Escape the Fate

Chapter 12: The Reason Why

Garrus POV

The first impression he got on the siblings had only been brief but enough to know that their relationship was not normal. It was true he did not know much of the human culture, but the relationship between the two had to be an odd one even for human standards. The two seemed to be in an endless dispute, and though Quinn was the one who pulled the gun, John did not do much to disarm it, which meant whatever problem they had with each other wasn't solved. It hung over the two like a constant cloud and anyone could feel the tension. Even though he couldn't read human expressions, he knew very well whenever people was expecting trouble and all of the Alliance soldiers acted like they were about to jump into an all out war whenever the two siblings spoke to one another.

It was exactly what was happening at the very moment.

Garrus had heard their arrival even before the pair had stepped off the elevator and it wasn't long before the rest in the cargo hold noticed it too. At first he hadn't though much of it and had kept working on checking the systems on the M35 Mako and had already thought of a few possible upgrades he could install in the vehicle. But when he heard the pirate shout, did his attention shift and he had thrown the pair a curious glance.

Only a few steps away from the elevator had the pirate stopped dead in her tracks while John was walking into the hold, heading Garrus' way. John had a twist on his face and the small fuss over his eyes was drawn toGether and close to the eyes. Quinn on the other hand had her head slightly down the short end of her fringe was down her forehead and over one of the eyes, while the long part was down her shoulder and back. He had to admit that the humans fringes was something that fascinated him. But underneath that golden fringe he could see her eyes was big, possibly in disbelief before they narrowed and even Garrus could see the homicidal look in her eyes from where he stood.

To his left, in the corner of the hold near the ramp, he had seen the Gunnery Chief prepare herself to intervene if Quinn was about to do what they were all thinking while krogan mercenary looked on quite amused. Whatever it was that made the pirate decide against striking John in the back as he walked off was something they all should probably be thankful for.

Not that their discussion ended there. No, John told her over his shoulder that their destination was final which Quinn apparently didn't approve of and she had no problem in letting everyone hear her disapproval.

Garrus hadn't had much interactions with the female Shepard to completely form his own opinion about her. He knew her criminal record. It was a well known fact she was a criminal and a murderer. The whole C-Sec force had been notified of her arrival to the Citadel before the hearing with the Council and hat taken heavy percussions. His superiors had not liked the idea of a vicious pirate warlord being able to walk freely and had given the Alliance an ultimatum; If the pirate didn't have an Alliance escort with her at all times, then she would be arrested. However, because Garrus had been all too occupied on his own case regarding Saren, he had not given the human pirate much thought. All he had gathered about her so far was that she had a hot temper, liked to mess with everyone and she didn't seem to like to be told what to do.

John on the other hand had he managed to form an opinion of. Though his relationship with his sister wasn't a good one, the man seemed to value a good relationship with his crew and fellow soldiers. The man seemed to be trustworthy and ambitious. He seemed to be a good man who wanted to help people. An admirable shooter. Calm and collected in most situations and from that Garrus guessed he would probably do good as a Spectre.

Because of that Garrus had thanked the man for bringing him along. Finally he would be able to do things the way he wanted and there was no restrictions and red tape to hold him back. Or so he had thought and also voiced to the Commander. It had not been well received. But it wasn't like John had been his first superior who had not seen eye to eye when it came to how the regulations had restricted him from doing his job. No he had had plenty of them.

During their little chat, Garrus had thrown the pirate, who had placed herself so that the three of them had formed an odd triangle with her standing to the Garrus right but slightly behind John, a worried glance from time to time as she had looked like she was about to throttle the Commander at any given moment. At some point she had actually turned her attention to what he had spoken and shown an interest. But compared to the Commander, she had actually approved of his way of thinking.

Quinn's comments had not shocked the two men, but it had in fact surprised Garrus what an impact it did on him. He already knew she was violent, yet the way she had said it was like she knew what he had spoke of and understood. It wasn't like he wanted to become a corrupted officer who would beat and extort the crap out of people to get a head in his career. No that wasn't his goal at all. But what was so frustrating to him was how easy it was for the criminals to avoid incarceration by legal means when in fact it should be the opposite. The laws should not protect the offender and condemn the victim. Yet without solid proof, if even then, the criminals walked away free only to be able to continue their crimes. He had become an C-Sec officer to protect the innocent, not the criminals.

