"Am I late?" Said Kakashi, bursting into the Tonk's home with a sense of emergency he usually only saved battle.
Andromeda Tonks stood in the sitting room with her back to him, shoulders shaking slightly. Upon hearing his loud approach, she turned and for the first time, Kakashi noticed the bundle in her arms. "No," Andromeda replied with a chuckle, "You are just in time actually."
Kakashi felt his breath catch in his throat. Kurenai was still a couple months shy of her birthing date and he hadn't been present when Naruto had been born, but he wondered if this was what it would have felt like. He stood there, rooted to the spot until Andromeda smiled at him and gestured for him to come closer. He approached Andromeda and the baby in her arms slowly, as if he were afraid moving any quicker would scare the baby.
"His name is Theodore," Said Andromeda, shifting the bundle in her arms so Kakashi could see better, "Like his grandfather. But he seems to like it when I call him Teddy."
Kakashi stood close to Andromeda and looked down at the newest addition to the Lupin family. Two large and alert eyes stared back at Kakashi and when Kakashi's lone eye widened at the sight, a giggle burst from the baby's mouth and a small hand reached toward him.
Kakashi reeled back, caught off guard by the baby's movement. "He likes you!" Said Andromeda eagerly as she jiggled the baby in her arms. "Would you like to hold him?"
"O-Oh…" Sputtered Kakashi, stepping backward, "I couldn't…" Andromeda paid little attention to Kakashi's stuttering and before he knew it, she was thrusting baby Teddy into his arms.
Teddy felt so light and fragile in his arms, Kakashi was afraid he would hurt the baby if he held him too tightly. Ever since childhood, all Kakashi had known was death. The death of his mother, the death of his father, Obito's death, Rin's death, Minato-sensei's death, even the deaths of all those that he caused…but this was different; this was life and it felt so precious.
Hesitantly, Kakashi put his finger to the baby's face, tickling his cheek and feeling the downy curls on his head. He was surprised when Teddy grasped his finger and held on tightly and even more surprised when Teddy's ginger hair turned grey like his own.
"He takes after his mother." Said Andromeda with a chuckle. "You should have seen how surprised I was when Dora sprouted a pig nose after we made her laugh. Ted almost had a heart attack."
Kakashi smiled, but his eyes remained on Teddy. He liked the way the baby's eyes lit up every time he moved his finger, enjoyed how warm and soft his skin was and how easily he fit in his arms.
"Kakashi?"
Kakashi looked up, startled to hear Tonks voice coming from down the hall. Andromeda held her arms out and it was with great reluctance that Kakashi placed Teddy back in her arms. Andromeda gestured for Kakashi to continue down the hall before she began bouncing Teddy in her arms again, a smile on her face.
Kakashi paused for a minute before entering the bedroom. When he finally did, he found Tonks sitting up in bed, her hair and clothes in disarray but her face shining with a post-pregnancy glow that made her look more beautiful than Kakashi could ever remember seeing her. It made her hard to look at.
Lupin was sitting on the bed beside her, his face lined with worry but content smile on his face. Over the bedspread, his hand held onto Tonks' tightly. Kakashi stared at their entwined hands longer than he should have, but he was surprised to find that he felt content seeing their hands like that. As if everything was as it should be.
"Have you seen Teddy?" Tonks asked, breaking through Kakashi's reverie. Kakashi could see how just saying her newborn son's name made her face light up and his pulse quickened in his chest. If it hadn't been for the mask, Tonks would have seen him smile.
"He's beautiful." Said Kakashi quietly.
Tonks beamed at him and she looked toward her husband, both of them sharing a conspiratorial glance.
"Tonks and I have been talking," Said Lupin, looking up at Kakashi, "And we've been thinking about making Harry Teddy's godfather."
Kakashi nodded his head slowly. "That's great," He said, "I bet Harry will be thrilled."
"But," Said Lupin, and he shared another glance at Tonks before looking back at Kakashi, "We would like to make you Teddy's godfather as well."
Kakashi felt his heart spike in his chest as he looked at Lupin and Tonks in confusion. "Me?" He said, shaking his head, "I'm sorry I don't…"
"You were there for Tonks when I…when I should have been." Said Lupin, his gaze dropping from Kakashi's briefly in shame. "And that means a lot to her. To both of us." He clarified. "We both think that it will be important that you remain included in Teddy's life."
