Chapter 9
Fitz POV
I was stuck. I couldn't move. My hands and feet were bound with a thick rope, and a force pushed against me. Like Ruys force field, but it didn't burn me.
"Finally." A voice said behind me. I knew that voice, Sophie. I tried to turn and she walked in front of me. Wearing all black. Tears filled my eyes, I had done this. It was my fault.
"You're damn right it is," Sophie said, growling a little.
"Sophie-I can explain-" I started, put Sophie's eyes narrowed, and I took in the gravity of this situation. If I didn't tread carefully I would end up dead, even if I was careful. I closed my eyes, and then opened them, taking a slow breath. I was prepared to die. By the person I loved. It was worth it, right?
"Alvar told me I would help find you faster," I began looking Sophie in the eyes, "He said I was helping dad out, and I was choosing the right side. They held a party, with everyone in the Neverseen. I didn't know who the people were, or where they came from, but Alvar paraded me around a giant room. I took an oath, saying I would stay true to my heart and to the right cause," I smiled my best at Sophie, "And I have."
I had been punched before, and once by Sophie, but never slapped. I guess she knew that because when her palm sent spikes of pain coursing through my cheek, I understood this game we were playing.
"Never say that," Sophie said taking my face in her hand, saying softly, "You, Fitory Avery Vacker have lived with me, and liked me, and even loved me." She spits the last words out like poison.
"I didn't know you!" I cried, "I didn't know who she was, she came willingly." I said as if to save myself from my increasingly closer fate.
"Then you have no moral compass," Sophie said disgusted, leaning away, "You know Fitz, I loved you. This could have worked. You could have told me." Sophie was crying now.
"I am sorry. I am so sorry." I said.
Sophie faced me, wiping her tears away. Smudging the black eyeliner she wore. Her face hardened, and, I suspected, her heart did as well.
"I wish that were enough, Fitz. I really do." Sophie said.