So he had stepped away from C-Sec when they had made it impossible for him to arrest Saren. He had not quit because he wanted to, but because he needed to. The Citadel had nothing to give him and he needed to see something else and get another perspective. He needed to find a new way to believe in criminal justice and thought that going with a Specter would do just that. John Shepard and the Alliance had also investigated in Saren and they had found solid proof of his treachery. That enough told him that they were going to get him. After all, humans seemed to have a tendency of getting the job done in ways that no other races had. He couldn't explain it, but he knew he was where he needed to be.

Even though their conversation had been completely different, Quinn had still somehow managed to circle back to the argument she had had with John by using his own words against him.

"But it's okay if you endanger people by ignoring the best lead we have to get Saren, to go and save a colony? A colony you have no idea if they're even still alive?"

The fuss on Johns forehead drew toGether in that same crumble as before. With a heavy and long sigh, the tone he used next explained the expression on his face.

Irritated. John turned to her and answered, hoping it would bring an end to the subject; "I told you Quinn, this discussion is over. We're going to Feros. There is nothing you can do about that." He did not wait for a respond from the pirate, nor did he see what reaction he received. Instead, he ignored her and turned towards Garrus again, his expression set back to normal as he said; "I will see you later, Garrus."

"Commander," Garrus replied with a courteous nod before the man turned and pressed by the pirate who only fallowed him with her dark gaze.

Garrus had his eyes linger on the pirate for a moment more. Even though he couldn't see her face because of the golden fringe, he could see her jaw being clenched hard and her talons was digging deep into her palms as her shoulders was stiff. What followed was a harsh muttering, probably not intent to be heard, but he did not miss it.

"We will see about that..."

He thought he heard her teeth crack but all he could think of was that she would injure her palms if she kept that up.

"If you keep clenching your, em... hands - like that you're going to break your skin," he said, a bit hesitantly at first, but he actually managed to get her attention.

The glance she threw him through the fringe was narrowed and piercing. Probably intent to intimidate him and he guessed most people would probably cringe under her stare but he wasn't intimidated and returned it with his own calm expression. Their eyes met for a brief moment before he looked down to her clenched fists which had her knuckles turned white and then back up to her eyes again. Her stare did not falter at first, but then she gave in and followed his gaze. As she loosened her grip, the color returned to her normal one and revealed deep red marks which looked close to breaking the surface.

One other thing which was fascinating, though this wasn't just restricted to humans, but to most of the races, was their soft skin. As turian's skin was thick because of the exoskeleton, other races looked more vulnerable and squishy. Though she didn't seem to care that she had nearly pierced her skin and there was no race of pain in her expression. He had seen humans, though mostly children, cry from the tiniest scratch or mark.

"It's either my skin or John's head," she roared between her teeth as she threw a last glance towards John before he disappeared behind the door to the engineering. She didn't even try to hide her disgust and it got even deeper as she turned away from Garrus completely. "And he will have his head until I have Saren's."

The threat was real. What was holding her back from apparently killing her brother was Saren. Garrus found himself wondering how and why a brother and sister had gotten such a dreadful relationship. It made him think of his relationship with his own sister. Of course they had had their bad moments and fights but not nearly as bad as wanting to hurt one another. He couldn't ever imagine a motive for ever harming Solana nor hating her to that extent which Quinn seemed to hate John.

"I take it you two don't see eye to eye," Garrus stated the obvious before he turned back to the console.

He didn't know why, but he suddenly felt a bit uncomfortable. He guessed John already knew about his sister's hatred, otherwise he wouldn't let her walk around the ship freely. But did he really know to which extent she hated him? And when they actually got Saren, would Quinn try to kill him then? He guessed only time would tell.

"Really? What gave us away?" She asked with a snarky tone over her shoulder.

It seemed she had changed her mind of leaving and instead walked up next to him to lean against the Mako with one foot up against it and her arms crossed underneath her breasts, making them pop. Her eyes was downcast ad hidden underneath the golden fringe but he could see the frown on her lips as she spoke callously; "He's a self righteous idiot who can't see the bigger picture. He's so hell bent on saving everyone, that h doesn't realize he has already failed. He will keep failing as long as he makes judgment calls based on feelings and not logic."

