"Its alright, its alright!" Ruby tried to calm down the panicked Weiss. "I don't mind that much, uh.. Do you want to meet back up and swap again?"
"No I can't, I have, ahhhggg..!" Weiss groaned in frustration. "At the earliest I can meet up again in, two days.. And DO NOT answer any calls unless its from your phone!" Weiss's frustration was almost oozing from the phone.
"Yes ma'm!" Ruby did a solute with her free hand. "I'll guard your phone until then then!"
"Thank you.. And again, I'm so sorry, I just–" there was some weird background noise. Like someone shouting? But it was to creaky. "I have to go." Weiss hung up.
Ruby took a look at the phone she was holding. It had a white cover. A hard cover. Ruby preferred the rubbery kind, she felt that it would protect her phone more if she dropped it. Like, it'd kinda bounce. Huh. The phone then decided to ring, Ruby almost dropping it in surprise. A call from 'Father'. ...Weiss's father was that rich Schnee guy... Ruby, was ignoring a call from one of the most important men in the world...
"Aren't you gonna answer that?" Yang called from the couch.
"No! No I can't, me and Weiss accidentally switched phones." The call ended. Ruby sat down next to Yang.
Yang turned down the TV volume, and looked to Ruby. "Soooo... Weiss, huh? She cute?"
"I'm not giving you her number." Ruby stuck her tongue out at Yang playfully.
"Hey, hey! I didn't ask for it did I? Besides, I'm with Blake right now." Yang scoffed dramatically.
"How are things with Blake? Was that your first date?" Ruby asked.
Yang shook her head. "Third, actually. Its been about a month. She's kinda hard to read sometimes though, so I'm always exited when she says she'll go again with me."
"You seem to really like her. And if I'm not mistaken, that was the first time you've had to be dragged back by one of your dates dead drunk, wasn't it?" Ruby gave a catlike smirk.
"Ah.. Hah, yeah." Yang rubbed the back of her head. "I think, I was trying to impress her? She can really hold a drink, I'll give her that."
"Awww! Yang's got a crush~" Ruby teased, Yang shoving her softly.
"Shut up! And we were talking about your girlfriend, weren't we?" Yang's lips curled into an evil grin.
Ruby felt a blush coming. "She's not my girlfriend.. We barely know each other. But, oh! I'm taking her trick or treating!" Ruby's mood rose like a rocket.
"Uh, hate to burst your bubble, but its July." Yang tilted her head. "Are you planing that far ahead?"
"I'll plan thirty years ahead if I have to! She's never been trick or treating! What a tragedy!" Ruby faked a feint.
"So, you threw a soda at a guy to save a girl, got fired, met up with that same girl a day later, went out 'somewhere' with her, and now you want to spend your birthday with her? Hmmmm~..." Yang raised her eyebrows up and down. "My romance senses are tingling~"
"Its not like that! besides, she's like, super rich or something.." Ruby mumbled the last part.
"So you're a gold digger now?" Yang snickered.
"I didn't even know until a few hours ago! I'm not sure, how to treat her anymore? Like.. I want to be friends, but, what if I'm not good enough f– oww!" In the middle of Ruby's sentence, Yang bonked her head.
"Don't punish yourself for something that hasn't even happened. Remember the house rule, if you use yourself as a mental punching bag, I get to use you as a physical one!" Yang pumped a fist in the air and patted Ruby's head lovingly. "Just try not treat her any different. Try to... Act like you were with her before? If you're going to treat her differently, let it be because you learned more about her personality, not her social standing. And plus, if she talked to you just fine, miss WcDonalds soda warrior, she probably isn't to hung up over her friends income." Yang rubbed Ruby's back gently. "Feel better?"
Ruby nodded, snuggling into her sisters side. "Yeah.. Thanks sis."
"No problem." Yang gave a smile and turned back to the TV.
"Hey Yang?" Ruby had one more question. "How would you take it?"
"Hm?"
"Like if someone you knew, uh.. Lets say Blake, if you found out something about her that was really important, and, obvious, but you were just to dense to notice?"
"Well, I'd like to think I'm very perceptive, so I'm pretty sure Blake isn't secretly a millionaire or fanus or an Alien or something. But if she were, I think I'd just be cool with it. She's the same person. I'd just know more about her. And I mean, I haven't asked her about any of those things, so its not like if she was, she was trying to hide it." Yang put her hand to her chin. "But that's just me, I'm a super chill person. Its probably different for you. It could take a while to get used to a bomb like that. Just don't make her feel to weird about it and it'll turn out fine, I'm sure."
"What if she were a vampire?" Ruby stared unblinking into Yang's eyes. She always did like adding completely unrelated things into heavy conversations to lighten the mood.
Yang was unable to answer for a moment, but came back like lightning. "Well, then I guess she'd get a free meal for a week each a month." She gave a wide grin.
Ruby thought for a moment, her eyes widening when she realized. "Oh god Yang, eww!" Ruby covered her face and kicked frantically at Yang.
Yang tried to speak through laughter. "Hey, you asked! And I'm sure vampire Weiss would do the same thing!"
"MMMM!" Ruby hummed while pressing her face into the couch, her legs struggling in Yang's iron grip. Ruby went limp and groaned. "Now I'm gonna see that in my dreams tonight..."
"What, Weiss?" Yang made a licking motion at the air.
"No!" Ruby tossed a pillow at yang. "You! Blehg!" Even Ruby was trying to hold in a laugh at that point. She and yang exchanged a few more lines of playful banter, before cuddling on the couch again at the movie playing.