Kakashi didn't know what to say. For the first time in memory, he had been rendered utterly speechless.
"You don't have to say anything except yes." Tonks laughed. "Blimey, we've completely taken him by surprise, haven't we?" She said, looking at Lupin.
Kakashi was never going to be a father; he had too much emotional baggage that he was towing around with him and he had made his peace with the fact that he would be alone for the rest of his life. He had lost everyone else, but he still had Naruto and Sakura, and maybe even Sai and Yamato to fill the void. But what Lupin and Tonks were offering him…it was unthinkable. Even if Teddy wasn't his own son, he had a part of Tonks inside of him and Lupin too and that would be enough for him.
"Yes." Kakashi choked out and it hurt his ears to hear his voice cracking.
But Tonks and Lupin didn't care. They both smiled and Tonks held her arms out, eyes brimming with tears to embrace the newest member of her family.
The weeks following Naruto's arrival at Shell Cottage passed with little event. Mr. Ollivander eventually recovered enough to move to Aunt Muriel's home where he would be in better company. Although Harry had pleaded with both Luna and Dean about moving them as well, they elected to stay on with Harry and the others which only made Harry feel worse because he knew that they would be leaving soon.
No one outside of the group and Griphook knew about Harry's plan to break into the Lestrange's Gringotts vault and Harry went through great pains to keep it that way although he knew Bill suspected that something was up. Griphook had agreed to help them on the condition that he be given the Sword of Gryffindor. Neither Ron nor Harry were keen on giving him the sword and Hermione had been resistant to the idea of double-crossing him, but as the ninja saw it, they didn't have much choice.
On the morning of the vault break-in, the trio and the ninjas woke up early and snuck outside before the sun had even risen. Ron had left a note on the kitchen table saying good-bye to Bill, Fleur, Luna and Dean and Naruto had snuck out with most of Fleur's left over croissant rolls from the previous night.
Harry took one last look at the cottage. While it had been nice eating real food and sleeping in a real bed, this was the last time he would be looking upon Shell Cottage. They wouldn't be coming back.
They all picked their way down to the shoreline, where the waves were lapping lazily upon the shore. Griphook couldn't walk nearly as fast as they could, so Naruto shoved one last croissant in his mouth while he waited for him to climb down.
"Alright," Said Harry when they all gathered on the shore. "Sai?"
Sai nodded his head. "Henge!"
There was a poof of smoke and then suddenly, Bellatrix Lestrange was standing there on the beach with them. Her long, wild hair blew lazily in the wind as Sai looked down at himself and smoothed out his robes. "Does it look alright?" He asked.
"Terrifying." Said Ron with a shake of his head. He handed Sai the wand from the back of his pocket. "This is her real wand so I think you should be quite convincing."
"I still don't see why I shouldn't be Bellatrix." Said Hermione. "I mean, it would be repulsive, but I think it would make the most sense."
This wasn't a new argument for Harry to hear; Hermione had been arguing it ever since he proposed his plan. Harry glanced at Hermione's arm, as he always did when she said this. Her arm was covered, but peeking out from the sleeve of her sweatshirt, Harry should still make out the bandage that covered her wrist and he could easily imagine the gauze she still had hiding the letters Bellatrix had etched in her skin. No, Harry wouldn't allow her to risk herself like that again.
"It's alright, Hermione." Said Naruto cheerily. He had since turned into what could have been an Oto ninja with long dark hair and piercing black eyes. He gave Hermione a grin which looked positively strange on his new face. "Ron, Sai and I will have this under control!"
But Hermione just shook her head and began altering Ron's appearance with Harry's wand.
"Ok, let's go over our positions one last time." Said Harry.
"I'll be waiting inside Gringotts." Said Hermione with a dour expression.
"Sai, Naruto and I will Apparate outside the Leaky Cauldron and walk through Diagon Alley." Said Ron.
"And I'll be under the Invisibility Cloak with Griphook." Said Harry. "Good, let's go."
They headed out into the dark sky, just past Shell Cottage. Hermione threw the Invisibility Cloak over Harry and Griphook as Sai, Ron and Naruto Disapparated first. Then Hermione went with Harry and Griphook following behind.
