Chapter 6: Doctor's visits and seeing double
Reyna
I sat reading a magazine while the nurse checked my vitals
Nico restlessly tapped his fingers on his knee
I smiled as she cooed and asked have we thought of baby names, when the baby was due, etc.
Nico kept tapping his knees.
I continued to read as she told us the doctor would be in shortly.
Nico continued to tap his knee.
I'm going to lose my mind I thought.
As if my body had a mind of its own, I threw the magazine at Nico. He sputtered and flailed trying to block his face.
"Hey!" he yelped.
"Quit it." I said, in a rushed whisper.
"I'm sorry, hospitals make me nervous." He shrugged and started scratching his knee instead. "And itchy…"
I reached over to hit his hands. He started flailing, which resulted in a less than mature slap fight.
"Stop it!" I exclaimed.
"I'm sorry." Nico exasperated. "But you know hospitals give me the creeps."
"Then stop complaining about me never bringing you to doctor's appointments." I sighed, flipping a page in my magazine. "Besides this is technically an infirmary in New Rome, hardly a real hospital."
"Certainly feels and looks like one." Nico grumbled.
"Well, you can always leave." I gently remind him
"Just as much my child as yours." He gently reminds me back.
I sigh and return to my magazine. Not soon after I hear the doctor's voice.
"Hey, how are you doing today? I'm Dr. Solace. I'll be taking care of you."
Nico and I looked up in shock.
"Where's Dr. Chiri?" I asked.
"Dr. Chiri's mom has fallen ill. She's moved to Texas full time to take care of her. I'll be taking care of you from now on, unless you are uncomfortable. We can always find you another doctor."
"I suppose it's fine." I sighed. I had liked Dr. Chiri. Will turned from me to wash his hand and put on gloves. I heard Nico gulped.
"Will?" He asked.
Dr. Solace immediately turned, and I could see the color drain from his face before he shook his head to compose himself.
"Hey Nico." Will smiled. "How have you been?
"I-I'm fine." He sputtered.
"I haven't seen you since—"
"Since I left Camp Half-Blood."
"Yea." Will said, smiling sadly. "Since you left."
I cleared my throat. They broke the glances they spared each other. "Hey, pregnant lady over here. Kinda wanna get this over with."
"Of course, sorry." Will apologized and immediately started checking on her. "So, how long have you guys been married?"
Nico and I shared a look before bursting out laughing.
"We're not—" I said.
"Yea, not my wife, just my baby." Nico added.
"Oh, just dating?"
"No, we're…" Nico trailed off.
"Parents?" I provided.
"Co-Parents." Nico said, both of us nodding having found the right word.
"That's very forward of you guys." Will said.
"Well, not really by choice but wouldn't have it any other way." Nico said.
Will hummed.
There was a bout of silence before Nico cleared his throat. "So, uh… when did you start working in New Rome? Last I heard you had a residency in Texas?"
"Keeping tabs on me, Nico?"
Nico turned bright red. "More like force-fed information."
"Yea, I was working in Texas for a while, was engaged too, but my Fiancé cheated on me. So I thought I'd come back here, needed a fresh start, you know?"
"Yea, I get that." Nico says. "Sorry about your Fiancé."
"It's fine, things happen for a reason."
I clear my throat again. "So that means you are…? Single?"
"Reyna!" Nico flushes.
"What? You weren't going to ask." I shrug.
Will chuckles. "I am."
"Cool." I smile. "So is Nico."
"Reyna!" Nico exclaims again, slapping my arm.
"Ow!" I said, pointedly.
Will chuckled. "Well, she seems to be doing fine in there. Vitals are normal, she's perfectly healthy. Try not to exert yourself too much, I know you have Praetor responsibilities, but make sure you are resting enough." He got up and threw his gloves in the trash. "I'm going to call Cindy in for a blood test and after that you're good to go. It was nice to see you again, Nico."
Nico and I watched him exit the room. Once the door was closed, Nico slapped my arms again, starting a less than mature slap fight.
"STOP!" I said, slapping him two more times for good measure. "Geez, I shouldn't have to say don't hit the mother of your future child."
"Maybe, if the mother of my future child wasn't a meddler, she wouldn't get hit."
"Please, are you going to sit here and tell me you aren't still into him?"
"Well, I don't-I didn't" Nico sighed, frustratedly. "Look, maybe when things ended I was always curious 'what if', but not enough to do anything about it now!"
"Well, now you can, thanks to me by the way. Now come on, I'll let you order me pizza as repayment."
Annabeth
"I feel like I'm becoming a broken record now." Dr. Samson said, checking his clipboard again. "But, you have to stop working and rest."
"I've been trying to tell her doc." Percy crosses his arms, looking smug.
"I've stopped working." I sighed.
"Not at the camp."
"I was only helping with some minor repairs!" I exclaimed. "No heavy-lifting I swear."
"That's well and good, but you're still putting a tremendous amount of stress on the baby." Doctor says, sighing. "I'm sorry but you have to go on bed rest."
"I'm sorry what?" I sprung up, or well as fast a 7 month pregnant woman can spring. "I think that's completely unnecessary, I'm fine."
"I'm serious, Annabeth you are putting you and the baby in danger. So when you get home. Straight to bed." The doctor turned out the door. Percy and I sat in silence for a beat.
Percy stretches. "I hate to say I told you so but-"
"Don't start."
Leo
"Have you eaten this morning?" I asked, finishing a bolt on a device I was tinkering with.
"Yea." Lyric said, looking up from her laptop.
"What did you eat?"
"I had a banana."
"Babe, Go eat an actual meal." I sighed.
"I'm not hungry. I've got to finish this before work monday."
"I'm going to go make you something. And then you're going to eat it. All of it." I said, rubbing her shoulder before passing through to the Kitchen.
I was flipping a pancake when I noticed Lyric leaning against the doorframe.
"I'm pregnant." she started.
"I know..?" I said, in confusion.
"Then, can we stop fighting? I'm literally carrying your child."
"Children." I corrected.
"Oh yea, I keep forgetting."
"And we're not fighting."
"I've been in a relationship with you since I was 16. I think I'd know if something was upsetting you."
I sighed. "I just don't want you to go."
"I haven't given them a decision yet."
"Yea, but you want to." I said. "I know you too, remember."
"Of course, I want to. It's my dream to dance. But, I love you and I don't want to sacrifice my relationship for it."
"And I don't want you to resent me down the line for keeping you from your dream." I push the pancakes towards her.
Lyric hops up on the counter and starts eating. "So we're at an impasse"
"Seems that way." I leaned against counter she was on. "Tell me what you want. Please."
"I want us to be good." Lyric Sighed.
"We'll be good no matter what." I grabbed her hand. "Nothing's going to mess us up ok. Nothing you choose is going to change my opinion on you. I know who I married."
She began to tear up. "You were right."
"I'm sorry what?" I said. "Can you repeat that? It's just so rare, I want to take a mental picture."
"You're also an idiot." She laughed. "But you were right. I don't know what I was thinking. Thinking I'd be able to go on tour and leave you and our children behind." She grabs my hand. "This is what I signed up for, you are the person I decided to start a family with why would I leave as soon I get that chance."
"I love you."
"I love you too. Plus the Rockettes dance at the white house and I don't dance for the man.
I laughed and helped her off the counter. "Movie night tonight?"
"Can we not watch the notebook again?"
"Why you have something against the greatest love story ever? I'll never know." I smiled before following her into the living room
