Snape decided that it would be wise to change location now, just in case, as Harry had been missing from the Dursley's for a full day and night now. He packed up what little he kept at Spinner's end while Remus played with Harry. Severus sent Petal on ahead of them with the trunk of his possessions, and then went to where Harry was playing with his new dinosaurs, the little boy trying to teach Lupin the complicated names of each one.
"I think that we should move to my real house, don't you?"
Lupin looked up sharply in surprise, but Harry just nodded. Snape tried to phrase his next statement carefully, so as not to alarm Harry.
"My real house is a secret hideout, and I don't want anyone to know about but us. Can both of you keep it a secret?"
Lupin nodded, and Harry looked excited.
"I'm good at secrets, and I like to hide. I won't tell anyone."
Snape smiled at the enthusiastic child.
"Perfect! All we have to do to get there is think real hard about Petal, and then think the word Home. Can you do that, Harry?"
"Yes, that's easy!"
"Ok, hold my hand, and Remus', and we'll do it now, ok?"
Remus stared at the huge manor in awe. Snape chuckled at his expression.
"Welcome to Prince Manor, my ancestral home. Petal should have your new room ready now, Harry. Do you want to go see it?"
After showing him his new room, and pointing out the bathroom across the hall, Sev and Remus left Harry alone to put his new things away. He spent the next hour carefully folding and putting each item of clothing neatly in his dresser. He also lined up his shoes under the bed, stopping to admire the new bedspread, which was striped red and blue with a purple border. Done putting away his clothes, Harry carefully set his dinosaur toys on top of the dresser, and put his new puzzle on the little table in the corner to do later. Done with that, he laid down on the soft rug and carefully colored in a picture, keeping his colored pencils arranged in order in front of him.
Once he was finished coloring, he shyly showed it, a beautifully colored cartoon fox in a top hat and tails, to Snape and Lupin. He looked so uncertain at their praise that it made Lupin very upset for a few minutes, and he had to excuse himself to go "help" Petal with dinner.
Remus had quickly discovered that Petal was an extremely good listener, and unlike most house elves, she would give her honest opinions without worrying she might insult someone. In fact, it had taken the combined efforts of Remus and Severus to convince Petal not to perform some rather nasty elf magic on the Dursley's or their home. The tiny elf had been furious when she had found out how Harry had been living and wanted to punish his abusers. But with the lack of elf rights, she would've gotten in huge trouble with the Ministry, and brought attention to Harry's sudden disappearance.
After dinner, Harry gently placed his new book of fairy tale on Remus' lap. Lupin pulled Harry up, and they read "Snow White", and "Little Red Riding Hood". Once he finished reading, Sev spoke up and told "The Wizard and the Hopping Pot", lulling Harry to sleep with his rich baritone.
Remus carried Harry to his room and helped him into pajamas before tucking him into bed with Pretty Girl. They left the little boy hugging his owl, smiling.
And that was why, two hours later, Harry's scream startled both men so much.
Petal was already trying to comfort a hysterical Harry, who was under his bed, pressed against the wall. His eyes were wild, and he was shaking violently. Lying on their stomachs, Remus and Sev slowly pieced together what had made Harry so upset and afraid.
He had had a nightmare about his uncle. Apparently, Snape and Lupin had taken the little boy to a playground, and Vernon had found them there. The large man had hurt both of Harry's guardians quite badly, before grabbing Harry and dragging him away.
For a long time, the two men lay on the floor, peering under the bed, trying to coax Harry to come out. They both knew that forcing him would only scare him more.
At last, Harry reached out, and together, they gently pulled him out from under the bed. Harry immediately burst into tears when they hugged him, and it took quite a while for him to calm down.
He finally fell asleep, cuddled up against Lupin. As a last resort, Lupin had transformed, and Harry was so entranced that he forgot to be upset. Carefully, he placed his little hands on either side of Lupin's wolf face, and rested his forehead on Lupin's. Remus licked away his tears, making Harry giggle, and curled up around the little boy, who fell asleep petting Remus' soft fur.