Even for him, that seemed a bit too harsh. Of course Saren was their main objective and stopping the Reapers would indeed save every life in the galaxy if it indeed was like the records had said that they had killed the whole galactic civilization fifty thousand years ago. But if there was people out there that needed help, then they should try to save them too.

Although Garrus could see her point of view also. Saren was a greater threat and brought bigger evil with him if they didn't stop him soon. If it indeed was like Quinn had said, then there may be a chance that the colony had already been killed and Saren would have gotten away even further. But there would be no way of knowing that until they had gotten to the colony to see if there was anyone alive.

It was indeed a tough choice and a hell of a judgment call. One Garrus was glad that he wasn't the one who would make that choice. He did not envy John at the moment.

An amused snort suddenly escaped the pirate which caught his attention. Her mouth was twisted with one corner up into a smirk. "But I don't need to tell you that. You know what I'm talking about." The smirk dropped and she looked more grim. "Tell me, turian-"

"Garrus," he growled rather offended but she only threw up her hand to wave it away nonchalantly before she continued.

"Turian, C-Sec, Garrus, Big-Blue-Face, -whatever." Her shoulders shrugged to emphasize her nonchalant. "What would you do?" She brought up her hand and let a finger lose to make a number one as she pierced her eyes at him. "Find the daughter of Saren's side-kick who may know their whereabouts or at least point us at the right direction -" A second finger got up and she looked away while her tone got degrading. "- Or go and save a colony who almost-most-defiantly has already been killed by the Geth and even if we went there and Saren would be even further gone into space."

Turning down to the display before him, he said simply; "It doesn't matter what I think."

"Of course it does." The tone was forceful, but not pushy or demanding. She pushed herself of the Mako before she walked up to the console and put her hands on it, which made him look at her as she leaned in closer to stare into his eyes. "You could either think for yourself - or be a puppet."

He threw her a suspicious eye. The way she was pushing the subject had a deeper meaning. He had not missed the way she had used her body language to manipulate him. Presenting her breasts and body to show her hips and waist, the way she threw him glances at precise moments. And now getting up and close. It was all classic psychological tricks to manipulate him. Something he had seen much of in the C-Sec when dealing with women.

Instead of letting her have her way, he let her know he wasn't as easily controlled. "Who's puppet? Yours - or the Commanders'?

For a brief moment, the two just stared at each other and he could see the gear turning inside her head. It was the first time Garrus really got a good look at the pirate's blue and green eyes. The right blue eye was the same blue as the sky on Palaven right after a storm. While the left green eye reminded him of a stone on a necklace his mother had worn when he was younger.

The full smirk returned on her lips and an amused snort escape before she pushed herself off the console to stand straight. "I like you, Big-Blue-Face. -You're sharp."

He followed her with his gaze as she walked around him, still eyeing her suspiciously without commenting. He only turned to look at her fully when she spoke next.

"Don't let John make you a copy of him," she said lightly, though he couldn't see which face she made as she said it as she stood with her back against him.. "Just because he's a Spectre now doesn't mean he's always right." She turned to look at him fully, her teeth now showing and tone cheerful. "Sometimes the right way is the violent way."

"I guess you use that quite often?"

Her lips grew wider but at the same time twisted before she let her body spin on the ball of her feet with a sparkle in her eyes. "When I have to," she said simply before leaving and heading towards the elevator.

Garrus watched her leave as he was thinking it would be interesting to see what the pirate was going to contribute to the team. He was sure she would make real of the comment she had given John and he wouldn't be surprised if they found themselves exactly where she wanted them to be. It would certainly be interesting to find out.

He returned to the console and went back to work on the Mako much more intrigued than he had been before their little chat.

John's POV

John couldn't believe what he saw with his own two eyes. The bright blue orbs stared at the Galaxy map in complete disbelief as he took in the sight of the red planet. Somehow, for some wicked reason, they were not where he had expected them to be. He couldn't take his eyes off of the cluster and solar system which they had just arrived in and had to recheck just to be sure his eyes weren't deceiving him.