The next day at around noon, Yang got a frantic call from their dad, that was basically something along the lines of 'I tried to call ruby but she didn't answer is she dead cause I'm freaking out'.
"No dad, Ruby's fine. She lost her phone. Well, not lost, but she cant get it back until tomorrow I think. Wanna talk to her?" Yang nodded at the phone, listening to their dad speak. She tossed her phone to Ruby.
Ruby caught it perfectly, and Yang gave her a thumbs up. Living with Yang, you had to be good at catching things that were randomly thrown at you, or you might accidentally get a pie or a shoe in the face without warning. Yang had trained Ruby's reflexes excellently.
"Hi dad! How're you doing?" Ruby chirped into the phone.
"Sigh.. A lot better, now that I know you're ok." their dad said.
"Did you need something? Or just wanted to talk?" Ruby found herself walking in a circle.
"Actually, I do need something. I'm going on a businesses trip again, and.. You're not here." He said.
"What does that have to do with– oh!" Ruby exclaimed. "Zwei!"
"What about Zwei? Is he ok?" Yang strode over with a worried look.
Ruby put her hand on the phone receiver for a moment and answered her sister. "Dads going away for a bit, so I think he's gonna ask if we can take Zwei in while he's gone."
"Oh pshhhh that's fine! I love Zwei! I wonder if blake'd like him.." Yang went over to the hallway, presumably to get things she had stored away special just for Zwei visits.
"I just told yang, and she seemed to love the idea of a Zwei visit. Can you bring him over? Or should I go get him?" Ruby asked.
"Well, that's the thing. I've already left. I'm about to board a plane, actually. Zwei is home alone and needs love! Do you remember where the spare key is?" Their dad asked.
"Yep! I also have my own set, remember." Ruby nodded, even though the phone couldn't see that.
"That's great! Thanks sweetie! Sorry but, need to go now! The plane's boarding, but I'll call again as soon as I land, ok? Talk to you then! Yang too!" He hung up.
Ruby tossed the phone back to Yang, and like the show off she was, Yang caught it perfectly with out even looking. How the fu–
"You want a ride on bumblebee? I don't mind." Yang lifted her chin for a second at Ruby, offering her a ride on her motorbike, which she had names bumblbee.
"Thanks, but nah. I'd like to walk." Ruby waved a hand dismissively.
"You sure? It'll take all day to go there and back." Yang offered her motorbike suggestion again.
Ruby shook her head. "Its ok, I just want quality time between me and Zwei. Just imagining the little guy made Ruby smile.
Yang nodded. "Understandable. Then I call sleeping with him the first night!"
Ruby was about to protest, but shrugged. "Eh, that's fair. Bye sis~" Ruby went off on her journey, to collect the sacred corgi, and return him to their stronghold. Or at least, that's how she interpreted it.
Walking to the house was nice. Ruby had only moved in with Yang a few months ago, and before that Yang had only been gone from the family house for about a year or so. So seeing the familiar, streets, in the small quiet area of the town, was sooo calming. Ruby had actually forgotten her keys, so she was glad that her dad had reminded her that there was a spare. She knocked on the door.
the sound of claws clicking on wood sounded as Zwei ran to the door to greet whoever was there. "Zewiiii! Hey boy!" Ruby said, unlocking the door. Zwei barked happily, jumping into Ruby's arms as soon as the door was opened. Ruby looked into the house, feeling a slight bought of melancholy. The house seemed so empty like this. She remembered her mom, baking cookies and walking into the front room with the tray still hot, Ruby and Yang jumping at her feet for a bite. She remembered her uncle crow tossing her in the air as her dad gave Yang a piggy back ride around the room. She remembered when Zwei was just a puppy, stubby little legs baraly able to keep up with his hyperactive attitude. Those peaceful times, were gone forever.
Ruby closed the door.
Zwei was exited to go for a walk, and gladly let Ruby put the leash on him. she let him lead the way, as long as he went in the general direction of Yang's apartment. It wasn't long before the familiar roads to the family house were gone, turned back into the city streets and tall buildings around where Yang lived. Or, Ruby should say, where they both lived.
Zwei was great around people, so he didn't bark threateningly at anyone. And people he did growl at, Ruby made sure to keep clear of. It was nice to have a dog with such a good sense of justice.
Ruby passed the cafe Weiss had treated her at. She looked away, not even wanting to know whatever the prices would've been. when she was about five minuets away from home, Ruby got a strange feeling. Like someone was watching her? Zwei didn't seem to worried through...
Ruby thought she saw snow white hair out of the corner of her eye. What? Its not like Weiss could've been anywhere near here–
And there she was. Weiss. In the flesh. Ruby had to blink a few times to make sure it wasn't a hallucination. "Weiss?" She tilted her head. Zwei trotted forward, trying to ask Weiss for head pats. She immediately lost the serious air about her, and crouched down to see him.
"Ohhhhmy gosh what a cute little guy yes you are yes you are awww who wants a belly rub hmmmm who wants one such a cutieee~!" She gurgled with adoring affection for the black and white corgi. Zwei was loving it.
Weiss looked strange. She was wearing a huge dark brown trench coat. Why would someone that was so fashionable wear that? Her hair had dark smudges in it, clearly visible against the white. Ruby almost forgot how to speak for a moment, but recovered a little and made an attempt
"Ah, um, Weiss! Im, so sorry, I didn't bring your phone with me! My place isn't to far, if you want to come with me real quick to swap phones again–" Ruby started, but Weiss stood and interrupted her.
"I know this sounds.. bad, but could you hide me for about a week? Please?" Weiss looked desperate
"...what?"