The Leaky Cauldron was empty when Naruto, Sai and Ron stepped foot inside. The only inhabitant was Tom the innkeeper who was cleaning glasses behind the counter. He kept his expression neutral when he saw them.
"Madam Lestrange." He murmured.
"Peasant." Said Sai with hardly a glance toward the old innkeeper as he swept out of the bar with Ron and Naruto in tow. Ron glanced back, catching Tom's look of utter shock before he quickly went back to the task at hand.
"What," Naruto murmured once they had stepped foot into the backyard with the brick wall, "the hell was that?"
Sai turned Naruto, with Bellatrix's face a complete mirror of his customary look of blank surprise. "You made it very clear I should treat people like they don't matter. Was there something wrong with what I said?"
Ron gave a bark of laughter. He made sure no one was watching before he grabbed Sai's wand and tapped the bricks, opening the gateway to Diagon Alley. "Let's leave him alone. He's got it covered."
They stepped into Diagon Alley, the wall closing behind them. It was still early as they moved up the cobblestone street; the once popular shopping center was now mostly deserted. Ron looked around, his expression somber. "Things sure have changed." He murmured.
Naruto silently agreed. He hadn't been back to Diagon Alley since his first foray into the wizarding world all those years ago with Dumbledore, but he remembered how lively and magical it had been. But now, the alley looked destitute. Many shops had closed up, boards covering the windows and there were more Darks Arts stores that had opened than there had ever been before. Posters of Harry under the caption Undesirable Number One adorned walls and windows everywhere they turned. Wizards with their robes worn down into rags sat out in the street, their heads down and their hands out. Once they caught sight of Sai, however, they quickly fled into the shadows.
All of a sudden, an old beggar came staggering toward Sai, his face partially covered by a bloody bandage.
"My children!" He roared. "What has he done with my children? You know!"
He lunged forward, trying to grasp at Sai's throat but Naruto stepped forward and punched him down. Sai put a booted foot down on the man's chest, but the man was down for the count. Sai turned to look at Ron, but he just shook his head. "We have to be less noticeable." Ron said quietly.
"Why, Madame Lestrange!"
The trio froze at the sound of someone calling Bellatrix's name behind them. "Shit." Naruto muttered before they all turned to face the newcomer.
They found a well-dressed wizard making his way toward them, slight surprise on his face. "It's Travers." Ron muttered. "A Death Eater. I recognize him from the Lovegood house."
Sai stood straight as Travers approached them and lifted his chin slightly in the air. "What do you want?" He asked, giving Travers a pointed look.
Travers looked miffed. "I was only coming to greet you, Madame Lestrange, but if it is too much of an inconvenience for you…" He said coolly.
For a moment, Sai almost said yes. But then he thought better of it. Surely it would be suspicious if Bellatrix didn't treat Travers warmly? They were, after all, two likeminded individuals who served Voldermort. So were they friends? No…Sai wouldn't have considered any of his Ne teammates friends. Rivals then? Were both of them competing for Voldermort's affection? That didn't seem right either.
Sai pursed his lips. "I suppose not." He said, turning away as he lifted a shoulder. "This…scum attacking me has just left me a bit…on edge."
Sai and Travers' eyes trailed to the bloodied wizard who was still knocked out from Naruto's punch. "Yes," Agreed Travers solemnly. "It seems the wandless grow bolder every day. It was just last week that one approached me, asking if I would plead her case to the Ministry if you can believe that! It is lucky the Dark Lord grants you such protection." Travers eyes flickered toward Naruto but thankfully didn't linger long.
"I must express my surprise at seeing you out and about." Said Travers as they began moving up the street again. "I had heard that the Dark Lord confined the inhabitants of the Malfoy Manor after a…ah…escape you could say."
"I'm afraid that you have been sadly misinformed." Said Sai, a certain coolness in his voice. "The escape of one Mudblood girl isn't enough to warrant the Dark Lord's attention."
"Yes, I suppose you are right." Said Travers. "I heard he dispensed his pet to deal with the situation instead. He let her off her leash and she killed two of her own." Travers let out a small tch of disgust.