At first he thought it had to be a bad joke from Joker's part, but then thought better of it. There was no way the pilot would stoop so low in jeopardizing the mission just for joke. After all, the pilot was a professional when it came to flying and took it seriously even if he could be easy going in general. No, this was someone else's doing and John knew exactly who was the culprit.

"Where the hell is Quinn?" he yelled into the inter come and the roar echoed throughout the ship, though he did not care at all.

His question went unanswered and he guessed no one knew where the pirate was hiding. Gripping the railing harder underneath his knuckles, he contemplating how he should deal with the situation. He could see how Pressly and the rest of the crew in the CIC gave him weary glances, but none of them spoke which he was thankful for. How this had gone unnoticed was beyond him and even though he knew it wasn't Joker's fault, he couldn't help but be somewhat angry at the pilot for not noticing earlier. But as Joker had explained it; it had been a hack in the navigation system and though he saw them heading towards Feros, in reality they had gone to Therum. It was something the two of them had heard of, but never seen before.

A growl managed to escape through his lips as he thought about his sister. How she had done it was beyond him and at the same time admirable. There was more to her than a simple vanguard and if it wasn't for her ruthlessness, then she could actually do a lot of good in the galaxy. However that thought didn't help the anger which was fueling his already growing resentment of her which was also directed at himself.

He should have expected she was going to do something, yet he had not seen it coming. Somehow he still thought of her as his little sister who had admired him and listened to what she had been told without much opposition - or at least hoped she was still in there somewhere. Was it really so farfetched to believe they would actually be able get a long at some point? Maybe it was foolish of him to believe it. After all, she was hell bent on defying him in any way she could and it was slowly driving him into madness.

However, Anderson's words lingered in his mind. "Your sister may be difficult to handle, but she is a good woman, John. Doesn't like to be told what to do, as you already know." Oh, yes, he knew that very well and was beginning to learn to what exact extent. "But she knows what she's doing. Hear her out before you shut her down."

He had to admit he had shut her down rather quickly. But saving a colony was more important than finding a far of clue on a far off planet. There was no guarantee that this daughter of Benezia would know where her mother was and if she did, there were even less guarantee she would tell them if she knew why they wanted to know. Sure, John would eventually have them go there and questioning the woman but not until they had saved the innocent colonists from being killed by the Geth Why couldn't Quinn understand that innocent lives was at stake and they could actually do something to prevent it? No one could be so cold and heartless!

But as John was standing there now, in the wrong cluster, he had to make a choice. They could either head to Feros, which would take hours only to have it double to come back again later to ask a simple question, or they could just head down to the planet they were already hovering over right away. It was one question they were going to ask. Something which shouldn't take long and effortless. The choice was an easy one to make, but it somewhat hurt his pride and morals to make it.

Tuning to the inter come, he spoke with a strong tone, still his anger evident within it. "Alenko. Tali. Meet me in the cargo hold, ready to head out."

Kaidan spoke up instantly; "Roger that, sir!"

While Tali's more casual reply followed shortly. "Yes! Heading there now."

They were only going to speak with the woman, which meant he wouldn't need a team based on combat strength, which would probably intimidate the woman. And if they had another race with them, then he hoped the asari would be more comfortable in speaking with them. Many of the races was wary whenever they had to deal with the Alliance or humans in general and it often automatically backfired. The humans was still the newcomers and until they had proven themselves then they would still be pushed to the side.

"Joker, status report." The tone he used was harsher than he would normally use when he spoke to the pilot, but he couldn't help it.

"Eleven minutes out, Commander," Joker replied without much delay.

"Be ready for drop off. I'm taking the Mako," John said before he headed down to the cargo hold. As he walked, he kept an eye out for the mischievous pirate, but he couldn't spot her. Although he knew she would show up as he had a feeling she would insist on coming along. After everything she had done to get them here, there was no way she would allow herself to stay on the ship.

As he entered the hold, Kaidan and Tali was already standing next to the Mako, waiting. The Mako was also ready to go and the two was already in their armors, well, one of them was always in it. John put on his own armor and had a last check through his many weapons. Though he probably wouldn't need them, he felt naked without them.

"We're ready, Commander," Kaidan said as he walked up to the pair.

"Good. Then let's find Liara T'Soni and ask her about her mother."

