Shoulda, woulda, coulda?

Zaf tugged his jacket closer to him, waiting for Zoe to catch him up. She logged off her computer before heading towards him. Neither of them could miss how still Lucas seemed as he spoke to the caller. Zoe shook her head.

"Home, now."

Zaf nodded, knowing his fiancé was right but also worried about his friend. He knew Ros would be aware of his state of mind but after spending so much time as a captive of the infamous Redbacks he knew Lucas would be going through the same emotions as he had when they had come back into his life. The FSB had been responsible for stealing eight years of Lucas' life and despite being happy and settled now, Zaf knew that feeling of dread never really left. He glanced back towards Zoe before nodding and heading through the Pods. He just hoped the murkier the case got the more they would be able to look after their friend.

"Harry?" Ruth stood in his office as he looked out onto the Grid. Aware that the only members of the team still left on the Grid were her, Ros and Lucas. Henry had left them a lot to consider. Harry nodded once at the glass window.

"Darshan died. Arkady died. I was there on both occasions."

Ruth nodded. She had already known that he had been present when both Russian men had met their end. What she didn't want to know was what his actual involvement in their demise was. She knew Harry was a good man - a good man who had done some questionable things. All for the Greater Good.

"Darshan was a torturer. He was evil."

"You wont hear me argue against that." Harry paused. "I think this case is getting to Lucas."

"Yes, as well as you, Ros, Alec and Henry." Ruth folded her arms. Harry stepped towards her.

"Your point?"

"You and Juliet were officers serving under Henry. He was the boss. You were both captured on his watch by these cloning squads. You know what they did to you. Alec still loves Juliet."

Harry frowned slightly. "Harry, you don't stop loving someone just because they did something that you disagree with, something that hurt you." She closed her eyes as he touched her hand.

"I know. I just didn't think Jules was as lucky as me." His voice softened as she opened her eyes. Ruth smiled slightly.

"Anyway, the files show that Darshan was a much more accomplished torturer compaired to thise that you and Juliet met." Ruth touched his hand as he held her gaze. Harry had pushed all thoughts of his time in Moscow out of his mind. He knew he was able to shut down that part of his memory; pretend that the time he spent with Arkady in the late 1990s just didn't happen. He knew Lucas had been trying and apparently failing to deal with memories from years earlier.

"He's dead."

"Yes." Ruth nodded as they both watched Lucas angrily slam his desk drawer shut before heading out of the Grid. Ros called out after him, swearing when he ignored her. "You know that and I know that. He's still alive though. In Lucas' head."

"You think I should pull him off the case?"

"No." Ruth shook her head as she watched the Pod doors closed. "I think we should watch him. Make sure he and Ros are coping. I've had surveillance put on Juliet too. Just because the woman's murder was faked doesn't mean they wont try for real."

Harry nodded. He was exhausted, he knew his wife was right. Lucas was not the most outspoken member of his team but he knew the years he had been incarcerated in a Russian Gulag was something even the most gifted therapists wouldn't be able to erase. The Lucas he knew now was not the man he had known before he had been captured.

"Good idea."

"So what now?"

"If I send Lucas to Tring, then Ros may well have my balls on a plate."

Ruth smirked slightly as Harry shook his head. "She's going to need us. Her friends. If Lucas is the intended target in all this. Think about it. We know Romanov started the facial reconstruction programme originally. So far, your clone has been murdered, we have a Juliet look a like in the mortuary, Maria has been killed along with the only known Russian politician who could possibly know about the project and those who were targeted. None of them have tried to contact us."

"But Lucas gets a phone call."

"And Henry is back on the scene." Ruth leant against Harry's desk, clearly exhausted. "He only tends to crawl out the woodwork when something he was involved with is coming back to haunt him." Ruth rested her head against his shoulder as Harry stood next to her.

Lucas headed towards Picadilly Underground station knowing it was far too late to be open. The first train wouldn't be ready to leave the station until 6 am. It was now a little after 4. He headed into the deserted building knowing that the only people likely to see him there were the few rough sleepers that used the place for shelter in the colder months.

"Lucas." He stopped as he heard a familiar voice. "Don't you ever walk away from me like that again."

"Ros." He sounded exhausted as he turned to see her watching him. Her eyes on him so intense he half expected tasers to shoot out from her irises and blow him away.

"You shouldn't have followed me."

"I'm not just your wife. I am also your senior officer and I have never pulled this card before. You know that." Her voice was low as she stepped towards him. "You didn't report who the caller was, you didn't give Malcolm or Tariq a chance to trace the call. And for the record I did not follow you. Calum sent me your location. You still have a wire on. Inactive but releasing a signal."

"Ros."

"Who called you." She stated, rather than asked. Ros was in full Ice Queen mode. Her own emotions and fears shut down while she dealt with the situation at hand. "Lucas."

"I don't know." He answered honestly. Ros narrowed her eyes.

"Honestly, it can't be who I think it is. Its not possible. The man is dead. I. You should go. Its me he wants. You go. Stop thinking like a boss and think of the kids."

"Don't you dare." Ros snapped. "Our children are not a bargaining tool. Ever. Do you hear me?" Lucas sighed, he knew she wouldn't back down. Ros was never going to be taken for a fool. She was never going to let the one person who could exploit her feelings do so. Even if it was to get her to safety.

"I shouldn't have said that. I am sorry." Lucas answered honestly. "Ros."

The click of a gun stopped them in their tracks. Lucas felt sick, knowing the man he was looking at should be dead. Was dead. There was no way the man should be stood behind Ros holding a gun to her head.
