Ugh, I can't believe you Nico, I really hope this child gets brains from me."
"Yea, I hope so too." Nico laughed, it sounded a lot lighter, like a weight was off his shoulders. "Hungry?"
"Always." I smiled.
Annabeth
"Annie, your pregnant. Don't you think you should take a break from working?" Percy asked
"I told you about calling me Annie and I did take a break from work." I said confused. I turned to the 2 Hermes kids carrying a stack of wood. "Thanks guys, just set that near the stone pile." I turned to walk around the half finished cabin.
"I mean taking a break from all work, Annabeth." Percy said, Defiantly. "The doctor said not to do any heavy stuff—"
"And I'm not."
"And to rest. You should be resting." He repeated.
"I'm just helping out with a couple of rebuilds, Percy. I'm barely doing anything."
"Yea but—"
"Perce, I'm starting to get cabin fever sitting in the house all day. I've gotta do something." I sighed. "Since when in our relationship, do you worry about me?"
"Since there was more than you in there." Percy said looking down.
"Cute." I patted his cheek. "But I'm fine, and she's fine. Stop worrying."
"Alright, alright. But no heavy lifting."
"Okay."
"I'm serious, Annie."
"I know, Percy, Now go bother your sister." I smirked. "And stop calling me Annie." I said, as I watched him jog away from me up half-blood hill.
Lyric
"Hey nerd, what's up with you?" Percy said, jogging up to me in the strawberry fields.
"Feet, legs and back. All sore." I said, sighing. "Plus, right now I'm currently hiding from Valdez."
"Why?" Percy asked.
"I guess, we're arguing?" I shrugged. "Or rather he has some strong opinions that I'm going to ignore."
"Lyric!" We both turn to the voice, and saw Valdez marching toward me.
"Oops, guess he found me."
"I'll catch up with you later." Percy said, clapping me on the back.
"No! If you're here he can't yell at me." I said, grabbing his arm.
"Sorry, you gotta deal with your own relationship problems." He waved at me before jogging away.
"So much for Brotherhood!" I shouted after him, before turning to face my fate.
Leo stood in front of me and just stared at me with his arms crossed.
I sighed. "I don't want to talk about this, Leo."
"Well, we have to talk about it, Lyric." Leo exclaimed. "Tour, are you serious?"
"I haven't even given them a decision yet—"
"But you want to go, I know you do!"
"Of course I do, Valdez. Dancing is what I do!" I yelled. "And I got asked to tour with the Rockettes! That's my dream! And it's not until next year so why are we fighting now?"
"Because you're supposed to be here to raise the kid!"
"Oh, so you're the only one who can go work? Because I'm the woman, I'm meant to stay home?"
"That's not what I meant and you know it."
"It's just a 3 month tour, why is this a big deal?"
"Because it'll be 3 months away from your child!"
"Well, 3 months didn't seem as much when you were graduating? And she was just as real then as she'll be outside of me. Why does this matter?"
"Because this kid is our lives now we can't be selfish anymore."
My head started to spin. "Shut up, Valdez."
"Lyric, you can't just tell me to shut up—"
"Seriously shut up, I don't feel—"
The scent of warm strawberries was the last thing I smelt before I blacked out.
Leo
I sat in the infirmary, silent, holding my wife's hand while her eyes flickered open.
"What happened? Where am I?" She said, trying to sit up immediately.
"Hey, Hey calm down." I said, all but pushing her back down. "You're in the infirmary, you blacked out."
"Blacked out?" Lyric groaned. "Why?"
"Hey, there she is!" Kayla said, walking toward us, clipboard in hand. "It's because you're blood sugar was extremely low, we had to give you a glucose drip. When was the last time you've eaten?"
Lyric looked up. "Uhhhhh…"
Kayla tsked. "See you can't do that anymore, Lyric. You're pregnant. And you, Mister," She said, pointing at me. "You've got to hold her accountable! She's eating for three now."
"Three?" "Come again?" Lyric and I said at the same time.
"Yea, well, you know." Kayla smiled. "Her and the twins."
"Twins?!" Lyric and I said, yet again at the same time.
Kayla's demeanor changed. "I'm sorry, I thought you knew." She pulled up an image of a sonogram on the computer screen. "See, twins." She said, pointing to the apparently 2 blobs on the screen.
"But, the doctor at the clinic didn't say—" Lyric cut off immediately just staring at the screen.
"Yea, sometimes mortal doctors don't get it right for Demigods, you really should've come here or New Rome instead." Kayla pointed out.
"But, my dreams, I've only had dreams about the one girl?"
Kayla scrunched her nose, thinking "Are you sure? There wasn't anyone else? Maybe constantly with her?"
Lyric made a sudden face of realization. "There was a guy! I thought it was just maybe a best friend but she was always talking to a guy!"
"Yea, you wouldn't get any friends in the visions. You'd only see the child and maybe the father."
Lyric sighed and put the crook of her arms over her eyes. "Twins… shit."
Kayla tried to smile encouragingly. "Well, I feel I just dropped a bomb in here, so I'll let you guys talk. Just—ah, page me if you need me." She said, walking out.
Lyric and I just looked at each other for a long time.
"Twins…" She said after a long while.
"Twins…" I repeated.
"Shit!" she hissed, mostly to herself, putting her arm back over her eyes. "What are we going to do?"
I leaned forward and moved the arm from in front of her eyes. I reached and intertwined her hand with mine. "Whatever we have to, ok?" I whispered. "We're a team. We got this."
Lyric squeezed my hand tighter and nodded but I could tell she was still unsure.