John opened the door to the Mako and threw a quick glance throughout the hold one last time before stepped inside the vehicle. But whom he had looked for in the hold, he found sitting at the steering wheel with her legs and arms crossed and a smug look on her face.

"Surprise," she greeted them with a satisfied tone.

Just seeing her made him feel angry again and he couldn't hold back the growl from escaping. "Get the hell out," he spoke through greeted teeth.

A brow raised on her triumph expression. "Oh? A sore loser are we?"

"I'm not telling you again." His tone grew darker and could almost sense the apprehension from the two behind him.

The smug look on her face disappeared and she grew serious as she turned to face him fully in the spin chair. "No. I'm not leaving." Her head tilted down a little so she could stare up at him with that forceful look in her eyes. "You may have forgotten the deal I made with Anderson, but I sure haven't. I will be on every single mission if I choose to, just to make sure you do your job and not get side tracked."

"Saving people is not getting "side tracked" that's-."

"I know you want to play the hero, John," she interrupted him and threw up a hand to make him stop. "I get it, you've always been that way.-" She rolled her eyes at that. "But saving people who will die anyway because you don't prevent the bigger threat is just a waste of time."

"And if Benezia's daughter doesn't know where her mother is, what do you call that?" He challenged.

"One clue crossed of the list," was her simple reply. "And I will be there to hear it whether you like it or not."

He let himself consider it for a moment. If he truly wanted, he could have her restrain and locked up again, only to have her break loose and probably endanger his crew again. The two soldiers who had guarded her had miraculously lived, but not without permanent damage. She had told them she had hold herself back and if she really wanted them dead, then they would have been. A part of John couldn't believe how Anderson had made such a deal with a criminal in the first place, regardless of how they knew each other. To trust someone like her was asking a lot of the crew, but because they respected Anderson and trusted him, they had agreed to give the pirate a chance. Once chance. Which she wasn't making it easy for herself.

Even if he was furious with her, he knew it would be futile to argue with her. She would see to it she got her way one way or another, and force would be her first choice. Even if he knew that, his pride wouldn't let him falter so easily. "Fine," he said, which earned him a surprised brow to shoot up on her forehead, but he wasn't done yet. "If you answer that question."

At first she looked like she didn't know what he was talking about. But then her face froze in shock for a second, before it turned cold and eyes narrowed. There was no way he could miss the twitching in her lips, nor the clenching in her jaw. They were both staring each other down but neither of them would give up easily. For whatever reason she had for not wanting to tell him, made him even more certain that he needed to know. There was pain in her eyes and if it had been there before or if it was fairly new, he had no idea. He didn't expect her to tell him about her life, he knew he had lost that right a long time ago, but when it affected his mission and the lives of others, then it was his business.

Quinn and Nihlus had been connected somehow and whatever it had been had made her allow herself to stay under Alliance custody when in fact she had killed every soldier she had crossed paths with. Her motivation was crucial for him and the whole team. If they couldn't trust her this mission was doomed to fail even before it had truly begun. She may have no problem with working under such circumstances, but he could not. He needed to know he could trust the ones watching his back whenever he was out on the field. There was no point in having a crew member which only looked after herself and would have no problem with leaving people behind.

There was no telling what was going through her mind at that moment, but when he saw tears form behind her eyes, the grim look on his face loosened a little. As she had made up her mind, she sat straight in the chair and raised her head to a small tilt, though her face remained was stony.

"Saren killed Nihlus right before my eyes." There was no feelings in her tone as she spoke, but he did not miss the slight crack in the voice as she continued. "A man I once loved."

A sharp inhale was heard behind him, followed with a; "Oh Keelah!"

John threw an eye to the side automatically, but he couldn't see the quarian behind him before he returned his shocked gaze back to the pirate. He suspected the two had known each other, but he hadn't even in his wildest imagine thought it had been to that extent. Question after question popped up into his mind one after the other. When was this? How did it begin? Why did it end? How long had it been going on? Did the Council know? How could she even be interested in a turian? Why would a turian be interested in a human? How would that even work? A Specter and a pirate? - It sounded like a cheesy love story. Other thoughts similar to those followed but he voice none of them.

"Satisfied now?" She hissed through her teeth and his questions was cut off and she turned her seat forward.

