Chapter X
After Sesshomaru left Rin decided on catching up on her sleep seeing as Kazumi looked like she wouldn't be waking up anytime soon; so with a relieved sigh, Rin drew the covers over her and Kazumi and promptly fell asleep. It wasn't until two hours later that she awoke with Kazumi's stirring and quiet mumbles in sleep, with a yawn and a rub on the eyes to get rid of the last remaining fragments of sleep, Rin pushed herself up to sit on the bed and stretch. With a long, weary sigh, Rin pushed the covers off of her and proceeded to walk to the bathroom. After doing her business and brushing her teeth, Rin walked out of the bathroom to find Kazumi still sleeping soundly on her bed, and not wanting to wake her, quietly made her way out of the room.
Once the coast was clear, Rin released a sigh of relief and quickly made her way to her office, sat behind her desk, and began working on the documents that needed her immediate attention. It wasn't until half an hour later that she was interrupted by the door to the study opening, looking up from the pile of papers she was looking at, Rin watched as a still sleepy Kazumi stumbled to the desk until she was in front of her.
Lifting her arms up into the air, Kazumi waited until her mother picked her up and fixed her so that her body was laying on her lap and her head on her chest, before closing her eyes and falling right back to sleep. Amused, Rin watched Kazumi sleep for a second, before going back to her paperwork. She lasted fifteen minutes this time without being interrupted before the phone rang and drew Rin away from her work; with a sigh and a roll of her eyes, Rin picked up the phone.
"Moshi moshi."
"Konbanwa, Koizumi-san," a gentle, soothing voice said. "I'm calling in behalf of Koizumi Kazumi's test results from Wednesday."
At hearing this, Rin straighten up in her chair and held the phone closer to her ear, anxiously waiting for the lady to say what she needed to say.
"We're calling to inform you that the results for Kazumi-san came back positive, meaning we need her back for further testing."
"Oh...of course," Rin says as she grabbed a pen and a blank piece of paper from a drawer. "When do we need to go back?"
"We have next week available, at nine o'clock. Is that alright ma'am?" At Rin's affirmative, the lady said her goodbyes and hung up. With a shaky inhale, Rin laid her head down on her desk and tried to calm her racing heart down. In another week she'll find out what was wrong with Kazumi, seeing as she had been too anxious to ask. With one last inhale, Rin stood back up and got up off of her chair. With Kazumi to her chest, Rin left her office and stepped into the living room where she placed Kazumi down in her portable crib, before making her way to the kitchen.
Walking straight to the fridge, Rin took out some eggs, bacon, and a carton of milk and placed them on top of the counter. Taking out a middle sized bowl from one of the cabinets, a pan and a whisk and spatula from a drawer, Rin placed them next to the eggs and milk before walking to the pantry and taking out a bag of bread. With her ingredients lined up in front of her, she began making a late breakfast. Half an hour later, Rin had a plate placed in front of her usual seat on the table and one in front of Kazumi's high chair. Breakfast consisted of French toast, some pieces of bacon, fruits, and orange juice.
Rin waited a full minute to see if Kazumi would join her and when she didn't hear any movement, began eating. Not even twenty seconds into her food, Rin spotted Kazumi toddling her way into the small dining room. Standing up, Rin made her way to Kazumi before picking her up and placing her in her high chair. Once Kazumi was comfortably situated in her chair, Rin sat down and began eating in earnest while keeping a watchful eye on Kazumi.
Halfway through her meal, Rin heard the sound of the elevator opening. Wondering who it was, seeing as not many knew the code to get into the penthouse, she stood up from her seat and looked towards the living room where she had a perfect view of who was entering the apartment. Observing as the elevator doors opened, Rin watched as Kagome step out of the elevator dressed in a pair of plain old leggings and a size too big tee shirt walk towards her with a smile on her face. With a frown of confusion on her face, Rin went to greet her long termed friend.
"Kagome," Rin began. "Not that I'm not happy to see you or anything, but what are you doing here?"
With a small laugh, Kagome closed the distance between her and Rin, pulled her up into a quick hug before walking into the kitchen where she cheerfully greeted Kazumi. With the frown still on her face, Rin walked into the kitchen where she saw Kagome happily chatting away with her daughter. Wanting her question answered, Rin rudely interrupted Kazumi's and Kagome's conversation by sternly calling out Kagome's name.
"Hmm?" Kagome replied not looking away from watching Kazumi happily munch away on her breakfast.
"What are you doing here?"
That seemed to catch her attention. Turning around in her seat, Kagome looked at Rin in confusion for a moment before slightly tilting her head to the side and saying, "You told me to come remember?"
Shaking her head in the negative, Rin waited for Kagome to enlighten her. Which she did, by simply saying, "You told me to watch Kazumi while you went to a meeting or something."
With a frown still on her face, Rin thought back to see when she had this conversation with Kagome and almost cursed out loud when she remembered. Seeing the time on the stove, Rin ran out the kitchen to her room in a panic, yelling over her shoulder at Kagome to watch Kazumi while she got ready. Within ten minutes Rin was dressed and had everything she needed ready.
Briskly walking to the kitchen, Rin quickly told Kagome that she should be done around two and to call if anything happens to Kazumi. With a kiss to the cheek, Rin told Kazumi she'll see her later before walking out the kitchen, to the living room, and into the elevator. With one last wave at Kazumi and Kagome who stood watching her from the kitchen doorway, Rin closed the doors and began descending down to the parking garage.
"Well," Kagome says to Kazumi. "Looks like it's just us now."
"Un!"
"How about you finish breakfast and then we can go visit Sango and go to the park, does that okay?"
With a cute little frown on her face, Kazumi thought it over before giving Kagome a brilliant smile, and nodding her head in agreement.
"Okay! Finish your breakfast and then we'll go, okay?"
"Hai!"
With that said Kazumi continued eating and Kagome kept watch of her.