Both Naruto and Sai stiffened at Travers words. There was only one person he could have been talking about. Sai started to feel distinctly uncomfortable. If Travers let it slip out loud that Sakura had become a Death Eater in front of Naruto…Sai couldn't afford Naruto to lose his mind here, when there was so much at stake already.
"You will watch your tongue." Said Sai, and this time, the malice in his voice wasn't faked.
Travers had enough sense to look contrite. "I do apologize, Madame Lestrange. I know how instrumental you were in breaking the girl."
Sai remained silent at Travers words and instead stored that piece of information away for later when he could speak to the wizards about it in private. If there was a possibility that Sakura hadn't become a Death Eater of her own volition…if she had somehow been forced…maybe even tricked into becoming one…
He couldn't dwell on it. They had reached the high imposing doors of Gringotts. True to Griphook's word, there were two wizards standing guard out front, each armed with what looked like long golden sticks that were meant to scan for any magical concealment. Knowing that Harry should have been waiting there, with Griphook, Sai didn't feel any anxiety about getting in. Sai let Travers pass through first and when he stepped up, the guards each had a dazed look in their eyes. He tried to send what he thought was his most imposing look before gliding through.
Naruto had his doubts about allowing Sai to play Bellatrix. If it weren't for his own role he had to play in all of this, he would have rather played her himself. But Sai had done surprisingly well pretending to be Bellatrix and not only that, but they learned something about Sakura.
Naruto gritted his teeth. Bellatrix had played a part in 'breaking' Sakura; that's what Travers had said. Naruto hadn't told Sai or the wizards about Sakura's strange behavior that day in Godric's Hollow and he hadn't intended on it, but maybe he should, if they could offer some insight. Naruto had been scared; he thought Sakura was losing her mind but now the thought that maybe, Bellatrix had something to do with that. And if there was one thing Naruto knew, it was that Hermione was smart and that if this was due to magic, then magic could reverse it.
Naruto entered Gringotts behind Sai and he immediately spotted Hermione inside already, at the high counter speaking with one of the goblins. She didn't look as she usually did; she had a brightly colored, brand new robe on and a pair of fake glasses on her face. Her bushy hair was piled in a haphazard bun on top of her head. She was smilingly sweetly at the goblin in front of her, but she sent Naruto a look out of the corner of her eye.
As Sai strode toward the counter disguised as Bellatrix, Naruto discreetly flicked out smoke pellets toward the corners of the room.
"I'm here to access my vault." Said Sai as he reached the counter and stared up at the goblin.
"You have identification….?" The goblin asked. He had a nameplate that read 'Bogrod'.
Naruto bit his lip and Ron gave Sai a slight nudge beneath the counter. Sai narrowed his eyes at the goblin. "Identification? Is my presence not enough?"
Bogrod didn't bat an eyelash at being faced with a disdainful Bellatrix Lestrange. "Of course, Madame Lestrange." Said Bogrod coolly, "But with the current state of affairs, we want to assure our customers that they are getting the best security. Your wand will suffice."
Sai exchanged a glance with Ron before procuring the wand from his robes. At least they had the real thing. The goblin picked it up delicately and held it up, turning it this way and that. He looked at Sai, tilted his head and narrowing his eyes slightly.
It was then that Harry realized that they had made a mistake. The Malfoy's must have informed Gringotts about the stolen wands just in case anyone tried to access their bank accounts. It would be only seconds before Bogrod called Sai out for being an imposter.
"Act now!" Harry hissed in Naruto's ear.
Naruto didn't falter. He quickly flashed his hands through a couple of seals and the pellets exploded with a bang, dissolving the room into smoke. There were gasps and shouts of alarm from the goblins and the sound of feet pounding on the floor.
Harry pointed his wand at the goblin at the counter. "Imperio!"
The spell hit the Bogrod, whose eyes glazed over as the spell took effect. Naruto quickly guided Hermione over to them as Harry used his wand to instruct Bogrod to grab the keys to the vaults and lead them toward the carts.
They all managed to squeeze onto the cart and with a jerk, they started moving forward. They moved across the bumpy track, gathering more and more speed. Suddenly, they were speeding through tunnels and whipping around corners so fast that none of them would be able to retrace their steps even if they tried. Then suddenly, the track evened out as they sped toward a great chasm where a thunderous waterfall fell from overhead.