For the first time in a long time, John didn't know what to say or how to react. He couldn't even begin to imagine the pain and grief she was going through. It was hard enough finding out someone you knew had died, not to mention been murdered. But she had been there and witnessed it. It couldn't be easy to uphold that cold exterior when in fact, she was probably breaking inside. None of them had made it easier for her even though she had been the one fighting at every turn. But it had indeed explained her dead set motivation with following Saren at every turn.

He was feeling uncomfortable and uncertain. "Uhum.. em. I-ya.. um..."

"Did you lose your mobility when you swallowed your tongue?" She snapped as she threw the three a sideways glance. "Or was it just your brain that stopped operating all toGether? Grab a fucking seat already and let's go!"

John had to mentally shake himself into action. He walked up to the front of the Mako and stopped just by her side. "Fine, you're coming along. But you listen to me. You got that." It wasn't a question.

She threw up her hands to a whatever response, but he did not miss the slight shrug in her shoulders and the dismissive glint in her eyes. It would do for now.

"Good. But you're not driving, so get the hell out of my seat."

Like she had expected it, she easily moved out of the seat and took the one behind it. He threw her a glance before he sat down himself and begun to turn on the vehicle and gave the systems one last check. Beside him, Tali slipped into the passenger seat and Kaidan took the one behind her.

As they waited for drop off, they all sat in complete silence. It was a relief when Joker's voice broke through the com.

"One minute until drop off, Commander."

"Roger that."

The lock on the hatch was released and it slowly opened. When Joker gave the clear, John put the vehicle in motion and drove of the hatch and let it fall.

Quinn's POV

"Keelah!"

"Commander watch out!"

"Are you fucking kidding me?! Watch out for the damned magma!" Quinn screamed in panic as she kicked the back of the chair where John was sitting with all her might.

Fortunately for him, the back seats wasn't able to move forward but the force still threw him up against the wheel. Probably wasn't the smartest move she had done, but she couldn't help react any other way. Panic and anger resulted in violence.

Furious, John roared over his shoulder; "Like I can avoid it when you kick me in the back, damn it!" and at the same time, he turned the wheel to avoid the large pit of melted stone only to have to turn again to avoid falling into a magma flood to their right. "Damned that was close!"

"Close?! We were seconds away from melting!" Quinn yelled as she dug her fingers into the back of his chair, resisting the urge grabbing a hold of his head and squeeze it.

"Don't be so over dramatic. We're fine," John said with a dismissive tone as it had been the dumbest thing he had ever heard.

A growl escaped her. They had only been on the planet for about ten minutes and already they had been close to death three times because of John's driving. Even having to take down those two Geth Aamatures the Geth Dropship had dropped in front of them was less stressful and the chances of them being killed was slimmer. But the idiot with the steering wheel refused to accept it and kept on driving.

It took him a while, but eventually, John managed to get the Mako to steer straighter, but far from perfect and the bumpy ride was kind of making her nauseous. It was almost like he hit the rocks on purpose to annoy her but as she looked at the other two, the two didn't fare any better. The quarian and Mini-John let out a breath they had been holding in as they drove away from the magma floods, probably just as relived as Quinn was but none of them relaxed completely. In the corner of her eyes, she could see that Kaidan wanted to say something to John, but the man hesitated and then let his mouth close shut again. However, Quinn wasn't as modest and had no problem in complaining.

She shot out of her seat to stand over John as she screamed over his head; "Are you insane?! Who the fuck gave you a driver's license anyhow? You. Can't. Fucking drive!"

As she looked down on her brother, she could see a vein pop out on his forehead and he slightly turned to scream back at her."Of course I can't when I have someone screaming in my ear!"

"Then fucking drive straight you jackass!" Her hand threw out to the window screen in front of them to emphasize the swaying.

"I'm driving as straight as I possible-," but his sentence was cut short as the computers begun to chime to notify them of laser-guided ordnance ahead and most certainly more enemies.

"More Geth?" Kaidan asked what they were all thinking.

"Maybe. Let's check it out," John said, his tone gone from angry to serious.

