Chapter VII
By 11:30pm neither Sesshomaru nor Rin had an agreement on the documents spread out on her desk, frustrating not only Rin-who hadn't left Kazumi for over an hour since she was a baby-but Sesshomaru as well. What the documents had written on them could very well benefit both of their companies if handled correctly, but, if not, could endanger both their companies and run it to the ground. With a sigh of frustration, Rin massaged her temples to stop a headache from forming and re-read over the documents for the tenth time in over five minutes. She knew something was off in the wording, something it wanted to hide, she just couldn't figure out what that was.
Looking up at her company through her eyelashes, she couldn't help but want to wring his neck for his completely calm posture as he talked through his phone with someone of importance, while she was stressing over the documents and wishing she was home. When she re-read the same line for the fifth time in about a minute Rin gave up, leaned back in her chair, and openly stared at Sesshomaru. While waiting for Sesshomaru to finish, her thoughts drifted towards Kazumi wondering how Kagome was fairing with her extremely possessive, hyperactive daughter.
She had never left Kazumi for over an hour and if she did it was only half an hour longer, she is never too far from her. The separation anxiety she was experiencing at the moment had her almost to tears, although every parent go through this phase, hers was bordering on crazy. Like if she didn't see her daughter right this second and hold her in her arms she might freak out and bolt out of the building, just so she could see her. She had no idea how her father and mother dealt with it when they were alive. Hiding a yawn behind her hand, Rin looked at Sesshomaru through heavy lidded eyes and was about to tell him to call it a night, when she felt a slight tugging on her skirt.
Blinking slowly, Rin looked down and saw a red, teary eyed Kazumi. Thinking she was hallucinating at the thought of wanting to see Kazumi, she was about to go back to work at reading the documents, when she saw out of the corner of her eye a traumatized Kazumi about to throw a full on tantrum. Pushing away from the desk a little, Rin bent down at the waist and lifted Kazumi up into her arms, never once paying attention to the guest she had or the sudden quietness that engulfed her office as she comforted both herself and Kazumi down. Turning her chair around so that it was facing the window, Rin slowly rocked Kazumi side to side in one arm while the other was quickly unbuttoning her blouse. Once one of her breasts was free, she let Kazumi nurse on it and almost sighed in relief at the pressure released from it. She hadn't feed Kazumi in over three hours, and her breasts were so full that it was bordering on painful. She was just about to relax back in her chair and take comfort at having her daughter in her arms again, when her guest made himself known when he growled out,
"Onna, why is it that my scent is mixed with that child and yourself?"
Tensing, Rin turned her chair around a bit so that she could see him better but he couldn't see her or Kazumi, and was about to open her mouth to question what he meant, when one of her office doors opened. Turning her head to the side, she found Kagome standing inside the room with a sheepish, guilty expression.
"Rin I am so, so sorry to interrupt you, but Kazumi wouldn't calm down when she found out you left without saying anything, and when you didn't return right away..." trailing off, Kagome looked around Rin's office in both wonder and shock for a moment before noticing she had company. Bowing quickly at the waist, Kagome sheepishly apologized again for interrupting them before straightening, turned around and headed towards the couch in the far corner of the room, and proceeded to sit down.
With a sigh, Rin looked at Kagome for a moment before looking at Sesshomaru. With a mental shake of her head, Rin turned her chair around so that she was facing them, no longer caring about modesty as she picked up the office phone and dialed her secretary's number. While waiting for her to pick up, Rin looked at her company for a moment before turning her attention to her nursing, watching as her eyes slowly closed before her breathing evened out and her mouth let go of her nipple. One hand holding the cordless phone, Rin used her other one to caress her daughter's cheek before fixing both her bra and blouse. The connecting of the line shifted her attention to the phone and when she heard the soft voice of her secretary asking, "What can I do for you, Koizumi-san?" She quietly asked if she could order dinner for three and have it brought to the office. After reassuring her that she would be there within an hour, Rin hung up the phone on Aki and gave her full attention to the two occupying her office. With a deep breath to calm her nerves, Rin forced her face to calm and go expressionless before addressing Sesshomaru.
"Excuse the interruption Taisho-san, but would you mind explaining what you meant earlier by your. . . interesting statement?"
Sesshomaru, for a moment, looked like he wasn't about to answer before he very slightly tilted his head to the side and leveled Rin with a withering glare and saying, "I want to know why you and your pup have my scent and essence mixed into your scents ningen."
Rin's sharp inhale of breath was noted by both demon and girl in the room as her eyes widened slightly in shock before blinking once, twice as she carefully took in the person of the man, no youkai, in front of her, wondering why she hadn't noticed earlier or figured it out. With that thought in mind, the illusion before her eyes fell and she saw him for what he truly was. A demon from legends. His short brown hair shifted to a silvery-white, his dark brown eyes changed to gold, and his fair complexion was brought out by the markings on his face, a crescent moon on his forehead that can be seen beneath his bangs, two stripes on each cheek, and a magenta stripe on each eyelid. With these revelation she tightened her hold on Kazumi a bit more before uttering with a calm quiet voice,
"I have no idea what you are speaking about Taisho-san."
"Don't lie onna, your scent as well as the pup's have a segment of mine embedded within you. I want to know why, as I've never laid with you or sired a pup." Sesshomaru growled out as his eyes took a hue of red around the irises and his markings turned jagged. Swallowing the fear rising within her, Rin kept both her posture and expression calm as she addressed Sesshomaru with a calm that belied what she was feeling.
"I'm not lying, Taisho-san, I honestly have no idea what you're talking about."
Before Sesshomaru could say anything in regards to her statement, a knock on her office door resounded throughout the room. Kagome, who had been forgotten until that moment, jumped at the sound and rushed to open the door. Once the door was opened, Aki walked in a flourish with a large bag in one hand. She walked calmly and quickly through the tension filled room and stopped right in front of Rin's desk, laying the bag on top of the desk-careful not to lay it on top of the papers scattered there-she took out three large bento boxes from inside the bag, arranged them neatly on the desk, before bowing and leaving the room without a word.
Kagome, sensing the quickly growing tension between the two, intervened by taking one of the bentos and went back to her spot in the corner muttering under her breath about tension filled silence and feeling like a third wheel. Kazumi, who had been napping until that moment, stirred in her mother's arms and released a tongue curling yawn before looking up at Rin with sleep laden eyes and offering a small smile. For a moment all Rin could stare at was Kazumi before she was blinded by a white light, shocked, she closed her eyes as the light intensified by the second before it suddenly vanished. Confused, Rin cautiously opened her eyes only to see that she was no longer in her office but in a place with the only light in front of her and everywhere else an empty blackness. Sifting carefully in place, Rin took in her surroundings and noted that she wasn't by herself, acknowledging the presence besides her she quietly asked, "Where are we?" only to receive no answer.
With a crossing of her arms, Rin looked at her companion in exasperation before realizing a moment later that she wasn't holding Kazumi in her arms anymore. Panicking, she was about to leave her spot next to Sesshomaru when a voice she vaguely recognized echoed throughout the space.
"You cannot move from the spot you are in or you will forever be lost in this void that is my mind."