"No!" Yelled Griphook.
But it was too late. The cart sped off the track and shot through the waterfall. The wizards all let out a yell as they free fell through the dark chasm. But to Naruto's surprise, they did not hit the ground with a sickening crunch, but instead they drifted softly to the ground.
"Cushioning Charm." Said Hermione as she wiped water out of her eyes. Her hair had fallen from its bun and was now in messy wet clumps all around her face. The glasses had been lost in the fall.
"I'm me again." Said Sai as he sat up, looking at his hands.
"The Thief's Downfall!" Said Griphook as Harry and Ron looked at Sai in horror. "It washes away all magical concealment! They set off the defenses!"
They heard a groan and Harry turned to see Bogrod stand up, looking confused. His eyes widened when he saw all of them standing there.
"We still need him!" Griphook hissed.
Harry pointed his wand at the goblin. "Imperio." The goblin once again submitted to his will.
Hermione pointed her wand at the waterfall. "Protego!" The water successfully shot up to block the passageway. "That should buy us some time." She explained.
"Very good, now let's go." Said Griphook leading the way.
Harry followed behind him, lighting his wand as Naruto and Sai followed him, armed with kunai. As they rounded a corner, Harry saw what he expected to see blocking the doors to at least four of the vaults.
"Bloody hell!" Ron cried when he saw the gigantic dragon blocking the way.
"The Clankers, give them to me." Instructed Griphook.
Ron passed them over and Griphook began to shake them. "It is taught to fear the sound of the Clankers. When it retreats, Bogrod must press his palm to door." He instructed.
Sure enough, as Griphook advanced with the keys, the dragon let out a roar and retreated. Harry quickly swished his wand, making Bogrod press his palm to the door. There was a creaking sound and the vault door melted. Naruto widened his eyes at the sight of all the gold.
"Blimey…" Ron muttered. It was likely he had never seen this much gold in his entire life.
"There's no time!" Harry said as he grabbed a gaping Naruto and Ron and pulled them inside the vault. "We need to search quickly."
As soon as they stepped inside, the vault door shut behind them and plunged them all in darkness. "What…?!" Naruto turned around in surprise.
"Don't worry!" Griphook shouted through the darkness. "Bogrod can let us back out!"
With a muttered incantation, the wizards illuminated their wands and they began searching through the treasure.
"Here!" Said Hermione reaching out for a goblet. "Could this be…Ahh!" The goblet tumbled from her grip and crashed to the floor, multiplying in a shower as it hit the ground.
"It burned me!" Said Hermione nursing her finger.
"Don't touch anything!" Shouted Griphook. "They have added Gemino and Flagrante Curses!"
But even then, Naruto stumbled and accidentally knocked over a stack of galleons. They exploded into a shower of coins as Hermione and Sai each grabbed one of Naruto's arms to keep him upright. He nodded to them in thanks.
"Ok, we all just have to stay perfectly still." Harry instructed. "Just look around."
It was hard, staying still to keep from knocking anything else over, but with the amount of treasure surrounding them it was a necessity. Naruto was about ready to give up, his eyes already tired from straining themselves in the darkness when Sai suddenly pointed upward.
"There."
They all looked up to see a golden cup emblazoned with the symbol of Helga Hufflepuff high up on a shelf, surrounded by a dozen other objects.
"And how the hell are we supposed to get it from up there without moving?" Asked Naruto.
Harry pointed his wand. "Accio cup!" But the cup didn't even move.
Hermione sighed and shook her head. "The objects have been bewitched. We won't be able to get it using magic."
"The sword." Said Harry. "Maybe I can use the sword to hook it."
Hermione produced the sword from inside her robes and handed it to Harry. Harry tried to reach with the sword, but he wasn't tall enough. He gestured to Hermione helplessly when they heard banging and shouting coming from outside the vault door. Harry began to feel his connection with Bogrod outside the door wavering.
Effortlessly vaulting over the mounds of treasure, Sai reached the door and put his ear to it. There was a sickening crunch and the vault door shuddered. "We're going to be exposed any minute now." He called back.
Hermione pointed her wand. "Levicorpus."