John turned to look at the navigation screen to see if they were nearing the coordinates Joker had sent them of the possible underground complex, but as he did so, his hands on the wheel followed and the Mako abruptly turned with it. They were all nearly shot out of their seats and Quinn was thrown against the wall and hit her head. A hand shot up to the aching spot and the anger was fired up instantly but before she could even open her mouth another voice interrupted her.

"Rock-a-rock-a-rock- A large rock ahead!" Tali yelled in panic as soon as she had caught herself from being thrown out of her seat.

Quinn's eyes shot up to the wall of rocks which was quickly approaching and she could almost feel the color in her face drain away.

Kaidan was quick to follow Tali's alarm with; "Eyes on the road, Commander! Eyes on the road!"

John quickly turned his attention back to the screen but he had no chance to react before Quinn leaned over and grabbed the wheel as she screamed; "Watch out for the large rock, you idiot!"

In the last second, was she able to steer them away from the large wall of rocks and kept it straight as it drove to the more even soil. Everyone except for her brother, let out a loud sigh of relief. But it wasn't long before John forced her hands away from the steering wheel and the anxiety returned.

Annoyed, John exclaimed; "I know how to drive, damn it! Now sit down and be quiet so I can concentrate."

Reluctantly, she sat back into her seat but kept a watchful eye on the screen, not daring to look away in case John decided to do another abrupt turn. The ride kept being bumpy and no matter how much he tried, John couldn't get the Mako to drive smoother. It even got to the point where he blamed the constructors, the inventors to the planet's evolution. Anyone except himself. It was clear her brother was sensitive about his driving and it satisfied her to know he actually had a flaw and one which wouldn't be easily fixed.

As they had headed up the hill and then turned to a left, they found themselves just short distances away from an outpost. The gate blocked the way forward and guarding it was three heavy turrets. Not even a second past before the machines detected them and shot out missiles. Before they had even time to react, the mass shield was hit and the systems threw out a deafening warning. John threw into actions and moved the out of the way from another rain of missiles , but the turrets followed their movements.

"I don't think we can take that strongpoint head-on," Kaidan said as another missile got a direct hit.

"I will shoot them down with the cannon," Quinn said and was about to move over to its controls, but John turned her down.

"No, you're not. We're going around. There's a road up ahead," John ordered and drove them there as fast as he could, making the vehicle sway by the force and nearly throwing them all out of their seats again.

"So I'm just going to sit here and keep myself from throwing up when we have a perfectly good gun on the roof?" Quinn exclaimed with disapproval.

"Yeah, you are. Until I tell you otherwise, you stay in your seat," John ordered as he drew through the narrowed path between the wall of rocks.

But they didn't get far until they where meet with another turret blocking their way. Much to Quinn's disappointment and complaint, she wasn't allowed to touch the cannon. Instead John put Kaidan on the job. After another agonizing moment of being a bystander, the turret finally exploded and pieces flew at every direction and John continued to drive ahead

"Geth ahead!" Tali warned as they neared the outpost.

Finally having enough of this, Quinn stood up and headed to the door. She needed to shoot and kill something. To feel something being crushed underneath her strength. Since she had told John about her relationship with Nihlus, he had looked at her with pity. And so had the other two. If it wasn't for John's poor driving, then she would have pulled all of their eyes out. She didn't want pity. Nor did she want empathy. She was doing fine as long as she wasn't reminded of his death. But there was no way she would let herself break down. And defiantly not in front of these goodie- two-shoes. Her pride would not allow it.

Pushing the door open, she didn't even hear John's protest before she jumped out of the vehicle, her shotgun ready in her hands as she let herself roll on the ground and came to a halt on her legs. Drawing at her implant, a biotic field surrounded her before she charged forward, crossing the distance in a flash and then slammed a fist into the Geth's optics, followed with a shot to its stomach.

It didn't take long before the Mako drove up the outpost and out came the rest of the team, weapons ready in hands.

Thank you for reading!

Please comment, fave and/or follow so you don't miss the next chapters!

So happy that you like the story. Garrus POV was a little experiment and I have to tell you it was quite difficult to write that one, but I had to try it. Was it to your liking and do you want more of his POV?

See ya later!

No teaser this time, however;

Well.. I think you know who will show up next. So the question remains...

Who do you want John to end up with?

Ashley or Liara?

(Those who is voting for Tali, don't worry, she may be a candidate later ^^)