Harry was suddenly hoisted upward by the ankle and he hit a suit of armor that fell over with clatter. Those below him screamed as they were hit with an onslaught of multiplying metal. But Harry reached out once he was eye level with the cup and snagged it by the tip of the sword.
"Liberacorpus!" Harry shouted and dropped down on to the sea of treasure.
The skin on Harry's back burned and sizzled as soon as he touched down on the treasure and the sword flew out of his hand and the cup soared through the air. Naruto dived and caught it, ignoring the burning sensation that struck his bare skin. Ron ran toward the vault door just as it screeched open, revealing a dozen wizards pointing wands at them and half a dozen armed goblins.
"Uhh, guys?" Said Ron.
"Protego!" Hermione shouted, pulling up a shield just as a dozen spells came their way.
Naruto picked up a fist full of galleons, ignoring the sizzling of his flesh as he flung them out toward the crowd of wizards and goblins. There were screams and shouts as the burning coins hit some in the face and multiplied. Harry and the others surged forward, while their pursuers were distracted and ran back out toward the waterfall.
Harry flicked his wand as he dodged another spell. "Where's the sword, where's Griphook?!"
"There he is!" Yelled Ron, pointing as the greedy goblin disappeared into the crowd.
"Little bastard!" Roared Naruto, as he slashed out a kunai. "He stole the sword!"
"Naruto!" Sai shouted. "Give us a distraction!" He pulled out his brush and scroll from underneath his clothes.
Naruto gave a sharp nod of his head and crossed his fingers over each other. "Kage Bunshin no Jutsu!"
Sai bent down, pulling the scroll over his knee as he scrawled out a large bird while Naruto's clones jumped toward the wizards and goblins. If this mission gave Sai anything, it was an exercise in drawing quickly. Very quickly. "Choju Giga."
The bird appeared with a poof, knocking out some of the goblins. "Get on!" Sai yelled, jumping on.
There were several distinct poofing sounds as the kage bunshins disappeared while Harry, Ron, Hermione and Naruto jumped on. The bird raised in the air with a powerful flap of wings as the wizards summoned some brooms.
"Let's get out of here!" Yelled Ron.
Naruto tossed an exploding tag at the wall and activated it. With a bang, it exploded, leaving a large hole in the wall. They soared through to the outside world, just in time as the wizards flew after them.
"They don't let off robbery easily do they?" Asked Naruto looking back.
A spell just flew past Harry's ear as they swerved left and right, trying to lose the wizards.
Hermione looked back. "Stupefy!" She yelled. But the spell missed.
Another spell was sent their way, and it nearly hit Ron as he scooted back. But he scooted back too far and began falling backwards off the bird. Harry grabbed hold of his hand in the nick of time as Ron dangled in the air.
"Bloody hell! Get me back up there!" Ron yelled.
They swerved again and Harry pulled him back up with a crash. Naruto reached for more kunai, but found it was getting low. He retracted his hand. "Crap." He cursed.
"Naruto!" Called Sai.
Sai tossed him a small ball from his pouch. Naruto looked down at it. "Got it." He grinned.
He threw it as Sai activated it. It exploded, covering about half of the wizards in ink. They fell back as the other half still pursued.
"Reducto!" Shouted Hermione. But only a small puff of air went out. She shook her head.
"It's no use! They're getting closer!" She cried.
Sai looked down. They had left land long ago and were now skimming over a lake. They had been inside the vault for at least a couple of hours and the sun was now dazzling overhead and sending up sharp reflections from the water. Sai glanced back toward the wizards and began lowering the bird closer to the water.
"Why are we getting lower?" Ron cried.
Naruto looked toward Sai, his eyes wide with alarm. "You're going to have to trust me." Said Sai simply. "Can you do that?"
Naruto looked at him hesitantly, but then gave him an emphatic nod of his head. Naruto reached out, grabbing for Hermione's wrist.
The wizards were almost directly behind them now. A stunning spell came dangerously close to Harry's head when Sai stood up. "Jump!" He yelled and he gave Ron a shove off the bird before following close behind. Hermione grabbed Harry's hand and together with Naruto they jumped, shrieking.
Just before Sai hit the water, he held his hands in a hand seal before the bird exploded in midair, covering the approaching wizards in ink. With a few shouts, they fell back as Sai hit the water with a splash.
